0:13:32 > 0:13:35CHEERING

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Miss Beverley Knight with The Cross.

0:13:46 > 0:13:51I thank you for that beautiful reminder of the late, great Prince.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53CHEERING

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Now, I've fond memories of Christmas in South Wales

0:13:58 > 0:14:02as a boy, and my gospel journey began not just at home,

0:14:02 > 0:14:07listening to music on the radio, but it also began in my local chapel.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27Wow.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30I haven't been in here for a long time.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32The Park Chapel. Wonderful.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41Phew.

0:14:41 > 0:14:46The thing I remember most of all was Sunday school. 2:30pm.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49And we were always reminded of it,

0:14:49 > 0:14:54because the preacher would say, "Sunday school starts at 2:30pm."

0:14:57 > 0:14:59We were always late.

0:14:59 > 0:15:04And he used to say, "Better late than never, but better never late."

0:15:12 > 0:15:14"A faithful member of this church."

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Well, this is dedicated to Mrs Rogers,

0:15:18 > 0:15:23who was my Sunday school teacher, and she lived next door.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25So you couldn't really... HE LAUGHS

0:15:25 > 0:15:28..you couldn't really get out of not coming to...

0:15:29 > 0:15:31..to Sunday school, because she would always check

0:15:31 > 0:15:34to make sure that I was going.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38So it's lovely that this is dedicated to her.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45When I was a child,

0:15:45 > 0:15:52the only time that I heard singers sing in public was here.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55You know, that's when we all got together and we sang.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59Here, in this room, with long notes being played on the organ,

0:15:59 > 0:16:01that seemed a little scary to me.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07# Mm

0:16:07 > 0:16:09# Come on, children, let's sing... #

0:16:09 > 0:16:14But when I heard American gospel music, it didn't seem scary.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17It lifted me up. It made me feel excited.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20# Come on, children, let's sing Yeah

0:16:20 > 0:16:22# About the goodness of the lord... #

0:16:22 > 0:16:26I was mischievous, I suppose, when I was a kid.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30I was tempted many times to sing it

0:16:30 > 0:16:35like I could hear black gospel singers sing.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I saw her.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42She was singing like a rock and roll singer,

0:16:42 > 0:16:46playing an electric guitar and singing gospel songs.

0:16:46 > 0:16:51You know, which was even more than I had heard as a child.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54# Didn't it rain, children? #

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- CHEERING - # Rain, oh, yes... #

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Holy roller, you know? She rocked it up.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02# You know it did, didn't it?

0:17:02 > 0:17:05# Oh, yes How it rained... #

0:17:05 > 0:17:08This was a big part of my upbringing.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11- # I want to know - I don't know

0:17:11 > 0:17:12# Baby, I got to know... #

0:17:12 > 0:17:15So that's how I developed my style.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18You know, my singing and projection

0:17:18 > 0:17:22came from this chapel,

0:17:22 > 0:17:26and then later on, clubs and pubs and dance halls, you know?

0:17:26 > 0:17:29But it originally started here.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34CHEERING

0:17:34 > 0:17:36Now, Tom.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39You know I'm not coming to Wales for Christmas without sampling

0:17:39 > 0:17:41- something really tasty.- Right.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45Now, in Caribbean households, we have black cake.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46It's like a fruitcake,

0:17:46 > 0:17:52- but it's really treacly and it's really heavy, and it's amazing.- Wow.

0:17:52 > 0:17:57Well, what we always had was a Christmas cake made by my mother.

0:17:57 > 0:18:02Now, whilst Bev and I swap cake recipes, please take in the joyful

0:18:02 > 0:18:06sounds of a young man whose voice is like no other.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Here's Kwabs.

0:18:09 > 0:18:10CHEERING

0:18:22 > 0:18:27# Think about it There must be higher love

0:18:29 > 0:18:34# Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above

0:18:34 > 0:18:38# Without it, time is wasted time

0:18:39 > 0:18:46# Look inside your heart I'll look inside mine

0:18:46 > 0:18:49# Things look so bad everywhere

0:18:51 > 0:18:55# In this whole world, what is fair?

0:29:51 > 0:29:53CHEERING

0:30:06 > 0:30:09Cardiff is one of the most diverse places in the UK.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12Migration here happened really early in this area -

0:30:12 > 0:30:15we're talking about the early 1900s.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18A lot of the Somalian and Caribbean sailors thought,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21"This is my chance of a new life."

0:30:21 > 0:30:23They also brought their worship with them.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26People longed for a place that they could call, you know,

0:30:26 > 0:30:29their place, a place that they could call their church.

0:30:32 > 0:30:33Who's that by your mum?

0:30:33 > 0:30:35The one standing.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37I'm the one going like that.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39LAUGHTER

0:30:39 > 0:30:43- Look at those cheeks!- Those were the good old days.- Three sisters.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46The music comes from there.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48That feeling that sort of fetches out in you,

0:30:48 > 0:30:50makes you want to clap and sing.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02What's kept the culture in Cardiff was the church, where people

0:31:02 > 0:31:05got together of different cultures and everything else.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08From that footage, what you see there, that's how it started off.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11The song, Redeemed, I remember that as a child.

0:31:11 > 0:31:15And I remember learning to play guitar to it and, you know,

0:31:15 > 0:31:18it just becomes an anchor.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20A lot of our church choruses, especially back in the '60s,

0:31:20 > 0:31:23were like four liners and repeated and repeated.

