0:00:41 > 0:00:46MUSIC: "Theme from Doctor Who" by Ron Grainer

0:00:46 > 0:00:50It's like this huge Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebration.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53A wonderful choir, wonderful orchestra.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58Ben Foster's the most handsome conductor on the planet.

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Alert! Alert!

0:00:59 > 0:01:02- We have the Daleks, Weeping Angels, Cybermen...- Obey!

0:01:02 > 0:01:05When they come in, I can hear the screams behind me.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08And I do have to turn around and just enjoy it.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Everybody's extremely excited,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16and I just think it's going to be a really great show.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Who would not want to perform in this?

0:01:17 > 0:01:21This is one of the iconic concert halls of the world.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26The rest of the year, we do very lovely concerts that are very

0:01:26 > 0:01:30straightforward, because there are no monsters, there's no Doctor Who.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37One of my new year's resolutions was to go and watch more live music,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40so this is kind of a spectacular way to do it.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42I keep meeting people outside, and they say,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45"I'm learning violin or trombone," and you think, "Great."

0:01:45 > 0:01:49And I hope that coming to a concert like this will inspire them

0:01:49 > 0:01:50to want to be in orchestras.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Hello! Welcome to the BBC Proms.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57When you're sat in the auditorium, there's nothing really like it.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I looked at some of the kids, and they're like...

0:02:00 > 0:02:02It's cool, man.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07APPLAUSE

0:02:12 > 0:02:15It's amazing how the songs really do stick with you.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18But, like, Doctor Who is so about the drama,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21and the music is such a huge part of the show.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I've always written very lyrical themes.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34They always feel like they're from the heart, I think.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Trying to just grab people and sing big choruses of love.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Murray Gold is a genius.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50And the number of melodies that man has come up with

0:02:50 > 0:02:53that are utterly haunting, utterly memorable.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56I've become quite attached to some of the music in this show,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59because, you know, I find it very moving.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02And also I look at Karen and Arthur and Jenna, you know, acting

0:03:02 > 0:03:07and doing their best, and then all this soaring sort of emotive music

0:03:07 > 0:03:10swelling up around you, it kind of stirs me, I guess.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13It's one of the things I'm going to miss the most, definitely.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20APPLAUSE

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Cos guess who? Ha!

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Listen, you lot, you're all whizzing about. It's really very distracting.

0:10:03 > 0:10:09Could you all just stay still a minute? BECAUSE I AM TALKING!

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Now, the question of the hour is, "Who's got the Pandorica?"

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Answer - "I do."

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Next question - "Who's coming to take it from me?"

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Come on! Look at me.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26No plan, no back-up, no weapons worth a damn.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Oh, and something else - I don't have anything to lose.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34So, if you're sitting up there in your silly little spaceship

0:10:34 > 0:10:36with all your silly little guns

0:10:36 > 0:10:39and you've got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight,

0:10:39 > 0:10:43just remember who's standing in your way.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48Remember every black day I ever stopped you.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- That was really disappointing. - I know, I'm sorry.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50How could you not get tickets?

0:11:50 > 0:11:52I didn't realise it would be so popular!

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- Well, you must know somebody. - Eh? Why?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56Doctor, it's a concert about YOU.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00And I've got the perfect way to get us in.

0:12:00 > 0:12:01What's that?

0:12:01 > 0:12:02A Hyperscape Body Swap ticket,

0:12:02 > 0:12:06valid for all entertainment events in the history of the universe.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Body swap?- Exactly. We just scrape off this little bit of foil here,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13and right now, two people sitting in the Albert Hall get deleted.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16- Deleted?- Yes, we just appear in their seats.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- But what about the deleted people? - Oh...they get deleted.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Otherwise we'd be sitting in their laps.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23And they wouldn't want that at all.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25I mean, imagine if some young fellow out there

0:12:25 > 0:12:28suddenly gets you in his lap. He'd be furious.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- By "deleted", you mean... - They get sent outside.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33They materialise perfectly safely a few streets away.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36- Oh, OK.- Naked.- Naked?

0:12:36 > 0:12:40Yes. We get their clothes too. It's all part of the Body Swap service.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42But they'll miss the concert. That's not fair.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Ah, they get compensated. A nice packet of biscuits.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49Jammie Dodgers, probably. Also a billion billion pounds, immortality,

0:12:49 > 0:12:51X-ray vision, a spacebus, an electric camel,

0:12:51 > 0:12:54a house that's bigger on the inside - and the outside -

0:30:45 > 0:30:47There are some corners of the universe

0:30:47 > 0:30:49which have bred the most terrible things,

0:30:49 > 0:30:53things which act against everything that we believe in.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55They must be fought.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:34:19 > 0:34:22LOUD CHEERING

0:34:22 > 0:34:24Hello.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28Are we having a nice time?

0:34:28 > 0:34:30CHEERING

0:34:30 > 0:34:34I can't hear you! I said, "Are we having a nice time?"

0:34:34 > 0:34:36LOUD CHEERING

0:34:36 > 0:34:39Now, in case you're wondering, my name is Matt Smith,

0:34:39 > 0:34:40and I play The Doctor.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43As you all know, this is a very special year for Doctor Who.

0:34:43 > 0:34:4450 years!

0:34:44 > 0:34:46CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:34:46 > 0:34:49Amazing! It's amazing!

