:26:21. > :26:24.A reading from the hold Gospel according to Luke.

:26:24. > :26:34.Glory to you, O Lord.

:26:34. > :26:40.

:26:40. > :26:42.Caesar Augustus issued a decree

:26:42. > :26:46.for a census of the whole world to be taken.

:26:46. > :26:48.This census - the first - took place

:26:48. > :26:52.while Quirinius was governor of Syria,

:26:52. > :26:55.and everyone went to his own town to be registered.

:26:55. > :26:59.So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee

:26:59. > :27:04.and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem,

:27:04. > :27:08.since he was of David's House and line,

:27:08. > :27:11.in order to be registered together with Mary,

:27:11. > :27:15.his betrothed, who was with child.

:27:15. > :27:19.While they were there, the time came for her have her child,

:27:19. > :27:23.and she birth to a son, her first born.

:27:23. > :27:28.She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger,

:27:28. > :27:33.because there was no room for them at the inn.

:27:33. > :27:35.In the countryside close by,

:27:35. > :27:37.there were shepherds who lived in the fields

:27:37. > :27:43.and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night.

:27:43. > :27:46.The angel of the Lord appeared to them,

:27:46. > :27:50.and the glory of the Lord shone round them.

:27:50. > :27:55.They were terrified, but the angel said, "Do not be afraid.

:27:56. > :28:00."Listen, I bring you news of great joy,

:28:00. > :28:04."a joy to be shared by the whole people.

:28:04. > :28:06."Today in the town of David,

:28:06. > :28:12."a saviour has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord.

:28:12. > :28:14."And here is a sign for you -

:28:14. > :28:21."you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."

:28:21. > :28:23.And suddenly with the angel,

:28:23. > :28:27.there was a great throng of the heavenly host,

:28:27. > :28:33.praising God and singing, "Glory to God in the highest heaven,

:28:33. > :28:41."and peace to men who enjoy his favour."

:28:41. > :28:44.The Gospel of the Lord.

:28:44. > :28:49.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

:28:49. > :28:59.ORGAN FANFARE

:28:59. > :29:26.

:29:26. > :29:30.Most Christian Churches around the world

:29:30. > :29:31.will put up a crib for the Christmas season.

:29:32. > :29:36.We're all familiar with theatbeautiful tableau of Joseph and Mary,

:29:36. > :29:40.shepherds and wise men, ox and ass gathered to adore

:29:41. > :29:45.the newly born infant in the manger.

:29:45. > :29:46.The scene is usually topped

:29:46. > :29:52.with a star, and beautiful, crisp, golden straw

:29:52. > :29:55.completes the stable setting.

:29:55. > :30:02.It's the very image of tranquillity, serenity and peace.

:30:02. > :30:06.When I was parish priest in nearby Mirfield,

:30:06. > :30:11.the straw was provided by a family who kept a pony.

:30:11. > :30:15.One year, when I arrived after dark to collect the straw,

:30:15. > :30:19.one of the teenage children was despatched to the stable

:30:20. > :30:24.with a couple of bin bags and a shovel.

:30:24. > :30:31.It wasn't until the straw was tipped out in church that I discovered

:30:31. > :30:35.it must have been collected from under the pony itself

:30:35. > :30:39.rather than from fresh stock.

:30:39. > :30:46.It was dirty, soiled and stank, littered with pony droppings

:30:46. > :30:48.and, of course, it had to be replaced.

:30:48. > :30:53.However, I suspect it more authentically depicted

:30:53. > :30:58.the stable in Bethlehem than any of the pious figurines.

:30:58. > :31:04.We have sanitised the Christmas and romanticised it.

:31:04. > :31:09.But there is nothing romantic and serene about it whatsoever.

:31:09. > :31:15.The truth is that the Christmas story is set amidst poverty,

:31:15. > :31:21.upheaval, political oppression and brutality.

:31:21. > :31:27.The Roman economy was in a mess, and the Romans wanted more taxes.

:31:27. > :31:31.And so, just as we heard in tonight's Gospel, everybody -

:31:31. > :31:35.young and old and even the pregnant -

:31:35. > :31:40.had to be rounded up to pay their dues.

:31:40. > :31:42.Bethlehem was overcrowded

:31:42. > :31:49.and the only place Mary and Joseph could find for a child to be born

:31:49. > :31:53.was in the squalor of a stable.

:31:53. > :31:58.Then, all at once, the baby's life was put in danger.

:31:58. > :32:01.The wise men from the East had innocently told King Herod

:32:01. > :32:05.that a great new King of the Jews had been born.

:32:05. > :32:10.Herod was determined to eradicate this infant rival

:32:10. > :32:17.and gave orders to massacre any male children under two years old.

:32:17. > :32:25.The holy family had to flee to Egypt to seek asylum.

:32:25. > :32:32.Nothing romantic, tranquil, serene or peaceful about it.

:32:32. > :32:37.But it is in this story of political oppression

:32:37. > :32:44.and hardship that the Word of God became flesh and dwelt amongst us.

:32:44. > :32:47.God comes to his chosen people

:32:47. > :32:57.in the very midst of their suffering, oppression and pain.

:32:57. > :33:16.

:33:16. > :33:17.As

:33:17. > :33:17.As Isaiah

:33:17. > :33:23.As Isaiah said

:33:23. > :33:33.As Isaiah said in our first reading, people that walked in darkness have

:33:33. > :33:36.

:33:36. > :33:38.For most of us, take on greater significance

:33:38. > :33:40.We are more acutely aware of the circumstances of our lives.

:33:40. > :33:42.First of all,

:33:42. > :33:46.the circumstances of our family arrangements come into sharp focus.

:33:46. > :33:52.Some will cherish the hours or daysof family togetherness at Christmas,

:33:52. > :34:02.while others may may find that experience

:34:02. > :34:03.tiresome and tedious in the extreme.

:34:03. > :34:06.And, of course, there will also be many people

:34:06. > :34:10.who feel particularly alone and unloved at Christmas.

:34:10. > :34:15.In many homes, families struggling in the present economic environment

:34:15. > :34:17.may be worried silly

:34:17. > :34:25.where the money to pay for Christmas is to be found.

:34:25. > :34:30.Elsewhere, some may be grieving the recent loss of a loved one,

:34:30. > :34:35.perhaps killed tragically, ormurdered, or died by their own hand.

:34:35. > :34:40.Families in Newtown, Connecticut, and victims of similar atrocities,

:34:40. > :34:46.will feel acute pain and loss at this time.

:34:46. > :34:49.There will be those in temporary accommodation

:34:49. > :34:52.as a result of flood damage,

:34:52. > :35:01.those who are homeless, or strangersseeking acceptance in a foreign land.

:35:01. > :35:07.Whatever the circumstances of our lives as we keep this Christmas,

:35:07. > :35:12.the first lesson we should draw from the story of the Nativity

:35:12. > :35:17.is that a saviour has been born for us,

:35:17. > :35:21.God truly is with us.

:35:22. > :35:24.Jesus was made flesh

:35:24. > :35:28.and dwelt amidst the oppression and brutality of his own day,

:35:29. > :35:35.and in the poverty and vulnerabilityin which so many of the people lived.

:35:35. > :35:40.And Jesus' followers must make him present for the poor,

:35:40. > :35:46.the marginalised, and the oppressed of our own modern world.

:35:46. > :35:52.The second lesson we should draw from the story of the Nativity

:35:52. > :35:55.is that Christians should be the light
