0:01:23 > 0:01:25# You're out of luck

0:05:02 > 0:05:05# Beautiful day
0:05:09 > 0:05:11# Beautiful. #
0:05:22 > 0:05:24Abbey Road.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29APPLAUSE
0:05:43 > 0:05:45The brilliant U2, everybody.
0:06:00 > 0:06:04Now, these four unassuming Irish boys were school friends who
0:06:04 > 0:06:08embarked on a musical journey that's taken them to the very top of rock.
0:06:08 > 0:06:09I first met them about...
0:06:09 > 0:06:12Should I say, even? 20 years ago?
0:06:12 > 0:06:15- No!- It was that long. It was that long ago.
0:06:15 > 0:06:16And we've been friends ever since,
0:06:16 > 0:06:21so, I'm very pleased to say welcome to U2 At The BBC.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24CHEERING
0:06:25 > 0:06:29You guys are famous for pioneering some of the biggest shows in rock.
0:06:29 > 0:06:33You're used to performing in front of 70,000 people, I think.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36Tonight, though, you're going to squeeze that performance
0:06:36 > 0:06:38into the tiny Abbey Road Studios
0:06:38 > 0:06:42which I'm imagining is actually going to be fairly difficult.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44Or do you enjoy it?
0:06:44 > 0:06:48Well, first of all, I am actually more nervous about this
0:06:48 > 0:06:51- than getting on stage in front of 70,000 people.- Why?
0:06:51 > 0:06:56Because that 70,000-people stadium experience is something we have done
0:06:56 > 0:06:59since we were in our 20s - we've never done this before.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03We've never played our songs to a tiny, little crowd
0:07:03 > 0:07:05in a setting like this.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08So, actually, got a few jitters about it.
0:07:08 > 0:07:09So why did you choose Abbey Road?
0:07:09 > 0:07:12What was it about Abbey Road that made you...?
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Well, it's a legendary place.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17It's one of the best studios in the world,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20and I guess The Beatles anointed it that way.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23You do feel like you should take your shoes off or something.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Or do a few kind of, yeah, prayer bows or something.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29We got to know Macca a little bit
0:07:29 > 0:07:34and actually we met him in our Mecca here.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36I can't remember what album it was,
0:07:36 > 0:07:38but he came down and took us
0:07:38 > 0:07:42through what it was like and he reminded us that when they came,
0:07:42 > 0:07:43when The Beatles come to Abbey Road
0:07:43 > 0:07:45they'd to come in the tradesman's entrance.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49- No, they didn't. - Yes, because musicians were...
0:07:49 > 0:07:51They weren't scientists and they weren't...
0:07:51 > 0:07:53They were of a different caste system.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57And of course the whole thing about The Beatles was they broke through
0:07:57 > 0:07:59that and became these great producers
0:07:59 > 0:08:02as well as great songwriters and great players.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04So that all happened in here.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07You could say that this is the Big Bang of pop music,
0:08:07 > 0:08:09this... This room.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12Is that why Adam and Larry and myself went in the other entrance?
0:08:12 > 0:08:15- LAUGHTER - Is that what that's all about?
0:08:15 > 0:08:17Larry, how on earth did you choose the songs
0:08:17 > 0:08:19that you are going to perform tonight?
0:08:19 > 0:08:2214 albums to choose from, so how did you decide?
0:08:22 > 0:08:27Kind of left it to the scientist in our band, The Edge.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29It was really about...
0:08:29 > 0:08:32The choice of songs was about what would make sense for U2
0:08:32 > 0:08:34plus an orchestra.
0:08:34 > 0:08:38It is a long way from punk rock as well, it has to be said.
0:08:38 > 0:08:42And there was a sense of, "Is this too much?
0:08:42 > 0:08:44"Are we being self-indulgent here?"
0:08:44 > 0:08:48We've a choir, we've a 38-piece orchestra,
0:08:48 > 0:08:51and we felt kind of naughty
0:08:51 > 0:08:53because we've had big arrangements on A song
0:08:53 > 0:08:56but the idea of doing an entire night
0:08:56 > 0:08:59with those kinds of arrangements,
0:08:59 > 0:09:01it felt a little self-indulgent
0:09:01 > 0:09:05but we delighted in that self-indulgence.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08I was going to say, just enjoy it. We're all going to enjoy it tonight.
0:09:08 > 0:09:09Let's have a treat right now.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11What song are you going to give us next?
0:09:11 > 0:09:13Lights Of Home.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15- Watch out for this one. - It's going to be good?
