0:02:28 > 0:02:32# Cos she couldn't help me with my mind... #

0:02:32 > 0:02:36As spring rolled around, the One Love concert in Manchester

0:02:36 > 0:02:38proved that music couldn't be silenced.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43# Her soul slides away

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Never, ever felt the power of music more than being

0:02:50 > 0:02:52in Manchester for that concert.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57One of Manchester's biggest rock and roll stars paid tribute.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59With all that kind of stuff that's going down

0:02:59 > 0:03:01and what had happened, I'd have walked there, you know what I mean?

0:03:01 > 0:03:03As summer hit, so did the festivals.

0:03:03 > 0:03:10# Staying alive... #

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Radiohead returned to headline.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14I thought it was a brilliant set.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17What a weird sing-along moment Karma Police is.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29# I am on my way... #

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Ed can do something which is really, really hard to do

0:03:32 > 0:03:35which is headline festivals on your own.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Dua Lipa became the only solo female artist this year

0:03:41 > 0:03:44to score a UK number one after she took Glastonbury by storm.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47# You'll be mine... #

0:03:47 > 0:03:51Glastonbury was the best day of my life.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52It just felt like such a step up.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55It's definitely up there with one of my favourite performances I've done.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Glastonbury, I love you!

0:03:58 > 0:04:00The Proms season gave us stellar performances

0:04:00 > 0:04:02with music from John Williams...

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Jarvis Cocker celebrated '60s artist Scott Walker.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18And the UK orchestra Chineke! showcased diversity

0:04:18 > 0:04:22in classical music as they made their Proms debut.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26I want the work of Chineke! to go so far

0:04:26 > 0:04:27that in five, ten years' time,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30we won't be having to have this conversation about

0:04:30 > 0:04:32trying to diversify the industry.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Music itself does not discriminate.

0:04:34 > 0:04:39So we've just got to get used to the fact that it's there for everyone.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Giggs was joined on stage at the Reading Festival

0:04:47 > 0:04:51by global megastar Drake who continued to champion grime.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56The thing about grime is that it's never really been

0:04:56 > 0:04:58accepted by the mainstream. So what it's had to do

0:04:58 > 0:05:00is create its own lane.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02And this year it proved how big that lane is.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07What a massive treat 2017 was for fans of live music

0:05:07 > 0:05:09and the festival line-ups were outstanding.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12At Glastonbury, Download, the Isle of Wight Festival

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and of course, our very own Radio 1 Big Weekend.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Which bring us to our first award of the night.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03# Reach out and touch faith... #

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Somewhere like Barrowland, it's tiny.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Everybody's standing up, everybody's chocker in there

0:06:07 > 0:06:10and seeing the whites of your audience's eyes,

0:06:10 > 0:06:12it adds a different frisson to the whole experience.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14I mean, you know, Gahan's used to doing

0:06:14 > 0:06:16his old snake hips routine

0:06:16 > 0:06:19down some massive walkway in the middle of the Hollywood Bowl.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24The energy was so reciprocal. He was throwing it out.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27But he was sucking it up from the audience

0:06:27 > 0:06:29and then he was throwing it back out again.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32To see him up there doing it, it's just a massive thrill.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41When Chic with Nile Rodgers played at Glastonbury,

0:06:41 > 0:06:43everywhere you looked, everybody was moving.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46# Good times

0:06:46 > 0:06:49# These are the good times... #

0:06:49 > 0:06:54The response from the people was, oh, my God, overwhelming.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Everybody say ho!

0:06:56 > 0:06:58It was the most joyous,

0:06:58 > 0:07:02feel-good live performances I've ever seen in my life.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04# The clock is turning, why hesitate? #

0:07:04 > 0:07:07You hear his influence in popular music,

0:07:07 > 0:07:09and the crowd reacted to that.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Chic, Chic, everybody!

0:07:12 > 0:07:16It was just incredible to watch the wave and to hear the wave

0:07:16 > 0:07:20of people singing and then have it move back beyond you was fabulous.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24Long live Nile Rodgers. Especially after that performance.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35I love Big Weekend because we got to take Katy Perry to Hull.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37That as a sentence is amazing.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39# Turn it up, it's your favourite song

0:07:39 > 0:07:42# Dance, dance, dance to the disco show... #

0:07:42 > 0:07:44She's just got so many great songs.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46And I love all the new ones.

0:07:46 > 0:07:51And she was so, like, vulnerable and strong at the same time.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53# We're all chained to the rhythm... #

0:07:53 > 0:07:56She came back with Chained To The Rhythm which was, you know,

0:07:56 > 0:08:00her voice, her opinion on the state of American politics.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I love that it had a message and it was political pop.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04# Keep it on repeat

0:08:04 > 0:08:08# Stumbling around like a wasted zombie... #

0:08:08 > 0:08:09But it was still a banger.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12# Chained to the rhythm. # No, we're not!

0:08:15 > 0:08:17There was so much hinging on this performance.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21I remember being nervous, "Oh, my God, what are they going to bring to Glastonbury?

0:08:21 > 0:08:23"They've got to do something really special."

0:08:27 > 0:08:30His exuberance, the energy, the enthusiasm,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32comes across to the audience.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33When they come on, they just blow you away.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41It was just an amazing lesson in how to do a headline set at Glastonbury.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47It was just the four of them on stage.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51If you'd been to see U2 in 1977,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54those were the people you would have seen on stage.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56The Joshua Tree was extraordinary.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59It was one of the best spectacles I've ever seen.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01The biggest screen I've ever seen.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02The U2 images, like,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05the screens that were behind them, were so impactful.

0:09:05 > 0:09:06You know, it's multisensory.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10I mean, they're one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12# Where the streets have no name... #

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Boy Better Know as a cultural phenomenon was crowned

0:09:20 > 0:09:22headlining the Other Stage at Glastonbury.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25To me, there's just nothing more electric

0:09:25 > 0:09:29and more contagious than the energy of Boy Better Know on stage.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32We need some more girls in here, we need some more girls in here!

0:09:32 > 0:09:34We need some more girls in here!

0:09:34 > 0:09:36It felt like a galvanising moment, everybody was going crazy

0:09:36 > 0:09:40and I had Too Many Man stuck in my head for about a month afterwards.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42# Too many man, too many, many man... #

0:09:42 > 0:09:44We'll come back to that performance in years to come

0:09:44 > 0:09:46to say, yes, that's when it all changed.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52So many for the judges to choose from.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55Clara, you witnessed this year's winners in the actual flesh.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57I did, and they are truly wonderful people.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59They did an amazing job for us in the Live Lounge

0:09:59 > 0:10:01back in LA in September.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04This year's BBC Music Live Performance Of The Year award

0:10:04 > 0:10:06goes to Foo Fighters.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18This year's winners for best live performance moshed

0:10:18 > 0:10:20in the Royal Albert Hall.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22They made Rick Astley rock in Japan.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26# Never going to run around and desert you... #

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Hey!

0:10:29 > 0:10:31But it was their headlining set at Glastonbury

0:10:31 > 0:10:33that clinched them the award.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37I'm about two years late tonight, I'm sorry.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40You know, we felt terrible about cancelling the first time,

0:10:40 > 0:10:41but we just couldn't make it.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45In the run-up to headlining Glastonbury in 2015,

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Dave Grohl broke his leg at a gig in Sweden.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51I think I just broke my leg.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53It took me a long time just to walk again.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57I kind of had to learn how to do everything again.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00I hadn't stood up and played a show in so long.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04So that gig was almost part of my therapy, in a way.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08I wanted to see if I can do this to 100,000 people.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12# It's times like these you learn to live again... #

0:11:12 > 0:11:18I felt like we had something to prove, coming back two years later.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20But I also felt personally it was kind of like

0:11:20 > 0:11:21I had to prove to myself that we could do it.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24# Easy for you say

0:11:24 > 0:11:27# Your heart has never been broken... #

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Everyone had built it up into such a big deal,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32like, you're doing Glastonbury, Glastonbury, Glastonbury.

