0:13:51 > 0:13:53SHE SINGS IN TIBETAN

0:17:12 > 0:17:16Yungchen, you've performed for audiences in over 70 countries.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18What do you think of Ireland?

0:17:18 > 0:17:23I feel Ireland is a second homeland for me.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26I like the people very much.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Very close to me.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30Tell us about your style of music.

0:17:30 > 0:17:37When I write songs I try to keep my grandmother's roots,

0:17:37 > 0:17:40and then from there I go through a journey.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43You know, now I travel so many countries

0:17:43 > 0:17:47and meet such wonderful,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51talented people and cultures,

0:17:51 > 0:17:56so then I write suitable for my voice, so really I cannot...

0:17:56 > 0:18:00Sometimes, you know, people ask me, "What type?"

0:18:00 > 0:18:04And I cannot put it in, say, a category.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07I do write just for my voice.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The year 2010 was the year of Kan,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25according to the Mayan oracle, the Tzolkin,

0:23:25 > 0:23:29and it was a very auspicious time for new beginnings.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33It's just the heat's making all the instruments out of tune.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36My wife is from Mexico and she has introduced me

0:23:36 > 0:23:41to this whole world of the Tzolkin and the music surrounding it,

0:23:41 > 0:23:43so as to 2010 was the year of KAN,

0:23:43 > 0:23:48we kind of had made a few fresh starts at the end of 2009,

0:23:48 > 0:23:50got together and played some tunes,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52so it just seemed like an appropriate time

0:23:52 > 0:23:55to start something fresh, to take the leap.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57So it has all sorts of undertones.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05You know, you can draw a line from what Moving Hearts

0:24:05 > 0:24:08might have been doing or what Planxty might have been doing

0:24:08 > 0:24:10and what Silly Wizard and Capercaillie

0:24:10 > 0:24:12and people like that were doing in Scotland.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16And I think we are still part of that whole, kind of, chain

0:24:16 > 0:24:19drawing on influences from different styles of music

0:24:19 > 0:24:21and arriving where we do today.

0:24:24 > 0:24:28There's a real magic involved in it, in composition.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Sometimes it will be for a trip that's been six months previous,

0:24:31 > 0:24:34but it's taken a little while for it to be processed,

0:24:34 > 0:24:37or a meeting or your heart being broke or,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39you know, a babbie being born or something.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42It's kind of, your music is your life and, you know,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44if you haven't lived it it won't come out.
