0:00:07 > 0:00:10If there's one venue in Northern Ireland that holds a special place
0:00:10 > 0:00:12in the heart of music lovers,
0:00:12 > 0:00:14it's got to be Belfast's Ulster Hall.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18It's hosted countless legendary shows down the decades and tonight,
0:00:18 > 0:00:20we celebrate its 150th anniversary.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23To mark the occasion, we're going to throw a party -
0:00:23 > 0:00:25something a little bit different,
0:00:25 > 0:00:26as we celebrate not just the hall,
0:00:26 > 0:00:30but the incredible back catalogue of songs written by Northern Irish artistes.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34We selected 32 classics and asked for you to vote for your top ten.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38Tonight, those songs will be performed by contemporary Northern Irish acts
0:00:38 > 0:00:40in their own fashion...
0:00:40 > 0:00:42accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44It's going to be special so, folks,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46welcome to The Great Northern Songbook.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19Ladies and gentlemen, a potted history of the Ulster Hall.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Doors opened in 1862, around 7.00pm.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Originally a ballroom, it quickly took on a life of its own.
0:01:26 > 0:01:31Who'll forget Charles Dickens' farewell/comeback/greatest hits tour in 1869,
0:01:31 > 0:01:34laying the path for great icons to visit over the next century or so?
0:01:34 > 0:01:36But it hasn't always been easy.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40It's played an important part in the political history of Northern Ireland, too...
0:01:40 > 0:01:43from the signing of the Ulster Covenant in 1912,
0:01:43 > 0:01:46to the formation of the Ulster Resistance.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49It's continued to be the home of political rallies and debates.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51And it's also opened its doors to sporting fans,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55from the 1940s, when Belfast boxing hero "Rinty" Monaghan
0:01:55 > 0:01:56stepped into the ring,
0:01:56 > 0:01:59to early appearances by world champ, Barry McGuigan.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy got down and dirty under its roof,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04and people were queueing up to see the likes of Alex Higgins
0:02:04 > 0:02:06and Dennis Taylor.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09And it's hosted beer festivals, tattoo conventions,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12food fairs and everything in between.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15But most of us hold the Ulster Hall in our hearts for one reason only,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17and that's its amazing musical heritage.
0:02:17 > 0:02:22There's no possible way to mention every single band who have graced this stage.
0:02:22 > 0:02:23But there have been highlights.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27The Rolling Stones turned many young ladies to blubbering wrecks in '65.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30Led Zeppelin made musical history, with the world premiere
0:02:30 > 0:02:32of Stairway To Heaven in 1971.
0:02:32 > 0:02:38A Melody Maker review of the gig described the song as an "excellent ballad". If only they knew...
0:02:38 > 0:02:41The Clash tried to play around this time, but the city fathers said no.
0:02:41 > 0:02:45It was a second home for Rory Gallagher. The Boomtown Rats
0:02:45 > 0:02:48and Motorhead both took to the stage in the late '70s.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51'Toyah, The Ramones, The Undertones, Coldplay...'
0:02:51 > 0:02:53The Chemical Brothers, Snow Patrol,
0:02:53 > 0:02:55the Chilli Peppers...
0:02:55 > 0:02:56I could go on and on.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59And when it comes to big names, tonight is no exception.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Once again, all these acts doing their own take on tracks chosen

