0:06:20 > 0:06:21- Thanks very much. - Thank you.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27# There's no God and I don't really care... #

0:06:30 > 0:06:32A lot of people think there's guitars on the recordings.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34But it's just Ben hitting his drums as hard as possible

0:06:34 > 0:06:36and me playing the bass.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49# Mmmm, Papi pacify

0:06:49 > 0:06:51# Pacify my love... #

0:06:52 > 0:06:56There is nothing predictable about the BBC Sound of 2014,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59and this certainly rings true for the remarkable FKA twigs.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06# Mmmm, Papi pacify

0:07:06 > 0:07:10# Pacify our love, love

0:07:10 > 0:07:14# Ooh, ooh, ooh, won't you clarify?

0:07:14 > 0:07:19# Clarify our love... #

0:07:19 > 0:07:23# I know I can't get you home... #

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Hailing from west London, Jungle.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27# Yeah

0:07:27 > 0:07:30# I know I can't get you home

0:07:30 > 0:07:32# No, no

0:07:32 > 0:07:35# I can't feel the heat

0:07:35 > 0:07:36# No... #

0:07:36 > 0:07:39# Tell me, am I the type... #

0:07:39 > 0:07:40And, for me,

0:07:40 > 0:07:44no list of remarkable new music talent would be complete without him.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46He's the incredible MNEK.

0:07:46 > 0:07:47# Should I carry on?

0:07:47 > 0:07:49# Or should I say no more?

0:07:49 > 0:07:53# All of the things running through my mind... #

0:07:53 > 0:07:55# I'm just tryin' to work out

0:07:55 > 0:07:59# How to be like myself

0:07:59 > 0:08:01# I'm just tryin' to work out

0:08:01 > 0:08:04# These cards I've been dealt... #

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Chloe Howl, where did music feature into your life,

0:08:07 > 0:08:09when did it come a priority for you?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Em, I guess, well, I was always singing from when I was tiny,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14from when I was, like, a toddler.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17But I think when I got to about 13 was when I first started,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20like, trying to write songs and learning to write songs, and I think

0:08:20 > 0:08:23that was kind of the moment I was like, "This is what I want to do."

0:08:23 > 0:08:24# I'm just tryin' to work out

0:08:25 > 0:08:29# These cards I've been dealt. #

0:08:30 > 0:08:34So interesting to meet these artists just on the cusp of success,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36just when anything can happen to them.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Now, let's find out a bit more

0:08:38 > 0:08:41about how these acts actually get on the list.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43To do that, we are going to introduce to you

0:08:43 > 0:08:46just a couple of the 170 people who vote.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57Butterflies in the pit of your stomach, that's the kind of feeling

0:08:57 > 0:09:00that I get when I hear something new that I really, really like.

0:09:00 > 0:09:01And recently I got that feeling

0:09:01 > 0:09:05the first time that I heard MNEK's collaboration with Gorgon City.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07# Oh, I'm ready for your love

0:09:07 > 0:09:09# I'm ready for your love

0:09:09 > 0:09:11# Yeah, yeah

0:09:11 > 0:09:14# I'm ready for your love I'm ready for your love... #

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Even though he's, you know, written and produced for the likes of

0:09:17 > 0:09:20The Saturdays, he's collaborated with Duke Dumont,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23he's collaborated with Rudimental, he's written for pretty much

0:09:23 > 0:09:26every big artist out there at this moment in time,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28or produced or worked with them,

0:09:29 > 0:09:31this is still very much stage one of MNEK.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35# This is when I lose my balance

0:09:35 > 0:09:39# This is when I lose all control... #

0:09:39 > 0:09:40He loves his chicken, we love our chicken,

0:09:40 > 0:09:42we've shared lots of chicken together.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43We're chicken lovers.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47# The challenge I can call my own... #

0:09:47 > 0:09:50I met MNEK when I think he was, like, 15.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52We got along, started making music together

0:09:52 > 0:09:56and immediately realised that this guy is a bit of a prodigy.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59At 15, he was making beats and writing songs.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Really quickly. So he's kind of been a long-term collaborator for us.

0:10:03 > 0:10:04He's still really young now, isn't he?

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- 19. - Only just turned 19.

