0:01:40 > 0:01:44It's going to be a really tough job for the judges this year, I think.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47We have to stick to our base principles about looking at

0:01:47 > 0:01:49technique, looking at musicality,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52looking at communication.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57What I want to see is people loving what they do.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01I will definitely be judging them much more from the heart

0:02:01 > 0:02:03than the technical side of things,

0:13:09 > 0:13:12APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Well, Methodist College Girls' Choir - fantastic.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27And thank you for getting

0:13:27 > 0:13:30this 2012 Choir Of The Year Grand Final off to such a great start.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Mary, it's difficult going first, isn't it?

0:13:32 > 0:13:35What did you make of that performance?

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Have they set the standard for the other five, this afternoon?

0:13:38 > 0:13:40I'm so excited! LAUGHTER

0:13:40 > 0:13:43I really do think you are a fabulous choir.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45and what I love most

0:13:45 > 0:13:48is that, though some of the things you do are very difficult,

0:13:48 > 0:13:52you wear these difficulties really easily,

0:13:52 > 0:13:53and I congratulate you for that.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55One thing I'd like to see a little bit better done -

0:13:55 > 0:13:57that last piece, I think,

0:13:57 > 0:13:59it's very hard to balance all four parts.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03I would say sometimes the sopranos got a little enthusiastic

0:14:03 > 0:14:05with their top parts,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07and didn't quite let the younger voices with lower sounds

0:14:07 > 0:14:09come through to balance those chords.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12But, other than that, I would say that was a completely splendid

0:14:12 > 0:14:15and thoroughly enjoyable performance - well done.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17APPLAUSE

0:14:19 > 0:14:21Thank you, Mary.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24Now, Greg - what did you think of the choir's choice of programme?

0:14:24 > 0:14:27I really liked it. We're in competition here,

0:14:27 > 0:14:29and the choirs need to be bringing

0:14:29 > 0:14:32a balance of repertoire that shows off all these different facets

0:14:32 > 0:14:34of their ability.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36I found all three pieces really interesting.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39I thought they really took us on a little journey

0:14:39 > 0:14:41of what you can do as a choir,

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and how you communicate in the manner of your music-making,

0:14:44 > 0:14:46which I'm totally transfixed by.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Congratulations - I thought it was fantastic.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50APPLAUSE

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Thank you, judges. Some fantastic comments there.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- Josie, are you there? - Thanks, Tim. I am.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Now, Linda, Mary said that you made the difficult look easy. That's high praise, isn't it?

0:15:26 > 0:15:31That's very high praise indeed. I'm very pleased with that comment, because it was difficult.

0:15:31 > 0:15:36- Did it feel as easy as you guys made it look? - No, definitely not.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38Especially the last piece, it's very, very challenging.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42And we've worked so hard on it, so I'm glad we just got from start to finish.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Well done. To get to the final, it's so much hard work.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Are you able to let that go, Rachel, and just enjoy it when you perform?

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Yeah, definitely, it is a lot of hard work.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52We've rehearsed so much for it.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55But I know, personally, I really enjoyed their performance.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59We were all but nervous before we went on, but I felt that everyone did enjoy it, yes.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Greg seem to love it as well. What was going through your mind

0:16:02 > 0:16:04when the judges were passing their deliberation?

0:16:04 > 0:16:07It was just amazing to think of all the work we've put in

0:16:07 > 0:16:09and then to get such great comments,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45And this is the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48We're not professional musicians. We're not music graduates.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52There's an amazing variety of people in this choir, including...

0:16:52 > 0:16:55- Bookkeeper.- Software developer. - Radiographer.- IT.- Teacher.- Engineer.

0:17:09 > 0:17:14Our conductor is Debbie Walton, a musical perfectionist.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18My whole philosophy about singing is about telling a story.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Everybody is arriving from a different place

0:17:20 > 0:17:22and we're not arriving at a perfect chord.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26Yes, we want it to be musically brilliant and technical,

0:17:26 > 0:17:28but the story's got to be there.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33There is an age difference of 50 years in the choir.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Luckily, we're all old enough to go to the pub.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39The older people in the choir, they have a lot more experience,

0:17:39 > 0:17:41and I've learned so much from that.

