0:00:02 > 0:00:04Ladies and gentlemen, Kiri Te Kanawa.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06APPLAUSE
0:00:09 > 0:00:11But, please, call me Kiri.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13# I feel pretty
0:00:13 > 0:00:14# Oh, so pretty
0:00:14 > 0:00:19# I feel pretty and witty and bright
0:00:19 > 0:00:21# And I pity
0:00:21 > 0:00:24# Any girl who isn't me tonight... #
0:00:26 > 0:00:27Good singer, that girl.
0:00:27 > 0:00:31# Let the bright seraphim in burning row... #
0:00:33 > 0:00:36I think that was a fairly nerve-racking one.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39I wasn't getting married, that was the best thing.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Arthur Kennedy from Burton on Trent expresses what so many of you feel.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45She's one of the greatest sopranos of modern times,
0:00:45 > 0:00:47it's live in the studio, Kiri Te Kanawa.
0:00:47 > 0:00:52# There's a dream I feel
0:00:52 > 0:00:58# So rare, so real
0:00:58 > 0:01:05# All the world in union... #
0:01:05 > 0:01:08I love to see all that old footage.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11If I look back, what you have is snippets of my life, I suppose.
0:01:13 > 0:01:19SHE SINGS: Ach, Ich Fuhl's by Mozart
0:01:25 > 0:01:28My first impressions of coming down the East End was the people were
0:01:28 > 0:01:31always talking, they obviously all knew each other and they were
0:01:31 > 0:01:33very friendly and they always asked how I was, I didn't know them.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36And so I was so shy, I wondered why they would talk to
0:01:36 > 0:01:38me and I would go and walk along the markets,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40with lots of stalls and things,
0:01:40 > 0:01:42there was the fruit and the daily produce.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44I always remember the ladies with the beehive hairdos,
0:01:44 > 0:01:47with their shopping bags full of potatoes and things.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51And the gentlemen would call out, "Hello, darling, how are you?"
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Things like that. It was great fun.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57Well, everyone knows this is
0:01:57 > 0:01:59the Troxy in the East End on Commercial Road
0:01:59 > 0:02:03but I only knew it as the London Opera Centre and it is
0:02:03 > 0:02:06the reason why I came to England.
0:02:06 > 0:02:07This building played a very,
0:02:07 > 0:02:12very important part in the beginning of my life as an opera singer.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15In fear and trembling I came through those doors in 1966.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19I was a terrified little bunny rabbit and I wanted to go back home
0:02:19 > 0:02:21for Christmas because I was so lonely.
0:02:23 > 0:02:28Well, it's about 20 years since I've been to this place -
0:02:28 > 0:02:30the old Troxy -
0:02:30 > 0:02:33and I can't imagine what it's going to look like.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40My gosh.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42It's actually more beautiful than I remember because it's
0:02:42 > 0:02:44all beautifully restored.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48Down here is where we used to rehearse The Marriage Of Figaro.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52This was the first big opportunity I had to do a major, major role.
0:02:52 > 0:02:54I suppose it was actually the only role that I knew,
0:02:54 > 0:02:57so I was rather stuck with the Countess in The Marriage Of Figaro
0:02:57 > 0:03:01and after that I had to start learning all sorts of other
0:03:01 > 0:03:04roles and so it was the sort of real bouncing board for
0:03:04 > 0:03:06me to start into an international career.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15It's always a pleasure to present a new and exciting talent on my
0:03:15 > 0:03:17show and tonight we have a young soprano from
0:03:17 > 0:03:20a Covent Garden opera company, for whom I predict a great future.
