:09:06. > :09:09.That's why we do it. Bear that in mind. He was also spotted by a
:09:09. > :09:14.talent scout who heard him singing while at work in the local car

:28:29. > :28:33.Well, the journey that the choir has taken to get here tonight with
:28:33. > :28:37.me has been a very intense one, and there's been no period where they
:28:37. > :28:41.have been able to relax at all. We have had eight pieces to learn in a
:28:41. > :28:46.very short space of time, so they have had to hit the ground running
:28:46. > :28:50.really from the word go. What I really try and do is to get them to
:28:50. > :28:54.feel really confident, happy and relaxed and free to be themselves
:28:54. > :28:56.and to go for the pieces, so they don't hold back, but they have to
:28:56. > :28:59.imagine they're performing it right from the minute they start singing

:33:10. > :33:11.I
:33:11. > :33:11.I would
:33:11. > :33:14.I would like
:33:14. > :33:20.I would like to introduce you to the next of our fantastic soloists.
:33:20. > :33:24.Kristan Harvey started playing the violin at the age of nine in her
:33:24. > :33:27.home in Orkney that early start paid off because earlier this year
:33:27. > :33:35.she was handed the title BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician
:33:35. > :33:38.of the Year. She joins us for two songs. The second is a specially-
:33:38. > :33:45.arranged medley for tonight for Kristan and the BBC Symphony
:33:45. > :33:55.Orchestra, but to start with, Gillian's Waltz accompanied by
:33:55. > :34:00.
:34:00. > :34:04.Stuart Semple. Please welcome I think bringing traditional music
:34:04. > :34:11.into The Proms is an absolutely brilliant idea. The two styles of
:34:11. > :34:14.music are still probably quite separate to a lot of people, and
:34:14. > :34:19.joining them together I think is just great. When I am on stage with
:34:19. > :34:23.the orchestra, I think it will be quite nerve-wracking. I'm assuming
:34:23. > :34:26.that it will be. I have had the opportunity before to sit in an
:34:26. > :34:31.orchestra and watch what the soloist is doing, but I've never
:34:31. > :34:41.been the soloist, so that's going to be quite an experience for me.
:34:41. > :34:41.
:34:41. > :48:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 397 seconds
:48:18. > :48:21.That was, of course, the William wonderful BBC Scottish Symphony
:48:21. > :48:22.Orchestra. Wasn't our wonderful violinist Kristan Harvey fantastic,
:48:22. > :48:29.21 years of age, ladies and gentlemen?
:48:29. > :48:31.APPLAUSE Now, next up tonight, one of the
:48:31. > :48:35.most successful Scottish singer/songwriters of his
:48:35. > :48:41.generation. He's had a string of hits with his band Travis,
:48:41. > :48:44.including our other National Anthem - you know it, don't you - Why Does
:48:44. > :48:50.It Always Rain on Me? Yes, we know that one here in Scotland. Also,
:48:50. > :48:52.he's had great critical acclaim with his solo album Recorder.
:48:52. > :49:00.Please give a huge welcome to Fran Healy.
:49:00. > :49:07.APPLAUSE I've never done anything like this
:49:07. > :49:13.before. I remember my first experience of a big orchestra was
:49:13. > :49:17.at maid avail studios, and we were doing this session for I think it
:49:17. > :49:22.was Steve Lemac. We were sort of walking out of the building, and I
:49:22. > :49:25.heard this really big sound, and I looked through a door, and there
:49:25. > :49:32.was this giant orchestra playing, and I'd never, ever seen an
:49:32. > :49:36.orchestra. And this was me being about - I was about 20 - 5 or 6 at
:49:36. > :49:40.the time, and it left quite an impression on me. I'm really
:49:40. > :49:47.honoured to be a part of the Proms because ever since I was a kid, you
:49:47. > :49:54.would hear it on the radio occasionally or see it on the TV,
:49:54. > :50:00.and now here I am standing with a guitar, and you know, not a
:50:00. > :50:04.trombone or, I don't know, a cello or something. So it's really cool.
:50:04. > :50:08.I'm really excited to do it. APPLAUSE
:50:08. > :50:13.You've got two numbers for us tonight. Tell us, what are you
:50:13. > :50:19.going to sing? The first song I am going to sing is a song called Sing.
:50:19. > :50:23.We all know that one. Yeah, and I'm going to do that just busking, so
:50:23. > :50:25.I'll put my hat down, and you can chuck money if you want.
:50:25. > :50:28.LAUGHTER Then I am going to sing another
:50:28. > :50:32.song called Closer, and that's going to be with these guys.
:50:32. > :50:42.Fantastic. We won't hold people any longer. Enjoy, everyone, Fran Healy.

:03:07. > :03:12.welcome back one of the biggest names of the West End. He has made

:03:29. > :03:34.of solo albums and awards to his As an artist on stage at the Proms
:03:34. > :03:39.it is fantastic to see the audience enjoy the music, really have a fun
:03:39. > :03:43.time, just there for the sheer joy of celebrating music and having a
:03:43. > :03:48.good time. Having a good time, really. When you see that happening
:03:48. > :03:54.in the audience, it just transfers on to the stage. It gives you more
:03:54. > :04:02.energy, more enthusiasm for the show. Bringing home for me has been
:04:02. > :04:08.a catalyst for my career. It's an amazing song in general. It's such
:04:08. > :04:13.an emotional one for me to sing. It really does - every time I sing it,
:04:13. > :04:21.it pulls on the heart strings. It's a very special song. It's going to

:17:47. > :17:57.back to the stage, with another classic Travis track, a huge
:17:57. > :18:02.welcome, please for Fran Healy. All I want to do is rock with, the
:18:03. > :18:08.first song I thought, this is a proper song. I could hear it in my
:18:08. > :18:14.head, I wrote it using an acoustic guitar. I had the idea of it
:18:14. > :18:20.getting louder and louder towards the end. There is a song by Roy
:18:20. > :18:30.Orbison called Running Scared. It gets bigger and bigger and it ends
:18:30. > :18:31.
:18:31. > :18:41.at the loudest point. I wanted to make a song like that.

:32:05. > :32:10.1874. Time now to welcome on to the stage the Dundee Proms chorus.
:32:11. > :32:15.This experience, for the choir, has been hugely important. Whenever an
:32:15. > :32:17.experience like this happens for any choir it is very significant in
:32:17. > :32:24.their lives. It is something different to anything else they've
:32:24. > :32:31.done. They've had to, as singers, be exposed, let go and sing.
:32:31. > :32:36.L, without -- without any reservations at all. They have to
:32:36. > :32:39.trust the conductor to do that. Some may never have performed
:32:39. > :32:44.before. It is a huge thrill and rush for them that they may get, in
:32:44. > :32:50.other ways in their lives, so to get it through a performance and
:32:50. > :32:55.through a community choir like this really gives them confidence and
:32:55. > :32:59.it's a pleasurable memory for them. It is a lovely experience for them.
:32:59. > :33:02.It benefits their lives all around, through and through, as a community