0:09:15 > 0:09:17It's one of the most extraordinary things
0:09:17 > 0:09:20we've ever had the good fortune of being a part of.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23- I'm ready. Are you ready? - CHEERING
0:09:23 > 0:09:26OK, you guys go and get ready, off you go.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28CHEERING
0:09:28 > 0:09:31Next up, we have a very special performance,
0:09:31 > 0:09:33it's an exclusive from U2's brand-new album -
0:09:33 > 0:09:36this is the brilliant Lights Of Home.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40It feels really good.
0:09:40 > 0:09:41This is...
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Thank you. This is a moment...
0:09:44 > 0:09:48These songs you're about to hear are very personal.
0:09:48 > 0:09:54They're sort of letters, a lot of them, to family, friends, to places.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59And to our audience, you know, to you.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01This is Lights Of Home.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30# Knows that we're in love with defeat
0:16:30 > 0:16:35# Are we ready to be swept off our feet

0:16:39 > 0:16:43# Every breaking wave
0:16:50 > 0:16:54# Every sailor knows that the sea

0:17:52 > 0:17:56# Knows that we're in love with defeat
0:17:57 > 0:18:01# Are we ready to be swept off our feet

0:18:05 > 0:18:09# Every breaking wave
0:18:17 > 0:18:20# The sea knows where are the rocks
0:18:20 > 0:18:22# And drowning is no sin

0:18:24 > 0:18:26# The same place that yours has been
0:18:26 > 0:18:29# And we know that we fear to win
0:18:29 > 0:18:32# And so we end before we begin
0:18:32 > 0:18:34# Before we begin
0:18:34 > 0:18:39# If you go

0:18:50 > 0:18:52# Helpless against the tide
0:18:52 > 0:18:57# Baby, every dog on the street
0:18:57 > 0:19:02# Knows that we're in love with defeat
0:19:02 > 0:19:07# Are we ready to be swept off our feet
0:19:08 > 0:19:09# And stop chasing
0:19:11 > 0:19:14# Every breaking wave
0:19:20 > 0:19:26# Every breaking wave
0:19:30 > 0:19:38# Every breaking wave. #
0:19:40 > 0:19:43APPLAUSE
0:19:55 > 0:19:58Amazing stuff, guys. Thank you so much.
0:19:58 > 0:20:02Absolutely brilliant. Take a breather. Take a breather.
0:20:04 > 0:20:06For four decades you have been world leaders
0:20:06 > 0:20:09when it comes to massive arena tours.
0:20:09 > 0:20:13When you're on tour, do you actually pack your own suitcases?
0:20:15 > 0:20:16Bono does his and mine.
0:20:17 > 0:20:23I haven't changed much in that I never really pack my suitcase.
0:20:23 > 0:20:25I never really had a suitcase.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28I've been sort of sleeping on people's couches,
0:20:28 > 0:20:32and just turning up in other people's houses.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34Myself and Larry shared a room.
0:20:34 > 0:20:37He was excellent for a while - he tried to put some manners on me.
0:20:37 > 0:20:39Were you tidy, Larry?
0:20:39 > 0:20:40Did you have to keep picking up after him?
0:20:40 > 0:20:45I imagine you to be very tidy and liking things in their proper place.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47I'm not sure that I was very tidy,
0:20:47 > 0:20:50it was just clear that Bono was extremely untidy.
0:20:50 > 0:20:52LAUGHTER
0:20:52 > 0:20:55Larry, is it true that Bono would steal your underwear
0:20:55 > 0:20:57from time to time?

0:21:11 > 0:21:14I think I threw a drum-kit into the audience -
0:21:14 > 0:21:17it wasn't to do with Larry. LARRY MOUTHS
0:21:17 > 0:21:20It was more my own existential angst.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25if I ever did that again.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28Can I just correct you? You threw the drum-kit at me.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24but it was actually my dad.
0:40:24 > 0:40:27He was very anxious to get me out of the house.
0:40:27 > 0:40:29OK. He just want to get rid of you, basically.
0:40:29 > 0:40:30He just wanted me out of the house.
0:40:30 > 0:40:33I was taking up the boxroom and I was very noisy.
0:40:33 > 0:40:36I think he felt if there was a band thing I would move into
0:40:36 > 0:40:38somebody else's house.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40- Or the shed. - Or the shed, something like that.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43- And these three reprobates turned up?- Yeah, that's it.
0:40:43 > 0:40:45Was it difficult to choose them?
0:40:45 > 0:40:48Or were they the only ones that turned up?
0:40:48 > 0:40:52It was one of those great things where you think you're choosing them
0:40:52 > 0:40:56and it turns out that they actually chose you.
0:40:56 > 0:40:58And it could have been somebody else's kitchen.
0:40:58 > 0:41:01It was my kitchen that Saturday but I think they had plans for a couple
0:41:01 > 0:41:05of Saturdays along the way, there were a couple of people lined up.
