:00:34. > :00:39.St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol are delighted but you can all share

:00:39. > :00:43.were thus in our family worship on this Christmas Day morning. A very

:00:43. > :00:53.important part of our worship is our Nativity play by our children,

:00:53. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:03.and that's where we are going to God sent an angel called Gabriel to

:01:03. > :01:07.a young woman who lived in the town of NASA red. She was called Mary

:01:08. > :01:13.and was engaged to marry a man called Gelson. The Angel Gabriel

:01:13. > :01:16.said to Mary, peace be with you, carp has blessed you. Mary was very

:01:17. > :01:22.surprised by this and wondered what the message meant. So the angel

:01:22. > :01:28.said, don't be afraid, God has been very good to you. You will give

:01:28. > :01:32.birth to a baby boy and call him Jesus. His kingdom will never end.

:01:32. > :01:40.Mary was afraid, but she trusted Court and replied to the Angel,

:01:40. > :01:43.made it happen as Court has chosen. A few months went by. Mary and

:01:43. > :01:48.Joseph lived in a land that was part of the Roman Empire and had to

:01:48. > :01:53.return to their home town to be registered. Mary, Joseph and a

:01:53. > :01:58.donkey travelled from Nazareth to Bethlehem, walking slowly because

:01:58. > :02:02.Mary's baby was about to be born. When they finally reached Bethlehem

:02:02. > :02:06.there was nowhere to stay. At every house was full and the only space

:02:06. > :02:11.they could find to rest was in a stable. With animals around them.

:02:11. > :02:17.And it was there that Mary gave birth to her baby boy, as Gabriel

:02:17. > :02:21.had said. She called him Jesus. Now when the hills outside Bethlehem,

:02:21. > :02:26.shepherds were looking after their sheep through the night. Suddenly

:02:26. > :02:30.an angel appeared to them and the glory of God shone all around them.

:02:30. > :02:35.Like Mary, the shepherds were terrified that the angel said,

:02:35. > :02:40.don't be afraid, I have great news for you and everyone. Today in

:02:40. > :02:46.Bethlehem the saviour has been born. You will find the baby lying in a

:02:46. > :02:50.manger. And all the angels praised God and sang, glory to God in the

:02:50. > :02:55.highest and peace to all upon the earth. The shepherds them said to

:02:55. > :03:00.one another, let's go to Bethlehem and see the baby for ourselves. So

:03:00. > :03:04.they went to Mary and Joseph and found baby Jesus lying in a manger,

:03:04. > :03:09.just as they had heard. They told everyone what had happened and

:03:09. > :03:19.returned to their flocks, praising God and giving thanks for the birth

:03:19. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :07:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 233 seconds

:07:42. > :07:50.through Jesus the Saviour of the world.

:07:50. > :07:55.Lord of grace and truth, we confess our unworthiness

:07:56. > :08:00.to stand in your presence as your children.

:12:11. > :12:17.Lord Jesus Christ, your birth at Bethlehem

:12:17. > :12:23.draws us to kneel in wonder at heaven touching earth.

:12:23. > :12:27.Accept our heartfelt praise as we worship you,

:12:31. > :12:41.Amen.

:12:41. > :12:41.

:12:41. > :12:46.A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah.

:12:46. > :12:50.How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger

:12:50. > :12:53.who announces peace, who brings good news,

:12:53. > :12:59.who announces salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns."

:12:59. > :13:03.Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices,

:13:03. > :13:06.together they sing for joy,

:13:06. > :13:11.for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion.

:13:11. > :13:16.Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem,

:13:16. > :13:19.for the Lord has comforted his people,

:13:20. > :13:23.he has redeemed Jerusalem.

:13:23. > :13:28.The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations,

:13:28. > :13:34.and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

:13:34. > :13:37.This is the word of the Lord.

:13:37. > :13:47.ALL: Thanks be to God.

:13:47. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :16:20.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 233 seconds

:16:20. > :16:24.Long ago God spoke to our ancestors

:16:24. > :16:28.in many and various ways by the prophets,

:16:28. > :16:32.but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son,

:16:32. > :16:36.whom he appointed heir of all things,

:16:36. > :16:41.through whom he also created the worlds.

:16:41. > :16:45.He is the reflection of God's glory

:16:45. > :16:49.and the exact imprint of God's very being,

:16:49. > :16:55.and he sustains all things by his powerful word.

:16:55. > :16:58.When he had made purification for sins,

:16:58. > :17:03.he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

:17:03. > :17:09.having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited

:17:09. > :17:13.is more excellent than theirs.

:17:13. > :17:16.For to which of the angels did God ever say,

:17:16. > :17:20."You are my Son. Today I have begotten you"?

:17:20. > :17:27.Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?

:17:27. > :17:32.And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world,

:17:32. > :17:36.he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."

:17:36. > :17:41.Of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds,

:17:41. > :17:45."and his servants flames of fire."

:17:45. > :17:52.But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

:17:52. > :17:56."and the righteous sceptre is the sceptre of your kingdom.