0:11:32 > 0:11:38And I don't really think we realised how big of a festival it was.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41After the first three or four songs, we catch a glance

0:11:41 > 0:11:44with each other and we just kind of go, "Yeah, this is happening.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45"We got 'em."

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- We got a naked guy at that one too. - Yeah.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56I see a naked guy!

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Sure-fire sign that things are going well.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05# There goes my hero

0:12:05 > 0:12:07# Watch him as he goes... #

0:12:07 > 0:12:11It just had that sense of, like, we're stoked that you're here,

0:12:11 > 0:12:12and we're stoked to be there,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15and we worked really hard to get it as tight as we can.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18And then you have to lose the script and let it be loose again

0:12:18 > 0:12:21for it to really boogie.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25Right now, it's all about this,

0:12:25 > 0:12:28and you, and us.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31You know, and thank God it did there.

0:12:31 > 0:12:36# Someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you

0:12:39 > 0:12:45# Someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you... #

0:12:45 > 0:12:47The crowd wouldn't stop singing the part.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50And we sort of backed up and watched for a while, you know.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52- CROWD:- # Whoa

0:12:52 > 0:12:55# Whoa-oa-oa... #

0:12:55 > 0:12:58It's nice when you go up to give someone a concert

0:12:58 > 0:13:00and then they start giving it back so much

0:13:00 > 0:13:02that you can sit down and watch them.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05# Whoa, whoa... #

0:13:05 > 0:13:10It really did just turn into this one big ball of love

0:13:10 > 0:13:13and energy and celebration and music.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16And that's what you want every show to be.

0:13:16 > 0:13:21But when it's on that scale, it's a big feeling, you know.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27And I remember when we walked backstage, and you could

0:13:27 > 0:13:30still hear the audience singing that part of the song.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32# Whoa, whoa... #

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Damn, Sam!

0:13:36 > 0:13:39That's a fucking award right there.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- Thank you so much.- You get in the shot, baby, it's OK.

0:13:42 > 0:13:48I think we should thank all of our fans here in the UK

0:13:48 > 0:13:53because we really kind of cut our teeth becoming a live band here.

0:13:53 > 0:13:54Absolutely.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56You guys really taught us

0:13:56 > 0:14:01how to become a band that could headline a gig like Glastonbury.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05So, this is for all of us. Thank you all very much.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Definitely our second home, thank you so much.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Marvellous. This is fucking amazing!

0:14:15 > 0:14:19Foo Fighters giving a masterclass in just how to headline Glastonbury.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22There have been some memorable records released this year.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26The debuts, the tricky second album and the big hitters.

0:14:26 > 0:14:27Now, before we reveal the nominees,

0:14:27 > 0:14:29let's take a look at some of the albums

0:14:29 > 0:14:31that got us all talking in 2017.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36This year, Liam Gallagher was the comeback king,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39resulting in his album As You Were hitting number one.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42I think there's been no bigger pop comeback this year

0:14:42 > 0:14:44than Our Kid himself, Liam Gallagher.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47# You would keep the secrets in ya

0:14:47 > 0:14:49# You'd be keeping paraphernalia... #

0:14:49 > 0:14:522017 has been amazing, it's nice to be back talking about music

0:14:52 > 0:14:56instead of the drama that goes with my life, you know what I mean?

0:14:56 > 0:14:57I think that if he'd have come out there

0:14:57 > 0:14:59with the amount of bravado that he's got

0:14:59 > 0:15:02but the music didn't back it up, it would have fallen flat.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04# All night... #

0:15:04 > 0:15:08This is your first solo album, this is your chance to remind everyone how charismatic you are,

0:15:08 > 0:15:10and, you know, engender some of that goodwill

0:15:10 > 0:15:12you kind of earned over the years with Oasis.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14In the '90s, I'd have had about four people doing it.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Little geezer doing the kettle, our kid.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19Now you've got to do it yourself these days, do you know what I mean?

0:15:19 > 0:15:22And they wonder why there's no real rock and roll stars around.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24It's fucking good, man.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27# Wall of glass... #

0:15:29 > 0:15:32It's nice to get people realising that I'm not just a fucking lunatic,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I do sing and that I'm pretty good at it, you know what I mean?

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Who got the power?

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Little Mix have one of the biggest album sales of the year,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47and they even brought Stormzy on board.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50# You're the man... #

0:15:50 > 0:15:55I remember when I done this song with Little Mix, some people thought that questioned my integrity.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59I was, like, bro, I rate Little Mix more than I rate some of your favourite rappers.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02The Mercury Music Prize winner Sampha

0:16:02 > 0:16:06proved the album story is still important.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09It was really just surreal, to be perfectly honest.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- CHEERING - Sampha!

0:16:15 > 0:16:20# No-one knows me like the piano

0:16:20 > 0:16:22# In my mother's home... #

0:16:22 > 0:16:28I think Sampha is talking about mourning and loss and love and the relationship with our mothers.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30And I think that people can relate with that.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34People, after shows or at festivals, people talked about how much

0:16:34 > 0:16:36they'd been through situations with their own family,

0:16:36 > 0:16:38that had been similar to mine.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Nothing beats listening to an album for the very first time

0:16:40 > 0:16:42and hearing the journey that an artist has gone on,

0:16:42 > 0:16:47and listening and appreciating the feeling and the care that has gone into that entire album.

0:16:47 > 0:16:52Remembering something, even if it's difficult, is better than completely forgetting how it felt.

0:16:52 > 0:16:57U2 told us another story this year, with their album Songs Of Experience.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59# I could sing it to you all night, all night

0:16:59 > 0:17:03# If I could, I'd make it all right, all right

0:17:03 > 0:17:06# Nothing's stopping you except what's inside

0:17:06 > 0:17:11# I can help you, but it's your fight, your fight... #

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Another Mercury nominee, J Hus carved out a new British sound.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17# Doing styles on them like it's common sense... #

0:17:17 > 0:17:21It's just a record that sounds like 2017,

0:17:21 > 0:17:26and there's such a kind of joy and ebullience to the execution.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28# She love a ugly man making pretty money

0:17:28 > 0:17:30# And I'm a ugly man making sexy money... #

0:17:30 > 0:17:33You know, that is the best of British music, isn't it,

0:17:33 > 0:17:36when you listen to an album and you're like, I haven't heard anything like this before.

0:17:36 > 0:17:37# Yeah, yeah... #

0:17:37 > 0:17:43This year, streaming has become the definitive method of consuming music.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47Jay-Z released his 13th album on his own Tidal streaming label.

0:17:47 > 0:17:53Tidal gave Kanye West the first album certified as gold.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55- # But we still hood famous - Goddamn

0:17:55 > 0:17:58# Yeah, we still hood famous... #

0:17:58 > 0:18:01The idea that we now have a certified gold album

0:18:01 > 0:18:04purely from digital sales and/or streaming

0:18:04 > 0:18:06is saying quite loudly that streaming is here,

0:18:06 > 0:18:08it's not going anywhere.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11But vinyl sales were on the rise, too, this year,

0:18:11 > 0:18:16and the Beatles' iconic Sgt Pepper album topped the charts on its 50th birthday.

0:18:16 > 0:18:21An album like Sgt Pepper is a record that was life-changing.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Its vision was just so incredible.

