0:00:12 > 0:00:15With just a few minutes to go to Christmas Day,
0:00:15 > 0:00:17we're joining the congregation and friends in the community
0:00:17 > 0:00:21for readings and carols to celebrate the birth of Christ.
0:00:21 > 0:00:26We start in traditional style, with Once In Royal David's City.
0:00:28 > 0:00:33# Once in royal David's city
0:00:33 > 0:00:39# Stood a lowly cattle shed
0:00:39 > 0:00:45# Where a mother laid her baby
0:00:45 > 0:00:50# In a manger for his bed
0:00:50 > 0:00:55# Mary was that mother mild
0:00:55 > 0:01:00# Jesus Christ, her little Child
0:03:08 > 0:03:12We begin our story with the Gospel of Luke.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15It's the familiar account of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem,
0:03:15 > 0:03:19but in a new translation called The Message.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus,
0:03:22 > 0:03:25that all the world should be registered.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28This was first the registration, and was taken
0:03:28 > 0:03:31while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34All went to their own towns to be registered.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee,
0:03:38 > 0:03:40to Judea, to the city of David,
0:03:40 > 0:03:41called Bethlehem,
0:03:41 > 0:03:45because he was descended from the house and family of David.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged,
0:03:48 > 0:03:51and who was expecting a child.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55While they were there, the time came for her to deliver the child,
0:03:55 > 0:03:58and she gave birth to her first-born son,
0:03:58 > 0:04:01and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger
0:04:01 > 0:04:05because there was no place for them in the inn.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18# Away in a manger
0:04:18 > 0:04:22# No crib for a bed
0:04:22 > 0:04:26# The little Lord Jesus
0:04:26 > 0:04:30# Laid down his sweet head
0:04:30 > 0:04:33# The stars in the bright sky
0:04:33 > 0:04:37# Looked down where he lay
0:04:37 > 0:04:41# The little Lord Jesus
0:04:41 > 0:04:44# Asleep on the hay
0:04:52 > 0:04:56# The cattle are lowing
0:04:56 > 0:05:00# The baby awakes
0:05:00 > 0:05:03# But little Lord Jesus
0:05:03 > 0:05:07# No crying he makes
0:05:07 > 0:05:10# I love thee, Lord Jesus
0:05:10 > 0:05:14# Look down from the sky
0:05:14 > 0:05:16# And stay by my side
0:05:16 > 0:05:20# Until morning is nigh
0:05:28 > 0:05:31# Be near me, Lord Jesus
0:05:31 > 0:05:35# I ask thee to stay
0:05:35 > 0:05:38# Close by me forever
0:05:38 > 0:05:42# And love me, I pray
0:05:42 > 0:05:45# Bless all the dear children
0:05:45 > 0:05:49# In thy tender care
0:05:49 > 0:05:52# And fit us for heaven
0:05:52 > 0:05:56# To live with thee there. #
0:06:08 > 0:06:11As well as the Bible, we've also got some modern readings
0:06:11 > 0:06:14reflecting on what Jesus' birth means.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18This first one throws us forward to the end of his life
0:06:18 > 0:06:22when he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to be tried.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25No room in the inn, of course,
0:06:25 > 0:06:28And not much room in the stable
0:06:28 > 0:06:30What with the shepherds, Magi, Mary,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Joseph, the heavenly host -
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Not to mention the baby
0:06:34 > 0:06:36Using our manger as a cot.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40You couldn't have squeezed another cherub in
0:06:40 > 0:06:42For love nor money.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45Still, in spite of the overcrowding,
0:06:45 > 0:06:49I did my best to make them feel wanted.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51I could see the baby and I
0:06:51 > 0:06:54Would be going places together.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04# I saw a fair maiden
0:07:04 > 0:07:06# Sitten and sing
0:07:06 > 0:07:08# She lulled a little child
0:07:08 > 0:07:13# A sweete lording
0:07:13 > 0:07:15# Lullay, mine liking
0:07:15 > 0:07:17# My dear son, my sweeting
0:07:17 > 0:07:19# Lullay, my dear heart
0:07:19 > 0:07:23# My own dear darling
0:07:30 > 0:07:32# That same Lord is he
0:07:32 > 0:07:34# That made alle thing
0:07:34 > 0:07:36# Of alle lordes he is Lord
0:07:36 > 0:07:40# Of alle kinges King
0:07:40 > 0:07:42# Lullay, mine liking
0:07:42 > 0:07:45# My dear son, my sweeting
0:07:45 > 0:07:47# Lullay, my dear heart
0:07:47 > 0:07:50# Mine own dear darling
0:07:58 > 0:08:00# There was mickle melody
0:08:00 > 0:08:03# At that childes birth
0:08:03 > 0:08:04# All that were in heavenly bliss
0:08:04 > 0:08:08# They made mickle mirth
0:08:08 > 0:08:11# Lullay, mine liking

