0:05:01 > 0:05:02CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Thank you.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Thank you very much.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13Thank you. Welcome to my show.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Thank you very much, thank you.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23I'm not a very good presenter, so I've got someone in to help me.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Erm, please welcome Graham Norton.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32Hello. Hi. Mwah! Mwah! Sit down, sit down.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Thank you very much. Yes, Adele is back.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41What an incredible start to the show. Beautiful.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Very, very good. Welcome, one and all, to Adele At The BBC.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Now, tonight is going to be very special indeed.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Obviously I'm going to be chatting with Adele about what she's been

0:05:49 > 0:05:51up to for the last three years.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53We've a bit of fun lined up, but, tonight,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55is really all about the music.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57We've got classics from the amazing 19.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59CHEERING

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Tracks from the brilliant 21.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04CHEERING

0:06:04 > 0:06:09And we have exclusive brand-new material from 25, yeah.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11OK.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- I've got cards.- I know. - Are you ready for this?

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- My name on them.- Yes. - How amazing.- Are you ready?

0:06:18 > 0:06:21- OK, I'm ready.- OK, so listen, how long has it been?

0:06:21 > 0:06:24It's been, yeah, like, three years since I did, erm, Skyfall...

0:06:24 > 0:06:26- OK.- ..at the Oscars.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31So... But 19, 21, 25... You're not 25, so how does that work?

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Because I name the albums after how old I am when I start writing them,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37so when 19 came out, I was actually 20,

0:06:37 > 0:06:41when 21 came out, I was nearly 23, and now I'm 27.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44And were you always going to call it, like, your age?

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Yeah, cos that was my first breakthrough moment -

0:06:47 > 0:06:49I wrote a song on the album called Remedy, and I was 25

0:06:49 > 0:06:53- and like, "OK, wheels are in motion, this album's 25."- Boom!

0:06:53 > 0:06:56OK, let's talk about 21, because 21, you know, that...

0:06:56 > 0:06:58- The difficult second album.- Yeah.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02You really aced that. I mean, that was nuts.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04- It was mad.- Over 30 million. - Hmm.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07Best-selling record, two years in a row.

0:07:07 > 0:07:08- It's phenomenal.- Yeah.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Was there a moment when you kind of knew,

0:07:12 > 0:07:14"Oh, this isn't just an album, this is a thing"?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Yeah, I just remember people making it happen, really,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19more than anything I was doing, because I kept having to stop

0:07:19 > 0:07:22what I was doing, because I kept having lots of vocal problems.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24So I'd go into hiding, not into actual hiding,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27but I'd have to go into, like, rest, you know, and not talk.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29So that is kind of hiding and, erm, everyone just kept recommending

0:07:29 > 0:07:32the album and like losing it or I don't know, giving it away.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35I don't know how many people can buy it, it's so ridiculous.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37It must be, like, a logical reason for it.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Erm, but I remember the Mercury Awards when 21 was nominated

0:07:40 > 0:07:42and I remember it being a bit of a scramble

0:07:42 > 0:07:44just to come towards me.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47I was just a bit like, whoa, like, you know, chillax, like me,

0:07:47 > 0:07:50like, fine. That was the turning point for me,

0:07:50 > 0:07:52where I felt a little bit like the album was getting

0:07:52 > 0:07:54a lot bigger than I certainly was.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57And that's when I, sort of, you know...

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Yeah, cos what I like is, this is just a good reminder for everyone,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03that sometimes excellence isn't enough.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04In terms of breaking America...

0:08:04 > 0:08:08- Yeah.- ..there was a bit of... well, a big bit of luck.- Huge.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10The Saturday Night Live, the Saturday Night Live thing.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12- Huge luck, yeah, I got SNL, erm... - SNL.- The week...

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Oh, I know. I've only done it once. I think I'm doing it again, though.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Erm, the week I was doing it was meant to be a normal week,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22but the week, erm, after, I think, Sarah Palin was supposed to

0:08:22 > 0:08:24do it and because something came up in the campaign, she came

0:08:24 > 0:08:27and did the week I was doing it with Josh Brolin.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29So it was like one of the most-watched SNL's ever

0:08:29 > 0:08:31and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34which is like when people, like, decide what songs they want

0:08:34 > 0:08:37to maybe nominate. So it was, like, literally...

0:08:37 > 0:08:38It was like the stars aligned for me

0:08:38 > 0:08:41and then I was, yeah, the album shot to number one on iTunes

0:08:41 > 0:08:44and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46I mean, it was a joke. It was a joke.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48- All thanks to Sarah Palin.- Yeah.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52SHE CACKLES

0:08:52 > 0:08:56- She's good for something! - She was nice.- Was she nice?

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Yeah. I'm not really one to talk about politics no more,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- but, yeah, she was nice. She was fine.- Of course...

0:09:02 > 0:09:06So, you win all the prizes, and we'll talk about some of them later,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09but I haven't heard you talk about... I think we forget

0:09:09 > 0:09:13- you are Adele MBE. - Yeah. I couldn't turn that down,

0:09:13 > 0:09:15my nan would have been livid.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17- So, yeah.- Did you take your nan with you?- I did, yeah.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- Oh!- She loved it.- Who did you get on the day?- Prince Charles.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23At first, I was a little disappointed it wasn't the Queen,

0:09:23 > 0:09:27but then I realised that Prince Charles will be King

0:09:27 > 0:09:30for my kid, so I thought that'd be cool.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33When he's learning about history and about his King,

0:09:33 > 0:09:34I'll bring out me MBE!

0:09:34 > 0:09:38- And also, keep in with them. Dame hood, you know?- Yeah.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40No, no, no, no. MBE's fine for me, thanks.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Er, OK, so here's the thing.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46- So, 21, huge thing, you had to follow it.- Yeah.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Something had to happen next and, wow, Hello,

0:09:50 > 0:09:54you can't have... Like, it must have exceeded your expectations.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- Ridiculous. Like, what Hello went on to do?- Well, yeah.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59- What is happening? - What is happening right now.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01It's insane. I wasn't... I was hoping it...