0:03:20 > 0:03:25Here to sing Puccini's lovely aria, Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta,
0:03:25 > 0:03:27is the beautiful Kiri Te Kanawa.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49APPLAUSE
0:05:49 > 0:05:53I started singing when I was back in New Zealand at a very young age.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54My mother encouraged me,
0:05:54 > 0:06:00I was taught by a nun and I went in for many competitions and
0:06:00 > 0:06:04I ended up leaving New Zealand when I was 21 to study, I thought,
0:06:04 > 0:06:07correctly and properly in England.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10MUSIC: Pokarekare Ana
0:06:27 > 0:06:31A natural laughing girl, singing the folk song of her people and happy
0:06:31 > 0:06:33out of doors.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Yet she is one of the most famous
0:06:35 > 0:06:37New Zealanders in the country's history.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41Kiri, we know that you're from New Zealand and we know you're of
0:06:41 > 0:06:43Maori descent,
0:06:43 > 0:06:46but will you clear up for us what perhaps we don't know about
0:06:46 > 0:06:48your origins?
0:06:48 > 0:06:54Well, when I was very, very young, about five weeks old, I was,
0:06:54 > 0:06:57according to my mother, brought to her doorstep and
0:06:57 > 0:06:59a darling lady said, "Would you like a little baby?"
0:06:59 > 0:07:03And she'd found out from the authorities that...
0:07:03 > 0:07:06that my mother was looking to adopt a baby.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08She said, "No, no, I don't want a baby,
0:07:08 > 0:07:11"no, that's not right," sort of thing. "I want a little boy."
0:07:11 > 0:07:14And so the lady went away and then when she came back again,
0:07:14 > 0:07:15which was three months later,
0:07:15 > 0:07:19and the same baby but slightly grown up, it seemed, a few more
0:07:19 > 0:07:23weeks older, my mother said, "Well, it must be meant to be ours," so
0:07:23 > 0:07:26she sort of went through the motions and she said, "Yes, I'll take it."
0:07:31 > 0:07:33I had so much love from my parents.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36They gave me everything they could possibly give me.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45See, I'm an open-air girl, I'm not really a city girl,
0:07:45 > 0:07:49I was brought up in the country. Spent my time on farms and things.
0:07:49 > 0:07:54I just love animals. I just love sort of nature itself.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57I love to get back to reality quite often. It's nice.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19# Love unspoken
0:08:19 > 0:08:22# Faith unbroken
0:08:22 > 0:08:27# All life through
0:08:27 > 0:08:33# Music playing, hear them saying
0:08:33 > 0:08:38# Love me true
0:08:38 > 0:08:44# Now the echo answers
0:08:44 > 0:08:49# Surely you can see
0:08:49 > 0:08:54# All the world's in love with love
0:08:54 > 0:09:01# And you love me
0:09:02 > 0:09:08# I hear the music play
0:09:08 > 0:09:12# It carries me away
0:09:12 > 0:09:14# All sorrow will have flown
0:09:14 > 0:09:20# When you are mine and mine alone
0:09:20 > 0:09:25# So that music seems to say
0:09:25 > 0:09:29# I'm still not saying anything
0:09:29 > 0:09:33# It's wanting you to sing
0:09:33 > 0:09:39# I love you so... #
0:09:46 > 0:09:49Placido was the most wonderful, wonderful colleague.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52I think, of all the tenors that I've worked with,
0:09:52 > 0:09:55I think he was the most agreeable. He had a beautiful voice.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57You know, you were always sort of amazed by this gorgeous voice
0:09:57 > 0:09:59coming out. But he was lovely.
0:09:59 > 0:10:05Great, great friend and we sang together many, many, many times.