0:17:41 > 0:17:46We do get on extremely well. We enjoy a beer after rehearsals, and that's a big part of it as well.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48I never thought the choir would get as far as this.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51It's just an absolute dream come true for everybody.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29- Do you feel, Simon, you achieve that?- I think so, yes. One of the things we pride ourselves on

0:28:29 > 0:28:32is the teamwork and the camaraderie in the choir,

0:28:32 > 0:28:35so the comments Greg made about us pulling together as a team were wonderful to hear,

0:37:58 > 0:38:04# That's if the choice were mine to make

0:38:04 > 0:38:11# But you can make decisions too

0:38:11 > 0:38:18# And you can have this heart to break

0:38:31 > 0:38:38- # And so it goes- And so it goes

0:38:38 > 0:38:45# And so it goes

0:38:47 > 0:38:56# And you're the only one

0:38:56 > 0:39:04# Who knows. #

0:39:06 > 0:39:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:39:17 > 0:39:20Les Sirenes and their conductor, Andrew Nunn.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29Well, I thought it was completely compelling, I have to say.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32I feel a little bit... Um, wobbly.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35Very, very good.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37We had fantastic, warm-toned,

0:39:37 > 0:39:40professionally skilled individual voices.

0:39:40 > 0:39:46It was the best legato singing of full-toned piano I've ever heard.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48It was fantastic. Well done, girls.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51APPLAUSE

0:39:54 > 0:39:58Thank you, Mary. Ruthie, I can see you're moved yourself. How did you feel about the performance?

0:39:58 > 0:40:04I felt exactly the same. I felt you had me on a soul level.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08You literally went into my core and I felt choked up.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12The second song, particularly, because the blend of your voices

0:40:12 > 0:40:18was so beautiful that I just was totally yours.

0:40:20 > 0:40:27The first piece had so much humour and was a wonderful acting piece.

0:40:27 > 0:40:32I thought you chose perfectly for these fantastic women.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34Fabulous. Thank you, Ruthie.

0:40:34 > 0:40:38APPLAUSE

0:41:04 > 0:41:07- Is there higher praise for a choir? - I don't think so.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09We had every intention of doing that.

0:41:09 > 0:41:14We wanted to really reach inside every member of the audience in the Festival Hall this evening

0:41:14 > 0:41:16and really touch a heartstring

0:41:16 > 0:41:18and tell them the story that we are telling.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23Yeah, we did. Absolutely, I think that's important.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Aileen, you came in here as the wild card.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27Does that affect the attitude you came with?

0:41:27 > 0:41:32Oh, no, we're all wild girls, so I guess wild card suits us well.

0:41:32 > 0:41:37No, we're all about the fun and the music, so, we've put our all

0:41:37 > 0:41:41into everything we've done tonight, so hopefully it will pay off.

0:42:48 > 0:42:53passed down from years and years of The Gargoyles, and here we have

0:46:42 > 0:46:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:46:51 > 0:46:54I'm Henry de Berker and I sing tenor in the Oxford Gargoyles.

0:46:54 > 0:46:59# One, two, three, four, here we go Whoa, whoa. #

0:46:59 > 0:47:03Singing and rugby are two main focuses of my attention

0:47:03 > 0:47:06away from the work here at Oxford.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08I was just making a tackle in a game and the person

0:47:08 > 0:47:12I was tackling tried to throw me off with their forearm and it just went

0:47:12 > 0:47:17into my throat and forced my windpipe closed, I think, essentially.

0:47:17 > 0:47:19It was a very unpleasant feeling.

0:47:19 > 0:47:22Playing scrum half I do a lot of shouting,

0:47:22 > 0:47:24so I started shouting at people again and it didn't really

0:47:24 > 0:47:29come out at all and what did come out sounded very strange

0:47:29 > 0:47:32and I thought I should probably take myself to a hospital.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35It revealed that there was a small haemorrhage on my right vocal cord

0:47:35 > 0:47:38and I realised at that point there was a chance

0:47:38 > 0:47:41I was going to miss the Grand Final of The Choir Of The Year

0:47:41 > 0:47:43and I said, "You know, I've got to sing in two and a half weeks.

0:47:43 > 0:47:47"What do you think my chances are, basically, of being able to do that?"

