0:09:25 > 0:09:29Different Gospels tell the story of Jesus' birth in different ways.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35and the shepherds and angels in Luke's.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38As we go into Christmas morning it's mostly Luke's

0:16:53 > 0:16:57"In that part of the country there were shepherds spending the night in
0:16:57 > 0:17:01"the field taking care of their flocks.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05"An angel of the Lord appeared to them
0:17:05 > 0:17:08"and the glory of God shone on them.
0:17:08 > 0:17:12"They were terribly afraid but the angel said to them,
0:17:12 > 0:17:14"'Don't be afraid.
0:17:14 > 0:17:19"'I am here with good news for you which will bring great joy to
0:17:19 > 0:17:21"'all the people.
0:17:21 > 0:17:27"'This very day in David's town your saviour was born,
0:17:27 > 0:17:29"'Christ the Lord.'
0:17:31 > 0:17:35"Suddenly a great army of Heaven's angels appeared with
0:17:35 > 0:17:39"the angel, singing praises to God.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41"'Glory to God in the highest Heaven,
0:17:41 > 0:17:44"'and peace on Earth to those with whom He is pleased.'"
0:17:47 > 0:17:51"When the angels had gone away from them back into Heaven
0:17:51 > 0:17:55"the shepherds said to one another, 'let's go to Bethlehem
0:17:55 > 0:17:58"'and see this thing that has happened
0:17:58 > 0:17:59"'which the Lord has told us.'
0:17:59 > 0:18:03"So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph
0:18:03 > 0:18:07"and saw the baby lying in the manger."
0:18:07 > 0:18:15# The Angel Gabriel from Heaven came
0:18:15 > 0:18:17# His wings as drifted snow
0:18:17 > 0:18:21# His eyes as flame
0:18:21 > 0:18:28# All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary
0:18:28 > 0:18:32# Most highly favoured lady
0:18:32 > 0:18:38# Gloria
0:18:40 > 0:18:46# For know a blessed mother thou shalt be
0:18:46 > 0:18:53# All generations laud and honour thee
0:18:53 > 0:18:57# Thy son shall be Emmanuel
0:18:57 > 0:19:00# By seers foretold
0:19:00 > 0:19:04# Most highly favoured lady
0:19:04 > 0:19:10# Gloria
0:19:12 > 0:19:18# Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head
0:19:18 > 0:19:25# To me be as it pleaseth God she said
0:19:25 > 0:19:31# My soul shall laud and magnify His holy name
0:19:31 > 0:19:37# Most highly favoured lady
0:19:37 > 0:19:43# Gloria
0:19:44 > 0:19:50# Of her Emmanuel, the Christ, was born
0:19:50 > 0:19:57# In Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn
0:19:57 > 0:20:04# And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say
0:20:04 > 0:20:08# Most highly favoured lady
0:20:08 > 0:20:16# Gloria. #
0:23:13 > 0:23:16Now to the story of the wise men with their gifts of gold
0:23:16 > 0:23:21and frankincense and myrrh as told in Matthew's Gospel.
0:23:21 > 0:23:25"Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea
0:23:25 > 0:23:28"during the time when Herod was king.
0:23:29 > 0:23:34"Soon afterwards, some men who studied the stars came from the east
0:23:34 > 0:23:39"to Jerusalem and asked, 'where is the baby born to be
0:23:39 > 0:23:42"'the king of the Jews?
0:23:42 > 0:23:45"'We saw His star when it came up in the east
0:23:45 > 0:23:47"'and we have come to worship Him.'
0:23:49 > 0:23:52"When Herod heard about this he was very upset
0:23:52 > 0:23:55"and so was everyone else in Jerusalem.
0:23:57 > 0:24:00"He called together all the chief priests and the teachers
0:24:00 > 0:24:05"of the law and asked them, 'where will the Messiah be born?'
0:24:06 > 0:24:10"'In the town of Bethlehem in Judea,' they answered.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14"So Herod called the visitors from the east to a secret meeting
0:24:14 > 0:24:18"and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
0:24:19 > 0:24:24"Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28"'Go and make a careful search for the child and when you find Him
0:24:28 > 0:24:32"'let me know so that I too may go and worship Him.'
0:24:34 > 0:24:38"And so they left and on their way they saw the same star
0:24:38 > 0:24:40"they had seen in the east.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42"It went ahead of them
0:24:42 > 0:24:46"until it stopped over the place where the child was.
0:24:47 > 0:24:51"They went into the house and when they saw the child
0:24:51 > 0:24:55"with His mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped Him.
0:24:56 > 0:25:01"They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh
0:25:01 > 0:25:03"and presented them to Him."
0:26:35 > 0:26:40Gold. We never hear of this gift again.
0:26:40 > 0:26:45What use was gold to one who dined at the tables of other men
0:26:45 > 0:26:47and took lodging where He could?
0:26:49 > 0:26:50Frankincense.
0:26:50 > 0:26:53We never hear of this gift again.
0:26:53 > 0:26:58What use was frankincense to one who worshipped where He stood?
0:26:58 > 0:27:04The sky above Him a bigger cathedral than any built by man.
0:27:04 > 0:27:06Myrrh.
0:27:06 > 0:27:09We never hear of this gift again.
0:27:09 > 0:27:12What use was myrrh to one who took healing
0:27:12 > 0:27:17so seriously that He did it without herbs and medicines?
0:27:19 > 0:27:24I begin to wonder if Matthew was telling us a story here.