0:41:05 > 0:41:08I think I made the best coffee.
0:41:08 > 0:41:10- Do you know, that's not true.- No?
0:41:10 > 0:41:13Larry definitely started the band.
0:41:13 > 0:41:16There would not have been a band without him.
0:41:16 > 0:41:20Adam was the second most ambitious person.
0:41:20 > 0:41:26He actually printed up cards with, "Manager - Adam Clayton."
0:41:26 > 0:41:29Because Edge and myself strangely enough were kind of...
0:41:29 > 0:41:31We were like, "What?
0:41:31 > 0:41:33"Yes, we would like to be in a band,
0:41:33 > 0:41:37"but, you mean, for the rest of our lives, kind of thing?"
0:41:37 > 0:41:39And I wasn't going to go to the rehearsal.
0:41:39 > 0:41:43I was just another, whatever it is, angry kid,
0:41:43 > 0:41:46and if Larry hadn't done that,
0:41:46 > 0:41:49I wouldn't be anywhere, I don't think.
0:41:49 > 0:41:50But hold on, hold on.
0:41:50 > 0:41:53There was that moment where I think you won
0:41:53 > 0:41:57a competition in Limerick and you won £500, is that correct?
0:41:57 > 0:42:00Is that the first competition you won?
0:42:00 > 0:42:03Did you think you were millionaires at the time?
0:42:03 > 0:42:04Did you think...? What did you spend it on?
0:42:04 > 0:42:09- The manager ran off with it. - Did he? Boo!
0:42:09 > 0:42:13I do remember we also got posters, which was again Adam's idea.
0:42:13 > 0:42:15And didn't your mum used to drive you around
0:42:15 > 0:42:17and you used to stick them over other people's posters?
0:42:17 > 0:42:19This is true.
0:42:19 > 0:42:21She had a Welsh accent and an orange Beetle.
0:42:21 > 0:42:25Yep, a VW Beetle and we would all jump in the back
0:42:25 > 0:42:27and when there were no police on the street,
0:42:27 > 0:42:32we'd get out and we'd have pre-made long posters which we used.
0:42:32 > 0:42:34I think wallpaper was the basis of it.
0:42:34 > 0:42:37- What did they say, The Edge? - What did they say?
0:42:37 > 0:42:39"U2 at The Baggot Inn", blah-blah-blah, whatever.
0:42:39 > 0:42:42No. "U2 can happen to anyone."
0:42:42 > 0:42:45- I see what you've done. - I still don't know what it means.
0:42:45 > 0:42:47LAUGHTER
0:42:47 > 0:42:48Another choice that you made...
0:42:48 > 0:42:50WELSH ACCENT: "The police have gone, Edge."
0:42:50 > 0:42:52Is that what she'd say?
0:42:52 > 0:42:55"OK, go, the police have gone. Get out, lads."
0:42:55 > 0:42:58She was our first roadie, Mrs The Edge.
0:42:58 > 0:42:59I love the idea of her, I love it.
0:42:59 > 0:43:01With the wallpaper paste, like...
0:43:01 > 0:43:05I remember Larry's mother also putting the drums...
0:43:05 > 0:43:09Very hard to get drums around, and then Adam's mum, Jo, arrived...
0:43:10 > 0:43:13..and she was also quite posh. And she'd smoke and just go...
0:43:13 > 0:43:16HE INHALES "When will this be over?"
0:43:17 > 0:43:19She wanted him to be a brain surgeon or something.
0:43:19 > 0:43:20Yeah, he went to posh school.
0:43:20 > 0:43:22I told her I was the manager, she liked that.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25Didn't land very well in the posh school, ended up in our school,
0:43:25 > 0:43:29nobody got expelled from our school, but he got expelled from our school.
0:43:29 > 0:43:32How did you get expelled? What did you do?
0:43:32 > 0:43:35I don't think I showed enough interest in the school system.
0:43:35 > 0:43:39One of the other ideas that you had was to have nicknames.
0:43:39 > 0:43:41The nicknames were just...
0:43:41 > 0:43:44I mean, it's probably... It's an odd thing, you know, to,
0:43:44 > 0:43:48in one sense, reject your family name
0:43:48 > 0:43:51and to be known by something else.
0:43:53 > 0:43:57But our names sometimes say a lot about you,
0:43:57 > 0:44:00the names that friends call each other.
0:44:00 > 0:44:02I mean, is he not The Edge?
0:44:02 > 0:44:03And what about Bono?
0:44:03 > 0:44:08I was originally Bono Vox.
0:44:08 > 0:44:11Yeah, and it was the name of a hearing aid shop.
0:44:11 > 0:44:13I think it means "strong voice."