0:06:56 > 0:06:59CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Cara Dillon, welcome to the show. - It's great to be here.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05So many people rave about the Ulster Hall and for different reasons,
0:07:05 > 0:07:07but, for you, what makes it special?
0:07:07 > 0:07:09As a singer, for me, personally,
0:07:09 > 0:07:11it is just the acoustics.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14Sometimes I joke and call myself "the reverb queen",
0:07:14 > 0:07:18because our soundman can't give me enough reverb, sometimes.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21But in here, if you didn't have a monitor with reverb in it,
0:07:21 > 0:07:24it wouldn't matter. It's so beautiful, your voice just carries.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28I think it's probably one of those places that has seen
0:07:28 > 0:07:32so much good music over so many years that the walls have absorbed
0:07:32 > 0:07:36that sound and it's given it back to everyone who plays here.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39When you first heard you'd be doing Teenage Kicks,
0:07:39 > 0:07:42what was your reaction? Did that feel it would be a big challenge?
0:07:42 > 0:07:45No...it was a lottery, really.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48I was holding my breath, waiting to see what it was going to be.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51It's so funny to get this song.
0:07:51 > 0:07:53For me, it seemed kind of ridiculous.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57It's such a challenge and I wanted to do it, cos it's an AMAZING song.
0:07:57 > 0:07:58And it's a song which
0:07:58 > 0:08:04I remember growing up and listening to in the car constantly
0:08:04 > 0:08:06and because they're from Derry,
0:08:06 > 0:08:09I was just delighted to get this song.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11I didn't know what way I was going to do it.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15I just love the arrangement, the way it's all been slowed down.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19It shows that a good song can be interpreted...
0:08:19 > 0:08:22and can survive the test of time. It's great.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26Our next band are arguably the best live act in the country today.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30Good enough to share stages with the likes of AC/DC, the Stones and Aerosmith.
0:08:30 > 0:08:32from County Down, it's The Answer,
0:08:32 > 0:08:35performing the song that topped our poll by a long shot...
0:08:35 > 0:08:40and won its author an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, back in 2001.
0:08:40 > 0:08:42It's Shining Light, by Ash.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48# Roman candle that burns in the night
0:08:48 > 0:08:51# Yeah, you are a shining light
0:08:51 > 0:08:54# You lit a torch
0:08:54 > 0:08:56# In the infinite
0:08:56 > 0:08:59# Yeah, you are a shining light
0:09:01 > 0:09:04# You light up my life
0:09:05 > 0:09:08# You've always been a thorn in the side
0:09:08 > 0:09:13# But to me, you're a shining light
0:09:14 > 0:09:18# You arrive and the night is alive
0:09:18 > 0:09:21# Yeah, you are a shining light
0:09:23 > 0:09:26# You light up my life
0:09:27 > 0:09:31# We made our connection
0:09:31 > 0:09:36# A full-on chemical reaction
0:09:36 > 0:09:39# Brought by dark divine intervention
0:09:39 > 0:09:41# Yeah, I see
0:09:41 > 0:09:45# You are a shining light
0:09:45 > 0:09:49# A constellation, once seen
0:09:49 > 0:09:53# Over Royal David's City
0:09:53 > 0:09:58# An epiphany You burn so pretty, yeah
0:09:58 > 0:10:03# I see you are a shining light
0:10:03 > 0:10:07# You are a force You're a constant source
0:10:07 > 0:10:11# Yeah, you are a shining light
0:10:12 > 0:10:16# Incandescent in the darkest night
0:10:16 > 0:10:20# Yeah, you are a shining light
0:10:21 > 0:10:25# You light up my life
0:10:26 > 0:10:29# We made our connection
0:10:29 > 0:10:34# A full-on chemical reaction
0:10:34 > 0:10:38# Brought by dark divine intervention
0:10:38 > 0:10:42# I see you are a shining light
0:10:42 > 0:10:47# A constellation once seen
0:10:47 > 0:10:52# Over Royal David's City
0:10:52 > 0:10:56# An epiphany You burn so pretty, yeah
0:10:56 > 0:11:00# I see you are a shining light
0:11:02 > 0:11:05# These are the days you often say
0:11:05 > 0:11:09# There ain't nothing that we can do
0:11:10 > 0:11:13# Beneath this canopy
0:11:13 > 0:11:15# Of stars
0:11:15 > 0:11:18# I'd shed blood for you
0:11:18 > 0:11:20# And you and you... #
0:11:20 > 0:11:22ORCHESTRA PLAYS
0:11:42 > 0:11:46# We made our connection
0:11:46 > 0:11:50# A full-on chemical reaction
0:11:50 > 0:11:54# Brought by dark divine intervention
0:11:54 > 0:11:58# I see you are a shining light
0:12:00 > 0:12:03# A constellation once seen
0:12:05 > 0:12:08# Over Royal David's City
0:12:08 > 0:12:12# An epiphany You burn so pretty, yeah

