0:00:02 > 0:00:05Welcome to the Royal Albert Hall. Shortly we will be having a live performance here, which will be
0:00:05 > 0:00:08unique and I hope extraordinary, of southern soul music.
0:00:08 > 0:00:10We celebrate the music of Stax Records,
0:00:10 > 0:00:13with the help of some of their greatest surviving artists
0:00:13 > 0:00:16and some wonderful British artists who are fans of that music.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18They'll be backed and accompanied by myself
0:00:18 > 0:00:20and the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.
0:00:20 > 0:00:22Welcome to the BBC Proms.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46One, two, three, four.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49MUSIC: Knock On Wood by Eddie Floyd
0:00:54 > 0:00:57# Knock, knock on wood... #
0:00:57 > 0:01:03Stax was one of the main portals for the entrance of soul music
0:01:03 > 0:01:05into the American scene.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08There's gospel in there, there's pop
0:01:08 > 0:01:09and a little bit from jazz.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12We would take downhome blues and turn it into dance music.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Give it up, even if it was a slow tune,
0:01:15 > 0:01:17you'd want to dance to it. It was that kind of thing.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19# Hold on
0:01:19 > 0:01:21# I'm coming
0:01:21 > 0:01:23# Hold on... #
0:01:23 > 0:01:27We were a black and white staff, black and white creators.
0:01:27 > 0:01:33So that merging of the influences and our backgrounds
0:01:33 > 0:01:38was one of the major things that made the music of Stax what it was.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44It's one of the first times in music where black and white musicians
0:01:44 > 0:01:48mixed together, and it broke down racial barriers at the time.
0:01:48 > 0:01:54# Have I told you lately that I love you... #
0:01:54 > 0:01:56We knew that we were doing good music,
0:01:56 > 0:02:00but we had no idea that it would go worldwide.
0:02:03 > 0:02:081967, we got the tour together to come to the UK.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12Called it the Stax/Volt Tour.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16They were very surprised about the reception that they had.
0:02:16 > 0:02:20I mean, they went crazy for what we were doing.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23And, actually, we weren't doing anything, we were just singing.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26We were singing as hard as we could.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28# Soul man... #
0:02:28 > 0:02:30They knew our music, they were listening to our records,
0:02:30 > 0:02:32they were being played by radio stations.
0:02:32 > 0:02:37So we came into what became sort of a home for us for many years,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39even to this day.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44# I can't stand up... #
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Well, doing what we're doing here is a celebration,
0:02:47 > 0:02:50to do it at the Royal Albert Hall is pretty special.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53If I hadn't been asked to do it I would have been very annoyed.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56I love this music and I've recorded quite a lot of it myself.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59I'm thrilled to be a part of it.