0:18:24 > 0:18:29# We're Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band... #

0:18:29 > 0:18:32It's as famous an image as anything by David Hockney or anything

0:18:32 > 0:18:36you might go and buy a poster from the Tate and stick up on your wall.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39It totally blew my mind. That is real psychedelia there for you.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43# I don't like your little games... #

0:18:43 > 0:18:46It was a social media blackout for Taylor Swift.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48This year, Taylor deleted her Instagram,

0:18:48 > 0:18:53put out a viral video with no explanation and did a track

0:18:53 > 0:18:55and it was at the top of iTunes.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57# Ooh, look what you made me do

0:18:57 > 0:18:59# Look what you made me do

0:18:59 > 0:19:01# Look what you just made me do

0:19:01 > 0:19:04# Look what you just made me... #

0:19:05 > 0:19:08George Michael was number one ten months after his death,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11with the reissue of his second solo album,

0:19:11 > 0:19:15complete with Nile Rodgers collaboration Fantasy.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Even though we had worked together in the past,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21the fact that we worked together on the new product,

0:19:21 > 0:19:23then it came to such a tragic end,

0:19:23 > 0:19:26that I had to refocus and complete the record.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29# I'll find another fantasy... #

0:19:31 > 0:19:35He is just extraordinary, he's a national treasure.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38# I'll find another fantasy. #

0:19:38 > 0:19:43And Sam Smith returned with his second album, The Thrill Of It All.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47# I'm way too good at goodbyes... #

0:19:47 > 0:19:50I was just really scared that people didn't want to hear me sing again,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53and the reception has just been overwhelming.

0:19:53 > 0:19:58# I'm way too good at goodbyes. #

0:19:58 > 0:20:01There were some excellent albums released this year.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03There sure were, but who is going to be

0:20:03 > 0:20:06on the shortlist for British Album Of The Year?

0:20:06 > 0:20:09# You're getting way too big for your boots

0:20:09 > 0:20:10# You're never too big for the boot... #

0:20:14 > 0:20:16# Singing oh-oh-oh... #

0:20:19 > 0:20:23# Mmm, I'm in love with the shape of you... #

0:20:25 > 0:20:28# I'm only human after all

0:20:28 > 0:20:31# I'm only human after all... #

0:20:34 > 0:20:36# Don't be afraid to catch feels... #

0:20:38 > 0:20:41# I've got new rules I count 'em... #

0:20:50 > 0:20:54You needed an album that came along from somebody that had

0:20:54 > 0:20:57that kind of bone fide star quality, and that was Stormzy.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59# You're getting way too big for your boots

0:20:59 > 0:21:01# You're never too big for the boot

0:21:01 > 0:21:03# I've got the big size twelves on my feet

0:21:03 > 0:21:04# Your face ain't big for my boot... #

0:21:04 > 0:21:08To see Stormzy's Gang Signs & Prayer go to number one was really exciting.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11He has not cowed to the mainstream at all to make that record.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13# That's a Hublot, not a Hublot What? #

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Enlisting someone like Fraser T Smith, who has produced

0:21:16 > 0:21:19complete albums that have done well in the pop market.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21# Leave my yard, blow a kiss to my girl... #

0:21:21 > 0:21:26But also enabled you to sound like yourself, and that's why the album did so well.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29Yeah, it's good, man, because they are the same as me.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31We're all from, like, the street, as it is.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33# You're getting way too old for the timeline... #

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Stormzy's album cover for Gang Signs & Prayer

0:21:36 > 0:21:38is the album cover of the year.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40That is amazing. I loved it.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Gang Signs & Prayer signalled the arrival of grime

0:21:44 > 0:21:47as a proper overground, mainstream entity.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58I really like the xx record. I think it is really beautiful

0:21:58 > 0:22:01and colourful and it's nice to see them doing something different

0:22:01 > 0:22:04and moving out of that very monochromatic space they've operated in.

0:22:04 > 0:22:10# Singing oh-oh-oh Go on, I dare you... #

0:22:10 > 0:22:14It's weird, it's like they've almost got happy on it.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17You've got like major key tracks on it, you've got samples on it.

0:22:17 > 0:22:23# Singing oh-oh-oh Go on, I dare you... #

0:22:23 > 0:22:26I felt it to be intimate and touching and honest,

0:22:26 > 0:22:29but it was...I don't know, it felt a bit more ballsy.

0:22:29 > 0:22:36# I can hear it now like I heard it then... #

0:22:36 > 0:22:40And so brilliantly crafted. I think they're just head and shoulders

0:22:40 > 0:22:41above most of the bands around at the moment.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Ed Sheeran is just this unstoppable hit machine.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55He just reinvents things all the time.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58# The club isn't the best place to find a lover

0:22:58 > 0:22:59# So the bar is where I go... #

0:22:59 > 0:23:03It's hard to write a song that's all over Radio 1 and all over Radio 2,

0:23:03 > 0:23:06and The Shape Of You, I've never turned it off.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09# I'm in love with your body OhIohIohIohI... #

0:23:09 > 0:23:12The way the top line, the way the melody corresponds to what is

0:23:12 > 0:23:16playing underneath, which almost pushes in a kind of almost jazzy direction.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19# I'm in love with your body OhIohIohIohI... #

0:23:19 > 0:23:23I mean, Ed Sheeran was already huge, but The Shape Of You just took him to another level.

0:23:25 > 0:23:26When you listen to ¸,

0:23:26 > 0:23:28there's Afro beat on there,

0:23:28 > 0:23:32there's Springsteen-esque global kind of stadium rock on there,

0:23:32 > 0:23:35there's dance hall on there, there's out-and-out pop on there, there's ballads on there,

0:23:35 > 0:23:38there's pretty much a record for every emotion.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40And that's what Ed does. He's such a great songwriter,

0:23:40 > 0:23:44that I've got a feeling we will be talking about him in 50 years' time.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46# I'm in love with the shape of you. #

0:23:52 > 0:23:55I think Best British Album Of The Year for me,

0:23:55 > 0:23:57it will always be Rag'n'Bone Man.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59I just...I love the album, I absolutely love it.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02# Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind... #

0:24:02 > 0:24:08This year, obviously, with them having the biggest selling debut album of any other artist,

0:24:08 > 0:24:14I think it proves that he has truly not only found his voice, but he's also found his audience.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17I think every song that has come off the album, I've heard it on

0:24:17 > 0:24:21the radio umpteen times and I'm still not tired of Rag'n'Bone Man.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24# I'm only human after all

0:24:24 > 0:24:27# I'm only human after all

0:24:27 > 0:24:29# Don't put the blame on me... #

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Just channelled something that really infects all of us.

0:24:32 > 0:24:38He's talked about a human experience, and I think that that then speaks to quite a lot of us.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39# Don't put the blame on me... #

0:24:39 > 0:24:41You can if you want.

0:24:45 > 0:24:49# Woo! Don't be afraid to catch feels... #

0:24:49 > 0:24:51You can see playlisting influencing the way records sound.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55If you look at the last Calvin Harris album, it's basically a mix tape.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Every song has about eight different guests on it. It sounds wildly different all the way through.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01And although it's a cohesive, kind of artistic statement,

0:25:01 > 0:25:03it's also doing the same thing of trying to please a lot of people.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07# Oh, you can't front You're a stone-cold diva... #

0:25:07 > 0:25:10It was very bold, I guess, being like, "This is the sound,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13"and all you 10 or 15 different artists will fit to that."

0:25:13 > 0:25:17Felt like it all worked as one piece of music. I love that record.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24# One, don't pick up the phone

0:25:24 > 0:25:26# You know he's only calling cos he's drunk and alone

0:25:26 > 0:25:28- # Two, don't let him in... # - With an artist like Dua Lipa,

0:25:28 > 0:25:32she can be easily taken as a bit of a pop puppet

0:25:32 > 0:25:33because we've spent so many years

0:25:33 > 0:25:37of having female pop artists come through and them being manufactured.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38Dua Lipa's not that.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41# I've got new rules, I count 'em

0:25:42 > 0:25:45# I've got new rules, I count 'em... #

0:25:45 > 0:25:47She co-writes her songs, she helps produce the songs.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50The records that she's got on that album and the pop songs she's done

0:25:50 > 0:25:54are brilliantly written, well-performed songs.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56# ..You ain't getting over him. #

0:25:58 > 0:26:01Time for the winner of British Album of the Year.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05Our winner started 2017 brilliantly by scoring two Brit Awards

0:26:05 > 0:26:08and having the biggest-selling debut album of the year.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12His New Year's resolution is always "must try harder".