0:10:06 > 0:10:07You wouldn't believe it.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09# ..Fall

0:10:09 > 0:10:13# I think I'm about to fall... #

0:10:14 > 0:10:15People think I'm a new artist

0:10:15 > 0:10:18but really, I mean, I have been doing it five years.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20And, I guess, in that five years,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23I have kind of grown up in the industry almost.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27# ..Dee da ah-ah ah... #

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Patience is a virtue because, you know,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33I'd so many times that I really wanted to just get on with my career

0:10:33 > 0:10:38and get on with me being an artist, and really I wasn't ready until now.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Uh, and it was, like, my management and the people round me saying that

0:10:41 > 0:10:42your time will come.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45BACKING SINGERS: # ..Deeper and deeper... #

0:10:45 > 0:10:49My favourite way to find out about new artists is through other artists.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54# I promise I can grow tall

0:10:57 > 0:11:02# When making love is free... #

0:11:02 > 0:11:03FKA twigs,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05I think she's amazing in her song Water Me.

0:11:05 > 0:11:06I remember when the video came out,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09I just, like, couldn't stop crying looking at it.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14# ..I, I, I, I, I

0:11:14 > 0:11:16# I, I, I, I, I... #

0:11:17 > 0:11:19# And the ghoulish entities

0:11:19 > 0:11:22# They'll come floating through the wall... #

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Oh...Sampha.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26# ..Ghostly enemies

0:11:26 > 0:11:28# They'll come floating through your door... #

0:11:29 > 0:11:31We've seen him with SBTRKT,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33we've seen him a bit with Jessie Ware,

0:11:33 > 0:11:34we've seen him with Drake now,

0:11:34 > 0:11:36and Sampha, just Sampha by himself,

0:11:36 > 0:11:40is enough for me. I can't wait to see what he does in 2014.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42# ..Whoo-oo-ooh... #

0:11:42 > 0:11:47HE FREESTYLES

0:11:47 > 0:11:50# I've been waiting all night for you to... #

0:11:50 > 0:11:52The first time I heard Ella, I was like, "Ooh..."

0:11:52 > 0:11:54It gave me a little sort of funny feeling in my stomach,

0:11:54 > 0:11:56um, that hopefully wasn't trapped wind.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59# ..Tell me that you want me... #

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I remember when she first came to the studio

0:12:01 > 0:12:03and started singing and I was just like, "Wow."

0:12:03 > 0:12:05# ..Tell me that you need me

0:12:05 > 0:12:07# Tell me that you want me... #

0:12:07 > 0:12:09And what's great about Ella is that she sounds like

0:12:09 > 0:12:11a southern 1960s soul singer,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13and then you see her and she's, you know,

0:12:13 > 0:12:17a 2014 west London girl.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Right, let's go absolutely mental on this!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21# ..Tell me that you need me... #

0:12:21 > 0:12:23The very first Live Lounge we did was...

0:12:23 > 0:12:26it was really early on when I first started working with the boys.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30# ..Tell me that you want me... #

0:12:30 > 0:12:33And it was amazing cos I had no stylings

0:12:33 > 0:12:36and I was wearing this jumper from my mum's wardrobe.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37A lot of people were backing me up and going,

0:12:37 > 0:12:39"But it's not about what she wears, it's how it sounds."

0:12:39 > 0:12:42And it was really encouraging from such an early stage for me.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44The adrenaline was incredible.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46It was wicked.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49# ..Yeah, yeah, yeah. #

0:12:51 > 0:12:53# You made a fool out of me

0:12:53 > 0:12:55# Took the skin off my back, honey

0:12:58 > 0:12:59# Don't breathe when I talk

0:12:59 > 0:13:02# Cos you haven't been spoken to... #

0:13:02 > 0:13:06I voted for Royal Blood because they are one of the best bands I saw live.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08# ..A bullet with your name on it... #

0:13:09 > 0:13:12And Out Of The Black is just the most incredible riff,

0:13:12 > 0:13:14noise, passionate feast of a song

0:13:14 > 0:13:16I've heard for a while and I love it.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26MUSIC ENDS

0:13:26 > 0:13:30We spoke to some previous winners, as well as some of this year's nominees,

0:13:30 > 0:13:34to find out what life is like when you're one to watch.

0:13:34 > 0:13:35# I know it's gonna be

0:13:36 > 0:13:37# Oh, it

0:13:38 > 0:13:42# Oh, ee-ee, ooh-ooh, be-ee... #

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Bearing in mind I went straight from, like, just writing songs on my guitar

0:13:48 > 0:13:53in a bedroom to travelling the world and doing interviews,

0:13:53 > 0:13:57and being photographed, and I didn't really understand what was happening,

0:13:57 > 0:13:59it's quite hard to take all that stuff in,

0:13:59 > 0:14:00in the beginning.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05# ..But I don't think I need you

0:14:07 > 0:14:09# Oh, ooh-ooh. #

0:14:09 > 0:14:11# For ever I try to make it right

0:14:11 > 0:14:13# But together we saw the end in sight