0:47:47 > 0:47:49And she looked pretty worried.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53Obviously I'd really love to be rehearsing right now,

0:47:53 > 0:47:55but I think the best thing is for me to rest my voice

0:47:55 > 0:47:59and on the day I'll be there on the stage just giving everything I have.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02There's eight minutes of singing. I'll be there.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05I'll give it my all and hopefully it will be absolutely fine.

0:48:08 > 0:48:10# Ain't no mountain high enough

0:48:10 > 0:48:11# Ain't no valley low enough

0:48:11 > 0:48:13# Ain't no river wide enough

0:48:15 > 0:48:17# Ain't no mountain high enough

0:48:17 > 0:48:18# Ain't no valley low enough

0:48:25 > 0:48:29# Ain't no valley low enough

0:48:29 > 0:48:32# Ain't no river wide enough

0:48:32 > 0:48:36# To keep me from getting to you, babe

0:48:36 > 0:48:38# He walks away

0:48:38 > 0:48:40# Sun goes down

0:48:40 > 0:48:44# He takes the day but I am grown

0:48:44 > 0:48:47# And in your way in this blue shade

0:48:47 > 0:48:52# My tears dry on their own, yeah

0:49:15 > 0:49:17# Touching you...

0:49:19 > 0:49:21# You're touching me...

0:49:22 > 0:49:26# I'm touching you, ah

0:49:26 > 0:49:28# While you're touching me

0:49:28 > 0:49:30# We need to sing, oh, no

0:49:30 > 0:49:32# I believe in a thing called love

0:49:32 > 0:49:33# Listen to the rhythm of my heart

0:49:33 > 0:49:36# There's a chance we could make it now

0:49:36 > 0:49:37# We'll be rocking till the sun goes down

0:50:01 > 0:50:05# Just know that you're not in this thing alone

0:50:05 > 0:50:08# There's a place in me that you can call home

0:50:08 > 0:50:12# Whenever you feel like we're growing apart

0:50:12 > 0:50:19# Let's just go back, back, back Back, back to the start

0:51:40 > 0:51:41# In the moonlight! #

0:51:43 > 0:51:45CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:51:52 > 0:51:55The Oxford Gargoyles and their musical director Euan Campbell.

0:51:55 > 0:51:59Ruthie, quite a different programme to what we've seen already

0:51:59 > 0:52:01this afternoon.

0:52:01 > 0:52:02- Did it deliver for you?- Yes, it did.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05I thought it was young and infectious.

0:52:05 > 0:52:09I loved the fact that everybody had a chance to shine.

0:52:09 > 0:52:12I loved that you had really gone to town with choreography as well.

0:52:12 > 0:52:16- That pleased me greatly. - Thank you, Ruthie.

0:52:19 > 0:52:21Greg, speaking of that movement and choreography,

0:52:21 > 0:52:23they used a lot of it in their programme.

0:52:23 > 0:52:24What about the vocal quality?

0:52:24 > 0:52:28Everyone should join a choir and do that kind of rep in that way.

0:52:28 > 0:52:30I just need to impress upon the audience

0:52:30 > 0:52:33how difficult it is, especially for drum and bass singers

0:52:33 > 0:52:35in this kind of room, to be able to communicate

0:52:35 > 0:52:39with that clarity and that kind of volume, which he did so well

0:52:39 > 0:52:42without the use of microphones, I was really impressed. I love it.

0:52:45 > 0:52:46Thank you, judges. And once again,

0:52:46 > 0:52:49please show your appreciation for the Oxford Gargoyles.

0:52:49 > 0:52:51CHEERING

0:52:56 > 0:52:59I think some members of the Oxford Gargoyles have joined Josie,

0:52:59 > 0:53:01so let's go backstage for their thoughts.

0:53:01 > 0:53:04Normally I ask the choir if they enjoyed their performance,

0:53:04 > 0:53:06but I think we can see the all had a blast.

0:53:06 > 0:53:08We felt like we were at a party.

0:53:08 > 0:53:10You're the smallest choir in this competition.

0:53:10 > 0:53:15- Do you feel you have a David and Goliath style advantage?- I think so.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18We do a lot of tight harmonies, really technical stuff,

0:53:18 > 0:53:21and I think we tried to show that in both styles today.

0:53:21 > 0:53:22It was so much fun.

0:53:22 > 0:53:25It was actually the last time we're going to sing together as a group.

