0:04:56 > 0:04:57- Congratulations to the - young performers.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59- When it comes to - the instrumentalists,

0:04:59 > 0:05:01- the audience in the Pavilion - have a feast of delights.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04- We often receive a glimpse of future - porfessional artists.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05- The standard is always very high. - Before the year's Blue Riband

0:05:05 > 0:05:08- competition, we'll head over

0:05:08 > 0:05:18- to the instrumental duets.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27- competition of the day, - the Instrumental Duet,

0:05:27 > 0:05:28- Rowenna and Georgina - from Abergavenny came second

0:05:58 > 0:06:03- Anwen and Lleucu.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11- to the main instrumental - competition of the day,

0:07:11 > 0:07:21- the Instrumental Blue Riband. - Historically, the competition has

0:07:21 > 0:07:27- always been of a very high standard. - And before things began to heat up

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- onstage, I had a chat

0:07:30 > 0:07:33- with a previous winner. - Steffan Morris, winner

0:07:33 > 0:07:35- of the Instrumental Blue Riband over

0:07:35 > 0:07:42- 19 years of age in 2014. - Let's focus on the youngest

0:07:42 > 0:07:45- competitors, those aged under 16. - Everyone says the standard

0:07:45 > 0:07:46- is always high.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- Is that true? - Yes, it's very true.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- The standard is always fantastic. - A lot of people compete

0:07:50 > 0:07:53- in the Blue Riband and it's

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- a fantastic tradition. - Out of the five competitions held

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- in the Pagoda, brass, harp, etc,

0:08:00 > 0:08:01- only four reach the Pavilion. - There have been many complaints over

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- the years about that.

0:08:04 > 0:08:09- What's your opinion? - Well, it's a shame.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11- The Pagoda isn't ideal. - It's very noisy there,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- if it's raining,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- the wind's whistling. - People don't always hear the little

0:08:16 > 0:08:19- nuances we have been practising. - It's a great shame

0:08:19 > 0:08:23- that we lose that. - And maybe ever moreso this year,

0:08:23 > 0:08:28- with the concert hall here.

0:08:28 > 0:08:34- Yes, it's much better this year. - I've already played on the stage.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37- The sound is much better. - It wasn't always great

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- in the old Pavilion,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- but it's a nicer place to play now. - So it's even more of a shame that

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- we're missing out. - And for the winner, how much

0:08:47 > 0:08:50- of a boost will it be?

0:08:50 > 0:08:55- How much of a boost was it for you? - The Eisteddfod is fantastic.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57- It gives you so much confidence. - People always comment that Welsh

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- people are very confident - from a young age and that is why,

0:08:59 > 0:09:03- because of the Eisteddfod

0:09:03 > 0:09:11- and growing up in that system. - It's so important to perform

0:09:11 > 0:09:20- regularly to gain confidence.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24- Riband For Those under 16 - was Eirlys Lovell-Jones

0:09:24 > 0:09:27- from Cardiff.

0:10:03 > 0:10:04- pieces by Rachmaninoff

0:10:04 > 0:10:09- and Debussy was Tomos Boyles.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- with her recital on the cornet.

0:11:21 > 0:11:27- was Serenni Morgan from Llanishen.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- the winner of the Instrumental Blue - Riband for those aged under 16

0:11:59 > 0:12:01- is Ela Haf Williams.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05- I didn't expect that at all. - I'm so happy.

0:12:05 > 0:12:12- I won at the Urdd - Eisteddfod in 2014.

0:12:12 > 0:12:21- And last Sunday, we won - with Deiniolen Silver Band.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49- for young reciters. - We'll go to the world

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- of Cerdd Dant and hear a few

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- Alaw Werin performances.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28- and I'm here today on the Eisteddfod - Maes to be accepted into the Gorsedd

0:13:28 > 0:13:32- after winning the Lady Herbert - Lewis prize last year

0:13:32 > 0:13:36- at the Maldwyn Eisteddfod. - I've chosen Gwyfan as my Gorsedd

0:13:36 > 0:13:39- name because I come from a small - village called Llangwyfan

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- in Denbighshire and my father's

