0:05:18 > 0:05:23Four years ago, only one child on the Raploch council estate at the

0:05:23 > 0:05:27foot of the Castle here in Stirling was learning a musical instrument.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Then the Scottish Arts Council set up a pioneering musical

0:05:31 > 0:05:34education system in Raploch, based on the highly successful

0:05:34 > 0:05:39El Sistema project established in Venezuela in 1975.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Now, four years on, there are 450 kids who are not only playing

0:05:43 > 0:05:47the instruments, but playing them as part of an orchestra.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50The main orchestra is called Big Noise.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Here they are joining in a carol that reminds us

0:05:53 > 0:05:56of the place where Christmas, in a sense, began.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57O Little Town Of Bethlehem.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Christmas is never where you expect it.

0:08:25 > 0:08:31Not in the big house with the fire lit and the presents rustling, nor

0:08:31 > 0:08:36when the lights awaken the tree and you should feel something and don't.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41Christmas happens in an unimaginable place -

0:08:41 > 0:08:44in a city store with canned music,

0:08:44 > 0:08:48in the street with a stranger and a white cyclamen,

0:08:48 > 0:08:53or when the silence tightens the cry in your throat.

0:08:54 > 0:09:00Then Christmas comes, never where you expect it

0:09:00 > 0:09:02and always in Bethlehem.

0:09:12 > 0:09:18# As I walked down the road at set of sun

0:09:18 > 0:09:26# The lambs were coming homewards, one by one

0:09:26 > 0:09:33# I heard a sheep bell softly calling them

0:09:33 > 0:09:41# Along the little road to Bethlehem

0:09:45 > 0:09:52# Beside an open door, as I drew nigh

0:09:52 > 0:09:59# I heard sweet Mary sing a lullaby

0:09:59 > 0:10:06# She sang about the lambs at close of day

0:10:06 > 0:10:14# And rocked her tiny King among the hay

0:10:19 > 0:10:26# Across the air the silver sheep bell rang

0:10:26 > 0:10:34# "The lambs are coming home" sweet Mary sang

0:10:34 > 0:10:41# Your Star of gold, your Star of gold

0:10:41 > 0:10:47# Is shining in the sky

0:10:47 > 0:10:55# So sleep my little King, go lullaby

0:11:02 > 0:11:09# As I walked down the road at set of sun,

0:11:09 > 0:11:15# The lambs were coming homewards, one by one

0:11:15 > 0:11:23# I heard a sheep bell softly calling them

0:11:23 > 0:11:29# Along the little road to Bethlehem. #

0:11:46 > 0:11:50This is the only surviving original manuscript

0:11:50 > 0:11:53of the world's most popular carol.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57It was heard for the first time on Christmas Eve 1818,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00when it was performed at Midnight Mass in

0:12:00 > 0:12:04St Nicholas Church in the little Austrian village of Oberndorf.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07It was sung by the choir director Franz Gruber,

0:12:07 > 0:12:09who had composed the tune.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12He was accompanied on the guitar by the assistant pastor,

0:12:12 > 0:12:16Father Joseph Mohr, who had written the words.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Little did they realise that their simple carol,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22with its gently rocking rhythm and simple message,

0:12:22 > 0:12:26would wing its way into the hearts of people throughout the world.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Now translated into hundreds of languages,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33it is sung by untold millions every Christmas Eve -

0:12:33 > 0:12:36in the smallest chapel to the grandest cathedral.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39It is, of course, Silent Night.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51# Silent night

0:12:51 > 0:12:56# Holy night

0:12:56 > 0:13:00# All is calm

0:13:00 > 0:13:03# All is bright

0:13:03 > 0:13:07# Round yon virgin

0:13:07 > 0:13:11# Mother and child

0:13:11 > 0:13:17# Holy infant, so tender and mild

0:13:18 > 0:13:26# Sleep in heavenly peace

0:13:26 > 0:13:34# Sleep in heavenly peace

0:13:38 > 0:13:43# Silent night

0:13:43 > 0:13:47# Holy night

0:13:47 > 0:13:55# Shepherds first saw the light

0:13:58 > 0:14:06# Heard resounding clear and long

0:14:09 > 0:14:17# Far and near the angel song

0:14:19 > 0:14:27# Christ the Redeemer is here

0:14:30 > 0:14:38# Christ the Redeemer is here

0:14:48 > 0:14:52# Silent night

0:14:52 > 0:14:57# Holy night

0:14:57 > 0:15:01# Son of God

0:15:01 > 0:15:04# O how bright

0:15:04 > 0:15:12# Love is smiling from thy face

0:15:12 > 0:15:19# Strikes for us now the hour of grace

0:15:19 > 0:15:27#Saviour, since thou art born

0:15:27 > 0:15:35# Saviour since thou art born. #

0:15:44 > 0:15:46The midnight hour has come.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50From all of us here in Stirling, may I wish you all wherever you are

0:15:50 > 0:15:53a happy and peaceful Christmas.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57Last month, I was in China as the Chinese Church celebrated