0:26:12 > 0:26:15Here with a very special performance of Grace,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18it is the fantastic Rag'n'Bone Man.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55# Said I loved you

0:26:55 > 0:27:01# Without hesitation

0:27:02 > 0:27:06# So easy

0:27:06 > 0:27:11# For you to break my foolish heart

0:27:13 > 0:27:16# Now I wonder

0:27:17 > 0:27:22# If you ever speak my name

0:27:24 > 0:27:28# Will I always

0:27:28 > 0:27:33# Be defined by my mistakes?

0:27:35 > 0:27:41# In the arms of a saint I'm a stranger

0:27:41 > 0:27:47# We're all trying to find our way

0:27:48 > 0:27:55# At the death of every darkness there's a morning

0:27:55 > 0:27:58# Though we all try

0:27:58 > 0:28:01# We all try

0:28:02 > 0:28:06# We're all one step from grace

0:28:09 > 0:28:11# I made myself believe

0:28:11 > 0:28:16# There was no fight left in me

0:28:19 > 0:28:22# But redemption

0:28:22 > 0:28:27# Doesn't fall down at your feet

0:28:29 > 0:28:31# In the half light

0:28:31 > 0:28:37# I raised a hand to my defeat

0:28:38 > 0:28:42# And I watched the walls fall

0:28:42 > 0:28:47# And I rebuilt them piece by piece

0:28:49 > 0:28:55# In the arms of a saint I'm a stranger

0:28:55 > 0:29:00# We're all trying to find our way

0:29:02 > 0:29:07# At the death of every darkness there's a morning

0:29:09 > 0:29:11# Though we all try

0:29:12 > 0:29:14# We all try

0:29:15 > 0:29:19# We're all one step from grace

0:29:23 > 0:29:28# I wonder why we give up on love

0:29:31 > 0:29:35# When it's always within reach

0:29:37 > 0:29:42# You and I We suffered this enough

0:29:42 > 0:29:45# We all try

0:29:46 > 0:29:49# We all try

0:29:50 > 0:29:54# We're all one step from grace

0:29:57 > 0:30:02# And in the arms of a saint I'm a stranger

0:30:02 > 0:30:08# We're all trying to find our way

0:30:09 > 0:30:15# At the death of every darkness there's a morning

0:30:16 > 0:30:19# Though we all try

0:30:19 > 0:30:23# We all try

0:30:23 > 0:30:29# We're all one step from grace. #

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Thank you very much.

0:30:38 > 0:30:39That's a proper good award.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Er, I keep thinking at some point someone's going to fish-hook me off

0:30:43 > 0:30:45and tell me it's a joke,

0:30:45 > 0:30:48but it's not, and it's a wonderful thing to have.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51So thank you very much to everyone at the BBC

0:30:51 > 0:30:53for supporting my music over the years.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56Big up to Radio 1, especially people like MistaJam

0:30:56 > 0:30:58and Huw Stephens, for supporting me.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02All the musicians that I work with, my management and my label.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05Yeah. Thank you very much.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Huge congratulations to Rag'n'Bone Man.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11In recent times, we have seen some horrific events

0:31:11 > 0:31:14take place during music performances,

0:31:14 > 0:31:17from the Bataclan in Paris to what happened in Las Vegas.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20In May, however, it was closer to home

0:31:20 > 0:31:24when Ariana Grande's concert at Manchester Arena was targeted.

0:31:24 > 0:31:26After that life-changing event,

0:31:26 > 0:31:29Ariana and some of pop's biggest artists rallied

0:31:29 > 0:31:32and returned to Manchester for a special concert,

0:31:32 > 0:31:34and it was an amazing night to witness.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38We look back on how One Love Manchester united the nation

0:31:38 > 0:31:39with music.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44Breaking news out of Greater Manchester.

0:31:44 > 0:31:47A major incident involving what many people

0:31:47 > 0:31:50are suggesting has been an explosion.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52This is at the Manchester Arena.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54SIRENS

0:31:54 > 0:31:57I don't know if it was the age of the kids at the concert...

0:31:57 > 0:32:02It felt extra hard hearing that news and dealing with that news.

0:32:02 > 0:32:06Music has been touched by the terror incidents that have been happening

0:32:06 > 0:32:10and I think it's... It's changed everything. Everything's changed.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17But it wasn't long before the people of Manchester came back fighting.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20It was amazing to see so many different people

0:32:20 > 0:32:22from so many different backgrounds

0:32:22 > 0:32:25just centring around this idea that they won't be broken.

0:32:25 > 0:32:27Basically a big up-yours to terrorism,

0:32:27 > 0:32:29and I'm glad that it came from music.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32It was great to see how the city reacted to it and came together.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35I think it was the right thing to do and they did it really well.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39# Her soul slides away

0:32:39 > 0:32:42CROWD: # But don't look back in anger

0:32:42 > 0:32:44# I heard you say. #

0:32:45 > 0:32:48It's good when people go to a song

0:32:48 > 0:32:52and find...strength in music,

0:32:52 > 0:32:55whether it's Oasis or whatever. It's good.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59Ariana Grande announced this -

0:32:59 > 0:33:03the One Love Manchester benefit concert this Sunday.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05The way that Ariana Grande responded to that,

0:33:05 > 0:33:08I think she went absolutely above and beyond what could have been

0:33:08 > 0:33:10expected from anybody, let alone a very young woman

0:33:10 > 0:33:12who's experienced something deeply traumatic.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18On 4th June, only 13 days after the tragedy,

0:33:18 > 0:33:21Ariana, along with other artists and the people of Manchester,

0:33:21 > 0:33:24turned out in unity and defiance.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26The way everyone came together

0:33:26 > 0:33:29so soon after shows that, you know...

0:33:29 > 0:33:31Our faith is stronger than our fear.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35Music was Olivia's life. If she was still here today,

0:33:35 > 0:33:38she'd have been walking through these doors tonight with us,

0:33:38 > 0:33:42showing her defiance that they might have got her, but she's not beaten.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44She's here with us.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46It felt like an army of people who were doing good,

0:33:46 > 0:33:48and people caring for one another.

0:33:48 > 0:33:53- # Because I'm happy- Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof

0:33:53 > 0:33:59- # Because I'm happy- Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth

0:33:59 > 0:34:01# Because I'm happy... #

0:34:01 > 0:34:04For her to recognise that communal euphoria

0:34:04 > 0:34:07is just as powerful as communal mourning

0:34:07 > 0:34:10and commensurate to that, I think was wonderful.

0:34:10 > 0:34:14# Her soul slides away

0:34:15 > 0:34:17# Don't look back in anger... #

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Music is emotion, isn't it?

0:34:19 > 0:34:23And I think it gives people the opportunity to express emotion.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25# At least not today. #

0:34:25 > 0:34:27Thank you.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30It brings people back together again.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32Manchester!

0:34:34 > 0:34:36With all that kind of stuff going down and what had happened,

0:34:36 > 0:34:38I'd have walked there, you know what I mean?

0:34:38 > 0:34:40# Tonight

0:34:40 > 0:34:42# I'm a rock'n'roll star. #

0:34:42 > 0:34:44When shit like that goes down,

0:34:44 > 0:34:46whether it's in your country or someone else's,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49and if you can help out by doing a tune, you know what I mean,

0:34:49 > 0:34:52or being there... I did it, you know what I mean?