0:44:13 > 0:44:16If you're in trouble with Ali, does she still call you Bono?
0:44:16 > 0:44:19What do you have written on your cup at coffee shops?
0:44:21 > 0:44:22The only person...
0:44:22 > 0:44:26Sometimes people come up and use the name Paul,
0:44:26 > 0:44:29but it makes me nervous because the only person who called me Paul
0:44:29 > 0:44:32through my life was my father.
0:44:32 > 0:44:35- When you were in trouble. - So I would be twitching.
0:44:35 > 0:44:39Ali calls me Bono and I've been Bono since I was 14.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42- So...- That's it. It's there to stay.
0:44:42 > 0:44:46But you obviously have been together for these 40 years now
0:44:46 > 0:44:50and, Larry, you're the guy who sits at the back,
0:44:50 > 0:44:55that sees these three come in front of him every time you perform.
0:44:55 > 0:44:57How have they changed over the years?
0:44:57 > 0:45:00Cos I think you're the man to ask this question to
0:45:00 > 0:45:02cos you've seen them come, you've seen them go,
0:45:02 > 0:45:04you've seen them come back, you've seen them go again.
0:45:04 > 0:45:05How have they changed?
0:45:05 > 0:45:08Which particular part of the anatomy are you talking about?
0:45:08 > 0:45:09LAUGHTER
0:45:09 > 0:45:11Cos I only...
0:45:11 > 0:45:13I only see from the back down.
0:45:13 > 0:45:16- OK.- And there have been some changes over the years.
0:45:19 > 0:45:23- I'm sure.- Not all of them good. - Fine, physically.
0:45:23 > 0:45:27- I wish I'd taken photographs over the years.- Yes.
0:45:27 > 0:45:30- Because it's quite... - Everything started much perter.
0:45:30 > 0:45:32Well, it's just...
0:45:32 > 0:45:35It's even little movements...
0:45:35 > 0:45:38- Give me an example. - Just small things like that,
0:45:38 > 0:45:42for instance, The Edge does and they're small things,
0:45:42 > 0:45:46and I noticed in the kitchen 42 years ago, he did them as well.
0:45:46 > 0:45:48- You heard a bit of it. - This is news to me.
0:45:48 > 0:45:51- I'm really interested in this. - Dun-du-dun-dun...
0:45:51 > 0:45:56He did that 42 years ago, and every time we get on stage,
0:45:56 > 0:45:57Edge plays that song.
0:45:57 > 0:45:59And it's the song...
0:45:59 > 0:46:04That basically is the one that he needs
0:46:04 > 0:46:11to get us all to understand that we are in that band.
0:46:11 > 0:46:15That really wide thing, so Edge does that for us.
0:46:16 > 0:46:17There you go.
0:46:17 > 0:46:21You didn't know that, did you? All turn round...
0:46:21 > 0:46:24But we have had to listen to "dun-du-dun-dun" quite a lot.
0:46:24 > 0:46:27Now I know... Now I will look at it differently.
0:46:27 > 0:46:29Can you tell me about your next song?
0:46:29 > 0:46:31- What are you going to play next for us?- Stuck In A Moment.
0:46:31 > 0:46:34Why are you choosing to play this song?
0:46:34 > 0:46:38Well, last month, November,
0:46:38 > 0:46:44was the 20th anniversary of the exit
0:46:44 > 0:46:46of our great friend Michael Hutchence from the planet,
0:46:46 > 0:46:48the singer of INXS.
0:46:48 > 0:46:50Extraordinary person,
0:46:50 > 0:46:56this luminous mind and beautiful soul
0:46:56 > 0:46:58and this is kind of...
0:46:58 > 0:47:02This song is like an argument with him, even though he was gone.
0:47:04 > 0:47:08It's the argument and it's the kind of argument you have
0:47:08 > 0:47:09with somebody you love.
0:47:09 > 0:47:13You're being unreasonable but you want to make a point in it.
0:47:15 > 0:47:16So, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of.
0:47:16 > 0:47:18I said that like a DJ.
0:47:18 > 0:47:20- Off you go. Go do it.- OK.
0:47:20 > 0:47:22APPLAUSE
0:47:25 > 0:47:28This is the incredible Stuck In A Moment.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35SONG: Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
0:47:44 > 0:47:46The guitar...
