0:07:35 > 0:07:40- Following his success, he married - his fiancee, Aino Jarnefelt...

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- Sibelius had to prove his worth - before they were allowed to marry.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35- A bar has been named in his honour. - Thank you.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- His fondness for the hotel bar - led to his ruin.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42- He stayed here far too often, - drinking until the early hours.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- At times, Sibelius was keen - to play his piano outdoors...

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- ..and wanted it positioned - on the rocks beside the lake.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- It was during those summers...

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- ..that much of his - most memorable work was composed.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55- Some claim that campfires - inspired Fire on the Island...

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- ..a rousing piece - for male voice choirs.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03- Youths lighting fires during parties - on the lake's islands.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- Sibelius was fond of a good party.

0:12:07 > 0:12:12- However, others claim that - the sunset provided the inspiration.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- Either way, - it was the world around him...

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- ..which inspired - his grandiose music.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58- Aino couldn't have come up with - a better plan.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01- The pair could enjoy - solitude and peace here.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04- It's believed - she designed the house.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09- She was a remarkable woman who took - care of her husband and daughters.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- As a way of acknowledging - her contribution...

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- ..the house was called Ainola.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20- In the quiet surroundings - and views of the lake...

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- ..Sibelius was revived.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27- He wrote his second symphony - and concerto for violin.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33- Sibelius insisted that a sauna - be incorporated into the house.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- Once again, his wife designed it.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38- It's a Nordic custom - to take a sauna...

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- ..then jog to a freezing lake - to take a dip...

0:14:42 > 0:14:46- ..and back to the hot sauna - as many times as possible...

0:14:47 > 0:14:49- ..to feel the benefit.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53- A sauna is a common feature in - every house and flat in the country.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- Of all the composers' houses - that we've visited...

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- ..this is one of - the most remarkable.

0:15:06 > 0:15:11- 6,000 visitors flock here each year - to see the house and museum.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16- Sibelius called his house - a Symphony of Trees...

0:15:16 > 0:15:21- ..and acknowledged that silence - was imperative for his work.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- He needed to hear the wind, - the birdsong and the lake...

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- ..which can be heard - throughout his music.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- But it wouldn't be his paradise - for ever, however.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- In 1908, he suffered problems - with his neck.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39- He underwent 13 operations.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42- WWI broke out, - preventing him from travelling.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46- He made a financial loss.

0:15:47 > 0:15:52- Perhaps this explains why the fourth - symphony sounds so melancholy.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58- ..and exudes a sense of foreboding.

0:15:58 > 0:16:03- He was anxious about his health - and was aware of his own mortality.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14- ..following - the 1917 Russian Revolution...

0:16:14 > 0:16:18- ..which led to a bloody civil war - and the death of his brother.

0:16:19 > 0:16:24- In the end, Finland elected - its first president in 1919...

0:16:24 > 0:16:27- ..by which time - Sibelius was in his 50s...

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- ..and his creative flair - had weakened.

0:16:32 > 0:16:37- He composed his final symphonies - in 1923 and 1924...

0:16:37 > 0:16:40- ..and his very last - was composed in 1929.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27- She was 98 - when she passed away in 1969.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35- Rarely has a composer contributed - so much to his homeland...

0:17:35 > 0:17:39- ..and meant so much - to the people of that country.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- The rest of the world - benefits from his legacy.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22- However, it survived, - and is worth a visit.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26- It's still an important port - and its harbour has a long history.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48- ..and his tireless effort - to promote Norwegian music...

0:21:57 > 0:22:02- ..he was the principal conductor of - the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14- It means Trolls' Hill, - which is apt...

0:22:14 > 0:22:18- ..since fairy tales - inspired Grieg's work.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24- As well as the villa, Grieg built - a composing cabin near the fjord...

0:23:08 > 0:23:13- This is a fitting memorial to - Grieg, who was a self-effacing man.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27- Edvard and Nina spent every spring - and summer here for 22 years.

0:23:27 > 0:23:32- For the rest of the time, they were - on tour or helping young composers.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36- Everywhere they went, - Edvard was praised and honoured.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43- He was a shy and retiring man - who never indulged in any scandal.
