0:41:41 > 0:41:49# At dawn I'll wake up singing sentimental overtures

0:41:49 > 0:41:57# This heart of mine is gaily dancing now

0:41:57 > 0:42:06# I taste the wine Of real romancing now

0:42:06 > 0:42:15# Somehow this crazy world has taken on a wonderful design

0:42:15 > 0:42:19# As long as life endures

0:42:19 > 0:42:24# It's yours, this heart of mine... #

0:45:11 > 0:45:18# This heart of mine Was doing very well

0:45:18 > 0:45:24# The world was mine as far as I could tell

0:45:24 > 0:45:32# And then quite suddenly I met you and I dreamed of gay amours

0:45:32 > 0:45:39# At dawn I woke up singing sentimental overtures

0:45:39 > 0:45:47# This heart of mine is gaily dancing now

0:45:47 > 0:45:54# I taste the wine of real romancing now

0:45:54 > 0:46:01# Somehow this crazy world has taken on a wonderful design

0:46:01 > 0:46:08# As long as life endures it's yours, this heart of mine

0:48:33 > 0:48:38# Somehow this crazy world

0:48:38 > 0:48:43# Has taken on

0:48:43 > 0:48:47# A wonderful design

0:48:47 > 0:48:55# As long as life endures it's yours

0:48:55 > 0:49:07# This heart of mine

0:49:15 > 0:49:21# Mine. #

0:49:21 > 0:49:26APPLAUSE

0:49:26 > 0:49:30Matthew Ford and the Maida Vale Singers singing This Heart of Mine,

0:49:30 > 0:49:33a song written especially for Fred Astaire

0:49:33 > 0:49:36when he starred in Ziegfield Follies.

0:49:36 > 0:49:41The John Wilson Orchestra conducted, of course, by John Wilson.

0:49:49 > 0:49:55John Wilson will return to the stage in a few minutes for the second half of tonight's Prom.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58He first fell in love with film musicals as a young boy

0:49:58 > 0:50:02watching Saturday afternoon matinees on television at home in Gateshead -

0:50:02 > 0:50:05an antidote to endless sport, he says.

0:50:05 > 0:50:09This is the third time he's brought the magic of musicals to the Proms

0:50:09 > 0:50:13and his fascination and admiration remains a lifelong passion.

0:50:17 > 0:50:21The enduring appeal of these movie musicals, for me, is simply the tunes.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26First-class tunes, brilliantly played and sung perfectly.

0:50:26 > 0:50:33Here you get some of the best songs of the last century in the most stylish settings.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44I chose 42nd Street because I needed a good, sparky opener.

0:50:44 > 0:50:50You get these extended routines which involve the chorus and the soloists

0:50:50 > 0:50:53and it makes for a very satisfactory set piece.

0:50:53 > 0:50:58# I just got an invitation through the mail... #

0:50:58 > 0:51:03Fred Astaire had more hit songs written for him than any other performer.

0:51:03 > 0:51:09More than Frank Sinatra, more than Ella Fitzgerald or any of those great jazz singers.

0:51:09 > 0:51:13Irving Berlin loved Fred Astaire's interpretations of his songs

0:51:13 > 0:51:17because he didn't deviate from the melody he'd composed.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19# Tying up my white tie

0:51:19 > 0:51:22# Brushing off my tail #

0:51:22 > 0:51:25Top Hat, White Tie and Tails is one of his signature tunes.

0:51:25 > 0:51:30It's a very early example of the extended dance routine.

0:51:35 > 0:51:38We start the second half with a sequence from A Star Is Born.

0:51:38 > 0:51:43Judy Garland gives one of her best performances in one of Harold Arlen's best songs

0:51:43 > 0:51:47with a terrific lyric by Ira Gershwin in The Man That Got Away.

0:51:47 > 0:51:50It was an absolute no-brainer. We had to include that.

0:51:50 > 0:51:52# And all because

0:51:52 > 0:51:59# Of the man that got away... #

0:51:59 > 0:52:04I'm including Triplets, which was from The Band Wagon.

0:52:04 > 0:52:08The sequence starts - Fred Astaire, Nanette Fabray and Jack Buchanan.

0:52:10 > 0:52:15They are all dressed up as babies and they hate each other.

0:52:15 > 0:52:17# We hate each other very much

0:52:17 > 0:52:19# We hate our folks... #

0:52:19 > 0:52:23I've chosen to end the concert with Put On Your Sunday Clothes from Hello Dolly!

0:52:23 > 0:52:29I think that musical is kind of the last big movie to come from the old studio system.

0:52:33 > 0:52:39# Put on your Sunday clothes There's lots of world out there... #

0:52:39 > 0:52:43Everyone in Yonkers is going to New York for the day and they're getting on the train.

0:52:43 > 0:52:48You basically see the emptying out of the town onto this train during the concert.

0:52:48 > 0:52:51It could only happen in a musical.

0:52:51 > 0:52:56Singing and dancing are primary human impulses,

0:52:56 > 0:52:59even if you are not very good at singing or dancing,

0:52:59 > 0:53:04it's something we have a need to do as human beings.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07And...what's wrong with that?

0:53:13 > 0:53:18The second half of tonight's Prom charts the Hollywood musical

0:53:18 > 0:53:22from the Fabulous 50s to its final flourish at the end of the 1960s.

0:53:22 > 0:53:25We begin with Judy Garland, the ultimate Hollywood star,

0:53:25 > 0:53:30known as much for her troubled life as her tremendous talent.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33In the film A Star Is Born, she gave what many regard

0:53:33 > 0:53:37as her finest screen performance, with truly memorable songs.

0:53:37 > 0:53:39Among them Gotta Have Me Go With You

0:53:39 > 0:53:42and the heartbreaking The Man That Got Away.

0:53:42 > 0:53:46APPLAUSE

0:53:46 > 0:53:50And here, once again, to conduct his orchestra, is John Wilson.