0:47:54 > 0:47:59# I'm not afraid of anything in this world
0:47:59 > 0:48:04# There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard
0:48:05 > 0:48:09# I'm just trying to find a decent melody
0:48:10 > 0:48:14# A song that I can sing in my own company
0:48:17 > 0:48:19# I never thought you were a fool
0:48:22 > 0:48:25# But, darling, look at you
0:48:27 > 0:48:33# You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
0:48:33 > 0:48:38# These tears are going nowhere, baby
0:48:38 > 0:48:42# You've got to get yourself together
0:48:42 > 0:48:48# You've got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:48:49 > 0:48:53# Don't say that later will be better
0:48:53 > 0:49:00# Now you're stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:49:05 > 0:49:10# I will not forsake the colours that you bring
0:49:10 > 0:49:13# But the nights you filled with fireworks
0:49:13 > 0:49:16# Did they leave you with nothing?
0:49:16 > 0:49:22# I am still enchanted by the light you brought to me
0:49:22 > 0:49:26# I still listen through your ears and through your eyes I can see
0:49:28 > 0:49:31# And you are such a fool
0:49:34 > 0:49:37# To worry like you do
0:49:37 > 0:49:38# Hey!
0:49:39 > 0:49:45# I know it's tough and you can never get enough
0:49:45 > 0:49:50# Of what you don't really need now, my, oh, my
0:49:50 > 0:49:54# You've got to get yourself together
0:49:54 > 0:50:00# You got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:50:01 > 0:50:06# Oh, lord, look at you now
0:50:06 > 0:50:11# You're stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:50:11 > 0:50:14# I was unconscious, half asleep
0:50:14 > 0:50:19# The water is warm till you discover how deep
0:50:22 > 0:50:25# I wasn't jumping for me it was a fall
0:50:25 > 0:50:30# It's a long way down to nothing at all
0:50:30 > 0:50:34# Oh, yeah
0:50:34 > 0:50:38# You've got to get yourself together
0:50:38 > 0:50:44# You got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:50:45 > 0:50:50# Don't say that later will be better
0:50:50 > 0:50:55# Now you're stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
0:50:56 > 0:51:02# And if the night runs over
0:51:02 > 0:51:07# And if the day won't last
0:51:07 > 0:51:12# And if your way should falter
0:51:12 > 0:51:18# Along the stony pass
0:51:18 > 0:51:24# And if the night runs over
0:51:24 > 0:51:28# And if the days won't last
0:51:29 > 0:51:35# And if your way should falter
0:51:35 > 0:51:40# Along that stony pass
0:51:42 > 0:51:44# It's just a moment
0:51:47 > 0:51:49# It's just a moment
0:51:52 > 0:51:56# This too shall pass. #
0:51:56 > 0:51:59APPLAUSE
0:52:06 > 0:52:08It's a very different thing for us.
0:52:08 > 0:52:10There's been a couple of moments
0:52:10 > 0:52:12where I looked out there and I saw 100,000 people.
0:52:12 > 0:52:14And I'm not drinking. LAUGHTER
0:52:14 > 0:52:17What happened to the pyro? I was told there was going to be pyro?
0:52:17 > 0:52:19No pyro. There's no pyro.
0:52:20 > 0:52:25They're like letters, a lot of these songs and...
0:52:26 > 0:52:29..this next one I thought was to our daughters.
0:52:31 > 0:52:33But, like everything,
0:52:33 > 0:52:36you preach what you need to hear.
0:52:36 > 0:52:38Isn't that right, The Edge?
0:52:47 > 0:52:51Well, you preach what you need to hear.
0:52:52 > 0:52:54Oh, yeah.
0:52:56 > 0:52:59SONG: Get Out Of Your Own Way
0:53:03 > 0:53:06# Get out of your own way
0:53:10 > 0:53:14# Get out of your own way
0:53:17 > 0:53:22# Love hurts, now you're the girl who's left with no words
0:53:22 > 0:53:26# Your heart's a balloon but then it bursts
0:53:26 > 0:53:29# It doesn't take a cannon just a pin
0:53:29 > 0:53:31# Your skin's no covering
0:53:31 > 0:53:37# Resistance, love has got to fight for its existence
0:53:37 > 0:53:41# The enemy has armies of assistants
0:53:41 > 0:53:43# The amorous, the glamorous
0:53:43 > 0:53:44# A kiss, a fist
0:53:44 > 0:53:47# Listen to this, oh
0:53:47 > 0:53:50# Get out of your own way
0:53:52 > 0:53:53# Ah!
0:53:55 > 0:53:58# Get out of your own way
0:53:59 > 0:54:02# Ah!