0:10:05 > 0:10:09# Now the echo answers
0:10:09 > 0:10:15# Surely you can see
0:10:15 > 0:10:20# All the world's in love with love
0:10:20 > 0:10:31# And you love me. #
0:10:33 > 0:10:36So you sing with Domingo, so what? You know, he sings with me.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43Well, here we are at Wentworth in Surrey, one of the world's
0:10:43 > 0:10:47most famous golf courses, scene of many a classic encounter in
0:10:47 > 0:10:51its time and here we have another one for you just at this moment.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53Well, not bad for a beginner.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05And that's a sweet one, right up the middle of the fairway.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07I think he was better at football than golf.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13# Rejoice, rejoice
0:11:13 > 0:11:16# Rejoice greatly
0:11:20 > 0:11:27# Rej-oi-oi-oi-ce
0:11:27 > 0:11:29# Greatly
0:11:30 > 0:11:33# Oh, daughter of Zion
0:11:33 > 0:11:36# Shout, oh, daughter of Jerusalem
0:11:39 > 0:11:43# Behold, thy king cometh unto thee
0:11:43 > 0:11:44# Rejoice
0:11:47 > 0:11:49# Rejoice
0:11:51 > 0:11:55# And shout, shout, shout, shout
0:11:55 > 0:11:58# Rej-oi-oi-oi-ce
0:11:58 > 0:11:59# Greatly
0:12:03 > 0:12:08# Rejoice greatly Oh, daughter of Zion
0:12:08 > 0:12:10# Shout
0:12:10 > 0:12:12# Oh, daughter of Jerusalem
0:12:12 > 0:12:16# Behold, thy king cometh unto thee
0:12:16 > 0:12:21# Behold, thy king
0:12:21 > 0:12:29# Cometh unto thee... #
0:12:32 > 0:12:34His singing was wonderful but his conducting was a little
0:12:34 > 0:12:38bit... You always thought, "Hmm, come on, Placido, get on with it."
0:12:38 > 0:12:40Because he was conducting like a singer.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44And you couldn't always figure it out sometimes.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46One thing - I don't know all that much about opera,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49but learning about it is that opera singers tend to get better
0:12:49 > 0:12:51and better and better as they get older
0:12:51 > 0:12:54and people say that you've already got marvellous technique,
0:12:54 > 0:12:55you've got a very beautiful voice,
0:12:55 > 0:12:57what else is there left for you to do?
0:12:57 > 0:13:01What are you striving for to make yourself closer to perfection?
0:13:01 > 0:13:05All I'm trying to do is do the best I can with the music that
0:13:05 > 0:13:06is given me
0:13:06 > 0:13:09and the music that I choose, which is Mozart and Strauss, basically.
0:13:09 > 0:13:12I touch on Verdi and I touch on Puccini but I don't ever
0:13:12 > 0:13:15think that I will be one of those singers,
0:13:15 > 0:13:19I would like very much to specialise in Mozart and Strauss.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21You wouldn't ever do Wagner, for example?
0:13:21 > 0:13:23I don't think so, I don't think my voice would stand it.
0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Why not? What would happen? - I think it would all snap.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29- Gosh, how painful.- My voice happens to be a very delicate one.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31It's very highly tuned.
0:13:31 > 0:13:34As my singing teacher says, most singers can get up and just
0:13:34 > 0:13:38sing but it can go croaky on me if I'm learning.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41As it did about two weeks ago, I was learning and, oh, it just went,
0:13:41 > 0:13:44"Eurgh," and I thought, "How dare it?! Not now!
0:13:44 > 0:13:46"When I need you, don't let me down now."
0:13:46 > 0:13:49You talk to your voice, do you? As if it was a separate individual.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53Yes, it's a bit like playing golf. You have good days and bad days.
0:13:53 > 0:13:55I don't think it's at all like playing golf, is it?
0:13:55 > 0:13:57- It's exactly like playing golf, really.- Really?- Yes.
0:13:57 > 0:14:01If you don't do all the right things, it all goes sour on you.
0:14:15 > 0:14:20# Let the bright seraphim in burning row
0:14:25 > 0:14:30# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets blow
0:14:35 > 0:14:37# Let the bright seraphim
0:14:39 > 0:14:42# In burning row
0:14:42 > 0:14:47# In burn-ing-ing-ing row
0:14:47 > 0:14:53# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets blow
0:14:53 > 0:14:58# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets
0:14:58 > 0:15:08# Blow-ow-ow
0:15:10 > 0:15:12# Their lou-ou-oud
0:15:12 > 0:15:14# Lou-ou-oud
0:15:14 > 0:15:19# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets blow
0:15:26 > 0:15:31# Let the bright seraphim in burning row
0:15:33 > 0:15:36# In burning
0:15:36 > 0:15:39# Burning row
0:15:41 > 0:15:43# Their loud
0:15:45 > 0:15:48# Uplifted
0:15:50 > 0:15:53# Angel trumpets blow
0:15:53 > 0:16:01# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets blow
0:16:01 > 0:16:06# Their loud, uplifted angel trumpets blow... #
0:16:08 > 0:16:11I think that was a fairly nerve-racking one, yes,
0:16:11 > 0:16:14because there was so much involved.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16I wasn't getting married, that was the best thing.