:17:56. > :18:00."You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness,

:18:00. > :18:02."therefore God, your God,

:18:02. > :18:08."has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions."

:18:08. > :18:13.And, "In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth,

:18:13. > :18:17."and the heavens are the work of your hands,

:18:17. > :18:22."they will perish, but you remain,

:18:22. > :18:25."they will all wear out like clothing,

:18:25. > :18:28."like a cloak you will roll them up,

:18:28. > :18:31."and like clothing they will be changed.

:18:31. > :18:38."But you are the same, and your years will never end."

:18:38. > :18:41.This is the word of the Lord.

:18:41. > :18:51.ALL: Thanks be to God.

:18:51. > :18:54.

:18:54. > :19:02.ALL: Alleluia.

:19:02. > :19:10.ALL: # Alleluia.

:19:10. > :19:14.# The word became flesh and dwelt among us

:19:14. > :19:22.# And we have seen his glory. #

:19:22. > :19:27.ALL: # Alleluia.

:19:27. > :19:34.ALL: # Alleluia.

:19:34. > :19:44.ALL: # Alleluia.

:19:44. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:53.Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

:19:54. > :20:02.ALL: Glory to you, O Lord.

:20:02. > :20:06.In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus

:20:06. > :20:09.that all the world should be registered.

:20:09. > :20:12.This was the first registration

:20:12. > :20:16.and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

:20:16. > :20:20.All went to their own towns to be registered.

:20:20. > :20:26.Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea,

:20:26. > :20:30.to the city of David called Bethlehem,

:20:30. > :20:35.because he was descended from the house and family of David.

:20:35. > :20:39.He went to be registered with Mary,

:20:39. > :20:43.to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.

:20:43. > :20:48.While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.

:20:48. > :20:52.And she gave birth to her firstborn son

:20:52. > :20:56.and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger,

:20:56. > :21:01.because there was no place for them in the inn.

:21:01. > :21:05.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields,

:21:05. > :21:09.keeping watch over their flock by night.

:21:09. > :21:12.Then an angel of the Lord stood before them,

:21:12. > :21:16.and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

:21:16. > :21:19.and they were terrified.

:21:19. > :21:22.But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid,

:21:22. > :21:26."for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy

:21:26. > :21:29."for all the people -

:21:29. > :21:33."to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,

:21:33. > :21:37."who is the Messiah, the Lord.

:21:37. > :21:40."This will be a sign for you.

:21:40. > :21:43."You will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth

:21:43. > :21:46."and lying in a manger."

:21:46. > :21:49.And suddenly there was with the angel

:21:49. > :21:53.a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

:21:53. > :21:57."Glory to God in the highest heaven,

:21:57. > :22:03."and on earth peace among those whom he favours!"

:22:03. > :22:06.When the angels had left them and gone into heaven,

:22:06. > :22:09.the shepherds said to one another,

:22:09. > :22:15."Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place,

:22:15. > :22:18."which the Lord has made known to us."

:22:18. > :22:22.So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph,

:22:22. > :22:26.and the child lying in the manger.

:22:26. > :22:32.When they saw this, they made known

:22:32. > :22:34.what had been told them about this child,

:22:35. > :22:38.and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

:22:39. > :22:46.But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.

:22:46. > :22:50.The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God

:22:50. > :22:57.for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

:22:57. > :23:02.This is the gospel of the Lord.

:23:02. > :23:12.ALL: # Praise to you, O Christ. #

:23:12. > :23:22.ORGAN FANFARE

:23:22. > :23:59.

:23:59. > :24:09.lest all my speaking and our hearing be naught but vanity.

:24:09. > :24:09.

:24:09. > :24:13.Last Christmas, I was standing in my local shop.

:24:13. > :24:15.The lady in front of me was having a chat with the cashier.

:24:15. > :24:17.She asked her,

:24:17. > :24:19."What are you getting your husband for Christmas this year?"

:24:20. > :24:22.The lady replied, "The same as last year."

:24:22. > :24:24.The cashier pulled a little face and went, "Oh."

:24:24. > :24:26."No," the lady said.

:24:26. > :24:29."I mean the same as he has had for the last ten years."

:24:29. > :24:32.The cashier pulled even more of a face and exclaimed, "Oh!"

:24:32. > :24:35."You're not understanding," she said.

:24:35. > :24:37."I give him exactly the same thing every year.

:24:37. > :24:39."I don't buy him anything new.

:24:39. > :24:42."He has had the same new pair of slippers and a scarf

:24:42. > :24:45."every year for ten years.

:24:45. > :24:49."We get up, we go to see the family,

:24:49. > :24:51."we come home and have Christmas dinner,

:24:51. > :24:54."he has a few too many drinks, I give him his presents,

:24:54. > :24:57."he opens them and tells me how lovely they are.

:24:57. > :25:02."He then puts them down by the side of his chair and goes to sleep.

:25:02. > :25:07."I pick them up and put them in the cupboard until next year."

:25:07. > :25:10.We all laughed in the shopping queue.