0:12:17 > 0:12:21# Yeah, you light up my life
0:12:21 > 0:12:24# I see you are a shining light

0:12:36 > 0:12:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:12:41 > 0:12:43Thank you so much!
0:12:44 > 0:12:47Our next performer barely needs an introduction.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51Put simply, he's one of our most evocative voices - Brian Kennedy.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54Brian has performed many times with the author of our next classic,
0:12:54 > 0:12:56musical juggernaut, Van Morrison.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00Taken from the record that Van will probably be best remembered for, Astral Weeks,
0:13:00 > 0:13:03released when he was 23,
0:13:03 > 0:13:06this tells the tale of the ever-mysterious Madame George.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12# Down on Cyprus Avenue
0:13:12 > 0:13:19# The childlike vision leaping into view
0:13:23 > 0:13:28# The clicking-clacking of the high-heeled shoe
0:13:28 > 0:13:33# Ford and Fitzroy and Madame George
0:13:37 > 0:13:40# Marching with the soldier boy behind
0:13:42 > 0:13:47# He's much older now with hat on, drinking wine
0:13:49 > 0:13:53# And that smell of sweet perfume
0:13:53 > 0:13:55# Comes drifting through
0:13:56 > 0:14:00# The cool night air like Shalimar
0:14:04 > 0:14:08# Outside, they're making all the stops
0:14:10 > 0:14:15# The kids out on the street collecting bottle tops
0:14:17 > 0:14:22# Going for cigarettes and matches in the shops
0:14:24 > 0:14:27# Happy taken Madame George
0:14:31 > 0:14:35# That's when you fall
0:14:37 > 0:14:40# Whoa-oh-oh-oh, that's when you fall
0:14:43 > 0:14:45# Yeah
0:14:45 > 0:14:49# That's when you fall
0:14:53 > 0:14:56# When you fall into a trance
0:14:58 > 0:15:03# Sitting on a sofa Playing games of chance
0:15:06 > 0:15:10# With your folded arms and history books you glance
0:15:12 > 0:15:17# Into the eyes of Madame George
0:15:20 > 0:15:23# And you think you've found the bag
0:15:26 > 0:15:29# You're getting weaker
0:15:29 > 0:15:31# Your knees begin to sag
0:15:33 > 0:15:34# In the corner
0:15:34 > 0:15:37# Playing dominoes in drag
0:15:39 > 0:15:44# The only and only Madame George
0:15:48 > 0:15:53# And then, from outside The frosty window raps
0:15:53 > 0:15:58# She jumps up and says, "Lord have mercy, I think it's the cops!"
0:16:02 > 0:16:05# And immediately drops everything she got
0:16:07 > 0:16:10# Down into the street below
0:16:15 > 0:16:18# And you know you got to go
0:16:21 > 0:16:25# On the train from Dublin up to Sandy Row
0:16:27 > 0:16:31# Throwing pennies at the bridges down below
0:16:35 > 0:16:38# And the rain, hail, sleet and snow
0:16:41 > 0:16:46# Say goodbye to Madame George
0:16:49 > 0:16:53# Dry your eye for Madame George
0:16:56 > 0:17:00# Wonder why for Madame George
0:17:05 > 0:17:08# And as you leave, the room
0:17:08 > 0:17:10# Is filled with music
0:17:10 > 0:17:13# Laughing, music, laughing, music
0:17:17 > 0:17:20# And all around the room
0:17:20 > 0:17:22# And all the little boys come around
0:17:22 > 0:17:27# Walking away from it all, so cold
0:17:31 > 0:17:34# And as you're about to leave She jumps up and says...
0:17:38 > 0:17:40# "Hey, love, you forgot your gloves"
0:17:47 > 0:17:49# And the gloves to love The gloves to love
0:17:49 > 0:17:52# The gloves to love, the gloves to love, the gloves to love,
0:17:52 > 0:17:54# The gloves to love The gloves to love
0:17:57 > 0:18:02# Say goodbye to Madame George
0:18:04 > 0:18:11# In the backstreets, in the backstreets, in the backstreets. #
0:18:11 > 0:18:14APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:18:17 > 0:18:20Van Morrison, what a song!
0:18:20 > 0:18:22I was very fortunate to get to know Van Morrison...
0:18:22 > 0:18:24in the very early '90s
0:18:24 > 0:18:27and of course, we were always aware of him as an artist.
0:18:27 > 0:18:30But I started working with him in around the early '90s,
0:18:30 > 0:18:33and I went on tour with him for six years, around the world,