0:34:49 > 0:34:51And I can't think of a better way to celebrate

0:34:51 > 0:34:52than to be here with all of you!

0:34:52 > 0:34:54One of the great joys of playing this extraordinary,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57legendary Time Lord is the support and knowledge

0:34:57 > 0:35:00and love and brilliance of you guys, the fans.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02You really make the show what it is, so thank you.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04From the bottom of my heart, you are...

0:35:04 > 0:35:07- LOUD CHEERING - ..the best.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11But now it is time for more of Murray Gold's brilliant music.

0:35:11 > 0:35:12The next piece made its debut last year

0:35:12 > 0:35:14in Asylum Of The Daleks,

0:35:14 > 0:35:17together with a rather enigmatic new character.

0:35:17 > 0:35:21It's as delicate as a souffle and one of my personal favourites!

0:35:21 > 0:35:22Here is The Impossible Girl.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26- Love you, Matt! - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:35:34 > 0:35:35Once I'd seen her face,

0:35:35 > 0:35:38I wanted to write something bright, optimistic, happy.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40She's a fresh face,

0:35:40 > 0:35:43so I wanted to get that feeling across in the music.

0:35:49 > 0:35:50Impossible Girl was this theme

0:35:50 > 0:35:53that was introduced to represent Clara's character.

0:35:53 > 0:35:57It's hesitant and it's spiralling and mysterious, in a way,

0:35:57 > 0:35:59which is her when we first met her.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02There's something so fairy-tale about that music,

0:36:02 > 0:36:06and hopefully, you know, that's what connects the audience.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12The use of character themes is absolutely essential.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15It gives the audience a reference musically

0:36:15 > 0:36:19and identifies characters, and I think audiences catch onto that.

0:36:19 > 0:36:23It's amazing how the songs really do stick with you.

0:36:23 > 0:36:25I love Clara's Impossible Girl theme,

0:36:25 > 0:36:28and it's kind of something for me to keep. I love it!

0:40:43 > 0:40:46My name is Peter Davison.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:40:52 > 0:40:55This is fun!

0:40:55 > 0:40:57I'm so pleased to be with you today

0:40:57 > 0:41:00for this special celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03And I'm especially excited to be introducing this next sequence

0:41:03 > 0:41:07that looks back to the classic era, my era, of Doctor Who.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10- CHEERING AND APPLAUSE - Thank you.

0:41:10 > 0:41:15The classic series of Doctor Who ran for 26 years from 1963.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19Obviously, I'm quite late on in those 26 years!

0:41:19 > 0:41:22Not 1963, I'm not that old.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Actually, I'm almost that old.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28This sequence includes music by Tristram Cary,

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Martin Slavin, Malcolm Clarke,

0:41:31 > 0:41:32Dudley Simpson, Paddy Kingsland,

0:41:32 > 0:41:35Peter Howell and Mark Ayres.

0:41:35 > 0:41:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:41:39 > 0:41:42And it begins with the iconic sound of the TARDIS

0:41:42 > 0:41:44created by Brian Hodgson

0:41:44 > 0:41:47with the help of his mother's front-door key and a piano string.

0:41:47 > 0:41:51Please don't try this at home.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53And then made more weird and more wonderful

0:41:53 > 0:41:57in the now legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59To perform this classic Doctor Who medley,

0:41:59 > 0:42:03the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is joined by two of these composers,

0:42:03 > 0:42:05Mark Ayres and Peter Howell.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08Please give them a huge classic round of applause.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:17 > 0:42:19We were asked to put together a short suite,

0:42:19 > 0:42:21eight minutes we have got,

0:42:21 > 0:42:25to tell the story of classic Doctor Who from 1963 to 1989,

0:42:25 > 0:42:26which is quite a tall order!

0:42:26 > 0:42:29There are five or six very well known, I hope,

0:42:29 > 0:42:31pieces of incidental music from Doctor Who,

0:42:31 > 0:42:33which we have arranged

0:42:33 > 0:42:36and Ben Foster has orchestrated it all up.

0:42:36 > 0:42:37It was a passion of mine

0:42:37 > 0:42:39that we did something with Radiophonic for the 50th.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42This music meant everything to me as a child.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46Peter was also my tutor at the film school,

0:42:46 > 0:42:48so to be able to go up to my old tutor and say,

0:42:48 > 0:42:52"Bar 54, not quite working." So I had a good time with that.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56It's several firsts all at once, really.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59I've never played synth with an orchestra.

0:42:59 > 0:43:03And I certainly never imagined doing it at the Albert Hall!

0:43:03 > 0:43:06It's really nice for us to be asked to join in!

0:43:06 > 0:43:08It's a great opportunity, yes!

0:43:08 > 0:43:11We've had a terrific time doing it, and I hope that the audience

0:43:11 > 0:43:15feel that we've rightly celebrated their contribution to the show.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20I watched Doctor Who from its opening episode,

0:43:20 > 0:43:22and the music from the Radiophonic Workshop

0:43:22 > 0:43:26is hugely sort of emotional and seemed to fit it like a glove.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29It was sort of slightly science-fictiony music,

0:43:29 > 0:43:31which was unusual then.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36This is classical music, this Radiophonic Workshop

0:43:36 > 0:43:40is wonderful, important music that people should hear again.

0:43:48 > 0:43:55METALLIC THRUMMING
