0:05:09 > 0:05:14the UK Trust has decided to help people enjoy singing in choirs.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18They've commissioned seven composers to write new arrangements to carols,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20and we'll be hearing four of them tonight.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24The first is about the Angel who brought Mary the news

0:05:24 > 0:05:28that she was going to give birth to Jesus.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30But first, let's hear that story.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy,

0:05:35 > 0:05:39God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41He had a message for a young woman

0:05:41 > 0:05:43promised in marriage to a man named Joseph,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46who was a descendant of King David.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47Her name was Mary.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52The angel came to her and said, "Peace be with you!

0:05:52 > 0:05:55"The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!"

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and she wondered what his words meant.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05"God has been gracious to you.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08"You will become pregnant and give birth to a son,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10"and you will name him Jesus.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14"He will be great and will be called the Son of the most high God.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19"The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22"and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob for ever.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25"His kingdom will never end."

0:06:25 > 0:06:28"I am the Lord's servant," said Mary,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32"may it happen to me as you have said." And the angel left her.

0:06:48 > 0:06:54# The angel Gabriel from heaven came

0:06:54 > 0:07:02# With wings as drifted snow his eyes as flame

0:07:02 > 0:07:10# "All hail," said he, "Thou lowly maiden Mary"

0:07:10 > 0:07:14# Most highly favoured lady

0:07:14 > 0:07:20# Gloria!

0:07:32 > 0:07:38# "For know, a blessed mother thou shalt be

0:07:38 > 0:07:45# "All generations laud and honour thee

0:07:45 > 0:07:52# "Thy son shall be Emmanuel by seers foretold"

0:07:52 > 0:07:55# Most highly favoured lady

0:07:55 > 0:08:01- # Gloria! - Gloria! Gloria!

0:08:14 > 0:08:19# Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head.

0:08:19 > 0:08:26# "To me, be as it pleaseth God," she said

0:08:26 > 0:08:34# "My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name"

0:08:34 > 0:08:38# Most highly favoured lady

0:08:38 > 0:08:43# Gloria!

0:08:56 > 0:09:02# Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born

0:09:02 > 0:09:09# In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn

0:09:16 > 0:09:20# Most highly favoured lady

0:09:20 > 0:09:26# Gloria!

0:09:26 > 0:09:28# Mmmm

0:09:28 > 0:09:35# Gloria! #

0:09:56 > 0:10:02About that time, Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire.

0:10:02 > 0:10:08This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15So, Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth

0:10:15 > 0:10:19up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22As a descendant of David, he had to go there.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26He went with Mary, his fiancee, who was pregnant.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30While they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33She gave birth to a son, her first-born.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger,

0:10:36 > 0:10:39because there was no room in the hostel.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34There were shepherds camping in the neighbourhood.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37They had set night watches over their sheep.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Suddenly, God's angel stood among them

0:13:40 > 0:13:42and God's glory blazed around them.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49"I'm here to announce a great and joyful event

0:13:49 > 0:13:53"that is meant for everybody, worldwide.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56"A Saviour has just been born in David's town,

0:13:56 > 0:13:59"a Saviour who is Messiah and Master.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01"This is what you're to look for -

0:14:01 > 0:14:05"a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger."

0:14:05 > 0:14:07At once, the angel was joined

0:14:07 > 0:14:12by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises,

0:14:12 > 0:14:14"Glory to God in the heavenly heights!

0:14:14 > 0:14:18"Peace to all men and women on earth who please him!"

0:14:18 > 0:14:21As the angel choir withdrew into heaven,

0:14:21 > 0:14:23the shepherds talked it over.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26"Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can

0:14:26 > 0:14:30"and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us."

0:14:30 > 0:14:33They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph,

0:14:33 > 0:14:35and the baby lying in the manger.

0:14:37 > 0:14:42The traditional Bible nativity story has shepherds in one of the gospels - Luke,

0:14:42 > 0:14:46and Wise Men or Kings, in another - Matthew.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50This favourite carol builds on the story of the Wise Men.

0:17:32 > 0:17:37# Breathes a life of gathering gloom

0:23:55 > 0:23:58In the street, people rushing,

0:23:58 > 0:24:02pushing and jostling, all concern for others lost.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06Frantically seeking the last present,

0:24:06 > 0:24:09thoughtlessly passing the ardent carol singers,

0:24:09 > 0:24:13not even noticing the young man selling The Big Issue.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17And I wonder - what does Christmas mean?