0:15:57 > 0:16:00the printing of the 100 millionth Bible

0:16:00 > 0:16:03at the Amity Printing Press in Nanjing.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07This occasion marked a significant landmark for Christians in China,

0:16:07 > 0:16:11who despite past hardships are today witnessing huge numbers

0:16:11 > 0:16:14of people coming to faith and joining the church,

0:16:14 > 0:16:18as they are in other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23The good news that begins with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem,

0:16:23 > 0:16:28when God came to us, a tiny, weak and vulnerable baby

0:16:28 > 0:16:30born to his young mother Mary,

0:16:30 > 0:16:34that good news of forgiveness, reconciliation

0:16:34 > 0:16:38and fullness of life has become rooted in cultures and communities

0:16:38 > 0:16:42all around the world, passed on from generation to generation.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48This Christmas, as we rejoice once more that God showed his great love

0:16:48 > 0:16:53for the world when the Christ Child was born in Bethlehem, we give

0:16:53 > 0:16:56thanks in the midst of our troubles and anxieties, that the hope

0:16:56 > 0:17:00of salvation offered through Him is a light that shines in the darkness,

0:17:00 > 0:17:04news of great joy, not only for us here in Scotland,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06but for all the world.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13MUSIC: "Joy To The World"

0:17:15 > 0:17:19# Joy to the world the Lord is come

0:17:19 > 0:17:25# Let Earth receive her King

0:17:25 > 0:17:31# Let every heart prepare Him room

0:17:31 > 0:17:33# And heaven and nature sing

0:17:33 > 0:17:36# And heaven and nature sing

0:17:36 > 0:17:42# And heaven and heaven and nature sing

0:17:42 > 0:17:47# Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns

0:17:47 > 0:17:52# Let men their songs employ

0:17:55 > 0:18:01# While fields and floods rock hills and plains

0:18:01 > 0:18:04# Repeat the sounding joy

0:18:04 > 0:18:06# Repeat the sounding joy

0:18:06 > 0:18:11# Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

0:18:22 > 0:18:26# And makes the nations prove

0:18:29 > 0:18:35# The glories of his righteousness

0:18:35 > 0:18:38# And wonders of his love

0:18:38 > 0:18:41# And wonders of his love

0:19:08 > 0:19:10# And heaven and nature sing

0:19:10 > 0:19:16# And heaven and heaven and nature sing

0:19:20 > 0:19:28# And heaven and heaven and nature sing. #

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Once there was a snowman

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Who stood outside the door

0:19:38 > 0:19:40He wished that he could come inside

0:19:40 > 0:19:42And run about the floor

0:19:42 > 0:19:44He wished that he could warm himself

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Beside the fire, so red

0:19:46 > 0:19:48He wished that he could climb

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Upon the big white bed.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52So he called to the North Wind

0:19:52 > 0:19:54"Come and help me, pray

0:19:54 > 0:19:56"For I'm completely frozen

0:19:56 > 0:19:58"Standing here all day."

0:19:58 > 0:20:00So the North Wind came along

0:20:00 > 0:20:03And blew him in the door

0:20:03 > 0:20:05And now there's nothing left

0:20:05 > 0:20:07But a puddle on the floor!

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Well, that was great fun.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31And I've feeling the Big Noise thought so, too.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34But if you're a singer rather than an instrumentalist,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37then this next carol is the one for you.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41O Holy Night is a perennial Christmas favourite and just about

0:22:41 > 0:22:45every singer you can think of has recorded it. Especially the tenors.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48But Adolphe Adam's famous melody also has a unique

0:22:48 > 0:22:50place in musical history.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53When the Canadian inventor Reginald Fessenden broadcast

0:22:53 > 0:22:57the world's first radio programme on Christmas Eve in 1906,

0:22:57 > 0:23:01the first carol to be performed was O Holy Night.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10# O holy night

0:23:10 > 0:23:14# The stars are brightly shining

0:23:14 > 0:23:20# It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth

0:23:23 > 0:23:26# Long lay the world

0:23:26 > 0:23:29# In sin and error pining

0:23:29 > 0:23:32# Till He appeared

0:23:32 > 0:23:36# And the soul felt its worth

0:23:36 > 0:23:40# A thrill of hope

0:23:40 > 0:23:43# The weary world rejoices

0:23:43 > 0:23:45# For yonder breaks

0:23:45 > 0:23:48# A new and glorious morn

0:23:48 > 0:23:54# Fall on your knees

0:23:54 > 0:24:02# Oh, hear the angel voices

0:24:02 > 0:24:07# O night divine

0:24:07 > 0:24:15# O night when Christ was born

0:24:15 > 0:24:21# O night divine

0:24:21 > 0:24:28# O night divine O night, O night divine

0:24:43 > 0:24:46# Led by the light

0:24:46 > 0:24:50# Of faith serenely beaming

0:24:50 > 0:24:53# With glowing hearts

0:24:53 > 0:24:56# By His cradle we stand

0:24:59 > 0:25:02# So, led by light

0:25:02 > 0:25:06# Of a star sweetly gleaming

0:25:06 > 0:25:12# Here came the wise men from the Orient land

0:25:13 > 0:25:16# The King of Kings

0:25:16 > 0:25:20# Lay thus in lowly manger

0:25:20 > 0:25:23# In all our trials

0:25:23 > 0:25:26# Born to be our friend

0:25:26 > 0:25:33# He knows our need

0:25:33 > 0:25:39# To our weakness no stranger

0:25:39 > 0:25:45# Behold your King

0:25:45 > 0:25:51# Before Him lowly bend

0:25:53 > 0:26:00# Behold your King

0:26:00 > 0:26:08# Before Him lowly bend. #

0:26:17 > 0:26:18O Holy Night.