0:54:02 > 0:54:05# I can sing it to you all night, all night
0:54:05 > 0:54:09# If I could, I'd make it all right, all right
0:54:09 > 0:54:13# Nothing's stopping you except what's inside
0:54:13 > 0:54:16# I can help you but it's your fight, your fight
0:54:16 > 0:54:19# Fight back, don't take it lying down
0:54:19 > 0:54:21# You've got to bite back
0:54:21 > 0:54:25# The face of liberty is starting to crack
0:54:25 > 0:54:29# She had a plan and then she took a smack in the mouth
0:54:29 > 0:54:31# And it all went south like
0:54:31 > 0:54:36# Freedom, the slaves are looking for someone to lead them
0:54:36 > 0:54:40# The master's looking for someone to need him
0:54:40 > 0:54:43# The promised land is there for those who need it most
0:54:43 > 0:54:45# And Lincoln's ghost said
0:54:46 > 0:54:50# Get out of your own way
0:54:51 > 0:54:54# Ah
0:54:54 > 0:54:57# Get out of your own way
0:54:58 > 0:55:01# Ah
0:55:01 > 0:55:04# I can sing it to you all night, all night
0:55:04 > 0:55:08# If I could, I'd make it all right, all right
0:55:08 > 0:55:12# Nothing's stopping you except what's inside
0:55:12 > 0:55:16# I can help you but it's your fight, your fight
0:55:16 > 0:55:19# Get out of your own way
0:55:23 > 0:55:27# Get out of your own way
0:55:45 > 0:55:49# Get out of your own way
0:55:53 > 0:55:56# Get out of your own way
0:56:00 > 0:56:04# Get out of your own way
0:56:12 > 0:56:15# Blessed are the arrogant
0:56:15 > 0:56:18# For theirs is the kingdom of their own company
0:56:20 > 0:56:23# Blessed are the bullies
0:56:23 > 0:56:26# For one day they will have to stand up to themselves
0:56:28 > 0:56:31# Blessed are the liars
0:56:31 > 0:56:37# For the truth could be awkward. #
0:56:40 > 0:56:42APPLAUSE
0:56:45 > 0:56:48Come and sit down here for me, guys.
0:56:48 > 0:56:50Come and sit down.
0:56:51 > 0:56:55So, tell us a little bit about the new album.
0:56:55 > 0:56:58Is it the sequel to Songs Of Innocence?
0:56:58 > 0:57:02Yeah, they were always a two-album set.
0:57:02 > 0:57:03And...
0:57:03 > 0:57:08We had written quite a few tunes for this second album,
0:57:08 > 0:57:12but then we got in the studio and we just kept writing, kept writing.
0:57:12 > 0:57:16We just got really excited about songwriting,
0:57:16 > 0:57:18just writing great songs.
0:57:18 > 0:57:21I think we've kind of reached a kind of crescendo with
0:57:21 > 0:57:25the songwriting on Songs Of Experience.
0:57:25 > 0:57:29Yeah, for us, going in, it was like the song is going to be the boss.
0:57:29 > 0:57:33- Yeah.- So, that's what we're going to serve, we going to make sure
0:57:33 > 0:57:37that every single one of these tunes is potentially a song we'd hear
0:57:37 > 0:57:41played on a rickety old piano in a bar in 25 years somewhere
0:57:41 > 0:57:43or on the...
0:57:43 > 0:57:48..the speakers in the elevator, like in a Muzak form because that,
0:57:48 > 0:57:49believe it or not,
0:57:49 > 0:57:53is when you really know your work has entered the language.
0:57:53 > 0:57:55Our aspiration is to be Muzak.
0:57:55 > 0:57:59Like, when I first heard a U2 song in Muzak, I was, like, "Yes!"
0:57:59 > 0:58:02- When was that? Do you remember? - I think it was in Japan,
0:58:02 > 0:58:05- Where The Streets Have No Name.- And were you all in the lift together?
0:58:05 > 0:58:08- Did you nudge each other? - I think I might have been
0:58:08 > 0:58:10in the lift with Bono but it was, like, actually a big moment.
0:58:10 > 0:58:14It was like... "We've arrived, mate. We're Muzak."
0:58:14 > 0:58:18And a lot of the songs on the album are letters to people.
0:58:18 > 0:58:21Who are they letters to and why have you chosen to do that?
0:58:21 > 0:58:26I've had a few brushes with mortality over the years,
0:58:26 > 0:58:30or reminders that we might not be around forever.
0:58:30 > 0:58:34And I just thought, well, if I'm not around, just in case,
0:58:34 > 0:58:41I should really have it laid out for my kids, my sons and daughters.
0:58:41 > 0:58:45For our kids, for our friends, our families.
0:58:45 > 0:58:47There is a letter to a country there,
0:58:47 > 0:58:49America, it's called American Soul.
0:58:49 > 0:58:52There's a letter to our audience about how you shouldn't trust
0:58:52 > 0:58:54performers too much.
0:58:54 > 0:58:58And not all of them are letters but that's where it came from.
0:58:58 > 0:59:01And when you're writing songs to... I mean,
0:59:01 > 0:59:05do you write songs together? And I know that you kind of make up
0:59:05 > 0:59:09lyrics that aren't really words or...?
