0:00:28 > 0:00:35- Welcome back to the National - Eisteddfod. These are beautiful

0:00:35 > 0:00:44- pictures of Abergavenny, which has - welcomed as during the course of the

0:00:44 > 0:00:51- week. It has been a wonderful week - and it has been good to have you

0:00:51 > 0:00:55- with us. One of the main - competitions of the day was the

0:00:55 > 0:01:03- David Ellis Memorial Prize. Let's - look back over the highlights.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23- # On an old lonely rock

0:01:23 > 0:01:24- # In a dark forest

0:01:24 > 0:01:26- # Her heart breaking - # Sat a pretty girl

0:01:26 > 0:01:31- # She looked out over the edge - # To the lake below

0:01:31 > 0:01:43- # But she saw someone's face - # And fainted in shock

0:01:43 > 0:01:48- # But she saw someone's face

0:01:48 > 0:01:58- # And fainted in shock

0:02:00 > 0:02:05- # Lamb of God - # That takest away

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- the sins of the world

0:02:08 > 0:02:17- # In thy mercy grant them rest

0:02:22 > 0:02:30- # Lamb of God - # That takest away

0:02:30 > 0:02:39- the sins of the world

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- # Lamb of God

0:02:42 > 0:02:52- # In thy mercy grant them rest

0:02:53 > 0:03:03- # In thy mercy grant them rest #

0:03:06 > 0:03:08- # It may have been a folly

0:03:08 > 0:03:09- # This life that passeth by

0:03:09 > 0:03:25- # A beauty wasted wholly - # A being doomed to die

0:03:40 > 0:03:51- # A love lines now rotten - # A bloom so soon decayed

0:03:51 > 0:04:01- # That dawns and cannot die. #

0:04:24 > 0:04:26- the joy of their life

0:04:26 > 0:04:36- # The joy of their life. #

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- Those are the four competitors who - won their individual competitions

0:05:11 > 0:05:16- and were selected to go on for the - Blue Riband competition. Now let

0:05:16 > 0:05:22- find out who won the Memorial prize - this year.

0:05:22 > 0:05:40- Who has won? I'm sure you've all got - your own opinions. Kees Huysmans.

0:05:41 > 0:05:53- Congratulations to him. The bass - from Lampeter. Now let's hear from

0:05:53 > 0:06:28- him.

0:06:44 > 0:07:02- # No, her heart is closed to me - # She doesn't love me. #

0:07:10 > 0:07:16- That was the winning performance - from the man from the Netherlands.

0:07:16 > 0:07:24- He now lives in Lampeter and joins - us backstage.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29- Congratulations. I sent a lot of - relief. Definitely. I've been

0:07:29 > 0:07:41- competing since 1997 and it is - amazing to get an opportunity to

0:07:41 > 0:07:46- compete in the Blue Riband - competition. To have won it is

0:07:46 > 0:07:54- wonderful. I am so relieved and I'm - really enjoying it.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57- This is the last big competition for - singers.

0:07:57 > 0:08:05- I came here from overseas years and - years ago and I didn't even know

0:08:05 > 0:08:11- Wales existed. Now the people of - Wales are telling me I am the best

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- singer in the festival. I'm so - proud.

0:08:13 > 0:08:19- It's amazing. The adjudicators were - very pleased with your performance,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23- saying your performance was - terrific.

0:08:23 > 0:08:29- I always try and do my best in - everything I do. I always try to

0:08:29 > 0:08:36- create an atmosphere. Lovely that - the adjudicators appreciate the work

0:08:36 > 0:08:43- I've put in. I know it's all about - taking part but when you win, it is

0:08:43 > 0:08:51- nice. - You've been competing in small

0:08:51 > 0:08:59- Eisteddfodau and a lot of work has - led to this.

0:08:59 > 0:09:04- The boys used to tell me to sing as - a soloist. I started competing in

0:09:04 > 0:09:13- the smaller Eisteddfodau. Singing - and competing feels strange to me

0:09:13 > 0:09:18- that it means that you always try - your best and always try to improve

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- your best and always try to improve - your interpretation of the song.

0:09:21 > 0:09:30- That is the point. There's nothing - better than reaching that point.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32- And singing on stage must be quite a - thrill.

0:09:32 > 0:09:40- It is. To be honest, I have to say - the new Pavilion is easier to sing

0:09:40 > 0:09:45- in than the old one was. As a - singer, it is a more natural

0:09:45 > 0:09:53- acoustic. I remember I had a shock - before but I didn't know what to

0:09:53 > 0:09:56- expect.- It is definitely an - improvement.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- The medal looks good around your - neck.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04- Congratulations. It was a great - pleasure.