0:16:16 > 0:16:19I only had to do it once and I had to do it exactly at
0:16:19 > 0:16:22a certain time, it was only going to last five or six minutes and
0:16:22 > 0:16:26as long as I got through that one, that's all I cared about.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28Ladies and gentlemen, Kiri Te Kanawa.
0:16:28 > 0:16:30APPLAUSE
0:16:36 > 0:16:38But, please, call me Kiri.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49I must say, it was a shock when suddenly my High Commissioner
0:16:49 > 0:16:52came to me and said, "Prince Charles would like to make you a dame."
0:16:52 > 0:16:55And I said, "What? You're joking!"
0:16:55 > 0:16:57And, of course, I remember it being on the news, they said,
0:16:57 > 0:17:01"She's not even in sort of International Who's Who,"
0:17:01 > 0:17:04and I accepted because I was very thrilled to do it.
0:17:04 > 0:17:10# There's a place for us
0:17:10 > 0:17:17# Somewhere, a place for us
0:17:17 > 0:17:22# Peace and quiet and open air

0:18:24 > 0:18:26hopefully they worked, you know?

0:22:28 > 0:22:32# Look, a new day
0:22:32 > 0:22:42# Has begun... #
0:22:45 > 0:22:48Are you ever frightened by the fact that you have achieved
0:22:48 > 0:22:53so much success at such a relatively young age?
0:22:53 > 0:23:00- Well, yes. You put it... Why didn't - I- say that? I'm terrified.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02It's too soon, I'm too young.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05Someone said to me just lately, it was really, really, sweet.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07"You know, Kiri, if you put your head above the horizon,
0:23:07 > 0:23:09"someone's going to shoot it down."
0:26:17 > 0:26:21The wear and tear with the operatic music is quite severe.
0:26:21 > 0:26:28And so I decided to do concerts to try and keep my voice in good shape.
0:27:30 > 0:27:34APPLAUSE
0:27:36 > 0:27:40- Well...- Thank you for asking me. - That was nice and short, anyway.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42What was that?
0:27:42 > 0:27:46Well, it was a funny little song and it really means, on the short
0:27:46 > 0:27:49side of it, "Unlucky is the man who doesn't have
0:27:49 > 0:27:53"a wife and equally unlucky is the man who does have a wife."
0:27:55 > 0:27:59Shrewd thinking by the Auvergne Noir, I would have thought.
0:28:24 > 0:28:27I now have the honour to present our all-star cast,
0:28:27 > 0:28:34with mighty soprani, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38Where are you? Excellent, wrong lady.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40There she is!
0:28:40 > 0:28:44I mean, with the very first rehearsal we did, they said,
0:28:44 > 0:28:47"He won't start the rehearsal, he won't start." And I said, "Why not?"
0:28:47 > 0:28:49They said, "Because he's nervous."
0:28:49 > 0:28:51# I feel pretty
0:28:51 > 0:28:53# Oh, so pretty
0:28:53 > 0:28:57# I feel pretty and witty and bright
0:28:57 > 0:29:03# And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight
0:29:05 > 0:29:07# I feel charming
0:29:07 > 0:29:09# Oh, so charming
0:29:09 > 0:29:13# It's alarming how charming I feel
0:29:13 > 0:29:15# And so pretty
0:29:15 > 0:29:19# That I hardly can believe I'm real
0:29:22 > 0:29:25# See the pretty girl in the mirror there?
0:29:25 > 0:29:28# Who can that attractive girl be?
0:29:29 > 0:29:31# Such a pretty face Such a pretty dress
0:29:31 > 0:29:32# Such a pretty smile
0:29:32 > 0:29:36# Such a pretty me
0:29:36 > 0:29:38# I feel stunning
0:29:38 > 0:29:40# And entrancing
0:29:40 > 0:29:44# Feel like running and dancing for joy
0:29:44 > 0:29:46# For I'm loved
0:29:46 > 0:29:52# By a pretty, wonderful boy... #
0:29:52 > 0:29:56He is a man of many emotions. You know, ups and downs, all over.