0:53:25 > 0:53:28- But, yeah, so much fun.- I could sense that you took advantage

0:53:28 > 0:53:30of the size and I was going to say that, obviously,

0:53:30 > 0:53:34because you're in a university choir, the turnover is regular.

0:53:34 > 0:53:36Yeah, it happens every year.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39There's actually a new batch of Gargoyles waiting in the wings

0:53:39 > 0:53:41to take over, so like Euan said,

0:53:41 > 0:53:43it's the last time we're going to sing together.

0:53:43 > 0:53:47But I don't think I could've found a better way to go out, to be honest.

0:53:47 > 0:53:49How did it feel, Henry, knowing that was your last time together?

0:53:49 > 0:53:52These guys are leaving and it's going to be really sad.

0:53:52 > 0:53:55I'm staying for another year and we're going to have a fantastic year,

0:53:55 > 0:53:58but like Ang said, you couldn't really pick a better setting

0:53:58 > 0:54:00in which to have your final memories of being in a group.

0:54:00 > 0:54:03Absolutely. I'm sure it's been a privilege singing together.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07Thank you, because we really enjoyed that. It was infectious. Tim.

0:54:07 > 0:54:10Thank you, Josie, and thanks to the Oxford Gargoyles.

1:04:22 > 1:04:24CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:04:35 > 1:04:38The Lindley Junior School Choir there, and well done to all of you

1:04:38 > 1:04:42for a fantastic job. Mary, this is our youngest choir tonight.

1:04:42 > 1:04:45How did the programme work for you?

1:04:45 > 1:04:48I thought the programme was fantastic and it's completely

1:04:48 > 1:04:51irrelevant in a sense that they are our youngest choir, because I think

1:04:51 > 1:04:53they can hold their heads up high.

1:04:53 > 1:04:56I think there was no compromise about the difficulty of the music.

1:04:56 > 1:04:59There was some very complicated rhythmic stuff. I thought

1:04:59 > 1:05:01you were fantastic, really delicate, really sensitive and what

1:05:01 > 1:05:06I liked most is that this is a huge space and it's incredibly

1:05:06 > 1:05:11tempting to force the sound into this great big hall.

1:05:11 > 1:05:17And you resisted, and it was so delicate and you drew us to you.

1:05:17 > 1:05:20Really, really well done. Thank you.

1:05:20 > 1:05:21APPLAUSE

1:05:26 > 1:05:27Greg, if I can come to you.

1:05:27 > 1:05:30This is a big choir of young voices, 60 in all,

1:05:30 > 1:05:33a challenge to keep all of those together and to blend the sound.

1:05:33 > 1:05:35How do you feel they did?

1:05:35 > 1:05:38They did fantastically well and, to be honest,

1:05:38 > 1:05:40that's testament to their musical leadership, so I think we should

1:05:40 > 1:05:44give another round of applause to your conductor and your accompanist.

1:05:44 > 1:05:46APPLAUSE

1:05:51 > 1:05:52As Mary was saying,

1:05:52 > 1:05:55it's so tempting for you to force your voices,

1:05:55 > 1:05:56especially at your young age.

1:05:56 > 1:06:00I have worked with a lot of children's choirs and often times

1:06:00 > 1:06:02that time is spent actually pulling back from bad habits

1:06:02 > 1:06:05that have already occurred, and I just love the fact that such good

1:06:05 > 1:06:09technical grounding is happening in this choir at such a young age.

1:06:09 > 1:06:11Let's hope that spreads all the way through the UK.

1:06:11 > 1:06:14I thought it was a wonderful performance

1:06:14 > 1:06:16and I think you should be incredibly proud of yourselves.

1:06:16 > 1:06:21Fantastic. Let's hear it once again for the Lindley Junior School choir.

1:06:32 > 1:06:34but what do the Lindley Junior School Choir

1:06:34 > 1:06:37and the conductor think of their performance?

1:06:37 > 1:06:38Well, let's find out.

1:06:38 > 1:06:43Alison, Greg recognising there how important what YOU do is.

1:06:43 > 1:06:46It must be very gratifying on a day like today.

1:06:46 > 1:06:47Extremely gratifying. Thanks, Greg.

1:06:47 > 1:06:50It's really good to have your work recognised.