0:10:01 > 0:10:04I was hoping people would like it and I kind of knew that my, like,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06my hardcore fans...

0:10:06 > 0:10:10I knew they'd be into it and then, erm, the general reaction to it

0:10:10 > 0:10:13blew my mind, like, it really has, like.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- You broke the internet, Adele. - I know, but do you know what?

0:10:15 > 0:10:17I done an interview, like, the week before.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19I don't think it's out yet and I was like,

0:10:19 > 0:10:21"Oh, I don't really know how important the internet is

0:10:21 > 0:10:23"for this campaign."

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Cos last time I released an album, there was no Twitter, no Instagram,

0:10:26 > 0:10:29that's how drastic it was, it was years ago that I released an album.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31And I was just... After that advert that I did,

0:10:31 > 0:10:33you know, that went viral, I didn't...

0:10:33 > 0:10:36I really under-estimated the power of the internet

0:10:36 > 0:10:38and it's really blown my mind.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Now I'm on it here and there -

0:10:40 > 0:10:43doing my own thing, not googling myself or nothing like that -

0:10:43 > 0:10:45but interact... Not interact.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48I haven't got anyone to interact with. Hang on...

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Just having a look at the top trends, and it's fascinating.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54That's how you find out about stuff. It's like people power.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56I sound like a granny, don't I?

0:10:56 > 0:10:58"It's amazing!"

0:10:58 > 0:11:00But it must have been a massive relief.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Huge. I, like, cried when it got played on the radio.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07I was so relieved. Keeping it a secret for so long, it was hard.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09- Oh.- I know, first-world problems.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Well, listen, it's a secret no more, it's a secret no more.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14- We're going to hear it, we're going to hear Hello.- Right.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- So, if you want to go over to band land.- Fantastic.- There you go.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20OK.

0:11:20 > 0:11:25So, here it is, this is a genuine worldwide exclusive.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29The first live performance anywhere of Hello.

0:11:29 > 0:11:30CHEERING

0:11:42 > 0:11:47# Hello, it's me

0:11:47 > 0:11:53# I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet

0:11:53 > 0:11:59# To go over everything

0:11:59 > 0:12:02# They say that time's supposed to heal you

0:12:02 > 0:12:06# But I ain't done much healing

0:12:06 > 0:12:12# Hello, can you hear me?

0:12:12 > 0:12:17# I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be

0:12:17 > 0:12:23# When we were younger and free

0:12:23 > 0:12:30# I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet

0:12:30 > 0:12:36# There's such a difference between us

0:12:36 > 0:12:43# And a million miles

0:12:43 > 0:12:49# Hello from the other side

0:12:49 > 0:12:54# I must've called a thousand times

0:12:54 > 0:13:00# To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done

0:13:00 > 0:13:07# But when I call you never seem to be home

0:13:07 > 0:13:13# Hello from the outside

0:13:13 > 0:13:18# At least I can say that I've tried

0:13:18 > 0:13:24# To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

0:13:24 > 0:13:30# But it don't matter It clearly doesn't tear you apart

0:13:30 > 0:13:34# Any more

0:13:37 > 0:13:41# Hello, how are you?

0:13:43 > 0:13:48# It's so typical of me to talk about myself

0:13:48 > 0:13:50# I'm sorry

0:13:50 > 0:13:54# I hope that you're well

0:13:55 > 0:14:01# Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?

0:14:01 > 0:14:08# It's no secret that the both of us

0:14:08 > 0:14:11# Are running out of time

0:14:14 > 0:14:20# So hello from the other side

0:14:20 > 0:14:25# I must've called a thousand times

0:14:25 > 0:14:31# To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

0:14:31 > 0:14:37# But it don't matter It clearly doesn't tear you apart

0:14:37 > 0:14:40# Any more

0:14:41 > 0:14:47# Ohh, any more

0:14:47 > 0:14:50# Any more

0:14:50 > 0:14:56# Hello from the other side

0:14:56 > 0:15:02# I must've called a thousand times

0:15:02 > 0:15:07# To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done

0:15:07 > 0:15:15# But when I call you never seem to be home

0:15:15 > 0:15:20# Hello from the outside

0:15:20 > 0:15:26# At least I can say that I've tried

0:15:26 > 0:15:32# To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

0:15:32 > 0:15:38# But it don't matter It clearly doesn't tear you apart

0:15:38 > 0:15:41# Any more. #

0:15:47 > 0:15:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Thank you very much.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Oh!

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Gorgeous, gorgeous.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Mwah! Oh, another one!

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Er, that is... That's a number one in...

0:16:08 > 0:16:11- Crazy. Like, all over the world. - Something stupid, yeah.

0:16:11 > 0:16:14- Yeah, mad, mad, mad. So, everyone's waiting for the album.- Yeah.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17When you were... I mean, was there a moment when you kind of thought,

0:16:17 > 0:16:19"OK, this is it, I'm in the groove.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23"This is up a gear. This is good enough"?

0:16:23 > 0:16:27Yeah, I think, when I sang the first verse of Hello,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30I think that was when I was like, "OK, this is like conversational.

0:16:30 > 0:16:31"This is real."

0:16:31 > 0:16:35I think we've read that there was a moment when you kind of thought,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38"You know what? 19, 21, really good albums, might leave it."