0:59:09 > 0:59:11What do you do? Bongolese?
0:59:11 > 0:59:14- Is it called Bongolese? - I think every singer does that.
0:59:14 > 0:59:15What is it, though?
0:59:15 > 0:59:18It goes back to Little Richard "Be bop a Lula, she's my baby."
0:59:18 > 0:59:22It's the sound. You know, I just make things up.
0:59:22 > 0:59:25A lot of U2 songs come from improvisations
0:59:25 > 0:59:28but I'm not the only singer that ever did that.
0:59:28 > 0:59:32You have to step out into, you know, whatever the unknown is
0:59:32 > 0:59:35and just start singing about what's on your mind, or what's going on.
0:59:35 > 0:59:37I mean, you see it in comedy.
0:59:37 > 0:59:39- People, you know... Or rap, freestyle.- Yeah.
0:59:39 > 0:59:42Unfortunately, when you listen to it back,
0:59:42 > 0:59:45some of it's really not very good.
0:59:45 > 0:59:47So, on an album called Unforgettable Fire,
0:59:47 > 0:59:51there's a song called Elvis Presley In America.
0:59:51 > 0:59:56- Yeah.- If you want to hear Bongolese, full Bongolese,
0:59:56 > 0:59:58that is me trying to get inside Elvis
0:59:58 > 1:00:01in the last moments of his life.
1:00:01 > 1:00:03I mean, it's a mad idea. I do apologise.
1:00:03 > 1:00:06- I love it.- But there you go.
1:00:06 > 1:00:09One of the things that you actually did with your last
1:00:09 > 1:00:10album was you gifted it to people.
1:00:10 > 1:00:13- And some people weren't very happy about it.- Yeah.
1:00:13 > 1:00:15- They were quite vocal about it. - A couple.
1:00:15 > 1:00:18They weren't happy when it turned up on their iPhone.
1:00:18 > 1:00:21But then again that's only the people you know about,
1:00:21 > 1:00:24but we had a lot of people thank us for the gift.
1:00:24 > 1:00:26We have a much bigger audience now.
1:00:26 > 1:00:29- And I talked them into it.- Did you?
1:00:29 > 1:00:30I went into Apple and just said,
1:00:30 > 1:00:36"Look, you are the people who get people to pay for music.
1:00:36 > 1:00:40"Why not reward the people who pay for music by a gift?"
1:00:40 > 1:00:43And Tim Cook said, "That's a brilliant idea, really good.
1:00:43 > 1:00:46"And a gift? OK, good.
1:00:46 > 1:00:49"So you're giving your album free?"
1:00:49 > 1:00:50And we said, "No.
1:00:50 > 1:00:54"You pay us, and then you give it free."
1:00:54 > 1:00:56- And...- Did they agree to that?
1:00:56 > 1:00:58Yeah. We were trying to...
1:00:58 > 1:01:03If you imagine this as like our album, like a bottle of milk,
1:01:03 > 1:01:07was to arrive on your doorstep as a gift.
1:01:07 > 1:01:10- You'd open it up, there it is.- Open the door - "Ooh, that's lovely!"
1:01:10 > 1:01:13Our bottle of milk ended up going into your kitchen, into your fridge
1:01:13 > 1:01:16and actually sometimes on your Cornflakes.
1:01:16 > 1:01:17That's what happened,
1:01:17 > 1:01:19that upset people, but it was not the intention.
1:01:19 > 1:01:21Would you do it again? That's the question.
1:01:21 > 1:01:23Of course, yeah, yeah.
1:01:23 > 1:01:27It is time for another song, you guys. Can we have another one?
1:01:27 > 1:01:29- We can.- OK, head on up there for me.
1:01:29 > 1:01:31Thank you. You're out of here. See you in a minute.
1:01:31 > 1:01:33APPLAUSE
1:01:36 > 1:01:38OK.
1:01:38 > 1:01:41It's hard to imagine now, but in the early '90s,
1:01:41 > 1:01:43U2 were on the verge of breaking up.
1:01:43 > 1:01:46This is the song that brought the band back from the brink.
1:01:46 > 1:01:49Ladies and gentlemen, it's U2 with One.
1:01:52 > 1:01:55SONG: One
1:02:02 > 1:02:07So we wrote this in Germany after the Wall came down.
1:02:07 > 1:02:14And 30 years later we are singing it as walls are going up.
1:02:17 > 1:02:19One.
1:02:25 > 1:02:31# Is it getting better or do you feel the same?
1:02:35 > 1:02:42# Will it make it easier on you now you got someone to blame?