0:13:42 > 0:13:45- middle name is Gwyfan. - What I really enjoy

0:13:45 > 0:13:46- about the Eisteddfod

0:13:46 > 0:13:48- are the competitions. - I've been competing for many years

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- at the National Eisteddfod. - It's an opportunity

0:13:51 > 0:13:53- to make new friends and it

0:13:53 > 0:13:55- provides wonderful opportunities. - So I'm very grateful

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- to the Eisteddfod.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07- the performances, the presentations - and seminars, you need to get

0:14:07 > 0:14:11- organized at the beginning of a week - like this as you read

0:14:11 > 0:14:14- through the programme to create some - kind of specific timetable

0:14:14 > 0:14:19- as you go from tent to tent. - The Children's Poet Laureate has

0:14:19 > 0:14:21- to be organized.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25- Hello, Anni. - How are you?

0:14:25 > 0:14:27- Are you organized - as you go from place

0:14:27 > 0:14:29- to place? - Yes.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32- I've got a little diary and my phone - to keep on top of things.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34- And what's happening next? - Today I'm in the Lolfa Len and we're

0:14:34 > 0:14:37- having a rhyming eisteddfod. - With the children as part

0:14:37 > 0:14:39- of your role?

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- Yes, as Children's Poet Laureate. - It will be a lot of fun.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44- Has there been much interest?

0:14:44 > 0:14:46- Yes and tonight I'll - be going to

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- the glamping site. - Posh!

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- Yes and we'll be having some - fun there with poetry.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54- There's plenty to do all week - and I'm really looking forward

0:14:54 > 0:14:57- to the Stomp Fach on Thursday. - The Stomp is popular, isn't it?

0:14:57 > 0:14:58- So is that children - competing?

0:14:58 > 0:15:00- No. - Experienced poets will be competing,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02- but it will be children - in the audience and they'll

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- decide who goes through

0:15:05 > 0:15:08- the round and who wins. - So it's more pressure

0:15:08 > 0:15:10- than any other poetry competition. - And there will be a proper

0:15:10 > 0:15:13- Stomp as well.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14- Yes. - I'm competing in the Cerdd Dant

0:15:14 > 0:15:17- Stomp for the first time.

0:15:17 > 0:15:18- Not for children. - It says "Unsuitable

0:15:18 > 0:15:20- For Children" on the poster.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- Does it? - Yes.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- But it's very popular. - I'm hoping to come over and see it.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29- Last year i was standing on a bale - of hay outside looking in on them.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32- I'll be in a better place this year. - And what about the Maes

0:15:32 > 0:15:34- and the Eisteddfod in general?

0:15:34 > 0:15:35- It's wonderful. - It's large and long so it takes time

0:15:35 > 0:15:39- to walk from one end to the other,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41- but it's wonderful. - You're very busy.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44- Yes. - I have to go now.

0:15:44 > 0:15:50- Enjoy your week. - Bye, Anni.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36- first prize.

0:19:36 > 0:19:43- Yippee!

0:19:52 > 0:19:55- under 12, there was then a chance - for performers a little bit older

0:19:55 > 0:19:58- to have a chance to

0:19:58 > 0:20:08- shine in the Pavilion.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13- get into the boat and go on ahead - of him to the other side,

0:20:13 > 0:20:17- while he dismissed the crowd. - After he had dismissed them,

0:20:17 > 0:20:22- he went up on a mountainside

0:20:22 > 0:20:28- by himself to pray. - Later that night, he was there

0:20:28 > 0:20:33- alone, and the boat was already - a considerable distance from land,

0:20:33 > 0:20:37- buffeted by the waves

0:20:37 > 0:20:42- because the wind was against it. - Shortly before dawn Jesus went out

0:20:42 > 0:20:46- to them, walking on the lake. - When the disciples saw him

0:20:49 > 0:20:52- and cried out in fear. - But Jesus immediately said

0:20:53 > 0:21:04- "Take courage!" - "It is I.

0:21:04 > 0:21:12- "Don't be afraid." - "Lord, if it's you."

0:21:12 > 0:21:18- Peter replied, - "Tell me to come

0:21:18 > 0:21:24- to you on the water." - Immediately Jesus reached

0:21:24 > 0:21:29- out his hand and caught him. - "You of little faith," he said,

0:21:29 > 0:21:35- "why did you doubt?" - And when they climbed into the boat,

0:21:35 > 0:21:38- the wind died down. - Then those who were in the boat

0:21:38 > 0:21:43- worshiped him, saying,

0:21:43 > 0:21:52- "Truly you are the Son of God."

