:18:44. > :18:51.showed that we Brits are more pessimistic than any other nation.
:18:51. > :18:58.And, the world is becoming more gloomy. Wars, earthquakes, of
:18:58. > :19:02.revolutions. Children going to bed hungry. Starvation. Can anyone say
:19:02. > :19:08.that the euro or rescue the nations of Europe from going down like
:19:08. > :19:15.dominoes? But, here we all laugh. The cards have been sent, the tree
:19:15. > :19:22.has been decorated, children are up early. Adults are sleepy from all
:19:22. > :19:30.of their tasks. Why are we here? To welcome our King and Saviour to his
:19:30. > :19:35.world. Long ago, the Roman Emperor Augustus had rescued the Empire by
:19:35. > :19:40.defeating his rivals. Now he found himself having to pay for the
:19:40. > :19:46.armies and their weapons. So, he uses his military might on the
:19:46. > :19:53.civilian population. He orders a senses to raise taxes and pay his
:19:53. > :19:57.bankers. It sounds a little familiar. Ordinary people like Mary
:19:57. > :20:02.and Joseph and find themselves in an unfair situation which has
:20:02. > :20:11.suddenly got a lot tougher. Bethlehem turns away the young
:20:11. > :20:18.couple. Their baby is born in an outhouse. And placed in a manger.
:20:18. > :20:26.In the same region, there were shepherds in the fields. The angel
:20:26. > :20:30.comes to ordinary people first. The sort who had to be on duty at night.
:20:30. > :20:35.With a shift patterns that mean they cannot come to the temple
:20:36. > :20:42.regularly. But the Angel says, this is for everyone, we are in it
:20:42. > :20:52.together. Be not afraid, I bring you good news of great joy, for all
:20:52. > :20:54.
:20:54. > :20:59.of the people. Bethlehem may reject the Messiah, but God's army, the
:20:59. > :21:05.people in the fields, will see what everybody else Mrs, that here is
:21:05. > :21:12.the moment when God steps in to redeem the human story. So that we
:21:13. > :21:20.do not have to be afraid of the future. And which will have more
:21:20. > :21:27.influence on the history of the world? The Army, or Ray baby, and
:21:27. > :21:34.the ordinary men and women who will become his followers? As a pagan
:21:34. > :21:39.writer wrote, while the Emperor made give peace from walk on land
:21:39. > :21:47.and sea, he cannot give peace from passion, grief, and envy. He cannot
:21:47. > :21:51.give peace of heart, which we yearn for more than out with peace. But,
:21:52. > :22:01.the birth of this child can. This will be a sign for you, you will

:22:02. > :22:07.find a child wrapped in bands of cloth, and lying in a manger. So,
:22:07. > :22:11.what about us? Mostly, our lives are humdrum, but occasionally we
:22:11. > :22:19.get a glimpse of the angels, especially perhaps at Christmas.
:22:19. > :22:24.And, our heart cannot stop itself from lolling -- lolling to join in
:22:24. > :22:32.with the angels and their song. It is at such moments that our lives
:22:32. > :22:42.can become a kind of stable, and our heart's, a kind of manger.

:22:43. > :22:49.Where he is glad to do well and -- dwell. When the world get darker,
:22:49. > :22:54.surveys show we are less generous. Poor people must big scroungers, we
:22:54. > :23:00.say. But remember, it was to the shepherds that the Saviour came
:23:00. > :23:05.first. Christ will be our Saviour again, and take away our here, if
:23:05. > :23:15.we make space for him as the one who chooses the humble to defeat