0:29:56 > 0:30:00And to see that coming from a conductor when conductors are
0:30:00 > 0:30:01very serious people.
0:30:01 > 0:30:04You see a tired, ageing maestro,
0:30:04 > 0:30:06where yesterday you saw...
0:30:06 > 0:30:10a tired ageing maestro, but less tired and less ageing.
0:30:10 > 0:30:15But to see this sort of animal working is, is quite amazing.
0:30:15 > 0:30:17You can see his moods from time to time,
0:30:17 > 0:30:21you see his frustrations, his happiness, his glee, his...
0:30:21 > 0:30:24his wanting to perform to people.
0:30:24 > 0:30:26That's the thing that makes the man interesting.
0:30:26 > 0:30:28You're constantly trying to read him.
0:30:28 > 0:30:30But really, he's on another planet,
0:30:30 > 0:30:32he's on a planet that no-one can touch.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34The man is just brilliant.
0:30:35 > 0:30:38# I love him
0:30:38 > 0:30:42# We're one
0:30:42 > 0:30:48# There's nothing to be done
0:30:48 > 0:30:54# Not a thing I can do
0:30:55 > 0:30:58# But hold him
0:30:58 > 0:31:04# Hold him forever
0:31:04 > 0:31:08# Be with him now
0:31:08 > 0:31:11# Tomorrow
0:31:11 > 0:31:15# And all
0:31:15 > 0:31:26# Of my life... #
0:31:36 > 0:31:41# When love comes
0:31:41 > 0:31:45# So strong
0:31:45 > 0:31:54# There is no right or wrong
0:31:55 > 0:32:02# Your love is
0:32:02 > 0:32:08# Your life. #
0:32:25 > 0:32:29'He is very lovely, the only thing is, I just had to say to him,'
0:32:29 > 0:32:32"Excuse me, Maestro," but I said, "You have got to stop smoking.
0:32:32 > 0:32:33"I cannot breathe any more."
0:32:33 > 0:32:38And he smoked through the whole of the rehearsals. It was horrible.
0:32:38 > 0:32:40I didn't shout or anything, I just said,
0:32:40 > 0:32:43"You have got to stop smoking, I can't do this any more."
0:33:30 > 0:33:33'I've known Roger for very many, many years, and he, I think,
0:33:33 > 0:33:36'is a great accompanist, a great colleague, and great support.'
0:33:36 > 0:33:39Fun to be on tour with because you need to have someone to talk to

0:34:39 > 0:34:42That's, yes, that's what I did naturally.
0:34:42 > 0:34:45I was just given the opportunity to sing classical music only,
0:34:45 > 0:34:49and became an opera singer and classical singer and still am.
0:34:49 > 0:34:51I didn't change.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54I was just given an opportunity to have a little diversion.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58The rain in Spain
0:34:58 > 0:35:02stays mainly in the plain.
0:35:02 > 0:35:03I think she's got it.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16APPLAUSE
0:36:19 > 0:36:23From a very early age, I knew somehow I was devoted to music.
0:36:23 > 0:36:25And music had to be my life.
0:36:25 > 0:36:27And I was never, ever allowed to desert it.
0:36:27 > 0:36:31And if I deserted, I felt that if I deserted music,

0:36:50 > 0:36:53I must say it is the highlight of my career, I truly say that.
0:36:53 > 0:36:57It's a totally different experience because an accompanist...
0:36:57 > 0:37:02is sort of, supports you, but I actually feel as though

0:37:07 > 0:37:10Control of the fingers, almost...

0:40:45 > 0:40:48It hasn't changed, and it's rather wonderful
0:40:48 > 0:40:53that throughout our life, can we go back somewhere and say,
0:40:53 > 0:40:55"You haven't changed at all."
0:40:55 > 0:40:59APPLAUSE
0:40:59 > 0:41:01- How are the auditions going? - Very good.
