0:03:13 > 0:03:18A very warm welcome to all and those at home watching us this morning. We

0:03:18 > 0:03:23gather for worship on this very special day with a goodly sprinkling

0:03:23 > 0:03:29of young shepherds and angels and even one King, to mark the moment

0:03:29 > 0:03:34when the heaven came down to earth and God revealed himself as a babe

0:03:34 > 0:03:42in a manger, born in a stable far from home. As the story of Love

0:03:42 > 0:03:48incarnate unfolds, so we come to the table where bread and wine is

0:03:48 > 0:03:54blessed, broken and shared, in remembrance of Christ, who brings

0:03:54 > 0:04:07light, hope and friendship to all who believe and trust in him. And so

0:04:07 > 0:04:11now, in awe of the newborn Christ child, we open our hearts in

0:04:11 > 0:04:12penitence and faith.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14God our Father, you sent your Son full of

0:05:06 > 0:05:08and be cleansed from all your sins, through

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Jesus Christ our Lord.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Let us pray.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Almighty God, you have given us your only-begotten

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Son to take our nature upon him and as at this time to be born of

0:09:26 > 0:09:28a pure virgin.

0:09:28 > 0:09:35Grant that we, who have been born again

0:09:35 > 0:09:39and made your children by adoption and grace,

0:09:39 > 0:09:44may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit:

0:09:44 > 0:09:46through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive

0:09:46 > 0:09:49and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy

0:09:49 > 0:09:50Spirit, one God, now and forever.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53ALL:Amen.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05A reading from the Book of Isaiah.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07The people who walked in darkness have

0:10:07 > 0:10:09seen a great light.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Those who lived in a land of deep darkness,

0:10:11 > 0:10:14on them light has shined.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16For a child has been born for us,

0:10:16 > 0:10:20a son given to us.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Authority rests upon his shoulders,

0:10:23 > 0:10:28and he is named wonderful Counsellor,

0:10:28 > 0:10:32mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36His authority shall grow continually,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38and there shall be endless peace

0:10:38 > 0:10:43for the throne of David and his kingdom.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45He will establish and uphold it with justice

0:10:45 > 0:10:47and with righteousness

0:10:47 > 0:10:51from this time onwards and for evermore.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59This is the word of the Lord.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02ALL:Thanks be to God.

0:14:28 > 0:14:38# Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

0:14:39 > 0:14:49# Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

0:14:53 > 0:14:54Alleluia!

0:14:54 > 0:14:55Alleluia!

0:14:55 > 0:14:57We declare to you what was from the beginning,

0:14:57 > 0:15:03the Word who is life.

0:15:03 > 0:15:08# Alleluia!

0:15:08 > 0:15:16# Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!#

0:15:18 > 0:15:19The Lord be with you.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21ALL:And also with you.

0:15:21 > 0:15:31Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.

0:15:32 > 0:15:38# Glory to you, O Lord.

0:15:47 > 0:15:52In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world

0:15:52 > 0:15:54should be registered.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius

0:15:59 > 0:16:02was governor of Syria.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06All went to their own towns to be registered.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth

0:16:08 > 0:16:13in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called

0:16:13 > 0:16:17Bethlehem, because he was descended from

0:16:17 > 0:16:22the house and family of David.

0:16:22 > 0:16:27He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who

0:16:27 > 0:16:31was expecting a child.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33While they were there, the time came for

0:16:33 > 0:16:37her to deliver her child.

0:16:37 > 0:16:42And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in

0:16:42 > 0:16:46bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger,

0:16:46 > 0:16:50because there was no place for them in the inn.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54In that region there were shepherds living

0:16:54 > 0:16:56in the fields, keeping watch over their flock

0:16:56 > 0:17:01by night.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Then an angel of the Lord stood before them,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they

0:17:07 > 0:17:11were terrified.

0:17:11 > 0:17:18But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid!

0:17:18 > 0:17:24For see, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.

0:17:24 > 0:17:29To you is born this day in the city of David

0:17:29 > 0:17:35a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37This will be a sign for you: you will find a

0:17:37 > 0:17:40child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying

0:17:40 > 0:17:45in a manger.

0:17:45 > 0:17:50And suddenly there was with the angel a

0:17:50 > 0:17:51multitude of the heavenly host, praising

0:17:51 > 0:17:55God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven,

0:17:55 > 0:18:05and on earth peace among those whom he favours!

0:18:06 > 0:18:13This is the Gospel of the Lord.

0:18:13 > 0:18:20# Praise to you, O Christ.

0:19:08 > 0:19:13May I speak and may we hear, in the name of the God of love that

0:19:13 > 0:19:23creators, redeems us and sustains us. Amen. Please sit down.

0:19:23 > 0:19:32I'm not a parent myself. I have 12 wonderful godchildren. Not being a

0:19:32 > 0:19:35parent I am also slightly filled with trepidation when I take a

0:19:35 > 0:19:39newborn baby in my arms. Trepidation probably shared by the family will

0:19:39 > 0:19:45hand the baby over to me. I wonder how Ali is feeling now? Ali gave

0:19:45 > 0:19:52birth to Theodora. And will, are accurate, is the Father. Just a week

0:19:52 > 0:19:58ago. And here she is sleeping peacefully in her mother's arms. See

0:19:58 > 0:20:08how long it lasts. Apparently there is something hard-wired in our DNA

0:20:08 > 0:20:14about learning how to protect a child, particularly a newborn one.