0:16:38 > 0:16:43I did. I just got really worried that I was never going to make anything

0:16:43 > 0:16:47that anyone liked again. It was just being self-critical of myself.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50It was nothing else other than that, and also I started to wonder,

0:16:50 > 0:16:54maybe 21 being so successful is enough for everyone,

0:16:54 > 0:16:55but I realised it wasn't enough for me,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58so sorry to make your ears bleed again,

0:16:58 > 0:17:00but, you know, it was that thing of,

0:17:00 > 0:17:03"Do I or don't I want to go, like, back to my music?"

0:17:03 > 0:17:04Obviously, I do,

0:17:04 > 0:17:08and I just wanted to make sure that everything was in place

0:17:08 > 0:17:10for me to do it, so that I could do it properly, you know?

0:17:10 > 0:17:12I can't do anything else. This is all that I like doing.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14And the songs on the first two albums,

0:17:14 > 0:17:16why people connected to them,

0:17:16 > 0:17:18it's that we really kind of saw into your soul.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20- I mean, they're really exposing. - On 19?

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- Well, both of them.- Oh, thanks.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25- You really kind of... It's you kind of laid bare.- Yeah.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28And I just wondered, this time, did you...

0:17:28 > 0:17:31- Were you more kind of guarded?- Yeah. - Were you more self-protective?

0:17:31 > 0:17:32Yeah, I was, just because, last time,

0:17:32 > 0:17:37no-one was waiting to try and work out what my songs meant

0:17:37 > 0:17:40and, you know, I was so open about what the songs were about before

0:17:40 > 0:17:43and, you know, I hurt people's feelings with that a little bit,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45do you know what I mean? Being so honest

0:17:45 > 0:17:49and, you know, being a bit more immature then than I am now,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51I was like, "I don't care, he broke my heart, whatever,"

0:17:51 > 0:17:53and stuff like that, so I felt quite bad about that

0:17:53 > 0:17:56and, you know, I have a lot of different things going on now.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58I have a family, you know, that I love and I'm a lioness

0:17:58 > 0:18:01and I want to protect them, you know, and stuff like that,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04so I'd also like people to interpret these songs how they want to

0:18:04 > 0:18:06rather than me shoving it down their throats.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08"This one's about the time I, like, punched him

0:18:08 > 0:18:11"and, like, went running down Oxford Street!"

0:18:11 > 0:18:14I would like people to interpret them...

0:18:14 > 0:18:15So everyone who's been in a song,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18- have they always worked out that it was them?- I don't know.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20I don't care, either.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21THEY LAUGH

0:18:21 > 0:18:24I'm at peace with all of them.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26All right? Fine.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27And do you...

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Are you?

0:18:29 > 0:18:31- Absolutely! I'm a mum.- Good.- Yeah.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34And we heard... we knew that you had vocal problems and...

0:18:34 > 0:18:36- Yeah.- You had an operation.- I did.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40So was there a moment when it mightn't have come back?

0:18:40 > 0:18:44No, never. I thought there might be. I was frightened for about a week

0:18:44 > 0:18:47until I had to fly to Boston to this guy.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49He was like, "This is a very common singer's injury,

0:18:49 > 0:18:52"I've done this a million times. Don't worry about it.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54"It can be dealt with." I was relieved.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56And is the voice exactly the same? Can you write...

0:18:56 > 0:18:58You write the same way for your voice? That isn't in your head?

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Well, at the very beginning, it changed. It was very clean,

0:19:01 > 0:19:05and, you know, obviously, I used to smoke quite a lot,

0:19:05 > 0:19:09so all the scars that my voice had from most of my life were gone.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11It was like a brand-new voice.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13- I can sing a lot higher than I used to.- Oh, really?

0:19:13 > 0:19:15And also a lot lower than I used to, yeah.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18She says! Now someone's going to challenge me and I won't be able to.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21And then... But, you know, after a while...

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Also, in my pregnancy, my voice got a lot lower,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25which is why Skyfall's so low. I don't really do very much...

0:19:25 > 0:19:29I couldn't get up there for Skyfall. Apparently, it's quite common.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Really? When you're pregnant your... How weird is that?

0:19:31 > 0:19:33DEEP VOICE: I was like that when I was pregnant.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36So that's why Skyfall's so low.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40But now it's kind of, you know, after like gruelling studio sessions,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42with me like singing like a demon, it kind of...

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Its wear and tear came back, in a good way, I think.

0:19:45 > 0:19:46- You're sounding great tonight. - Thanks.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49You've got some very dedicated fans, Adele, and you've always said

0:19:49 > 0:19:51that you'd like to share your success with them,

0:19:51 > 0:19:53so we had this idea.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56On the way in, as a very special treat, some of our audience

0:19:56 > 0:19:59got the chance to pose for a photograph

0:19:59 > 0:20:02with your actual, real, 100% genuine Oscar.

0:20:02 > 0:20:03No, really, this happened.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Who... Who'd want to ruin a moment like that?

0:20:06 > 0:20:08SHE CACKLES

0:20:11 > 0:20:14Three, two, one.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Three, big smiles, two, one.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Three, two, one.

0:20:28 > 0:20:29Straight down the lens to me

0:20:29 > 0:20:32and three, two, one.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39Big smiles, guys. Three, two, one.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45Three, two, one.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51Straight down the lens, guys. Three, two, one.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57Thank you. Brilliant. That's brilliant. Excellent.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Look behind you.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10- Three, two...- Hello, it's me.- ..one.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Two, one.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16Somebody's... Somebody's...

0:21:19 > 0:21:22- Hang on a minute, somebody's just walked in shot.- Hello.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24SHE SHRIEKS

0:21:28 > 0:21:30I was so nervous doing that.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34That lady wouldn't have been as excited if she'd won the Oscar.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37Whenever anyone comes round, they always want to see the Oscar,

0:21:37 > 0:21:41cos it's so mad, so I love letting people hold it.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45- It's so heavy!- And everyone who wins an Oscar goes, "It's so heavy!"