0:10:04 > 0:10:13- A lovely interview. Congratulations - to Kees Huysmans. We have another

0:10:13 > 0:10:18- result for the main dance - competition, the Lois Blake Memorial

0:10:18 > 0:10:26- Prize. We had two parties competing - and I don't believe this has

0:10:26 > 0:10:32- happened before but Les Morris and - Morwel Palmer couldn't reach a

0:10:32 > 0:10:38- decision on an overall winner so - this year 's prize is going to be

0:10:38 > 0:10:45- divided. A split first place between - Dawnswyr Talog and Dawnswyr

0:10:45 > 0:10:53- Nantgarw. I'm not sure how they will - sort that out, six months each,

0:10:53 > 0:10:58- maybe. Plenty more to come. Join us - after the break.

0:11:24 > 0:11:44- Alan Quinn is crowned bard -- Elinor - Glyn. Guto Dafydd... Eirug

0:11:44 > 0:11:53- Salisbury. This year's Musician's - Medal goes to Gareth Olubunmi

0:11:53 > 0:12:03- Hughes. Hefin Robinson from - Carmarthen.

0:12:03 > 0:12:13- Dic Jones, more than anyone else, - would be relieved to hear that we

0:12:13 > 0:12:22- have a worthy winner. His name is - Aneirin Karadog.

0:12:22 > 0:12:33- Just some of the main winners this - week. There have been winners in all

0:12:33 > 0:12:41- of those categories. It has been a - memorable week for all of us,

0:12:41 > 0:12:48- including Elin Elis, the organiser - who joins us now. We had a winner in

0:12:48 > 0:12:52- all of the main ceremonies. That - must be a relief for you as an

0:12:52 > 0:12:59- organiser. - It is. And I've had the pleasure of

0:12:59 > 0:13:04- speaking to them all. - Especially because this year we've

0:13:04 > 0:13:11- got a special Chair in memory of Dic - Jones. We had the Crown designed by

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- a local crafts person so it would be - heartbreaking if these important

0:13:14 > 0:13:21- things when wasted. - The people of Abergavenny funded the

0:13:21 > 0:13:35- Crown and the prize that go with the - Chair. Everyone was just so proud of

0:13:35 > 0:13:41- the event and quietly I knew that we - had a winner and everyone would be

0:13:41 > 0:13:46- pleased. - We've got some lovely images of the

0:13:46 > 0:13:53- civilian. It has been making some - headlines. The pink Pavilion has

0:13:53 > 0:14:01- gone and people are already - forgetting about it, and getting

0:14:01 > 0:14:07- accustomed to the new Pavilion. - People weren't sure to begin with

0:14:07 > 0:14:15- but we've been working hard and - speaking to experts in lighting,

0:14:15 > 0:14:21- sound, technical elements. We have - been talking around a table and when

0:14:21 > 0:14:27- you have so many experts having an - input and it pays off in the end,

0:14:27 > 0:14:35- it's a great thing. And throughout - the week we've had different things

0:14:35 > 0:14:42- happening and people start to forget - about the pink Pavilion because it

0:14:42 > 0:14:48- is the experience that matters. - And Kees Huysmans, the Blue Riband

0:14:48 > 0:14:53- winner, said he enjoyed it. The - concerts have also been very

0:14:53 > 0:14:59- successful. - Yes, they've given us an opportunity

0:14:59 > 0:15:03- to use the new facilities. The - lighting has been fantastic and the

0:15:03 > 0:15:11- acoustics are great. In a way it is - a theatre. There is nothing

0:15:11 > 0:15:18- obstructing the view. It is more - comfortable and the performers and

0:15:18 > 0:15:23- the audiences enjoy it more. - I've got some good news for you.

0:15:23 > 0:15:33- Today's figures. 19,000 visitors, - the most on a Saturday since 2009.

0:15:33 > 0:15:40- Fantastic. Great. I know we had - great visitor numbers. Maybe not

0:15:40 > 0:15:47- Monday because it was raining but we - still had 14,000 on Monday.- It is a

0:15:47 > 0:15:54- great thing for Monmouthshire. - 297,000 over the week. The region

0:15:54 > 0:16:04- has really welcomed the Eisteddfod. - We got a team of volunteers and the

0:16:04 > 0:16:09- local people have been great. It has - been lovely seeing people come

0:16:09 > 0:16:13- through the doors and give us - positive feedback. It has been

0:16:13 > 0:16:21- great. We had a lovely atmosphere - and people have come to me, praising

0:16:21 > 0:16:28- the Eisteddfod. - It must be lovely as an organiser.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- People have worked so hard and you - want people to enjoy it. If they

0:16:32 > 0:16:38- come to you to tell you that they - have then, it is the I sing on the

0:16:38 > 0:16:42- cake. - Elin Elis, thanks for now. Over the

0:16:42 > 0:16:48- next few minutes we will be looking - back at some of the days

0:16:48 > 0:16:55- competitions and let's start with - the Open Instrumental Group.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54- me again embrace you

0:18:54 > 0:19:06- # As once in May. #

0:19:17 > 0:19:18- # Then softly come unbound

0:19:18 > 0:19:28- # All myst'ries to unfold.#

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- # The bushes are left stripped naked