0:20:14 > 0:20:22Hold the head. For heaven's six, don't drop them! But also, there

0:20:22 > 0:20:25must be deeper questions that arise in our hearts when we take on

0:20:25 > 0:20:30parenting any kind. Are we grown up enough to be responsible for this

0:20:30 > 0:20:38new life? Are we selfless enough, patient enough, resilient enough,

0:20:38 > 0:20:46generous enough? Tireless enough? To cope with the long sleepless nights

0:20:46 > 0:20:50that will lie ahead of us. Perhaps that is part of what God is

0:20:50 > 0:20:55communicating to a us in the mystery of Christmas. Perhaps it's an

0:20:55 > 0:20:59invitation to be grown up enough, to see a new way of loving, a new way

0:20:59 > 0:21:08of receiving. It might be hard-wired in our DNA to know how to protect a

0:21:08 > 0:21:12child, but it's possibly also hard-wired in us to look for the

0:21:12 > 0:21:19most majestic, the most powerful, the most mighty, and worship that.

0:21:19 > 0:21:25And yet, what God says to us on Christmas morning is, are you grown

0:21:25 > 0:21:32up enough to be able to see me in this, in all this vulnerable,

0:21:32 > 0:21:40fragile and, oh yes, nappy filling vulnerability? Not in the mighty,

0:21:40 > 0:21:45not in the powerful, not in the ground. But in all this tenderness,

0:21:45 > 0:21:52this vulnerability, this crying, hunger and need. Can you hold God in

0:21:52 > 0:21:59your arms and on your heart? Because that may be what we are being asked

0:21:59 > 0:22:03in the Christmas mystery. And of course vulnerability and need

0:22:03 > 0:22:10doesn't just come in the form of a human child. It comes in the form of

0:22:10 > 0:22:16any in our society, the most vulnerable and most are made. So

0:22:16 > 0:22:20perhaps we are invited to refuse the rhetoric of the publicly powerful

0:22:20 > 0:22:24who might invite us to jaw up our boundaries and barriers against

0:22:24 > 0:22:29those we do not like or do not trust. And instead to see a new kind

0:22:29 > 0:22:33of loving, a new kind of loving Sharon us in this vulnerable, holy

0:22:33 > 0:22:41child. Because if we can see God in this form, then we have to see God

0:22:41 > 0:22:48in the form of every human life. And particularly in the form of those

0:22:48 > 0:22:56most in need and vulnerable. The holy child of the stable 's birth

0:22:56 > 0:23:01well, a few days after his birth, have to take to the roads, fleeing

0:23:01 > 0:23:09from Herod's murderous soldiers, to find refuge in a foreign land. We're

0:23:09 > 0:23:13trying to fulfil a bit of an ambition at All Saints to sponsor a

0:23:13 > 0:23:20refugee family from Syria in 2018. Just one family. Part of the

0:23:20 > 0:23:24government allocation of 5000 families. It's not much. But it's a

0:23:24 > 0:23:32simple goal. How we make of a piece, our worship and prayer week by week,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36with action, to try and make God's world a better place in some small

0:23:36 > 0:23:45way. The child of the stables birth turns the world upside down and

0:23:45 > 0:23:56says, see God in this vulnerable need, to hold and protect. So can

0:23:56 > 0:24:01you see God in those vulnerable and needy, who need our care and our

0:24:01 > 0:24:10love? Whatever way you can find to care and love today, tomorrow. To

0:24:10 > 0:24:13hold them, nurture them and protect them.

0:24:13 > 0:24:29Amen. So we have a living family here to celebrate. Many families.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32But also, if you know anything about the Spanish or Latin American

0:24:32 > 0:24:38tradition of the Posada, a knitted family of Mary and Joseph and the

0:24:38 > 0:24:42donkey have been travelling around our Paris, going from family to

0:24:42 > 0:24:48family throughout Advent, spending a night in houses, the family getting

0:24:48 > 0:24:54the chance to be innkeepers. The Carmels have been the last family to

0:24:54 > 0:24:58receive the holy family of the Posada. There are going to place

0:24:58 > 0:25:00them in their grip on Christmas morning.

0:25:00 > 0:25:07Shall we stand and shall we go?

0:25:22 > 0:25:25# In the bleak mid-winter

0:25:25 > 0:25:31# Frosty wind made moan

0:25:31 > 0:25:35# Earth stood hard as iron

0:25:35 > 0:25:41# Water like a stone

0:25:41 > 0:25:47# Snow had fallen, snow on snow

0:25:47 > 0:25:54# Snow on snow

0:28:15 > 0:28:23# I would bring a lamb

0:28:23 > 0:28:29# If I were a Wise Man

0:28:29 > 0:28:34# I would do my part

0:28:34 > 0:28:41# Yet what I can I give Him

0:28:41 > 0:28:48# Give my heart

0:29:07 > 0:29:08Please stand to make the profession of

0:29:08 > 0:29:12Christian faith into which you were baptised

0:29:12 > 0:29:18and in which you live and grow.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21Do you believe and trust in God the Father,

0:29:21 > 0:29:23source of all being, the one for whom we

0:29:23 > 0:29:25exist?

0:29:25 > 0:29:29ALL:I believe and trust in him.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Do you believe and trust in God the Son

0:29:31 > 0:29:34who took our human nature, died for us

0:29:34 > 0:29:35and rose again?

0:29:35 > 0:29:38ALL:I believe and trust in him.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit,

0:29:41 > 0:29:43who gives life to the people of God, and

0:29:43 > 0:29:46makes Christ known to the world?

0:29:46 > 0:29:49ALL:I believe and trust in him.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52This is the faith of the Church.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54ALL:This is our faith.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56We believe and trust in one God,

0:29:56 > 0:30:00Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08Let us pray.

0:30:21 > 0:30:28Lord Jesus. ALL: Hear our prayer.