1:06:50 > 1:06:52Obviously, I work with very talented children,

1:06:52 > 1:06:55but to have my part acknowledged in it is just lovely.

1:06:55 > 1:06:58Tom, how did your performance go for you?

1:06:58 > 1:07:01I think it went really, really well and I'm really proud of all of us

1:07:01 > 1:07:03because we put in a lot of work.

1:07:03 > 1:07:04Lucy, do you enjoy being in a choir?

1:07:04 > 1:07:07Would you recommend it to all children?

1:07:07 > 1:07:10Yes, I would recommend it to all children because

1:07:10 > 1:07:13it's a wonderful thing to do and everybody gets into it really well.

1:07:13 > 1:07:15And when we sing something like this,

1:07:15 > 1:07:18it's amazing the opportunity we get.

1:07:18 > 1:07:22Wonderful! And on top of all of that, you give us all a thrill as well.

1:07:22 > 1:07:24Nicely done. Thank you very much. Tim.

1:16:14 > 1:16:17I still get the chance to farm.

1:16:17 > 1:16:20It gives me a chance to be in the peace and quiet and relax.

1:16:22 > 1:16:25Part of the farm is here between the sea and the mountains,

1:16:25 > 1:16:31you can see Snowdon behind me over there and I feel very lucky to be

1:16:31 > 1:16:32able to live in this part of the world.

1:16:32 > 1:16:35I hope we can live here for ever.

1:16:36 > 1:16:38Farming is in my blood,

1:16:38 > 1:16:41but thanks to Kevin I think singing is in my blood now as well.

1:17:50 > 1:17:54APPLAUSE

1:18:01 > 1:18:04Thank you, or should I say "diolch i chi gyd"?

1:18:04 > 1:18:07Ysgol Glanaethwy Senior Choir.

1:18:07 > 1:18:10Four pieces in their programme and a variety of styles. Now, Ruthie,

1:18:10 > 1:18:15as a West End star yourself, you're used to combining drama and music.

1:18:15 > 1:18:18What did you make of that very theatrical performance from Ysgol Glanaethwy?

1:18:18 > 1:18:21I think it is wonderful that you took something so simple

1:18:21 > 1:18:26as coloured gloves and you have given your whole piece something

1:18:26 > 1:18:30very, very dynamic which is wonderful to watch.

1:18:30 > 1:18:33But it did not take away from the vocals, which was great.

1:18:33 > 1:18:37Each and every one of you was so committed that you had this sense

1:18:37 > 1:18:40of, you created your magic in your space

1:18:40 > 1:18:42and I could not look down to write my notes

1:18:42 > 1:18:49because you were defying me to look down, you know, you had my gaze

1:18:49 > 1:18:54and I thought it was a fierce and strong and powerful performance.

1:18:54 > 1:18:55Really wonderful.

1:18:55 > 1:18:58APPLAUSE

1:19:03 > 1:19:08Greg, a 70-strong choir who were all obviously enjoying time on stage.

1:19:08 > 1:19:12- Did you enjoy?- I did, it was a new sound for us, wasn't it?

1:19:12 > 1:19:15We had six very distinctive sounds and this was one,

1:19:15 > 1:19:17and what a great one to finish on.

1:19:17 > 1:19:20It was bright and vibrant and elemental at points.

1:19:20 > 1:19:22It was really moving.

1:19:22 > 1:19:25There were times when I just wrote down one or two technical things.

1:19:25 > 1:19:28As with all the six choirs, we have been very positive with our

1:19:28 > 1:19:31immediate comments up here, but I thought some of the Tippett,

1:19:31 > 1:19:35although really nicely structured, it kind of drew attention to certain technical inadequacies

1:19:35 > 1:19:38in the choir, but these are tiny things and I am only

1:19:38 > 1:19:41daring to say that because I want you to know how much I love you.

1:19:41 > 1:19:43I thought it was a fantastic performance

1:19:43 > 1:19:44and what a way to finish.

1:19:44 > 1:19:46Thank you very much.

1:19:46 > 1:19:49APPLAUSE

1:19:56 > 1:19:59Thank you to Ysgol Glanaethwy and Kevin Roberts there.

1:19:59 > 1:20:01Before we go to Josie,

1:20:01 > 1:20:05Mary, this would be a great opportunity to get some more feedback from you.

