0:12:44 > 0:12:48She loves being around people, full of energy.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Growing up, Alana did have eczema.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Lots of people have it, you treat it,
0:12:56 > 0:12:59and you just go on living your life quite happily.
0:12:59 > 0:13:00Three, two, one...
0:13:00 > 0:13:05But in 2014, Alana's eczema took a dramatic turn for the worse.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09She woke up one day, pretty much her whole body was red.
0:13:09 > 0:13:10Some parts of her skin looked like
0:13:10 > 0:13:13they'd been scalded with boiling water.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17It's a lot more serious than people might think it is.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19But it was, it was eczema.
0:13:19 > 0:13:23Alana's eczema was so severe she was admitted to hospital.
0:13:23 > 0:13:27I was just, like, really itchy and I couldn't stop.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31It felt like there wasn't any skin on my arm.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33It's horrible. People should never experience that in their life,
0:13:33 > 0:13:36that their child's in so much discomfort
0:13:36 > 0:13:38that they're pleading with you to stop the pain.
0:13:38 > 0:13:42She became quite self-conscious.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45It's not just the skin that's affected, it's her self-esteem,
0:13:45 > 0:13:47her self-image.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49My eczema did make me cry.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52I just wanted to have skin like other people.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01It was great. It's like seeing Alana as we know Alana to be.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04At the moment, Alana's eczema, it's under control.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06She will still have the occasional flare up,
0:15:06 > 0:15:08the difference now is we know what to do.

0:32:11 > 0:32:17Being told that actually he's going to die, that was quite a tough day.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29as Tyler's body began to shut down.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38After Tyler passed away, Andy got in touch and he just asked

1:16:01 > 1:16:03From the beginning, I remember him
1:16:03 > 1:16:05as being my little brother
1:16:05 > 1:16:08and my little soulmate.
1:16:10 > 1:16:13We first noticed that Thomas was becoming unwell
1:16:13 > 1:16:16in the first few days after we'd taken him home.
1:16:16 > 1:16:22He would regurgitate his feed and he felt very floppy to handle.
1:16:22 > 1:16:24He would spend long hours screaming.
1:16:24 > 1:16:27He was at his happiest when he wasn't being fed.
1:16:29 > 1:16:31After many hospital visits,
1:16:31 > 1:16:34Thomas was diagnosed with a rare disorder
1:16:34 > 1:16:37called chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction.
1:16:37 > 1:16:39This means his gut doesn't work.
1:16:41 > 1:16:45We had no other option but to fit a central line,
1:16:45 > 1:16:47which sits at the top of the heart,
1:16:47 > 1:16:50and to feed him directly into that line.
1:16:50 > 1:16:54We were told that Thomas was now considered to have a condition
1:16:54 > 1:16:58that was life-threatening and life-limiting,
1:16:58 > 1:17:04and it became real to us that Thomas will not survive into adulthood.
1:17:05 > 1:17:10To hear those words, that was the worst day of my whole life.
1:17:10 > 1:17:13I think we just sat in the car in silence, didn't we?
1:17:13 > 1:17:16Yeah, we didn't know what to say to each other.
1:17:17 > 1:17:21You never expect that one day you may bury your own child.
1:17:26 > 1:17:29With Thomas needing round-the-clock care,
1:17:29 > 1:17:31the family were introduced to Little Harbour,
1:17:31 > 1:17:36a safe and loving children's hospice which cares for children
1:17:36 > 1:17:37with life-limiting illnesses.