0:21:45 > 0:21:48It's all those, like, skinny girls,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50like, "Ohh!" But it is really heavy.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53In my speech, the most embarrassing thing, cut in there,

0:21:53 > 0:21:56- and I was like, "Oh, my God!" - But everybody says it.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59And I was saying to you that, when you were interacting with the fans,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02is... The way people react to you is lovely.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04It's almost like they're so happy to see you,

0:22:04 > 0:22:06but they're not like starstruck. It's like,

0:22:06 > 0:22:09- "It's Adele, we know Adele!" - Maybe that's why.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11- It's like, "Oh, it's Adele(!)"- No.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13No, I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15- But the thing is, keeping a low profile...- Yeah.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18- Like, all we know about while you were away...- I read the other day,

0:22:18 > 0:22:22someone described me as like seeing a unicorn.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23Like that's how rare it is.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26I am not a recluse! I go out every day.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29I've been to every museum, every park, every supermarket,

0:22:29 > 0:22:30every shopping centre.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33- What do you think I do on a rainy day with my kid?- I don't know.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36I don't lock him up inside,

0:22:36 > 0:22:37I just don't call the paps.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Is it true that, yesterday, the security guard

0:22:40 > 0:22:42- tried to stop you coming in here? - Yeah!

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Which is the story of my life, ask any of my friends.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47"It's me, Adele!"

0:22:47 > 0:22:49HE LAUGHS

0:22:49 > 0:22:50"Let me in!"

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Keeping a low profile, it's all very well,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56but, now, over the last few years, we know you had a baby,

0:22:56 > 0:22:58we know you had an Oscar. That's it.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00I passed my driving test.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02- Oh?- Yeah.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05- All right. I'd like to hear more about that.- OK.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08- Because it doesn't stop the rumour mill churning.- Yeah.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10So we thought we'd give you an opportunity

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- to set the record straight.- Let's do it. I've been waiting for ever.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- So we're going to play Rumour Has It.- OK.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18MUSIC: Rumour Has It by Adele

0:23:20 > 0:23:24Ooh. Ooh. So, what it is, some of these fans have been armed

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- with rumours.- OK.- And they're going to tell you what they are

0:23:27 > 0:23:29and we'll find out whether they're true or not.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- OK, off you go. What's your name? - I'm Katie.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35So rumour has it that you were a massive fan of the singer Gabrielle

0:23:35 > 0:23:38- at school?- Yes, I am. - So then you faked an eye injury

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- just to wear the patch. - I had conjunctivitis and...

0:23:40 > 0:23:42LAUGHTER

0:23:42 > 0:23:45..and it was towards the end of the virus that I was allowed to go back

0:23:45 > 0:23:48but because they were a bit wary, my mum got me an eye patch

0:23:48 > 0:23:50from a local pharmacy and she was so nice,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52she sewed on sequins, like Gabrielle.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55But it was a bit of a fan-girl moment, yeah.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58- My name's Alexandra. Hello, Adele. - Hello, Alexandra.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02Rumour has it you're not allowed access to your own Twitter account.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04- This is true.- Is that true?- Yeah.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07What? You can't tweet? You can't tweet as yourself?

0:24:07 > 0:24:09I mean, I'm not a drinker any more,

0:24:09 > 0:24:12but when Twitter first came out, I was like drunk-tweeting

0:24:12 > 0:24:16and, like, nearly put my foot in it quite a few times,

0:24:16 > 0:24:19so, yeah, my management decided that you have to go through

0:24:19 > 0:24:21two people and then it has to be signed off by someone,

0:24:21 > 0:24:23but they're all my tweets. No-one writes my tweets.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25They just post them for me.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28- So, yeah, that's very, very true. That's very true.- Wow.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31OK, I've got some more up here. Do you have one? What's your name?

0:24:31 > 0:24:34- Joseph from West Norwood.- Whoo!

0:24:34 > 0:24:35West Norwood!

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Oi-oi! Best years of my life!

0:24:37 > 0:24:41Rumour has it, Adele, that, for your 24th birthday,

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Rihanna sent you a topless photo

0:24:43 > 0:24:46and a cake shaped like a pair of pink boobs.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I've never heard that one. I wish. No. No, never.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53I met her once. She was amazing. But, no, that sounds...

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Honestly, I've never heard such rubbish.

0:24:55 > 0:24:59- Next year.- Next year, yeah, totally. - Do you have one?- Yes.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04- Oh, yes, she does. What's your name? - Mary-Jo.- Mary-Jo.- Hi, Mary-Jo.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Rumour has it, when you started your driver's lessons,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09your instructor didn't know who you were.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Well, I thought that. Yes, that's very, very true.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15I thought that until he went on loads of, like, TV shows

0:25:15 > 0:25:17talking about being my instructor.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19He was like, "I've never heard of you."

0:25:19 > 0:25:22He was going on about One Direction and Mumford & Sons and all that

0:25:22 > 0:25:24and he'd never heard of me and I was like, "That's great."

0:25:24 > 0:25:28And then I saw him on, like, a round-up of, like, a morning TV show

0:25:28 > 0:25:31and it was like, "Guess who this guy taught how to drive?"

0:25:31 > 0:25:34So, yeah. No, it is true that he didn't know who I was.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37- Did you pass first time?- I did. - Oh, well done.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39One minor.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41- Wow.- One minor.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Glad all that's been cleared up,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45but here's something I can tell you that's definitely true.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Adele is going to sing for us again.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51So here she is with the song itself - Rumour Has It.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58# Ooh

0:25:58 > 0:26:00# Ooh

0:26:00 > 0:26:02# Ooh

0:26:02 > 0:26:03# Ooh

0:26:03 > 0:26:07# She, she ain't real

0:26:07 > 0:26:12# She ain't gonna be able to love you like I will

0:26:12 > 0:26:16# She is a stranger

0:26:16 > 0:26:20# You and I have history or don't you remember?