1:20:05 > 1:20:09Could you sum up your impressions of the six choirs in the final for us tonight?

1:20:09 > 1:20:13I think it has been a fantastic competition and I cannot remember

1:20:13 > 1:20:19a time when the musical standard was so high and yet the musical variety

1:20:19 > 1:20:23was so great and I think that is fantastic for choral singing.

1:20:23 > 1:20:26It is wonderful to feel that people are breaking out of what

1:20:26 > 1:20:30I think used to be restraints and constraints in their singing,

1:20:30 > 1:20:34and it is wonderful to see people with total physical commitment,

1:20:34 > 1:20:38because of course with that physical commitment comes much better singing.

1:20:38 > 1:20:40I find it absolutely fantastic.

1:20:40 > 1:20:44APPLAUSE

1:20:46 > 1:20:48Thank you, Mary. And thank you, judges.

1:20:48 > 1:20:51I feel you have a difficult task ahead of you.

1:20:51 > 1:20:54Thank you, too, of course to our last finalists this evening.

1:20:54 > 1:20:59- Josie, do you have some Ysgol Glanaethwy people with you? - Glad to say I do, Tim.

1:20:59 > 1:21:02Kevin, Ruthie could not make notes because she could not take her

1:21:02 > 1:21:04eyes off you, was that part of your game plan?

1:21:04 > 1:21:09It is such a positive comment to have because musical theatre

1:21:09 > 1:21:14needs that kind of reaction from the audience as well, so we had

1:21:14 > 1:21:16a really good time up there.

1:21:16 > 1:21:20Sometimes with a competition you be worried when you are on last,

1:21:20 > 1:21:22but they had great fun and that came over.

1:21:22 > 1:21:25You are a performance school so it was always going to be about the showmanship.

1:21:25 > 1:21:28Yes, we just love performing and showing everybody

1:21:28 > 1:21:30what we can do and dancing and singing.

1:21:30 > 1:21:33Does that ability in all of the disciplines that go along with

1:21:33 > 1:21:36performing help you to have the boldness to sing in Welsh

1:21:36 > 1:21:39and convey that meaning to non-Welsh speakers?

1:21:39 > 1:21:41We believe as a choir that singing in Welsh is a big part

1:21:41 > 1:21:47of our tradition, we try and bring as much of that as we can.

1:21:47 > 1:21:52It was absolutely brilliant. Back to you, Tim.

1:21:52 > 1:21:55You seems to have a ball back there this evening. What has the atmosphere been like?

1:21:55 > 1:21:57It has been just brilliant.

1:21:57 > 1:22:00I think everybody has had a really good time today

1:22:00 > 1:22:02and I think that has come across in their performance

1:22:02 > 1:22:06and the chats I have had with them backstage. And that is what stood out for me this year.

1:22:06 > 1:22:08Everyone upped the ante in terms of the performance,

1:22:08 > 1:22:10it was all very theatrical.

1:22:10 > 1:22:13There was something to remember in all of their performances,

1:22:13 > 1:22:16as well as the musicianship really being there.

1:22:16 > 1:22:18It is a thrilling competition time after time

1:22:18 > 1:22:23and I am glad, everybody says this, but I am glad I am not on the jury

1:22:23 > 1:22:25because I would not know who to choose.

1:22:25 > 1:22:28Absolutely, I could not agree with you more.

1:22:28 > 1:22:30Josie will be joining me on stage for the announcement

1:22:30 > 1:22:34of the winner of Choir Of The Year 2012 very shortly.

1:22:34 > 1:22:38While we await the jury's decision we have a treat in store for you.

1:22:38 > 1:22:41Our guest artists tonight are an internationally claimed vocal group

1:22:41 > 1:22:44who are legendary in the world of a cappella singing.

1:22:44 > 1:22:48For almost five decades they have been setting the standard of vocal agility

1:22:48 > 1:22:51and pushing the boundaries of musical innovation.

1:22:51 > 1:22:54The line-up has changed many times over the years,

1:22:54 > 1:22:57but the latest group of talented young voices continue to

1:22:57 > 1:23:00uphold the tradition of the original 1960s group.

1:23:00 > 1:23:04They are of course, and I'm very excited, the Swingle Singers.