0:22:04 > 0:22:11- We have to stand up for her - Draw attention to her

0:22:11 > 0:22:15- problems on posters

0:22:15 > 0:22:24- Suffer the monoglot English adverts. - And all to be treated equally.

0:22:24 > 0:22:34- We have to play a game - Of discovering Welsh speakers

0:22:34 > 0:22:42- In the unlikeliest corners, - who often don't stand out.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44- We have to visit shops - And see the Welsh in smallprint

0:22:44 > 0:22:46- (if at all) - Beneath the lines

0:22:46 > 0:22:48- of English - Because two have

0:22:48 > 0:22:53- complained

0:22:53 > 0:22:58- that it's there at all - And they couldn't find their Flora.

0:22:58 > 0:23:07- And all to be treated equally. - We listen to comments

0:23:07 > 0:23:11- about our vibrant language - That it's not as important

0:23:11 > 0:23:13- as European languages

0:23:13 > 0:23:19- And that it can't be used on holiday - We have to phone managers

0:23:19 > 0:23:21- And send - letters which are never answered

0:23:21 > 0:23:24- We have to snarl, threaten - Sometimes swear

0:23:24 > 0:23:25- Smile, laugh and keep - asking the question

0:23:25 > 0:23:27- like a broken record - When a shop

0:23:27 > 0:23:29- is renovated - And does not use the language

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- of our forefathers

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- On their brand new signs. - To be equal one day

0:23:34 > 0:23:44- In our own country.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54- forward to the celebrating

0:23:54 > 0:23:55- the new Archdruid. - We will also be analysing

0:23:55 > 0:23:57- the Crown-winning piece before - being enchanted by performances

0:23:57 > 0:24:01- from the instrumentalists.

0:24:20 > 0:24:21- Welcome back.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24- On Monday, here at the Eisteddfod - in Abergavenny, there

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- was an opportunity for the first - time to see and enjoy one of the

0:24:27 > 0:24:29- oldest traditions of the festival. - The Gorsedd was established back

0:24:29 > 0:24:31- in 1792 by Iolo Morganwg. - He began the traditions that

0:24:31 > 0:24:34- are still honoured today. - The robes are an integral

0:24:34 > 0:24:40- part of the pageant. - It was wonderful to see

0:24:40 > 0:24:42- everyone in their full

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- splendour on the Maes today.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52- year's Crowning ceremony. - It's one of three ceremonies for

0:24:52 > 0:24:56- which the Gorsedd take to the stage. - And, yes, the crown was awarded

0:24:56 > 0:24:59- to a worthy winner. - This year's beautiful crown was made

0:24:59 > 0:25:04- by local artist, Deborah Edwards.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14- the Crown this year. - Thank you all for letting us

0:25:14 > 0:25:17- see your work and take a look at

0:25:17 > 0:25:21- your thoughts and feelings. - A sign of a good

0:25:21 > 0:25:26- collection, a quality - collection, is that it is difficult

0:25:26 > 0:25:31- to decide which lines to quote. - But I do not have

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- to worry as it is a - pleasure to announce that the three

0:25:34 > 0:25:41- of us agreed that Carreg Lefn - deserves the Crown at

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- this year's Eisteddfod.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18- who is Carreg Lefn?

0:26:18 > 0:26:30- Some of you will surely know her. - She is from Rhostryfan.

0:26:35 > 0:26:45- Elinor Gwynn lives.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56- Yes, she is here.

0:27:07 > 0:27:12- Let us go back to the halfway mark - Or the three quarter mark, perhaps.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16- Back further than - where the green path

0:27:16 > 0:27:21- With its satin elegance - beneath our feet

0:27:21 > 0:27:28- And the stone walls sustained us. - Back to that scrag of land

0:27:28 > 0:27:30- Where footfall had worn - a smooth knot over the years

0:27:30 > 0:27:32- Where it was starting to fall apart, - Into clean furrows between

0:27:32 > 0:27:35- the clumps of thorn bushes. - Their branches muffled the noise

0:27:35 > 0:27:39- from the cross-winds - Distorting them into

0:27:39 > 0:27:44- bedraggled rags around us.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53- that we are lucky - in Wales to be able

0:27:53 > 0:27:55- to present our work - and receive criticism

0:27:55 > 0:27:56- and have

0:27:56 > 0:27:58- our work analysed. - That is something wonderful.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01- You have competed in the past - and have benefited from that.