0:08:43 > 0:08:47# Mine own dear darling. #
0:09:01 > 0:09:04In that region there were shepherds living in the fields,
0:09:04 > 0:09:07keeping watch over their flock by night.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10Then an angel of the Lord stood before them
0:09:10 > 0:09:15and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were terrified.
0:09:15 > 0:09:20But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for see,
0:09:20 > 0:09:24"I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.
0:09:24 > 0:09:28"To you is born this day in the city of David a saviour
0:09:28 > 0:09:30"who is the Messiah, the Lord.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33"This will be a sign for you.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36"You will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth
0:09:36 > 0:09:38"and lying in a manger."
0:09:38 > 0:09:40And suddenly there was with the angel
0:09:40 > 0:09:43a multitude of the heavenly host,
0:09:43 > 0:09:44praising God and saying,
0:09:44 > 0:09:47"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
0:09:47 > 0:09:51"and on earth peace among those whom he favours."

0:32:00 > 0:32:07# Before him lowly bend! #
0:32:33 > 0:32:35Our next reading was written by a girl
0:32:35 > 0:32:38who died when she was just a teenager,
0:32:38 > 0:32:40but it's so full of optimism.
0:32:40 > 0:32:41It's from a diary -
0:32:41 > 0:32:43the diary of Anne Frank.
0:32:45 > 0:32:48It's difficult in times like these -
0:32:48 > 0:32:51ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us,
0:32:51 > 0:32:55only to be crushed by grim reality.
0:32:55 > 0:32:58It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals,
0:32:58 > 0:33:02they seem so absurd and impractical.
0:33:02 > 0:33:05Yet I cling to them because I still believe,
0:33:05 > 0:33:08in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.
0:33:10 > 0:33:13It's utterly impossible for me to build my life
0:33:13 > 0:33:16on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death.
0:33:17 > 0:33:21I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness,
0:33:21 > 0:33:27I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too,
0:33:27 > 0:33:30I feel the suffering of millions.
0:33:30 > 0:33:33And yet, when I look up at the sky,
0:33:33 > 0:33:37I somehow feel that everything will change for the better,
0:33:37 > 0:33:39that this cruelty too will end,
0:33:39 > 0:33:43that peace and tranquillity will return once more.
0:33:43 > 0:33:48In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52Perhaps the day will come when I'll be able to realise them.
0:34:07 > 0:34:11# I had a dream that I was standing on a hillside
0:34:11 > 0:34:14# And all the lights of town were shining far below
0:34:14 > 0:34:17# When up in the air beautiful voices
0:34:17 > 0:34:21# Sing a new song Let everyone know
0:34:21 > 0:34:25# Oh and love shone down
0:34:25 > 0:34:28# Over the hills and over the valleys
0:34:28 > 0:34:31# Oh and love shone down
0:34:31 > 0:34:36# Over the world
0:34:36 > 0:34:39# Somebody spoke to me I knew it was an angel
0:34:39 > 0:34:43# He said there's something that I think you ought to know
0:34:43 > 0:34:46# Then he just smiled, said "Don't be afraid now"
0:34:46 > 0:34:50# Sing a new song Let everyone know
0:34:50 > 0:34:53# Oh and love shone down
0:34:53 > 0:34:57# Over the hills and over the valleys
0:34:57 > 0:35:00# Oh and love shone down
0:35:00 > 0:35:04# Over the world
0:35:04 > 0:35:08# And then he told me all about the baby Jesus
0:35:08 > 0:35:12# How to find him Where exactly I should go
0:35:12 > 0:35:15# Then he was joined by millions of others
0:35:15 > 0:35:19# Sing a new song Let everyone know
0:35:19 > 0:35:22# Oh and love shone down
0:35:22 > 0:35:26# Over the hills and over the valleys
0:35:26 > 0:35:29# Oh and love shone down
0:35:29 > 0:35:33# Over the world
0:35:33 > 0:35:37# Well, did I dream or was I really on that hillside
0:35:37 > 0:35:41# On that Christmas night so very long ago?
0:35:41 > 0:35:44# When he was born Jesus our saviour
0:35:44 > 0:35:48# Sing a new song Let everyone know
0:35:48 > 0:35:52# Oh and love shone down
0:35:52 > 0:35:55# Over the hills and over the valleys
0:35:55 > 0:35:59# Oh and love shone down
0:35:59 > 0:36:03# Over the world
0:36:03 > 0:36:08# Over the world. #

0:39:21 > 0:39:25Will you come into the darkness of tonight's world -
0:39:25 > 0:39:27not the friendly darkness
0:39:27 > 0:39:31as when sleep rescues us from tiredness,
0:39:31 > 0:39:33but the fearful darkness,
0:39:33 > 0:39:35in which people have stopped believing
0:39:35 > 0:39:39that war will end or that food will come
0:39:39 > 0:39:42or that a government will change