0:34:52 > 0:34:55# Maybe I will never be

0:34:55 > 0:34:57# All the things that I'd like to be... #

0:34:57 > 0:35:00It was surprising to see Liam Gallagher and Chris Martin

0:35:00 > 0:35:02given their... I don't know if it's a war of words,

0:35:02 > 0:35:05I think it's more Liam calling Chris a geography teacher,

0:35:05 > 0:35:07but if there's a spirit of the event,

0:35:07 > 0:35:09that those two can perform together, that's it.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13# We're gonna live forever. #

0:35:13 > 0:35:16But, you know, there was a lot of love in there, you know what I mean?

0:35:16 > 0:35:19So, it's a good thing to do, even though we shouldn't have to be doing them,

0:35:19 > 0:35:22but... Just, them things shouldn't have to happen, innit.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25# I was a liar I gave in to the fire

0:35:25 > 0:35:28# I know I should've fought it At least I'm being honest. #

0:35:28 > 0:35:31What I saw a lot was a real celebration of girls still

0:35:31 > 0:35:34feeling like they connected to Ariana Grande.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36Or there were still somebody who they could reach out on

0:35:36 > 0:35:37and feel empowered by.

0:35:37 > 0:35:41# One last time I need to be

0:35:41 > 0:35:44# The one who takes you home. #

0:35:44 > 0:35:47I've never ever felt the power of music more than

0:35:47 > 0:35:50being in Manchester for that concert.

0:35:50 > 0:35:57# Somewhere over the rainbow. #

0:35:58 > 0:36:01All eyes were on Manchester, after something so heartbreaking

0:36:01 > 0:36:06and horrific happening. It was... It was a real moment.

0:36:07 > 0:36:11Thank you so much, I love you. CROWD CHEERS

0:36:11 > 0:36:13CLAUDIA: Such an amazing response

0:36:13 > 0:36:16and our heartfelt wishes to all those affected.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19It was a concept which gave hope to so many

0:36:19 > 0:36:23and you really felt how music united us all that night in Manchester.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27And it's brilliant to see that the arena reopened so soon after.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31That concert will be the defining moment of 2017.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33This year saw the return of some of the greats,

0:36:33 > 0:36:35from Jay-Z to Liam Gallagher.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38But what if you're not a global megastar?

0:36:38 > 0:36:43How do you break into music if you're a new artist in 2017?

0:36:45 > 0:36:48This year, in 2017,

0:36:48 > 0:36:51is in my mind possibly the easiest it's been to access

0:36:51 > 0:36:55the industry, particularly in terms of being able to release records.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58I feel like it's pretty easy to get your voice heard these days.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01Getting your stuff onto big retailers like Spotify or

0:37:01 > 0:37:03Apple Music.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06I got picked up off the back of one single release, basically

0:37:06 > 0:37:09that I just did it with...with a mate.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13# He talks like an angel but he looks like me. #

0:37:13 > 0:37:16From self releasing to recording your masterpiece in your bedroom,

0:37:16 > 0:37:21in 2017 it seemed the opportunities to be heard are limitless.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23There's kind of like a blueprint, of like, you can do this, you can

0:37:23 > 0:37:26make the music you want to make and you can keep at it.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28Don't be afraid to just, like, be, a bit cheeky

0:37:28 > 0:37:29and just put yourself out there.

0:37:29 > 0:37:33Right now is a really, really amazing time for people

0:37:33 > 0:37:36wanting to see artists really being themselves.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38# Do it, do it, do it, do it. #

0:37:38 > 0:37:41There's so many artists who have come out now

0:37:41 > 0:37:43and they know who they are from the very beginning.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45Like, they are their own A&R person.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48Some people just e-mail me

0:37:48 > 0:37:51and there's a certain thing in what they say and I think, "Oh, sod it,

0:37:51 > 0:37:53"I'll put them on a small stage at the Isle of Wight

0:37:53 > 0:37:54"cos I like their approach."

0:37:54 > 0:37:56If you have a song but you're not quite festival ready,

0:37:56 > 0:37:59you could try another route in.

0:38:00 > 0:38:04'Tonight is the tenth birthday of BBC Music Introducing.'

0:38:07 > 0:38:09There are so many different artists now who all

0:38:09 > 0:38:12have their roots in BBC Introducing.

0:38:12 > 0:38:1410 years, so much has come though it and it's such a...

0:38:14 > 0:38:17You know, the roots of it are in such a positive place.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20# It don't matter now Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo

0:38:20 > 0:38:23# Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo. #

0:38:23 > 0:38:26What BBC Introducing do it in a very conceptional or

0:38:26 > 0:38:31perceptional kind of way is highlights particular artists

0:38:31 > 0:38:37and they almost grant them legitimacy of being a new band in the public consciousness.

0:38:37 > 0:38:38Blossoms is a good example.

0:38:38 > 0:38:42# And the river always flows So if you go I will know

0:38:42 > 0:38:45# By the way, my Charlemagne. #

0:38:45 > 0:38:47Blossoms have gone from uploading in 2013 to playing

0:38:47 > 0:38:51South by Southwest, Glastonbury and the Reading Festival

0:38:51 > 0:38:53to a Mercury Music nomination this year.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57We've been to a few, like, ceremonies, like the Mercurys,

0:38:57 > 0:38:59free drink and everyone taking photos of you.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01It's kind of like, it's a bit mad.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04Whereas someone like Stormzy pulls it off and looks really cool,

0:39:04 > 0:39:07you know, we still look like we're on a school trip.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10# And the river always flows So if you go I will know

0:39:10 > 0:39:13# By the way, my Charlemagne. #

0:39:13 > 0:39:15Charlemagne, Blown Rose,

0:39:15 > 0:39:18two of the greatest pop tracks of the last you know, 18 months.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22They deserve every plaudit that they get.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25And they deserve that nomination as well.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28CROWD CHEERS

0:39:28 > 0:39:30# Sorry, I'm not. #

0:39:30 > 0:39:34Another new band from the BBC Introducing stable,

0:39:34 > 0:39:38The Big Moon, also achieved a Mercury nomination this year.

0:39:38 > 0:39:44The whole Mercury nom thing was an absolute bolt from the blue.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47These people on the panel have, like, listened to our album

0:39:47 > 0:39:53in the same, you know, sitting as Ed Sheeran and The xx and Stormzy.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56# I've been waiting for a girl like you. #

0:39:56 > 0:40:01These are the kind of things the really dream of when you start a band

0:40:01 > 0:40:03or, you know, when you're learning to play the guitar.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06You think, "Maybe one day I'll be in a band. Maybe I'll be a rock star."

0:40:06 > 0:40:10- Yeah. - "Maybe I'll be Mercury nominated!"

0:40:10 > 0:40:13CROWD CHEERS

0:40:13 > 0:40:15Excellent advice.

0:40:15 > 0:40:19Now, our next word is for the BBC Introducing Artist of The Year.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22Catfish and the Bottlemen, Jack Garratt and Izzy Bizu

0:40:22 > 0:40:24have all been awarded the Golden Mic.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27But this year's winner is a 19-year-old indie wonder -

0:40:27 > 0:40:29Declan McKenna. And here's why.

0:40:35 > 0:40:38No way!

0:40:38 > 0:40:44Oh, my God! Look at that! That is... That is so shiny!

0:40:46 > 0:40:49Our BBC Music Introducing Artist of The Year, Declan McKenna,

0:40:49 > 0:40:53first uploaded to his local radio, Beds, Herts and Bucks

0:40:53 > 0:40:56and then Radio 1 beckoned.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59I was 15, maybe, when I first sent in the tune

0:40:59 > 0:41:02and I think 16 when it first got played.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05# I heard he lives down a river somewhere. #

0:41:05 > 0:41:07But it's like, Radio 1, when you're first starting out, especially

0:41:07 > 0:41:09when you're like, 15, 16, whatever it was,

0:41:09 > 0:41:12it just seems like an untouchable thing.