0:26:20 > 0:26:23# Sure, she's got it all

0:26:23 > 0:26:29# But, baby, is that really what you want?

0:26:30 > 0:26:33# Bless your soul You've got you head in the clouds

0:26:33 > 0:26:37# She's made a fool out of you and, boy, she's bringing you down

0:28:25 > 0:28:28# Just cos I said it

0:28:28 > 0:28:32# It don't mean that I meant it

0:28:34 > 0:28:39# People say crazy things

0:28:39 > 0:28:42# Just cos I said it

0:28:42 > 0:28:44# Don't mean that I meant it

0:29:33 > 0:29:34Thank you very much.

0:29:37 > 0:29:38Great job!

0:29:40 > 0:29:42Mwah!

0:29:42 > 0:29:44Whoo!

0:29:44 > 0:29:46- Is that an easier one to do? - It's lower.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48It goes much lower!

0:29:48 > 0:29:50It goes quite low, yeah.

0:29:50 > 0:29:56- Now, let's talk about the track that isn't on 19, 21 or 25.- OK.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00- Er, Skyfall.- Yes. - Yeah, because that's...

0:30:00 > 0:30:02Were you tempted to put it on to 25, because it's...

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Actually, we did talk about it, at one point,

0:30:04 > 0:30:06but we felt like we were ripping everyone off.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09That song's not on any album anywhere,

0:30:09 > 0:30:12so we did consider it but then I thought it was a bit lazy,

0:30:12 > 0:30:15but there was a point where it was like a dry period.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18We were like, "Let's put Skyfall on, yeah?"

0:30:18 > 0:30:20Trying to rinse it out!

0:30:21 > 0:30:26So, again, you know, just incredible success, you know?

0:30:26 > 0:30:30- I know, I'm so lucky.- It did really well, and then an Oscar.- Yeah.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33- So, the night of the Oscars... - Was jokes.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36Well, it was crazy because it wasn't just you.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Like, who else was singing that night?

0:30:38 > 0:30:40Oh, my God, I know!

0:30:40 > 0:30:43The guys that directed and produced it were the guys that did, like,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45I don't know, they did all the musicals.

0:30:45 > 0:30:47They were beside themselves.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50It was me, Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand. Imagine me like...

0:30:50 > 0:30:52It was amazing.

0:30:52 > 0:30:56Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, the Les Mis cast,

0:30:56 > 0:31:00- which is like Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02All them lot. It was like... I think there were a couple more,

0:31:02 > 0:31:05but I was sort of in my, you know, own little boss-eyed world.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09On a night like that, because you're all performing,

0:31:09 > 0:31:10are you all equals?

0:31:10 > 0:31:12No. Babs.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Babs was the queen that day.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16She was amazing.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20- Did she behave like a queen?- Yeah, she behaves like Barbra Streisand,

0:31:20 > 0:31:22but that's great. She's Barbra Streisand.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25She's not like, "Out of my way!" She's lovely.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28I was nervous around her. She's one of my heroes.

0:31:28 > 0:31:33- And then... So you go, you sing, you win the thing.- I know.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35- Which is... That's a lot of icing on cake.- Yeah.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37It was really, really amazing.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40- Did you go to all the parties afterwards?- No. No, I was...

0:31:40 > 0:31:42I had to go back and feed.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44Oh, I see. Oh, I see, feed.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46I thought you meant like raid the fridge.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50- And that! And that! I think I definitely...- Adele's feeding.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53I definitely had an In-N-Out Burger,

0:31:53 > 0:31:55but, yeah, no, everyone else went and they had a laugh.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59- OK, we've talked about Skyfall, so off you go.- I will. Yes, please.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02- Off you go and get ready.- Thank you.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06With apologises to Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones,

0:32:06 > 0:32:10Duran Duran, Carly Simon and Sam Smith, all lovely songs,

0:32:10 > 0:32:14but, surely, this is the very best Bond theme of all time.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17It's the song that won Adele an Oscar. It's Skyfall.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41# This is the end

0:32:44 > 0:32:49# Hold your breath and count to ten

0:32:50 > 0:32:55# Feel the earth move and then

0:33:01 > 0:33:04# Again

0:33:04 > 0:33:06# For this is the end

0:33:09 > 0:33:15# I've drowned and dreamt this moment

0:37:50 > 0:37:52pretending to be me,

0:37:52 > 0:37:55and then, also, walking towards eight other girls dressed as me,

0:37:55 > 0:37:57I hadn't prepared myself for.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00It wasn't freak, or anything, just quite overwhelming.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03It made me really emotional. They had these really beautiful videos,

0:38:03 > 0:38:05almost like audition tapes.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08It really, really touched my heart.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10They were really beautiful and, yeah,

0:38:10 > 0:38:12walking towards them

0:46:36 > 0:46:41- Adeles! Adeles!- Oh, my God! - Meet your Adele!

0:46:41 > 0:46:43You were so good!

0:46:43 > 0:46:46I'm sorry! You are so amazing.

0:46:46 > 0:46:48I loved it. I loved it.

0:46:48 > 0:46:52- ALL:- # I know you haven't made your mind up yet... #

0:46:52 > 0:46:54Oh, my God! That is unreal!

0:46:54 > 0:46:57# ..But I would never do you wrong... #

0:46:57 > 0:47:00- It's Adele?! - Can't believe it!

0:47:00 > 0:47:01I'm gob-smacked.

0:47:01 > 0:47:04# I've known it from the moment that we met... #

0:47:04 > 0:47:06Get your hands out.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08# ..No doubt in my mind... #

0:47:08 > 0:47:10I can't actually believe it!

0:47:10 > 0:47:13I think I was maybe the last person to click that it was her.

