:09:46. > :09:51.personally, probably. She felt she could settle into something and show
:09:51. > :09:55.all the colours and textures and dynamics of her voice. I think in
:09:55. > :09:59.the context of the competition it's difficult to pull an aria like that
:09:59. > :10:06.off without the context of the opera around it and it's repetitive. I
:10:07. > :10:13.would have liked her to sing some Mozart or Strauss. It's difficult to
:10:13. > :10:16.judge a singer in that one piece and real really feel her expressing all
:10:16. > :10:22.of the different things that she can express with that phenomenal

:10:50. > :10:54.like a lottery. Today is Connie's 30th birthday. I am as old as
:10:54. > :11:00.Cardiff singer. It's 30 years since this competition was launched. It's

:11:22. > :11:23.
:11:23. > :11:28.still counting. The competition really struck gold in 1989, when
:11:28. > :11:38.Britain Tyrvfel took on the Russian. They were giants. It was a
:11:38. > :11:39.
:11:39. > :11:44.remarkable ocean. -- occasion. I felt it was a moment of history.
:11:44. > :11:51.Bryn didn't leave empty handed. He won the song prize. To have those
:11:51. > :11:56.two baritones competing in '89 was sure to put Cardiff Singer on the
:11:56. > :12:00.map. As a spring board for new talent, Cardiff's reputation is
:12:00. > :12:05.unrivalled. Winning that competition was a very special moment for me. It
:12:05. > :12:11.actually changed my life. Cardiff Singer of the World launched
:12:11. > :12:16.my career. Over 30 years Cardiff has shown that there is no limit to the

:15:30. > :15:35.Now, tenor to tenor, what did you think, were you impressed? He has a
:15:35. > :15:41.great voice with great potential. He made the mistake of putting the
:15:41. > :15:46.wrong aria at front. Mozart at the front. He pushed hard. Then the
:15:46. > :15:50.hardest task of singing nine top Cs and he failed on a few. He did well
:15:50. > :15:54.to come back and sing. But you could hear he was tired by that point.
:15:54. > :15:58.would a sing deer that? Why put yourself in that position of singing
:15:58. > :16:02.nine top Cs when the pressure is really on? If it works you win the
:16:02. > :16:07.competition. If you sing, he should have started with that. Then he
:16:07. > :16:11.would have got nine top Cs because he would have been fresh and felt

:19:29. > :19:33.For a mezzo to be knocking out the top C. It's really hard to sing that
:19:33. > :19:37.high. She had real quality throughout the range, from the very
:19:37. > :19:42.o bottom to the top. When she came on stage, even in the rehearsal this
:19:42. > :19:46.afternoon, you knew she was confident. She meant business.
:19:46. > :19:52.included Elgar, a very different vocal quality. How was that?
:19:52. > :19:57.Fantastic. I would love to hear her sing Handel, for instance. She has a
:19:57. > :20:01.transparent voice. She's very flexible with it. It's an enormous
:20:01. > :20:06.instrument. She can do anything with it. She really pulled it out of the
:20:06. > :20:12.bag tonight? She did. I saw her in make up before she went on, and she
:20:12. > :20:16.was calm, relaxed. I'd have been in bits! Salutesly. The last singer on

:22:27. > :22:31.that we're joined by David Poutney, the chief executive and artistic
:22:31. > :22:36.director of Welsh National Opera. David, you've heard all five
:22:36. > :22:39.performances there. What was the atmosphere like in the hall? Very
:22:39. > :22:43.excited of course and each person that comes on has something
:22:43. > :22:47.different to offer. You find yourself rooting for them and when
:22:47. > :22:52.they go off the rails or something like that, it's pretty agonising.
:22:52. > :22:57.What really connected with the audience? Well, there's no question
:22:57. > :23:02.Jayme Bar-to-n is in a league of her own amongst those five wonderful
:23:02. > :23:10.people. She has such assurance, such brilliance across the range as you
:23:10. > :23:17.said just now. That's a major talent. Let's discuss Marco. How did
:23:17. > :23:24.he rate? One of the jobs of a young singer, and it's a big test is to
:23:24. > :23:27.know yourself and that means that you have to make the right choices.
:23:27. > :23:33.And coming to this competition from where he comes from and singing a
:23:33. > :23:37.Handel aria was just a piece of cultural misunderstanding. Wow.
:23:37. > :23:42.a difficult one to get the balance right. You're always on a look out
:23:42. > :23:46.for talent. How did tonight rate? Due find a star of the future?
:23:46. > :23:53.lady who won this evening is definitely going to make a fabulous
:23:53. > :23:58.career. Don't give too much away. How exciting! Who is it that you
:23:58. > :24:04.think is going to be the winner tonight, do you agree with David?
:24:04. > :24:06.Absolutely. Jayme Barton was in a league of her own. She outshone the
:24:07. > :24:12.competition by a long way. Fabulous. That's who we think should win here.
:24:12. > :24:19.But it's the judge's vote that really counts. You can tell from the
:24:19. > :24:25.buzz around the foyer, that we do have a result. But because it's very
:24:25. > :24:33.close to the nail tonight. Oh, I do... We have the winner! Here's the
:24:33. > :24:35.result. Here's Nicholas Payne. winner of this first concert is

:25:10. > :25:17.this year's Cardiff Singer of the World. That was just a few minutes
:25:17. > :25:21.ago and we're delighted now to welcome Jamie Barton from the USA
:25:21. > :25:28.beaming here, the winner of round one of BBC Cardiff Singer of the

:26:39. > :26:45.Really big fan. Have you been to the Doctor Who experience yet? Oh, yes.
:26:45. > :26:48.I even went over to Mermaid quay and looked at the Torchwood locations.