0:41:12 > 0:41:16# Talks like an angel but he looks like me. #

0:41:16 > 0:41:20Phil Taggart played it first and then, like, that was kind of the initial thing,

0:41:20 > 0:41:22I was like, "Wow," Radio 1 is such a massive thing

0:41:22 > 0:41:25and it's all sort of connected from this one little starting point.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28It was just the best pop song that I'd heard from any artist,

0:41:28 > 0:41:30young or old, in quite a while. When you get that interaction

0:41:30 > 0:41:33from one song, one play, at night-time on the radio,

0:41:33 > 0:41:36it's obviously going to be the start of a big thing.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38After being picked up by BBC Introducing, it was Declan's

0:41:38 > 0:41:42lyrics about corruption in football, police brutality and transgender

0:41:42 > 0:41:47teens that saw the Evening Standard dub him "the voice of a generation".

0:41:47 > 0:41:50# He's got eyes but he can't see

0:41:50 > 0:41:54# He talks like an angel but he looks like me. #

0:41:54 > 0:41:57What 15-year-old does that?

0:41:57 > 0:42:02Like, it's obviously someone who's like a really, really deep thinker.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04- PRESENTER:- Well, Declan's with us now and I was looking on your

0:42:04 > 0:42:07Twitter site today and you've got the slogan up there,

0:42:07 > 0:42:09"Sepp Blatter don't matter".

0:42:09 > 0:42:14- Yeah! I'm always changing that. - How do you feel now that he's gone?

0:42:14 > 0:42:18Erm, it's a good thing, I guess.

0:42:18 > 0:42:22'Something that may be a passing statement from you becomes like a big headline'

0:42:22 > 0:42:24and it's, like, sensationalised.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26Or, you know, writing about observing the world

0:42:26 > 0:42:29becomes like, "the voice of a generation".

0:42:29 > 0:42:32# You don't have the right to choose. #

0:42:32 > 0:42:35From Maida Vale, Declan went stateside

0:42:35 > 0:42:38and topped it off with an appearance on Later with Jools Holland.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Now, from Hertfordshire, we welcome Declan McKenna!

0:42:41 > 0:42:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:46 > 0:42:48With Jools Holland, it was like, "I watch this every week!"

0:42:48 > 0:42:51And it's like, I know the crack, I know what it is and to me

0:42:51 > 0:42:56that is like just the biggest deal of all of the big deals

0:42:56 > 0:42:58that there has been!

0:42:58 > 0:43:00# If you can't walk and then run

0:43:02 > 0:43:06# If you can't walk then run. #

0:43:06 > 0:43:09So, I was like, I can't just go on Jools Holland and play a song.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12I had to do something, kind of like flung off my shirt

0:43:12 > 0:43:15and did, like, "Give 17-year-olds the vote".

0:43:15 > 0:43:17# Run, run. #

0:43:19 > 0:43:21If you're a teenager and you're seeing somebody doing that

0:43:21 > 0:43:24while you're watching TV with your parents,

0:43:24 > 0:43:26you're going to be like, "Right, I'm going to follow you into the sun."

0:43:26 > 0:43:30If people care about what I have to say, then that's, like, that's nice.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32I don't know, I'm just writing tunes.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37Thank you to everyone for the support.

0:43:37 > 0:43:40And all of the love and all that.

0:43:42 > 0:43:46I'm just happy to be here let alone, I don't know!

0:43:46 > 0:43:50Being, erm, picked out as someone that people like.

0:43:52 > 0:43:55The last award is for the BBC Music Artist of The Year.

0:43:55 > 0:43:59Previous years have seen Adele and Ed Sheeran take the prize.

0:43:59 > 0:44:03But who will lift our Golden Mic high in the air tonight?

0:44:03 > 0:44:05Now, there are some big contenders,

0:44:05 > 0:44:08so it's going to be a difficult one to choose.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10So, let's take a look at the short list.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15- # Be humble, sit down - Hol' up, hol'up, hol' up, hol' up

0:44:15 > 0:44:17- # Be humble - Hol' up, hol'up. #

0:44:17 > 0:44:22# Cos honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go. #

0:44:22 > 0:44:25# Boy, I just leave him, 'ey I been cold the whole season, 'ey

0:44:25 > 0:44:28# I should call my next song Freezin', cold. #

0:44:29 > 0:44:33# I promise I promise to take you

0:44:33 > 0:44:36# Take you as you are. #

0:44:38 > 0:44:43# Just stop your crying It's a sign of the times. #

0:44:44 > 0:44:49# Over the castle on the hill. #

0:44:51 > 0:44:54# Nobody pray for me Even a day for me

0:44:54 > 0:44:56King Kendrick Lamar.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58- # Be humble, sit down - Hol' up, hol'up. #

0:44:58 > 0:45:00At a time where it's very,

0:45:00 > 0:45:04very hard for you to talk about anything remotely political or anything about

0:45:04 > 0:45:07identity without you completely being pulled to shreds on social media...

0:45:07 > 0:45:11- # Be humble, sit down - Hol' up, hol'up, hol' up. #

0:45:11 > 0:45:14..Kendrick's managed it and I think he's managed to do it

0:45:14 > 0:45:15because he's speaking from his heart.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18# Loyalty, loyalty, loyalty. #

0:45:18 > 0:45:21He's political, he gets the message across, he's engaging,

0:45:21 > 0:45:24he's informative and I think definitely the most important voice

0:45:24 > 0:45:28and definitely the most important lyricist of this generation.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38Absolutely love Lorde, I think she's an amazing character.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41She's come back with this album and, you know, there's just so many

0:45:41 > 0:45:45wonderful songs on there, Liability, just such a gorgeous, gorgeous song.

0:45:45 > 0:45:47# I'm a liability. #

0:45:47 > 0:45:52And then, like, Green Light was so contrasting, so it had so much joy to it.

0:45:52 > 0:45:57# Cos, honey, I'll come get my things but I can't let go

0:45:57 > 0:45:59# I'm waiting for it That green light, I want it. #

0:45:59 > 0:46:02Lorde is one of the only pop stars I can think of that

0:46:02 > 0:46:06I actually believe. I don't feel like she has been put through some sort of a A&R mill.

0:46:06 > 0:46:09If you look at somebody like Lorde, who's, like, come up through Tumblr,

0:46:09 > 0:46:13they're part of that kind of collaging culture online and

0:46:13 > 0:46:19they understand the power of image and how it spreads among young people.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22She experiments musically and visually really, really well.

0:46:22 > 0:46:26# I'm waiting for it That green light, I want it. #

0:46:27 > 0:46:30CHEERING

0:46:30 > 0:46:32Stormzy is one of the artists of the year, undoubtedly.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35You can't talk about grime in 2017 without talking about Stormzy.

0:46:39 > 0:46:43# All right, first things first I've been putting in the work

0:46:43 > 0:46:45- # I'm a rebel with a cause - With a cause. #

0:46:45 > 0:46:48Possibly one of the, if not THE biggest breakthrough success

0:46:48 > 0:46:50story of any British artist this year.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53# But I still get to gunning Don't be running when I bang mine

0:46:53 > 0:46:55# Before we said our prayers There was gang signs

0:46:55 > 0:46:58# Gang signs. #

0:46:58 > 0:47:00He's not only captured the zeitgeist

0:47:00 > 0:47:02but he's also been able to push through the culture.

0:47:02 > 0:47:05# I'm blinded by your grace. #

0:47:05 > 0:47:06This album, Gang Signs & Prayer,

0:47:06 > 0:47:09there was gospel on it, there was R&B on it,

0:47:09 > 0:47:12Stormzy was singing on it, he had songs about his mum on it.

0:47:12 > 0:47:15I was like, "This is great!"