0:47:13 > 0:47:15# I go... #

0:47:15 > 0:47:17ALL GIGGLE

0:47:17 > 0:47:21# ..I go running down the avenue... #

0:47:21 > 0:47:23As soon as she opened her mouth you could just tell.

0:47:23 > 0:47:25You can't mimic like that.

0:47:25 > 0:47:29# ..Nothing that I wouldn't do

0:47:29 > 0:47:33# To make you feel my love

0:47:33 > 0:47:36# Yea-ea-eah

0:47:36 > 0:47:41# To make you feel my love... #

0:47:41 > 0:47:44It was just beautiful, beaut...beautiful.

0:47:44 > 0:47:46Just...thank you!

0:47:46 > 0:47:49Aww! I know!

0:47:49 > 0:47:51So sweet!

0:47:51 > 0:47:54Did you think you would pull it off?

0:47:54 > 0:47:56- You did it! - No, I was so nervous about it.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59- They're all here as well. - They're all here.- They're all here.

0:47:59 > 0:48:03There they are. All the Adeles, and our brilliant decoy.

0:48:03 > 0:48:06- Thank you for being such good sports!- Thank you.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08Thank you.

0:48:08 > 0:48:09I was so nervous about it.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13I kept turning to my side cos my side profile was AMAZING.

0:48:13 > 0:48:17And they all thought I was being horrible, I was being snooty,

0:48:17 > 0:48:20but I was so nervous about them working out it was me.

0:48:20 > 0:48:23LOW-PITCHED VOICE: One minute I'd talk like this...and then ha-ha-ha!

0:48:23 > 0:48:26I thought I was going to give it away. But you were amazing.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29You've all got such great voices. I loved it. Thanks so much.

0:48:29 > 0:48:31All right, listen. Lots of Adele action, but we want more.

0:48:31 > 0:48:33So, what are you going to sing for us?

0:48:33 > 0:48:35- A new one from the new album, called Million Years Ago.- Ooh.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39Am I right, this was one of the last tracks to be done?

0:48:39 > 0:48:42Literally, while we were mastering the album,

0:48:42 > 0:48:44we were mixing this song to go on the record,

0:48:44 > 0:48:49- so yeah, it was really last minute that this song got put on.- OK.

0:48:49 > 0:48:52- But you chose to do it tonight? - Yeah. It's one of my favourites.

0:48:52 > 0:48:56It's kind of the story about... I drove past Brockwell Park,

0:48:56 > 0:48:58which is a park in south London that I used to live by,

0:48:58 > 0:49:02and it's where I spent a lot of my youth. Not my childhood.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04I didn't live there then.

0:49:04 > 0:49:07It has quite monumental moments of my life that I've spent there,

0:49:07 > 0:49:10and I drove past it and I literally just burst into tears.

0:49:10 > 0:49:12I really missed it, for no other reason

0:49:12 > 0:49:14- than we've all got different things going on.- Yeah.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16It's got nothing to do with me not feeling like

0:49:16 > 0:49:19I can't go and sit in there and drink a bottle of cider any more.

0:49:19 > 0:49:20It's more that we've all...

0:49:20 > 0:49:22Life happens, so I've got no-one to meet there.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24That's basically what it is.

0:49:24 > 0:49:25And it's just sort of about that,

0:49:25 > 0:49:28and about I never realised that this was going to happen.

0:49:28 > 0:49:31I never, ever realised, when I had my guitar in the park,

0:49:31 > 0:49:33like, singing to my friends, I never...

0:49:33 > 0:49:36we never in a million years thought this would ever happen,

0:49:36 > 0:49:38you know, so Million Years Ago.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40- So, yeah.- All right. Off you go.- Thank you.

0:49:42 > 0:49:47Now back to the start of my career, yes, this is Million Years Ago.

0:49:47 > 0:49:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:49:53 > 0:49:57# I only wanted to have fun

0:49:57 > 0:50:01# Learning to fly, learning to run

0:50:01 > 0:50:05# Let my heart decide the way

0:50:05 > 0:50:09# When I was young

0:50:09 > 0:50:14# Deep down, I must have always known

0:50:14 > 0:50:18# That this would be inevitable

0:50:18 > 0:50:22# To earn my stripes, I'd have to pay

0:50:22 > 0:50:26# And bare my soul

0:50:39 > 0:50:44# I know I'm not the only one

0:50:44 > 0:50:48# Who regrets the things they've done

0:50:48 > 0:50:51# Sometimes I just feel it's only me

0:50:51 > 0:50:56# Who can stand the reflection that they see

0:50:56 > 0:51:00# I wish I could live a little more

0:51:00 > 0:51:04# Look up to the sky Not just the floor

0:51:04 > 0:51:09# I feel like my life is flashing by

0:51:09 > 0:51:13# And all I can do is watch and cry

0:51:13 > 0:51:17# I miss the air, I miss my friends

0:51:17 > 0:51:21# I miss my mother, I miss it when

0:51:21 > 0:51:26# Life was a party to be thrown

0:51:26 > 0:51:31# But that was a million years ago

0:51:34 > 0:51:38# When I walk around all of the streets

0:51:38 > 0:51:43# Where I grew up and found my feet

0:51:43 > 0:51:47# They can't look me in the eye

0:51:47 > 0:51:51# It's like they're scared of me

0:51:51 > 0:51:56# I try to think of things to say

0:51:56 > 0:51:59# Like a joke or a memory

0:51:59 > 0:52:04# But they don't recognise me now

0:52:04 > 0:52:08# In the light of day

0:52:21 > 0:52:25# I know I'm not the only one

0:52:25 > 0:52:29# Who regrets the things they've done

0:52:29 > 0:52:33# Sometimes I just feel it's only me

0:52:33 > 0:52:38# Who never became who they thought they'd be

0:52:38 > 0:52:42# I wish I could live a little more

0:52:42 > 0:52:46# Look up to the sky Not just the floor

0:52:46 > 0:52:50# I feel like my life is flashing by

0:52:50 > 0:52:54# And all I can do is watch and cry

0:52:54 > 0:52:59# I miss the air, I miss my friends

0:52:59 > 0:53:03# I miss my mother, I miss it when

0:53:03 > 0:53:07# Life was a party to be thrown

0:53:07 > 0:53:12# But that was a million years ago

0:53:13 > 0:53:19# A million years ago... #

0:53:20 > 0:53:23CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:53:32 > 0:53:35This next one was the first song that I ever wrote,

0:53:35 > 0:53:37when I was about 16, and it's called Hometown Glory.