0:31:23 > 0:31:27And you actually sense the energy lift.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30You know, you just get these songs and they just say it, you know?

0:31:30 > 0:31:31"I am redeemed."

0:31:31 > 0:31:33ALL: # Redeem

0:31:33 > 0:31:36# For thy debt I could not bear

0:31:36 > 0:31:37# Redeem

0:31:37 > 0:31:39# Hallelujah

0:31:39 > 0:31:42# Redeem. #

0:31:42 > 0:31:44Oh, how was that?!

0:31:49 > 0:31:55Now, back in 1979, Bob Dylan released Slow Train Coming,

0:31:55 > 0:32:00an album of songs about his new-found faith.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04It was an album about belief and how to keep it.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07Now, here's a song from it that really means a lot to me.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30# They asked me how I feel

0:32:30 > 0:32:33# And if my love is real

0:32:34 > 0:32:39# How I know I'll make it through

0:32:40 > 0:32:45# They, they look at me and frown

0:32:45 > 0:32:50# They'd like to drive me from this town

0:32:50 > 0:32:53# They don't want me around

0:32:53 > 0:32:57# Cos I believe in you

0:33:01 > 0:33:05# They show me to the door

0:33:05 > 0:33:09# They say, "Don't come back no more"

0:33:09 > 0:33:14# Cos I don't be like they'd like me to

0:33:16 > 0:33:21# And I, I walk out on my own

0:33:21 > 0:33:25# A thousand miles from home

0:33:25 > 0:33:29# But I don't feel alone

0:33:29 > 0:33:33# Cos I believe in you

0:33:36 > 0:33:38# I believe in you

0:33:38 > 0:33:42# Through tears and the laughter

0:33:43 > 0:33:45# I believe in you

0:33:45 > 0:33:49# Even though we're far apart

0:33:49 > 0:33:52# And I believe in you

0:33:52 > 0:33:55# Even on the morning after

0:33:56 > 0:34:00# Oh, when the dawn is nearing

0:34:00 > 0:34:04# Oh, when the night is disappearing

0:34:04 > 0:34:10# Oh, this feeling's still here in my heart

0:34:10 > 0:34:15# Don't let me drift too far

0:34:15 > 0:34:19# Keep me where you are

0:34:19 > 0:34:22# Where I will always be

0:34:22 > 0:34:24# Renewed

0:34:25 > 0:34:30# And that which you've given me today

0:34:30 > 0:34:34# Is worth more than I could pay

0:34:34 > 0:34:37# And no matter what they say

0:34:39 > 0:34:41# I believe in you

0:34:45 > 0:34:47# I believe in you

0:34:47 > 0:34:52# When winter turns to summer

0:34:52 > 0:34:54# And I believe in you

0:34:54 > 0:34:59# When white turns to black

0:34:59 > 0:35:06# And I believe in you even though I be outnumbered

0:35:06 > 0:35:09# Oh, though the earth may shake me

0:35:09 > 0:35:13# Oh, and my friends forsake me

0:35:13 > 0:35:18# Oh, even that wouldn't make me go back

0:35:20 > 0:35:25# Don't let me change my heart

0:35:25 > 0:35:28# Keep me set apart

0:35:28 > 0:35:33# From all the plans they do pursue

0:35:35 > 0:35:39# And I, I don't mind the pain

0:35:39 > 0:35:43# I don't mind the driving rain

0:35:43 > 0:35:46# I know I will sustain

0:35:48 > 0:35:51# Cos I believe in you

0:36:05 > 0:36:10# I believe in you. #

0:36:10 > 0:36:14CHEERING

0:36:27 > 0:36:31Now, I want to sing a number by a group whose foundations were

0:36:31 > 0:36:33steeped in gospel.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36Led by their father, the mighty Pops,

0:36:36 > 0:36:39and featuring the great Mavis Staples who's just

0:36:39 > 0:36:41been on tour with Bob Dylan,

0:39:17 > 0:39:19CHEERING

0:39:29 > 0:39:31Ms Beverley Knight.

0:39:32 > 0:39:37Now, Wales has always been spiritual, not just in voice,

0:39:37 > 0:39:39but in words, too,

0:39:39 > 0:39:41and one of our famous authors,

0:39:41 > 0:39:44Dylan Thomas, wrote the wonderful

0:39:44 > 0:39:47A Child's Christmas In Wales.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49And I love this bit from the tale,

0:39:49 > 0:39:52so indulge me, just for a little while, OK?

0:39:55 > 0:39:57Always, on Christmas night, there was music.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00An uncle played the fiddle,

0:40:00 > 0:40:03a cousin sang Cherry Ripe,

0:40:03 > 0:40:06another uncle sang Drake's Drum.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08It was very warm in that little house.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Auntie Hannah, who had got into the parsnip wine,

0:40:13 > 0:40:16sang a song about bleeding hearts and death,

0:40:16 > 0:40:18and then another in which she said her heart,

0:40:18 > 0:40:20"Was like a bird's nest."

0:40:22 > 0:40:26And then everybody laughed again and then I went to bed.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29LAUGHTER

0:40:29 > 0:40:32Looking through my bedroom window out into the moonlight

0:40:32 > 0:40:36and the unending snow,

0:40:36 > 0:40:38I could see the lights in the windows

0:40:38 > 0:40:42of all the other houses on the hill and hear the music rising

0:40:42 > 0:40:47from them up the long, steady falling night.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50I turned the gas down, I got into bed,

0:40:50 > 0:40:54I said some words to the close and holy darkness...