1:02:44 > 1:02:48# You say one love, one life
1:02:50 > 1:02:54# When it's one need in the night
1:02:55 > 1:02:59# One love, we get to share it
1:03:00 > 1:03:06# Leaves you, baby, if you don't care for it
1:03:17 > 1:03:19# Did I disappoint you
1:03:21 > 1:03:24# Leave a bad taste in your mouth?
1:03:27 > 1:03:35# You act like you never had love and you want me to go without
1:03:36 > 1:03:43# Well, it's too late tonight
1:03:43 > 1:03:48# To drag the past out into the light
1:03:48 > 1:03:51# We're one, but we're not the same
1:03:52 > 1:03:56# We get to carry each other, carry each other
1:03:56 > 1:04:00# One
1:04:09 > 1:04:12# Have you come here for forgiveness?
1:04:14 > 1:04:17# Have you come to raise the dead?
1:04:20 > 1:04:27# Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?
1:04:30 > 1:04:34# Did I ask too much, more than a lot?
1:04:35 > 1:04:38# You gave me nothing now it's all I got
1:04:40 > 1:04:44# We're one, but we're not the same
1:04:44 > 1:04:49# Well, we hurt each other then we do it again
1:04:49 > 1:04:55# You say love is a temple, love a higher law
1:04:55 > 1:05:00# Love is a temple, love the higher law
1:05:00 > 1:05:05# You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
1:05:05 > 1:05:11# And I can't be holding on to what you got
1:05:12 > 1:05:14# When all you got is hurt
1:05:14 > 1:05:16# One love
1:05:16 > 1:05:18# One blood
1:05:19 > 1:05:22# One life you got to do what you should
1:05:24 > 1:05:29# One life with each other
1:05:29 > 1:05:34# Sisters, brothers
1:05:35 > 1:05:39# One life, but we're not the same
1:05:39 > 1:05:44# We get to carry each other, carry each other
1:05:44 > 1:05:47# One
1:06:06 > 1:06:09# There's no-one else there's only us
1:06:11 > 1:06:15# No-one else, there's only us
1:06:16 > 1:06:20# No-one else, there's only us
1:06:22 > 1:06:25# No-one else, there's only us
1:06:26 > 1:06:29# Ooh-ooh
1:06:32 > 1:06:34# Ooh-ooh
1:06:36 > 1:06:39# Ooh-ooh
1:06:42 > 1:06:45# Ooh-ooh. #
1:06:51 > 1:06:54CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
1:07:02 > 1:07:04Sit down for me.
1:07:05 > 1:07:09There you go. Another instant classic. OK.
1:07:09 > 1:07:15It is now time for a quickfire quiz against the clock. Are you ready?
1:07:15 > 1:07:17Larry, who's the worst person to have on a tour bus?
1:07:18 > 1:07:19Say it.
1:07:19 > 1:07:21LAUGHTER
1:07:23 > 1:07:27Edge, who's had the most embarrassing stage moment?
1:07:27 > 1:07:30I think Bono, for sure, when his leather pants split open
1:07:30 > 1:07:35on the stage of the Lyceum, I think? And you were climbing up the PA...
1:07:35 > 1:07:37Wow, you were high up, too!
1:07:37 > 1:07:39- It was death.- We felt for him.
1:07:39 > 1:07:42It was quite difficult but he recovered very quickly.
1:07:42 > 1:07:45- Thank you.- Adam, who is the grown-up of the band?
1:07:47 > 1:07:52- He's the grown-up! - Are you the grown-up? OK.
1:07:52 > 1:07:54Who is the fussiest?

1:07:58 > 1:08:02You? Nice. Who is the worst-dressed offstage?

1:08:07 > 1:08:09Erm... Pyjamas.
1:08:09 > 1:08:11That's good. But a good thing.
1:08:11 > 1:08:14The guy in the Boomtown Rats, Johnnie, pyjamas.
1:08:14 > 1:08:15Big influence.
1:08:15 > 1:08:20Who has the strangest pre-gig ritual? Do you do clucking?
1:08:20 > 1:08:22No, no, no. You've heard animal noises.
1:08:22 > 1:08:26I do make animal noises but that is to...
1:08:26 > 1:08:29That's how singers prepare for singing. It's just...
1:08:29 > 1:08:32- Sounds like animal noises.- OK.
1:08:32 > 1:08:37- But it isn't?- PJ Harvey, I heard her, she does the same noises!
1:08:37 > 1:08:42Then we had the discussion together. That's how you sing.
1:08:42 > 1:08:45When was the last time you saw The Edge without his hat?
1:08:45 > 1:08:50I see it every day. Yeah, we do a sort of nude meditation.
1:08:50 > 1:08:54Too much information. Let's hear it for them, time's up.
1:08:54 > 1:08:56APPLAUSE