0:53:37 > 0:53:40It was all about how I felt about London and stuff like that.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43I actually wrote it on guitar and I was at school at the time.

0:53:43 > 0:53:46I got my friend at school to, like, transpose it onto piano,

0:53:46 > 0:53:47cos I probably could play it,

0:53:47 > 0:53:49but it would probably take about 12 hours,

0:53:49 > 0:53:51cos I'm such a snail on the piano,

0:53:51 > 0:53:54trying to sing and play at the same time.

0:53:54 > 0:53:56I actually find this song really emotional now

0:53:56 > 0:53:58because so much has happened since I wrote it.

0:53:58 > 0:54:01It's been, like, 11 years since I wrote it,

0:54:01 > 0:54:03so my whole career has happened,

0:54:03 > 0:54:05and it's one of my favourites, still, to this day,

0:54:05 > 0:54:08so this is Hometown Glory.

0:54:08 > 0:54:09CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:54:24 > 0:54:28# I've been walking in the same way

0:54:28 > 0:54:33# As I did

0:54:33 > 0:54:36# Missing out the cracks in the pavement

0:54:36 > 0:54:41# And tutting my heel and strutting my feet

0:54:41 > 0:54:45# Is there anything I can do for you, dear?

0:54:45 > 0:54:49# Is there anyone I could call?

0:54:49 > 0:54:53# No, and thank you, please, madam

0:54:53 > 0:54:58# I ain't lost, just wandering

0:54:58 > 0:55:01# Round my hometown

0:55:01 > 0:55:06# Memories are fresh

0:55:06 > 0:55:10# Round my hometown

0:55:10 > 0:55:15# Ooh, the people I've met

0:55:15 > 0:55:19# Are the wonders of my world

0:55:19 > 0:55:23# Are the wonders of my world

0:55:23 > 0:55:27# Are the wonders of this world

0:55:27 > 0:55:32# Are the wonders now

0:55:32 > 0:55:35# I like it in the city when

0:55:35 > 0:55:39# The air is so thick and opaque

0:55:39 > 0:55:44# I love to see everybody in short skirts

0:55:44 > 0:55:48# Shorts and shades

0:55:48 > 0:55:50# I like it in the city

0:55:50 > 0:55:56# When two worlds collide

0:55:56 > 0:55:59# You get the people and the government

0:55:59 > 0:56:04# Everybody taking different sides

0:56:04 > 0:56:07# Shows that we ain't gonna stand

0:56:07 > 0:56:09# Shows that we are united

0:56:09 > 0:56:13# Shows that we ain't gonna take it

0:56:13 > 0:56:15# Shows that we ain't gonna stand

0:56:15 > 0:56:20# Shows that we are united

0:56:20 > 0:56:23# Round my hometown

0:56:23 > 0:56:28# Memories are fresh

0:56:28 > 0:56:31# Round my hometown

0:56:31 > 0:56:37# Ooh, the people I've met, yeah

0:56:37 > 0:56:40# Doo

0:56:40 > 0:56:45# Di-di-di da-da-da day-da-aay, yeah

0:56:45 > 0:56:48# Doo

0:56:48 > 0:56:53# Di-di-di da-da-da day-da-aay, yeah

0:56:53 > 0:56:57# Doo, n-doo, n-doo, n-doo

0:56:57 > 0:57:01# Ohhh-ohh-oh

0:57:01 > 0:57:09# Yeah-ah-ah

0:57:09 > 0:57:13# Are the wonders of my world

0:57:13 > 0:57:17# You are the wonders of my world

0:57:17 > 0:57:22# Are the wonders of this world

0:57:22 > 0:57:24# Are the wonders

0:57:25 > 0:57:28# Of my world

0:57:29 > 0:57:32# Of my world

0:57:32 > 0:57:33# Yeah

0:57:33 > 0:57:36# Of my world

0:57:37 > 0:57:40# Of my world

0:57:40 > 0:57:47# Yeah-ah-ah. #

0:57:50 > 0:57:52CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:54 > 0:57:56Aw!

0:57:56 > 0:57:59I love that. I love it, I love it.

0:57:59 > 0:58:02There's something about that song.

0:58:02 > 0:58:05It just breaks my heart, cos I think about...the you,

0:58:05 > 0:58:07- the 16-year-old you. - I was little when I wrote that.

0:58:07 > 0:58:10- I was little, yeah. - And, like, who was she?

0:58:10 > 0:58:14Like, what...? How big were her dreams?

0:58:14 > 0:58:15I mean, I'd be lying

0:58:15 > 0:58:18if I said this wasn't what I always wanted to do, because it is.

0:58:18 > 0:58:21But that girl can't have known...

0:58:21 > 0:58:23No, never in a million years, did I think about this.

0:58:23 > 0:58:26I was just hoping to be gigging round London,

0:58:26 > 0:58:28headlining the Barfly at some point,

0:58:28 > 0:58:33- and, you know, I never even did that, I just sort of bypassed that.- Yeah.

0:58:33 > 0:58:37That was the song that went on Myspace, wasn't it?

0:58:37 > 0:58:41- Yeah, put it on Myspace.- When it got a few thousand hits on Myspace...