0:26:18 > 0:26:23What a marvellous melody, beautifully sung by Iain Milne.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27In the Old Testament, the prophet Micah foretold that a Messiah would

0:26:27 > 0:26:32come from the small and seemingly insignificant town of Bethlehem.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35He added that would be highly honoured around the world,

0:26:35 > 0:26:37and would be a source of peace.

0:26:37 > 0:26:42He's Juliet Cadzow to read a poem on the theme of peace.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45It was written by the American poet Maya Angelou,

0:26:45 > 0:26:50specially for the 2005 White House Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52It's called Amazing Peace.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Thunder rumbles in the mountain passes

0:26:57 > 0:27:01And lightning rattles the eaves of our houses

0:27:01 > 0:27:05Flood waters await us in our avenues

0:27:05 > 0:27:10Snow falls upon snow, falls upon snow

0:27:10 > 0:27:13To avalanche over the unprotected villages

0:27:13 > 0:27:19The sky slips low and grey and threatening

0:27:19 > 0:27:21We question ourselves

0:27:21 > 0:27:25What have we done to so affront nature?

0:27:25 > 0:27:27We worry, God

0:27:27 > 0:27:31Are you there? Are you there, really?

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Does the covenant you made with us still hold?

0:27:36 > 0:27:42Into this climate of fear and apprehension, Christmas enters

0:27:42 > 0:27:48Streaming lights of joy, ringing bells of hope

0:27:48 > 0:27:50And singing carols of forgiveness

0:27:50 > 0:27:54High up in the bright air

0:27:54 > 0:27:58The world in encouraged to come away from rancour

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Come the way of friendship

0:28:01 > 0:28:04It is the Glad season

0:28:04 > 0:28:07Thunder ebbs to silence

0:28:07 > 0:28:11And lightning sleeps quietly in the corner

0:28:11 > 0:28:15Flood waters recede into memory

0:28:15 > 0:28:20Snow becomes a yielding cushion to aid us

0:28:20 > 0:28:25As we make our way to higher ground

0:28:26 > 0:28:30In our joy, we think we hear a whisper

0:28:30 > 0:28:32At first it is too soft

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Then only half heard

0:28:35 > 0:28:38We listen carefully as it gathers strength

0:28:38 > 0:28:40We hear a sweetness

0:28:40 > 0:28:43The word is Peace

0:28:43 > 0:28:45It is loud now

0:28:45 > 0:28:46It is louder

0:28:46 > 0:28:49Louder than the explosion of bombs

0:28:49 > 0:28:51We tremble at the sound

0:28:51 > 0:28:54We are thrilled by its presence

0:28:54 > 0:28:56It is what we have hungered for

0:28:56 > 0:28:58Not just the absence of war

0:28:58 > 0:29:00But true peace

0:29:02 > 0:29:04At this Holy instant

0:29:04 > 0:29:07We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Into the great religions of the world

0:29:10 > 0:29:13We jubilate the precious advent of trust

0:29:13 > 0:29:17We shout with glorious tongues at the coming of hope

0:34:11 > 0:34:16But it's not only with the voice that we are asked to offer praise.

0:36:47 > 0:36:51After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,

0:36:51 > 0:36:56during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem

0:37:00 > 0:37:05"We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

0:37:05 > 0:37:08When King Herod heard this he was disturbed,

0:37:08 > 0:37:11and all Jerusalem with him.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14When he had called together all the people's chief priests and

0:37:14 > 0:37:20teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied,

0:37:23 > 0:37:26"for this is what the Prophet has written.

0:37:26 > 0:37:31"But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least

0:37:31 > 0:37:36"among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler

0:37:36 > 0:37:40"who will be the shepherd of my people Israel."

0:37:48 > 0:37:51He sent them to Bethlehem and said,

0:37:55 > 0:37:59"As soon as you have found him, report to me,

0:37:59 > 0:38:02"so that I too may go and worship him."

0:38:02 > 0:38:06After they had heard the King, they went on their way,

0:38:06 > 0:38:09and the star they had seen in the east

0:38:09 > 0:38:14went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.

0:38:14 > 0:38:19When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

0:38:19 > 0:38:24On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and

0:38:24 > 0:38:29they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures

0:38:29 > 0:38:34and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

0:38:35 > 0:38:41And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod,