0:28:01 > 0:28:02- Yes, certainly. - I remember the first time that

0:28:02 > 0:28:06- I tried for the Crown, one - judge put me in third place, another

0:28:06 > 0:28:09- in second and another in the first

0:28:09 > 0:28:11- group. - And it is clear from the

0:28:11 > 0:28:13- adjudication that your background, - the environment and travelling, has

0:28:13 > 0:28:16- influenced the work. - Yes, but it is not

0:28:16 > 0:28:19- just a poem about the

0:28:19 > 0:28:23- environment. - That is what I thought I would write

0:28:23 > 0:28:28- but it does describe a - journey but it is a journey

0:28:28 > 0:28:30- through intense experiences.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33- It is similar to going for a walk. - When you go for a walk,

0:28:33 > 0:28:36- you will see the various - scenes and views and

0:28:36 > 0:28:42- have various thoughts.

0:28:42 > 0:28:50- So there is an influence.

0:28:56 > 0:28:57- Congratulations.

0:28:57 > 0:29:01- Thank you very much.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06- the winning piece of work - in the company of poet Llyr Gwyn

0:29:06 > 0:29:08- Lewis.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10- What are your first impressions? - Well I have only just

0:29:10 > 0:29:13- seen this and in a way,

0:29:13 > 0:29:15- it is hard to say straightaway. - But listening to the judges,

0:29:15 > 0:29:18- they said that they were poems that

0:29:18 > 0:29:19- required a lot of readings. - They are impressionistic poems

0:29:19 > 0:29:22- and they are full of nature. - Some of the poems require a lot

0:29:22 > 0:29:26- of reading and analysing.

0:29:26 > 0:29:34- But that is a good thing. - There is a lot of depth and layers.

0:29:34 > 0:29:43- One piece is almost - like a short story in a poem.

0:29:45 > 0:29:51- in a way. - Obviously, she has a background

0:29:51 > 0:29:53- in the environment and nature

0:29:53 > 0:29:55- and that comes to the fore. - Yes, certainly, that comes

0:29:55 > 0:29:59- through all of the poems. - I think good poems are abstract

0:29:59 > 0:30:06- and tangible at the same time. - And that is certainly

0:30:06 > 0:30:10- what we get here. - The subject was Paths

0:30:10 > 0:30:13- and you have the Paths of nature

0:30:13 > 0:30:16- and the Paths of life. - And she manages to say that in far

0:30:16 > 0:30:19- more original and striking ways. - But I think that is what you have

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- here, that personal

0:30:22 > 0:30:27- journey through life. - You have enjoyed them?

0:30:27 > 0:30:36- Yes.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57- from the band HMS Morris.

0:30:57 > 0:30:58- We are at the Eisteddfod. - I love coming to the Eisteddfod

0:30:58 > 0:31:07- because you discover new bands - and get to listen to bands you have

0:31:07 > 0:31:11- not heared from for a long time. - These are some of the bands that

0:31:11 > 0:31:15- you can see over the next week. - On Wednesday, head over

0:31:15 > 0:31:18- to Maes B to see some

0:31:18 > 0:31:22- of the best new bands. - On Thursday night, if you are over

0:31:22 > 0:31:27- 25, head to see Eden

0:31:27 > 0:31:30- at the Cymdeithas yr Iaith gig. - But don't stay there too long

0:31:30 > 0:31:37- because we will be in Maes B.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43- happening in Maes D and there

0:31:43 > 0:31:53- are Cymdeithas yr Iaith gigs. - On Saturday, to finish it all,

0:31:53 > 0:31:57- head over to Maes B.

0:31:57 > 0:32:06- It'll be a great night.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20- by Benjamin Britten. - And the girls were asked to perform

0:32:20 > 0:32:24- a piece by Michael Head,