0:58:41 > 0:58:42Not even that!

0:58:42 > 0:58:45At the peak of it, it was maybe, like, 1,200.

0:58:45 > 0:58:49And that was mainly my friend Lyndon, who made the Myspace...

0:58:49 > 0:58:51He was my first superfan.

0:58:51 > 0:58:55He made the Myspace and the day I left college,

0:58:55 > 0:58:58he gave me the password and said, "I think you should do this now,

0:58:58 > 0:59:01"cos people are starting to e-mail." I thought XL, my label,

0:59:01 > 0:59:04I thought, "I can get a scouting job." They'd be, "She's got an

0:59:04 > 0:59:07"all right taste in music, let's get her in to look online

0:59:07 > 0:59:11- "for the next up-and-coming act," and then they signed me.- Wow.

0:59:11 > 0:59:13I didn't have a manager. They were, "Who's your manager?"

0:59:13 > 0:59:15"Dunno. Ain't got one."

0:59:15 > 0:59:18- And things happen, like you say, life happens, life changes.- Yeah.

0:59:18 > 0:59:22And one of the big things that happens in anybody's life

0:59:22 > 0:59:25- is to become a parent... - Yeah.- ..to be a mum.

0:59:25 > 0:59:28And what did that do to you in terms of just you as a person?

0:59:28 > 0:59:32It changed me completely in every single way possible

0:59:32 > 0:59:33and something much...

0:59:33 > 0:59:36you know, something much bigger than myself happened.

0:59:36 > 0:59:39I had been craving that, I think, without realising.

0:59:39 > 0:59:43There's a lyric in one of my songs which is about becoming a mum,

0:59:43 > 0:59:45which was that, "I find it funny

0:59:45 > 0:59:47"that you're the only one I never looked for."

0:59:47 > 0:59:49Because I was always, like, yearning for something

0:59:49 > 0:59:51and I never knew what it was.

0:59:51 > 0:59:53And, you know, then I got pregnant,

0:59:53 > 0:59:56and he makes me realise everything about myself

0:59:56 > 0:59:58that I like and I don't like, you know.

0:59:58 > 1:00:01I think that's why the album's sort of ended up

1:00:01 > 1:00:03becoming this sort of journey about how I make myself feel,

1:00:03 > 1:00:06rather than how someone else has made me feel,

1:00:06 > 1:00:07you know, that I've done before.

1:00:07 > 1:00:10You know, you've achieved this enormous success,

1:00:10 > 1:00:12you've worked hard, you've got lucky,

1:00:12 > 1:00:15- you know, you've grafted... - I'm very lucky.- ..to get here.

1:00:15 > 1:00:17And he's just popped into this world,

1:00:17 > 1:00:21he's just popped into all this success. Does that freak you out?

1:00:21 > 1:00:23Does that worry you for him?

1:00:23 > 1:00:25I think we're doing a great job

1:00:25 > 1:00:28and I think that we will do a great job.

1:00:28 > 1:00:32And, you know, I'm very conscious of how much my life has changed

1:00:32 > 1:00:36and how much his childhood will be very different to mine.

1:00:36 > 1:00:38- But- I- haven't changed.

1:00:38 > 1:00:40My life has changed. I haven't changed.

1:00:40 > 1:00:43We're going to hear something else new from the album,

1:00:43 > 1:00:46so is it kind of a happy-clappy song about skipping?

1:00:46 > 1:00:47When We Were Young?

1:00:47 > 1:00:50When We Were Young, it is a happy song.

1:00:50 > 1:00:52It sounds a bit "uhh"!

1:00:52 > 1:00:54Well, not like "uhh",

1:00:54 > 1:00:56but, you know, it's like a happy sad song.

1:00:56 > 1:00:59It will make you think of something that you love or loved.

1:00:59 > 1:01:02- In a nice way.- To me... I haven't heard the whole album,

1:01:02 > 1:01:07but the way you're talking, and Hello and Million Years Ago,

1:01:07 > 1:01:11it seems this kind of encapsulates what the album is,

1:01:11 > 1:01:14- kind of being 25... - When We Were Young?- Yeah.- Absolutely.

1:01:14 > 1:01:17When We Were Young is my favourite on the album.

1:01:17 > 1:01:20I wrote it with another artist, called Tobias Jesso Jr,

1:01:20 > 1:01:23who I love, and if you haven't heard of him you need to listen to him.

1:01:23 > 1:01:26He's so fantastic and so beautiful and kind.

1:01:26 > 1:01:27So that's one of the reasons,

1:01:27 > 1:01:30but also we spoke for hours before we sat down at the piano,

1:01:30 > 1:01:33and this song was what we spoke about,

1:01:33 > 1:01:36and it is, you know, becoming a parent,

1:01:36 > 1:01:41entering my late twenties - ugh! - I feel like I am saying goodbye

1:01:41 > 1:01:43to a little side of me and, again,

1:01:43 > 1:01:46it's got nothing to do with my career or being well known,

1:01:46 > 1:01:50- it's just what happens. Life happens. - What I love about this is,

1:01:50 > 1:01:54everyone remembers this. Even at my age, you remember that thing

1:01:54 > 1:01:57- of being 27 and suddenly realising 30's on its way.- Yeah.

1:01:57 > 1:02:00- And, "Oh, my God, this is my youth! I'm in it!"- Yeah.

1:02:00 > 1:02:04I remember things. When I was rehearsing it a couple of weeks ago,

1:02:04 > 1:02:07I remember the first time my best friend did my make-up

1:02:07 > 1:02:11for us to go clubbing, and it's still my favourite make-up look ever,

1:02:11 > 1:02:14and we've got a little photo-booth picture of it.

1:02:14 > 1:02:18I remember that, rather than think about that when I was writing it,