0:18:33 > 0:18:34and sang on five of his albums,
0:18:34 > 0:18:36but we did, occasionally - very occasionally,
0:18:36 > 0:18:39put in Madame George in the live set.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42I'm privileged to say the first time I attempted to look at that song,
0:18:42 > 0:18:44I did it with Van,
0:18:44 > 0:18:47and I sometimes played guitar on it, but mostly I would sing it with him.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50So it's one of those songs that's just...in terms of the fabric
0:18:50 > 0:18:54of Belfast, it's such an integral part
0:18:54 > 0:18:55of the soundtrack of this city,
0:18:55 > 0:18:58so I'm proud to be part of it and to give it voice tonight.
0:18:58 > 0:19:01Over the years, as a punter, what have been your stand-out moments
0:19:01 > 0:19:02in the Ulster Hall?
0:19:02 > 0:19:06It's one of those places that, first of all, I used to sing outside the City Hall
0:19:06 > 0:19:08as a little busker.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10It was one of those places you knew had this incredible,
0:19:10 > 0:19:12legendary reputation.
0:19:12 > 0:19:16You know, Rory Gallagher - all these people that came here, played here,
0:19:16 > 0:19:17rocked the house.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21It was always a, kind of, quite aspiration of mine
0:19:21 > 0:19:24to come and sing in the Ulster Hall,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26so to get to do it in this way,
0:19:26 > 0:19:30and to celebrate all these Northern songs is an incredible privilege.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33People rave about the Ulster Hall, for different reasons.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35For you, what makes it so special?
0:19:35 > 0:19:38I think it has to come down to its history, I think.
0:19:38 > 0:19:39It's an iconic building.
0:19:39 > 0:19:43In terms of the progression of our city,
0:19:43 > 0:19:45from the darkest of times,
0:19:45 > 0:19:47right through to these brighter times,
0:19:47 > 0:19:50the Ulster Hall has just stood there, remaining a really,
0:19:50 > 0:19:52I suppose, a kind of a building of hope where, at least,
0:19:52 > 0:19:56you don't have to be Protestant or Catholic, or any of that kind of stuff.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58When you come to the Ulster Hall, you're there to see music.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00You put any kind of politic aside.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02I think it's one of the only buildings
0:20:02 > 0:20:04that offered that, in the quiet way that it did,
0:20:04 > 0:20:07and it has great dignity as a building, too.
0:20:07 > 0:20:09So I think that, for me as a performer,
0:20:09 > 0:20:11it's one of those places, that when I look back on my career,
0:20:11 > 0:20:14I think, "Yeah, I sang in the Ulster Hall."
0:20:14 > 0:20:17Next up is General Fiasco, a band
0:20:17 > 0:20:20with an army of fans, following their excellent debut, Buildings.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22They're back with a new record,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25but tonight they're performing a song by, in my opinion,

0:23:57 > 0:24:00squeezed together and playing loud rock music,
0:24:00 > 0:24:02and to have all those extra bodies,

0:38:46 > 0:38:49Everybody in this land can relate to those lyrics,
0:38:49 > 0:38:54but at the same time, he goes away from that really heavy subject,
0:38:54 > 0:38:56and brings in the love element to it.
0:38:56 > 0:39:00It's genius songwriting and it's a song that, without a doubt,

0:39:11 > 0:39:13and I just hope I do the song justice.
0:39:13 > 0:39:16Say you were telling the rest of the guys in INXS to play Belfast

0:39:21 > 0:39:24where you were like, "I'm going to be there some day."
0:39:24 > 0:39:27It IS that definitive venue.
0:39:27 > 0:39:30A lot of bands... We all know the history of the place,