0:27:24 > 0:27:30A story which points out that the old ways of organising society
0:27:30 > 0:27:32and human relationships
0:27:32 > 0:27:36are made bankrupt by the coming of this child.
0:27:36 > 0:27:41Do the wise men say to Him, "This is the best we have got.
0:27:41 > 0:27:45"Now show us a better way."
0:27:45 > 0:27:48But maybe we're meant to be impressed by the wise men.
0:27:48 > 0:27:52Their gifts speak of the harvest of resources
0:27:52 > 0:27:54which we have at our disposal.
0:27:54 > 0:27:59Were they saying to Him, "The riches of the Earth are yours,
0:27:59 > 0:28:03"and to you they properly belong.
0:28:03 > 0:28:05"Show us how to use them.
0:28:05 > 0:28:10"Take our gold, and tell us how to redeem it, Redeemer Child.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13"Tell us how to dig deep in our pockets
0:28:13 > 0:28:16"for the victims of natural disasters.
0:28:16 > 0:28:21"People who need our gold today and for many days to come.
0:28:21 > 0:28:25"Take our frankincense and tell us again how to redeem it,
0:28:25 > 0:28:27"redeemer child.
0:28:27 > 0:28:31"Tell us that worship is about the giving of self,
0:28:31 > 0:28:33"the offering of self,
0:28:33 > 0:28:37"not some cosy activity we indulge in to get a feel-good factor
0:28:37 > 0:28:40"coursing through our own veins.
0:28:41 > 0:28:46"Take our myrrh and tell us again how to redeem it, Redeemer Child.
0:28:46 > 0:28:51"Tell us that healing is always a gift,
0:28:51 > 0:28:55"and that some healing is done by the words we do NOT say,
0:28:55 > 0:28:59"when to say the crass and the obvious is to wound,
0:28:59 > 0:29:04"and to say the blissful is to lift and mend."
0:29:06 > 0:29:09A few weeks ago at St Andrews Cathedral in Glasgow,
0:29:09 > 0:29:12Barbara Dickson sang her new version of a carol that
0:29:12 > 0:29:17dates back 1,000 years, and has been sung all over Europe ever since.
0:29:17 > 0:29:21Of The Father's Love Begotten.
0:29:22 > 0:29:26# Of the Father's love begotten
0:29:26 > 0:29:30# Ere the worlds began to be
0:29:30 > 0:29:34# He is Alpha and Omega
0:29:34 > 0:29:38# He the source the ending He
0:29:38 > 0:29:43# Of the things that are that have been
0:29:43 > 0:29:48# And that future years shall see
0:29:48 > 0:29:53# Evermore and evermore
0:29:53 > 0:29:58# At His Word the worlds were framed
0:29:58 > 0:30:01# He commanded, it was done
0:30:01 > 0:30:06# Heaven and Earth and depths of ocean
0:30:06 > 0:30:10# In their threefold order one
0:30:10 > 0:30:15# All that grows beneath the shining
0:30:15 > 0:30:19# Of the moon and burning sun
0:30:19 > 0:30:24# Evermore and evermore!
0:30:26 > 0:30:29# O that birth forever blessed
0:30:29 > 0:30:33# When the virgin, full of grace
0:30:33 > 0:30:37# By the Holy Ghost conceiving
0:30:37 > 0:30:41# Bear the Saviour of our race
0:30:41 > 0:30:46# And the Babe, the world's redeemer
0:30:46 > 0:30:50# First revealed His sacred face
0:30:50 > 0:30:56# Evermore and evermore!
0:30:57 > 0:31:01# This is He whom seers in old time
0:31:01 > 0:31:05# Chanted of with one accord
0:31:05 > 0:31:09# When the voices of the prophets
0:31:09 > 0:31:13# Promised in their faithful word
0:31:13 > 0:31:18# Now He shines the long expected
0:31:18 > 0:31:22# Let creation praise its Lord
0:31:22 > 0:31:28# Evermore and evermore!
0:31:28 > 0:31:32# O ye heights of Heaven adore Him
0:31:32 > 0:31:37# Angel hosts His praises sing
0:31:37 > 0:31:40# Powers, dominions bow before Him
0:31:40 > 0:31:45# And extol our God and King
0:31:45 > 0:31:50# Let no tongue on Earth be silent
0:31:50 > 0:31:54# Every voice in concert sing
0:31:54 > 0:32:00# Evermore and evermore!
0:32:00 > 0:32:04# Thee let old men, Thee let young men
0:32:04 > 0:32:08# Thee let boys in chorus sing
0:32:08 > 0:32:12# Matrons, virgins, little maidens
0:32:12 > 0:32:16# With glad voices answering
0:32:16 > 0:32:22# Let their guileless songs re-echo
0:32:22 > 0:32:26# And the heart its music bring
0:32:26 > 0:32:32# Evermore and evermore! #
0:32:34 > 0:32:38The Christmas story does have its darker moments.
0:32:38 > 0:32:42When Herod heard that Jesus was born, he responded by lashing out,
0:32:42 > 0:32:44killing innocent children.
0:32:44 > 0:32:50We think of how the past all that time ago has resonances today
0:32:50 > 0:32:53in a reading from Matthew's Gospel, a carol,
0:32:53 > 0:32:55and a contemporary reflection.
0:32:55 > 0:32:57After they had left,
0:32:57 > 0:33:03an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said,
0:33:03 > 0:33:06"Herod will be looking for the child in order to kill Him,
0:33:06 > 0:33:12"so, get up, take the child and His mother, and escape to Egypt,
0:33:12 > 0:33:15"and stay there until I tell you to leave."

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Lord, you arrived safely in Egypt,

0:36:08 > 0:36:12Protect them on their journeys
0:36:12 > 0:36:17from the rapacity of those who want to profit from their helplessness.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19From the greed of wealthy nations,
0:36:19 > 0:36:24who want to keep too much of the world's wealth for themselves.
0:36:24 > 0:36:29From the unscrupulous who may prey upon them when they arrive,
0:36:29 > 0:36:33and may an angel keep guard over them.