0:24:17 > 0:24:21In the world, children crying at the sound of sirens.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24People looking up to the sky, fearful not of angel choirs,

0:24:24 > 0:24:27but the thunder of jets.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Parents wondering, not at good tidings,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33but whether sons and daughters will come home again

0:24:33 > 0:24:37from bomber cockpits or army barracks.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40And I wonder - what does Christmas mean?

0:24:40 > 0:24:45In the corridors of power, corruption and lies,

0:24:45 > 0:24:47politics and partisanship.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51Old scores settled, anger and bitterness.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55And I wonder - what does Christmas mean?

0:24:55 > 0:24:57And I remember.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59In Bethlehem, few heard angels.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02They were busy with other things.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04And Jesus, from his birth, was homeless,

0:25:04 > 0:25:08and, as a man, he depended for shelter on others.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11And I remember Herod and recall that lies,

0:25:11 > 0:25:16as the weapons of power, oppression, and the death of innocents,

0:25:16 > 0:25:21are part of the story which we have sanitised into insignificance.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23This was yesterday's news.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Here is today's news.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29In this world of selfishness and sin,

0:25:29 > 0:25:32of politics and pain, Christ was born.

0:25:32 > 0:25:37For this world, he died on a cross and was raised.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38God is with us.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42In this world, we have hope.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45In this darkness, we have light.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48A love which will never die and eternal life.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Glory to God!

0:28:31 > 0:28:35Who would think that what was needed

0:28:35 > 0:28:38To transform and save the Earth

0:28:38 > 0:28:42Might not be a plan or army

0:28:42 > 0:28:45Proud in purpose, proved in worth?

0:28:46 > 0:28:50Who would think, despite derision

0:28:50 > 0:28:53That a child should lead the way?

0:28:53 > 0:28:56God surprises Earth with Heaven

0:28:56 > 0:28:58Coming here on Christmas Day

0:29:00 > 0:29:05Shepherds watch, and wise men wonder

0:29:05 > 0:29:09Monarchs scorn, and angels sing

0:29:09 > 0:29:13Such a place as none would reckon

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Hosts a holy, helpless thing

0:29:16 > 0:29:20Stable beasts and bypassed strangers

0:29:20 > 0:29:23Watch a baby laid in hay

0:29:23 > 0:29:26God surprises Earth with Heaven

0:29:26 > 0:29:28Coming here on Christmas Day

0:29:30 > 0:29:33Centuries of skill and science

0:29:33 > 0:29:37Span the past from which we move

0:29:37 > 0:29:40Yet experience questions whether

0:29:40 > 0:29:43With such progress we improve

0:29:43 > 0:29:46While the human lot we ponder

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Lest our hopes and humour fray

0:29:49 > 0:29:52God surprises Earth with Heaven

0:29:52 > 0:29:55Coming here on Christmas Day.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58Now, here's another of the new carols.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02It's written by Paul Mealor, one of the judges on The Choir.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04And, as you'll see, he's cleverly woven in

0:30:04 > 0:30:06some familiar words and music.

0:30:18 > 0:30:23# I think of you at Christmas

0:30:25 > 0:30:33# Of all the times we shared

0:30:33 > 0:30:42# And I pray for you at Christmas time

0:30:42 > 0:30:50# And I pray that I will see you some day

0:30:50 > 0:30:53# At Christmas

0:30:53 > 0:30:57# At Christmas, I pray

0:33:38 > 0:33:41In the bleak midwinter, long ago

0:33:41 > 0:33:45Our God, Heaven cannot hold him, nor Earth sustain

0:33:45 > 0:33:49Heaven and Earth shall flee away when he comes to reign

0:33:49 > 0:33:52In the bleak midwinter, a stable place sufficed

0:33:52 > 0:33:55The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ

0:33:55 > 0:33:58Angels and archangels may have gathered there

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air

0:38:42 > 0:38:47preparing harmonies that will herald the excitement of your arrival.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51When the cloak of our fears

0:39:58 > 0:40:03that have seen the rise and fall of the sun, the daily toil of life,
