0:03:22 > 0:03:24Our starting point for writing the songs

0:03:24 > 0:03:26was probably the Everly Brothers.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Just as a reference point, because we wanted a sort of girl and boy

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Everly Brothers, if you will.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34But as far as the song writing,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36we were going for that style of, you know,

0:03:36 > 0:03:38what was considered a pop song,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41you know, really short and to the point and clever and concise.

0:03:48 > 0:03:53# No lying, no fighting No me versus you

0:03:53 > 0:03:56# The make-ups, the break-ups

0:03:56 > 0:03:59# We know how to do

0:03:59 > 0:04:06# We swore up and down that this time we were through

0:04:06 > 0:04:11# I thought that we said goodbye

0:04:12 > 0:04:15# The leaving, the grieving

0:04:15 > 0:04:17# The new paramours

0:04:17 > 0:04:20# The constant comparing

0:04:20 > 0:04:23# And soon we'd get bored

0:04:23 > 0:04:30# The certain nostalgia for the Hundred Years' War

0:04:30 > 0:04:36# I thought that we said goodbye

0:04:37 > 0:04:43# Goodbye is nothing but a run-of-the-mill

0:04:43 > 0:04:49# Goodbye, a temporary end

0:04:49 > 0:04:54# Goodbye, I know it won't be long until

0:04:54 > 0:05:02# We're saying hello again

0:05:12 > 0:05:18# Goodbye, it's nothing but a run-of-the-mill

0:05:18 > 0:05:24# Goodbye, a temporary end

0:05:29 > 0:05:35# We're saying hello again

0:05:35 > 0:05:41# The force of a habit that's hard to resist

0:05:41 > 0:05:46# The fatal mistake of the one little kiss

0:05:46 > 0:05:53# It's back on the tightrope across the abyss

0:10:02 > 0:10:05APPLAUSE

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Come Love Come is a song that I wrote

0:10:10 > 0:10:13based on reading a lot of slave narratives.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Um, that is a time period that's really interested me

0:10:16 > 0:10:21because I play music from that time period and of course it interests me

0:10:21 > 0:10:24because of my ancestors and, you know, where I come from,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27but also because it's such a hidden subject in the States.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30You know, the realities, the everyday realities

0:10:30 > 0:10:31of what slavery was like,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34and so reading these personal histories of people

0:10:34 > 0:10:37kind of blew me away and then the only thing I could do, really,

0:10:37 > 0:10:38was to write a song about it.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:10:49 > 0:10:52# The way is long and hard, I know

0:10:52 > 0:10:55# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:10:55 > 0:10:59# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:11:12 > 0:11:19# When I was four, my loving mam was cornered by the boss's man

0:11:19 > 0:11:22# She turned her head and got struck down

0:11:22 > 0:11:26# They buried her in the cold, cold ground

0:11:26 > 0:11:29# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:11:29 > 0:11:32# The way is long and hard, I know

0:11:32 > 0:11:36# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:11:36 > 0:11:39# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:11:46 > 0:11:49# When I was 12, my father dear

0:11:49 > 0:11:52# Was strong of arm and free of fear

0:11:52 > 0:11:56# Until the day he raised his hand

0:11:56 > 0:11:59# Then he was sold to Alabam'

0:11:59 > 0:12:02# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:12:02 > 0:12:06# The way is long and hard, I know

0:12:06 > 0:12:09# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:12:09 > 0:12:13# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:12:26 > 0:12:29# When I was 16, found my bloom

0:12:29 > 0:12:32# Found my man, we jumped the broom

0:12:32 > 0:12:35# We pledged each other the rest of our lives

0:12:35 > 0:12:39# And on Saturday nights We were man and wife

0:12:39 > 0:12:42# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:12:42 > 0:12:45# The way is long and hard, I know

0:12:45 > 0:12:49# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:12:49 > 0:12:52# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:13:05 > 0:13:08# When I was 18, bugles called

0:13:08 > 0:13:12# And boys in bloom came o'er the wall

0:13:12 > 0:13:15# I took my chance and followed free

0:13:15 > 0:13:18# They led the way to Tennessee

0:13:18 > 0:13:21# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:13:21 > 0:13:24# The way is long and hard, I know

0:13:24 > 0:13:28# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:13:28 > 0:13:31# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:13:45 > 0:13:48# Now here I sit in a tiny shack

0:13:48 > 0:13:51# With 13 others at my back

0:13:51 > 0:13:54# I've sent you word so all I can do

0:13:54 > 0:13:58# Is wait and wait and wait and wait

0:13:58 > 0:14:03# And wa-a-a-ait

0:14:03 > 0:14:07# And wait for you

0:14:07 > 0:14:11# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:14:11 > 0:14:14# The way is long and hard, I know

0:14:14 > 0:14:17# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:14:17 > 0:14:21# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:14:21 > 0:14:24# Come, love, come The road lies low

0:14:24 > 0:14:27# The way is long and hard, I know

0:14:27 > 0:14:30# Come, love, come The road lies free

0:14:30 > 0:14:39# I wait for you in Tennessee

0:14:41 > 0:14:44# Oh, oh-whoa-whoa-oh

0:14:44 > 0:14:46# Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh

0:14:46 > 0:14:51# Oh-oh-whoa-whoa-oh

0:14:51 > 0:14:56# Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-oh-ohh-ohhh

0:14:56 > 0:15:00# Oh-oh-ohh-oh-oh

0:15:00 > 0:15:03# I'll wait for you

0:15:03 > 0:15:07# I'll wait for you

0:15:07 > 0:15:11# I'll wait for you

0:15:11 > 0:15:14# I'll wait for you. #

0:15:14 > 0:15:17CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Some people give me the cassette of Celtic music, from Ireland,

0:15:24 > 0:15:28from...Scotland, and I was listening, I say,

0:15:28 > 0:15:33"Wow, this is so bizarre because if I take out the voices,

0:15:33 > 0:15:36"I can put my voice on the top of these melodies."

0:15:36 > 0:15:40And the instruments, I discovered later on that these instruments

0:15:40 > 0:15:43were very connected to African instruments.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45For example, we have the kora and the harp.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48When I hear the people in Ireland playing the bodhran

0:15:48 > 0:15:50and I hear the talking drum, it's all...

0:15:50 > 0:15:52The connection is there,

0:15:52 > 0:15:57so maybe we did live here or maybe you guys lived in Africa.

0:16:49 > 0:16:55HE SINGS IN OWN LANGUAGE