0:47:15 > 0:47:19# I'm blinded by your grace

0:47:19 > 0:47:21# You came and saved me. #

0:47:21 > 0:47:25The fact that he's had these moments at Glastonbury.

0:47:25 > 0:47:28The fact that he's had the sales of the record that he's had,

0:47:28 > 0:47:32has been because he's been firmly in control.

0:47:32 > 0:47:34He obviously has such integrity as well.

0:47:34 > 0:47:37Just talking about mental health issues, his involvement with Grenfell.

0:47:37 > 0:47:38# That's for every last soul up in Grenfell

0:47:38 > 0:47:40# Even though I've never even met you

0:47:40 > 0:47:42# That could have been my mum's house. #

0:47:42 > 0:47:44He is without doubt one of the artists of the year.

0:47:44 > 0:47:46# Shut up. #

0:47:46 > 0:47:50Stormzy just has this presidential sort of charm about him.

0:47:50 > 0:47:52- # Why? - Cos I ain't won a MOBO before

0:47:52 > 0:47:53# What? #

0:47:53 > 0:47:57I'm 48, I've got kids, I shouldn't be sitting in my front room

0:47:57 > 0:48:01calling up YouTube on my telly, watching the video to Shut Up.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04Because I just like looking at him.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07He has got this charm and magnetism

0:48:07 > 0:48:11and sort of spirit that's infectious and you can't not watch him.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13# Dem man still go halves on a quarter

0:48:13 > 0:48:15# See me turn from a prince to a pauper

0:48:15 > 0:48:18# Two cigarettes and a bottle of water. #

0:48:18 > 0:48:20Everything about his music and about his patter is just,

0:48:20 > 0:48:22just super charismatic.

0:48:25 > 0:48:27THEY LAUGH

0:48:29 > 0:48:33# When I heard that sound

0:48:33 > 0:48:37# When the walls came down

0:48:37 > 0:48:41I was thinking about you About you. #

0:48:42 > 0:48:45The music scene in 2017, I think, has been very exciting,

0:48:45 > 0:48:48because I think we've seen a lot of new acts break through.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51# You raised the lights when it was frightening. #

0:48:52 > 0:48:54With Rag'n'Bone Man,

0:48:54 > 0:48:57it's taken him a long time to become this overnight sensation.

0:48:57 > 0:49:01# If you lay here in these arms tonight I promise

0:49:01 > 0:49:06# I promise to take you Take you as you are. #

0:49:06 > 0:49:09It's really hard for an artist, I think, to kind of come

0:49:09 > 0:49:12from the corner of the musical world where he has come from,

0:49:12 > 0:49:16you know, the tradition of British hip-hop, the tradition of British

0:49:16 > 0:49:19soul, to be able to have something that is universally accepted.

0:49:19 > 0:49:24# I'm only human after all Don't put the blame on me

0:49:25 > 0:49:28# Don't put the blame on me. #

0:49:28 > 0:49:30It just feels like there's a real gravitas to him,

0:49:30 > 0:49:34there's a real depth. You know his musical influences, you know it's really, really heartfelt.

0:49:34 > 0:49:37And there is just such substance to him.

0:49:37 > 0:49:39The bottom line is that voice.

0:49:39 > 0:49:42You know, when he opens his mouth and that voice comes out,

0:49:42 > 0:49:46it takes you by surprise. And it's just so gorgeous.

0:49:48 > 0:49:51# Oh. #

0:49:56 > 0:49:59I think you might think that an artist like Harry Styles

0:49:59 > 0:50:02could have it easy because he was part of one of the biggest

0:50:02 > 0:50:06boybands EVER but that also can be quite a hard thing to do

0:50:06 > 0:50:09because I think everyone is waiting on that debut album

0:50:09 > 0:50:13and everyone will be ready to tear it apart as well.

0:50:13 > 0:50:17# Just stop your crying It's a sign of the times. #

0:50:17 > 0:50:20The fact that he went and got Jeff Bhasker, who, as a producer

0:50:20 > 0:50:25and a co-writer, pretty much can do anything and make it sound amazing,

0:50:25 > 0:50:29and taking down a route where he's using Pink Floyd-esque

0:50:29 > 0:50:33influences, I think that was a massive risk

0:50:33 > 0:50:35but it's a risk that I think has really paid off.

0:50:35 > 0:50:39# We don't say what we really mean... #

0:50:39 > 0:50:41CROWD CHEERS

0:50:41 > 0:50:46# We're not who we used to be We're not who we used to be... #

0:50:46 > 0:50:49It's the kind of classic template of former boyband star

0:50:49 > 0:50:52grows up a bit

0:50:52 > 0:50:55and it's finally time to impart some of their hard-won wisdom

0:50:55 > 0:50:57in a mid-paced pop song.

0:50:57 > 0:51:03# Just trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat. #

0:51:03 > 0:51:06He made a record that he loved and I think that was really important

0:51:06 > 0:51:09and I think the start to a really, you know, great solo career.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14I definitely don't think you could argue if Ed Sheeran was

0:51:14 > 0:51:16made artist of the year.

0:51:16 > 0:51:19You know, he's had the biggest album, he clogged the singles chart,

0:51:19 > 0:51:22the Official Charts Company had to literally change the rules

0:51:22 > 0:51:26of how the singles chart worked because he flooded it so badly.

0:51:26 > 0:51:27# I was younger then... #

0:51:27 > 0:51:29He's done songwriting for so many other artists, he's had

0:51:29 > 0:51:32one of the biggest tours, his peers really, really respect him.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34# I'm on my way... #

0:51:34 > 0:51:36The Guardian, I think wrote a story, saying,

0:51:36 > 0:51:40"Do you think Ed Sheeran's boring?" The general public voted.

0:51:40 > 0:51:43It's weird to say this about the biggest artist in the world

0:51:43 > 0:51:46right now but I think Ed Sheeran kind of gets a hard time!

0:51:46 > 0:51:49Love him, hate him, the thing that makes Ed Sheeran special

0:51:49 > 0:51:52is his ability to write something that just hits you there.

0:51:53 > 0:51:56# 15 years old and smoking... #

0:51:56 > 0:51:59I think he's all right, I think he's obviously talented, you know what I mean?

0:51:59 > 0:52:02But ...I certainly wouldn't put a poster of him up on

0:52:02 > 0:52:05my wall, you know what I mean, if I was a young kid, you know what I mean?

0:52:05 > 0:52:08He's a bit... He's called Ed, innit?

0:52:08 > 0:52:09- CROWD:- # I'm on my way! #

0:52:09 > 0:52:12He's easy to dismiss but you can't dismiss someone who plays

0:52:12 > 0:52:15to 240,000 people on his own.

0:52:15 > 0:52:17Sing it out!

0:52:17 > 0:52:21# When we did not know the answers and I miss the way. #

0:52:21 > 0:52:26He took over Glastonbury, that got such a mixed reaction, I thought that was so unfair on Ed.

0:52:26 > 0:52:29Because if any one of us was to imagine yourself walking out

0:52:29 > 0:52:32onto that Pyramid Stage, with your songs and holding your own,

0:52:32 > 0:52:35you know, how terrifying must that have been?

0:52:35 > 0:52:38But he nailed it!

0:52:38 > 0:52:42# I'm on my way Driving at 19. #

0:52:42 > 0:52:46What I like about Ed Sheeran, amongst other things,

0:52:46 > 0:52:48is that he said yes to the Glastonbury gig.

0:52:48 > 0:52:52There's a kind of arrogance, there's a kind of rock solid core of self belief there.

0:52:52 > 0:52:54He knew he could go a festival where most of the people

0:52:54 > 0:52:56there probably didn't think he was very cool

0:52:56 > 0:52:59and he just has this weird kind of magnetism, which,

0:52:59 > 0:53:03I don't how you do it, maybe he doesn't know how he does it either.