:25:10. > :25:12.It's such a great story, and we can all imagine it.

:25:12. > :25:15.And yet, here we stand in St Mary Redcliffe,

:25:15. > :25:17.as people have been standing here before us

:25:17. > :25:20.every Christmas Day for at least 800 years and I wonder,

:25:20. > :25:23.are we so intoxicated by the worldly Christmas

:25:23. > :25:26.that we do not notice that, year after year,

:25:26. > :25:29.we get the same pair of slippers, same old scarf,

:25:29. > :25:33.the same old emperor's new clothes.

:25:33. > :25:36.We dare not truly look at what we are being offered.

:25:36. > :25:39.We quickly put it down, with a sense of gratitude

:25:39. > :25:42.but also a sense of fear,

:25:42. > :25:45.lest we truly perceive that the father of lies

:25:45. > :25:49.has again pulled his old magician's trick.

:25:49. > :25:53.So, my brothers and sisters,

:25:53. > :25:57.dare we just this one time truly ask ourselves,

:25:57. > :26:01."What is the gift I have been given?"

:26:01. > :26:03.And it's not easy for us,

:26:03. > :26:07.because we have become almost totally enraptured

:26:07. > :26:11.by what other people tell us Christmas should be.

:26:11. > :26:14.The adverts on the telly, the jingles in the shops,

:26:14. > :26:19.the aching memory of how precious this all once was

:26:19. > :26:22.All these things and many others conspire to try and convince us

:26:22. > :26:24.that though we are naked,

:26:24. > :26:30.we are in fact dressed in the emperor's finest suit.

:26:30. > :26:33.So where could we turn to get a clue?

:26:33. > :26:36.Where might we truly find this gift?

:26:36. > :26:43.Must we go on some great journey, follow some cold, shining star?

:26:43. > :26:47.I think we may find a clue in a slightly more prosaic place.

:26:47. > :26:49.Somewhere in our homes,

:26:49. > :26:52.somewhere nearby is a picture on the front of the card

:26:52. > :26:54.we will find replicating

:26:54. > :26:58.the Nativity we saw at the beginning of our service.

:26:58. > :27:01.A picture of a mother and child, a father,

:27:01. > :27:05.some shepherds and, somewhat stretching the biblical timeline,

:27:05. > :27:08.there will be three Kings...

:27:08. > :27:11.and a donkey.

:27:11. > :27:13.There are many truths I could suggest

:27:13. > :27:16.about this ubiquitous picture

:27:16. > :27:18.that is in virtually every home in the land.

:27:18. > :27:21.But for today, two simple ones.

:27:21. > :27:26.Firstly, no-one is alone in the picture.

:27:26. > :27:28.If we are truly seeking the great gift of Christmas,

:27:28. > :27:31.it cannot be found alone.

:27:31. > :27:34.At this time, when so many of us make so much of an effort

:27:34. > :27:39.to be with family, how many are excluded?

:27:39. > :27:43.Is there someone in my life, or your life,

:27:43. > :27:47.who because of my wrongs, or possibly theirs,

:27:47. > :27:50.I am not making any effort with this Christmas?

:27:50. > :27:53.When I go home from here to my little family,

:27:53. > :27:55.if I were truly seeking a Christmas gift,

:27:55. > :27:59.I would be looking beyond that which I have comfortably created,

:27:59. > :28:04.looking to the outcast, the one who needs my love

:28:05. > :28:09.but, in truth, I'm too busy and too scared to give it.

:28:09. > :28:12.And it may be that some of us, we will go home and be alone,

:28:12. > :28:19.too scared, to prideful to reach out.

:28:19. > :28:21.For the prodigal mother

:28:21. > :28:24.to reach out her hand to her long-lost daughter,

:28:25. > :28:27.for love to be reunited.

:28:27. > :28:30.Just as the scent of a real Christmas tree

:28:30. > :28:32.reminds us all of our childhood Christmases,

:28:32. > :28:38.so these simple reconciliations fill our hearts with heaven.

:28:38. > :28:41.And lastly, as we look upon the Nativity picture,

:28:41. > :28:45.we must not be too busy or too distracted

:28:45. > :28:49.to know that the little child looking out at me and at you

:28:49. > :28:55.is Almighty God, who, if we could but find the courage to gaze back,

:28:55. > :28:58.would doubtless completely know us

:28:58. > :29:06.and in knowing still love us, redeem us and treasure us for ever.

:29:06. > :29:09.May you this Christmas Day find the true gift of Christmas

:29:09. > :29:13.by forsaking your pride and reaching out in love

:29:13. > :29:18.to the little, the lost, the last and the least.

:29:18. > :29:22.And in so doing, may you reflect the great truth of the crib

:29:22. > :29:30.that God forsook his Majesty and reached out, in love, to you.

:29:30. > :29:34.Trust me when I tell you in 800 years' time,

:29:34. > :29:39.everything you treasure will be dust,

:29:39. > :29:42.except the love you give and receive.

:29:42. > :29:46.This, in God, is eternal.
