0:11:26 > 0:11:28What a lovely song that is,
0:11:28 > 0:11:31beautifully sung there by the Inverclyde Junior Choir.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33With its message of peace,
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Andy Beck's song seems to strike the right note for Christmas Eve.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40Our next carol also has the theme of peace.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44It was first sung on Christmas Eve, 1818,
0:11:44 > 0:11:48in the Church of St Nicholas in the village of Oberndorf in Austria.
0:11:48 > 0:11:52With its gentle rocking melody and simple message,
0:11:52 > 0:11:55it's since become the world's most popular carol.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59It is, of course, Silent Night.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03# Silent night
0:12:03 > 0:12:07# Holy night
0:12:07 > 0:12:11# Sleeps the world
0:12:11 > 0:12:16# Hid from sight
0:12:16 > 0:12:25# Mary and Joseph in stable bare
0:12:25 > 0:12:29# Watch o'er the child
0:12:29 > 0:12:33# Beloved and fair
0:12:33 > 0:12:43# Sleep in heavenly rest
0:12:43 > 0:12:51# Sleep in heavenly rest
0:12:52 > 0:12:56# Silent night
0:12:56 > 0:13:01# Holy night
0:13:01 > 0:13:10# Shepherds first saw the sight
0:13:10 > 0:13:18# Glory straight from heaven above
0:13:18 > 0:13:27# Heavenly hosts sing hallelujah
0:13:27 > 0:13:36# Christ the Saviour is born
0:13:36 > 0:13:42# Christ the Saviour is born

0:14:21 > 0:14:30# Saviour, since thou art born
0:14:30 > 0:14:38# Saviour, since thou art born. #
0:14:41 > 0:14:46One way or another, everyone's going to Bethlehem tonight -
0:14:46 > 0:14:53Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, you and me.
0:14:53 > 0:14:59For Bethlehem is more than just the town on the outskirts of Jerusalem
0:14:59 > 0:15:04where Jesus was born, where Mary gave birth to the eternal Son of God -
0:15:04 > 0:15:10it is the place where God shares our human life,
0:15:10 > 0:15:14where we can come close to God and gaze upon him.
0:15:14 > 0:15:18So where do we find OUR Bethlehem,
0:15:18 > 0:15:21our place of encounter with God?
0:15:21 > 0:15:23Let me suggest two places.
0:15:24 > 0:15:32We find our Bethlehem where human love is at its purest and best,
0:15:32 > 0:15:36as in the love of Mary and Joseph for the Christ child,
0:15:36 > 0:15:43a self-giving, self-denying love that we believe has its origin in the heart of God.
0:15:44 > 0:15:50And we find our Bethlehem among those for whom life is not comfortable,
0:15:50 > 0:15:57but is hard, as it was for Mary, Joseph and Jesus that first Christmas.
0:15:58 > 0:16:06When we stop in our busy lives and do something to help those for whom life is a real struggle,
0:16:06 > 0:16:11then we discover that we too have arrived at Bethlehem
0:16:11 > 0:16:16and in the company of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men
0:16:16 > 0:16:21find ourselves gazing on the very face of God,
0:16:21 > 0:16:27so come, all ye faithful, come to Bethlehem.
0:16:34 > 0:16:39# O come all ye faithful
0:16:39 > 0:16:43# Joyful and triumphant
0:16:43 > 0:16:46# O come ye
0:16:46 > 0:16:53# O come ye to Bethlehem
0:16:53 > 0:16:58# Come and behold him
0:16:58 > 0:17:02# Born the King of angels
0:17:02 > 0:17:07# O come, let us adore him!
0:17:07 > 0:17:12# O come, let us adore him!
0:17:12 > 0:17:19# O come, let us adore him
0:17:19 > 0:17:24# Christ the Lord!
0:17:26 > 0:17:31# Sing, choirs of angels
0:17:31 > 0:17:36# Sing in exultation
0:17:36 > 0:17:44# Sing, all ye citizens of heav'n above
0:17:46 > 0:17:55# Glory to God in the highest
0:17:55 > 0:18:00# O come, let us adore him!
0:18:00 > 0:18:06# O come, let us adore him!
0:18:06 > 0:18:11# O come, let us adore him
0:18:11 > 0:18:18# Christ the Lord!
0:18:19 > 0:18:24# Yea, Lord, we greet thee
0:18:24 > 0:18:29# Born this happy morning
0:18:29 > 0:18:35# O Jesus, for evermore
0:18:35 > 0:18:39# be thy name adored
0:18:39 > 0:18:45# Word of the Father
0:18:45 > 0:18:49# Now in flesh appearing
0:18:49 > 0:18:55# O come, let us adore him!
0:18:55 > 0:19:00# O come, let us adore him!
0:19:00 > 0:19:06# O come, let us adore him!
0:19:06 > 0:19:15# Christ the Lord! #
0:19:17 > 0:19:21"O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant."
0:19:21 > 0:19:24What a magnificent sound to welcome Christmas.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27I can still hear it reverberating around the whole abbey.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29Yes, Christmas is here.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31On behalf of us all here in Paisley Abbey,
0:19:31 > 0:19:35may I wish you, wherever you are, a very happy Christmas.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37It's a time for rejoicing
0:19:37 > 0:19:42and the Inverclyde Junior Choir are certainly in a celebratory mood.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46Here they are with a new, exciting, up-tempo setting of the familiar words -
0:19:46 > 0:19:49unto us a child is born.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57# Unto us a child is born
0:19:57 > 0:20:00# Unto us a son is given
0:20:00 > 0:20:03# He shall reign in all the earth
0:20:03 > 0:20:05# He will be called Emmanuel
0:20:05 > 0:20:08# Unto us a child is born
0:20:08 > 0:20:11# Unto us a son is given
0:20:11 > 0:20:14# He shall reign in all the earth
0:20:14 > 0:20:17# He will be called Emmanuel
0:20:17 > 0:20:22# Angel voices sing
0:20:22 > 0:20:27# Hallelujahs ring
0:20:27 > 0:20:29# For today in Bethlehem
0:20:29 > 0:20:32# The love of God has come to me

0:22:41 > 0:22:44On the floor the parcels are piled
0:22:44 > 0:22:47The light of the star is reflected
0:22:47 > 0:22:49In the eyes of a happy child
0:22:49 > 0:22:51A star shone out at Bethlehem
0:22:51 > 0:22:53So wonderful and rare
0:22:53 > 0:22:55It showed the way to the baby
0:22:55 > 0:22:57In the stable cold and bare
0:22:57 > 0:22:59It showed the way to the wise men
0:22:59 > 0:23:00Who hoped to find a king
0:23:00 > 0:23:02But all they found in that stable
0:23:02 > 0:23:03Was a little baby thing
0:23:03 > 0:23:06There's an angel on the Christmas tree
0:23:06 > 0:23:08Dressed in shining white
0:23:08 > 0:23:11With arms outstretched to greet us all