0:53:03 > 0:53:07# Over the castle on the hill. #

0:53:07 > 0:53:09CHEERING

0:53:09 > 0:53:14So much talent in so many genres, from pop to soul to grime.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17But who did our judges think stood out?

0:53:17 > 0:53:21Now, 2017's Artist of The Year started mosh pits at Glastonbury,

0:53:21 > 0:53:23collaborated with Little Mix and gave us

0:53:23 > 0:53:25everything from grime to gospel.

0:53:25 > 0:53:28The BBC Music Artist of The Year is,

0:53:28 > 0:53:30- we say it together...- Of course.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33- BOTH:- Stormzy!

0:53:41 > 0:53:44The statement I wanted to make and the whole message was to embody

0:53:44 > 0:53:48myself, like, Michael, this man/kid

0:53:48 > 0:53:51who's grown up in South London

0:53:51 > 0:53:54and grown up on the streets but has also grown up in the church

0:53:54 > 0:53:57and also grown up as an academic

0:53:57 > 0:53:59and to embody that all into one album.

0:53:59 > 0:54:01# Shut your mouth, you ain't squeezin'

0:54:01 > 0:54:04# Little boy, I just leave him I been cold a whole season

0:54:04 > 0:54:07# I should call my next song Freezin', cold. #

0:54:07 > 0:54:10It happened and it was like, "Oh, this is mad!"

0:54:14 > 0:54:17# Them man are selective bad boys

0:54:17 > 0:54:20# Some We just wanna be accepted bad boys. #

0:54:20 > 0:54:23If you gave someone Gang Signs & Prayer, the album,

0:54:23 > 0:54:25and said, "This is grime," they're going to hear

0:54:25 > 0:54:29Cold and Big For Your Boots and Return of the Rucksack,

0:54:29 > 0:54:31and understand, "OK, there's the grime element."

0:54:31 > 0:54:36It's going to confuse them a bit when they hear Blinded By Your Grace.

0:54:36 > 0:54:37# I'm blinded by your grace

0:54:39 > 0:54:43# I'm blinded by your grace By your grace. #

0:54:43 > 0:54:45'But then, it's also a gateway,

0:54:45 > 0:54:48'in the sense of getting people to listen to artists like myself

0:54:48 > 0:54:51'and understand that grime artists aren't just this one thing.'

0:54:51 > 0:54:53There's a whole different dynamic to it.

0:54:53 > 0:54:56# But oh, my God What a God I serve

0:54:56 > 0:54:58# Lord, I've been broken

0:54:58 > 0:55:02# Although I'm not worthy. #

0:55:02 > 0:55:07I poured out every last...bit of soul, emotion,

0:55:07 > 0:55:11creativity, idea,

0:55:11 > 0:55:16every last bit of it was done and it was embodied in that cover,

0:55:16 > 0:55:21in the artwork, in the album booklet, everything and we done it.

0:55:21 > 0:55:24# But I still get to gunning Don't be running when I bang mine

0:55:24 > 0:55:26# Before we said our prayers There was gang signs.

0:55:26 > 0:55:29# Gang signs, gang signs, gang signs... #

0:55:29 > 0:55:32My name is Stormzy. This is Glastonbury.

0:55:32 > 0:55:34This is history in the making.

0:55:35 > 0:55:39With Glastonbury, I didn't even understand the capacity of what I was doing.

0:55:39 > 0:55:44# Where do you know me from W-where do you know me from? #

0:55:44 > 0:55:46The mosh pits moment, yeah, man.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49I done 100 Bags and my mum came up on the screen and...

0:55:49 > 0:55:52All right, Mummy, look at your boy now, man!

0:55:52 > 0:55:54You raise me up, you taught me everything I need to know and you

0:55:54 > 0:55:58literally bared all to do that as in, like, you gave me everything and, like,

0:55:58 > 0:56:00you was kind of knackered after it and then

0:56:00 > 0:56:03I went into the world and I said, "OK, cool, let's figure it out," and

0:56:03 > 0:56:07I figured it out and I brought it back, and I said, "Yo, Mum, like, get up now.

0:56:07 > 0:56:09"Don't be tired. We're good."

0:56:11 > 0:56:13# Hey, no more broken promises, I swear. #

0:56:13 > 0:56:15Do you know what I mean?

0:56:15 > 0:56:17Same way I put everything into this album,

0:56:17 > 0:56:20she put everything into me and then I was able to do all of this, so...

0:56:20 > 0:56:21Yeah, it's all good now.

0:56:23 > 0:56:26One of the lines on the new album talks about you dealing with

0:56:26 > 0:56:29depression. Can you talk about what you were going through then,

0:56:29 > 0:56:32- when you wear depressed? - For me, it was like,

0:56:32 > 0:56:37a realisation of how fragile we are as humans.

0:56:37 > 0:56:40If there's anyone out there going through it, I think

0:56:40 > 0:56:43for them to see that I went through it would help.

0:56:43 > 0:56:48# Yeah, I don't know where to begin so I'll start by saying I refuse to forget you. #

0:56:48 > 0:56:51I've always known that I have like a duty in my heart to always

0:56:51 > 0:56:55make sure that I'm aware of the things I'm talking about

0:56:55 > 0:56:59and using my voice for the right reasons, at the right time.

0:56:59 > 0:57:01# That could have been me up there. #

0:57:01 > 0:57:05It's not just about me, "Yeah, I'm Stormzy, and, yeah, this is what I do."

0:57:05 > 0:57:10But to say, "Hang on, that's going on there, or that person needs my help."

0:57:10 > 0:57:12And it's not even like some superhero thing of like,

0:57:12 > 0:57:15"Yeah, hey, it's me to save the day again." It's not about that.

0:57:15 > 0:57:18It's just about, well, you know what?

0:57:18 > 0:57:21I can say that to 1 million people right now on Twitter

0:57:21 > 0:57:24and show the world that, no, that's not right.

0:57:26 > 0:57:30I feel like now when I do things, people see it and they know that's my truth.

0:57:30 > 0:57:32Stormzy's going to go on X Factor

0:57:32 > 0:57:34and it's going to be a mad moment for him and he's going to love it!

0:57:34 > 0:57:38- That's my truth. So, even things like Love Island.- Oh!

0:57:41 > 0:57:43Oh, my days.

0:57:43 > 0:57:45I don't know what the future holds for me

0:57:45 > 0:57:47but I'm definitely ready for it.

0:57:47 > 0:57:50I've just got to thank my whole team, the Mercury team.

0:57:50 > 0:57:55Erm, Fraser T Smith, who helped me make an incredible album

0:57:55 > 0:58:02and, yeah, I'm actually blessed to be able to say that I'm

0:58:02 > 0:58:06an artist who has...gained enough...

0:58:06 > 0:58:09I don't even know what the word is, like,

0:58:09 > 0:58:13I've gained enough clout, is the word clout, can you say that?

0:58:13 > 0:58:16Are you allowed to say that? But, yeah, man, I've...

0:58:16 > 0:58:20I've managed to be regarded as someone who is

0:58:20 > 0:58:23worthy of this award. Yes!

0:58:23 > 0:58:26Thank you, guys. Love.

0:58:26 > 0:58:29Stormzy's win is so well-deserved, he's really had such an amazing

0:58:29 > 0:58:32year and we are sure that 2018 is going to be even better for him.

0:58:32 > 0:58:36A hugely talented artist and he completely loves his mum.

0:58:36 > 0:58:39- Auntie Abigail.- Hello, Abigail. Huge congratulations to Stormzy.

0:58:39 > 0:58:42So, that's it. Some of 2017's highlights.

0:58:42 > 0:58:46Well done to all our winners. Here's to more amazing music in 2018.

0:58:46 > 0:58:50- And thank you all so much for watching.- Thank you, goodbye.- Bye.