0:19:31 > 0:19:35- # Come closer, soul to soul - # Oh, I fear that the

0:19:35 > 0:19:41- night will also steal

0:19:41 > 0:19:51- # You from me. #

0:20:05 > 0:20:06- # In the rocks, left behind

0:20:06 > 0:20:16- # She is a different Winni. #

0:20:21 > 0:20:23- # My lover is like the sparks - # Sometimes great

0:20:23 > 0:20:25- and sometimes silly

0:20:25 > 0:20:27- # My lover is like the candle - # A secret comfort

0:20:27 > 0:20:29- when it's dark

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- # But the day after - # There are wax tears

0:20:32 > 0:21:02- on the pillow- # In the rocks, left behind

0:21:02 > 0:21:09- # She is a different Winni. #

0:21:18 > 0:21:22- Elin Elis, looking back on the - festival, do you think there is room

0:21:22 > 0:21:26- for improvement? - There is always room for

0:21:26 > 0:21:31- improvement. Nobody is perfect. Now - we are going to look ahead for the

0:21:31 > 0:21:40- Anglesey Eisteddfod. - There have been changes, such as the

0:21:40 > 0:21:43- Wednesday male voice choir - competition today and there were

0:21:43 > 0:21:48- changes to the Osborne Roberts. Are - you happy with these changes?

0:21:48 > 0:21:54- If you look at the good-sized - audience and the quality on stage,

0:21:54 > 0:22:02- personally I was very proud of the - quality on stage. This year we had

0:22:02 > 0:22:06- some great tenors and baritones. The - men were great. In the past it has

0:22:06 > 0:22:10- been the other way round. We have - got some great young singers coming

0:22:10 > 0:22:19- through as well, and people in the - over 25 categories.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22- As the organiser of this very - successful festival, I'd like to

0:22:22 > 0:22:27- congratulate you. - Don't go away because we've got

0:22:27 > 0:22:31- plenty left to come before the end - of the programme. Join us after the

0:22:31 > 0:22:31- break.

0:22:45 > 0:22:57- Welcome back to the National - Eisteddfod. It is the end of a

0:22:57 > 0:23:03- memorable week. We will take a look - back at the week now with Dr Elin

0:23:03 > 0:23:07- Jones, the President of the - festival. It has been a week to

0:23:07 > 0:23:13- remember. Have you enjoyed yourself? - Yes, just about. I have had a chance

0:23:13 > 0:23:17- to catch up with friends and - socialise and see everyone enjoying

0:23:17 > 0:23:22- themselves. It was wonderful to see - everyone gathering and enjoying

0:23:22 > 0:23:32- themselves.- You were on stage this - afternoon giving your speech, what

0:23:32 > 0:23:36- was your message?- The message I was - trying to put forward was how

0:23:36 > 0:23:41- important it is to remember how the - National Eisteddfod has changed over

0:23:41 > 0:23:49- the past century. It was a very - different world back then. And they

0:23:49 > 0:23:56- mentioned the history of the Welsh - language in this area. Hopefully the

0:23:56 > 0:24:00- National Eisteddfod can continue to - help the Welsh language. It means

0:24:00 > 0:24:04- different things to different - people. There are those competing,

0:24:04 > 0:24:12- those helping, and so I was putting - forward the way that it means

0:24:12 > 0:24:16- different things to everyone but - everyone enjoys themselves.- We

0:24:16 > 0:24:21- mentioned at the start of the week - the rich history of this area. Lady

0:24:21 > 0:24:33- Llanover and so on.- Well, the Welsh - language was so important to Lady

0:24:33 > 0:24:38- Llanover and her husband. It is - important to remember that the pair

0:24:38 > 0:24:53- of them worked in a partnership. - They worked very hard. We had a

0:24:53 > 0:25:03- fantastic night on Thursday night.

0:25:04 > 0:25:12- It was unforgettable.- It is - wonderful what is happening around

0:25:12 > 0:25:17- the National Eisteddfod and the way - that it affects the town and the

0:25:17 > 0:25:27- area. Will it leave its mark?- Well I - hope so. One of the best thing for

0:25:27 > 0:25:36- me was to meet a former pupil. She - is now the director of education for

0:25:36 > 0:25:42- Monmouth. That was fantastic to meet - the and we will now keep in touch.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46- But it is through her, I met a - number of council officials and they

0:25:46 > 0:25:52- all said how much they have enjoyed - the festival and how much benefit it

0:25:52 > 0:26:02- has made for the area, socially and - economically. I was so pleased to

0:26:02 > 0:26:14- hear that.- We have also enjoyed - hearing your accent.- I am one of the

0:26:14 > 0:26:28- few remaining that speaks in this - accent. As we have lost respect to

0:26:28 > 0:26:44- our language in the 19th century and - then began speaking English

0:26:44 > 0:26:54- instead... That is what happened. I - went to chapel while I was growing

0:26:54 > 0:26:58- up and I was the only when speaking - Welsh. Everyone else spoke English

0:26:58 > 0:27:02- with their parents. My parents were - criticised for speaking Welsh with

0:27:02 > 0:27:15- me. But they said I would -- they - said that I would be held back by

0:27:15 > 0:27:22- speaking world. We were ashamed of - our language and accent. So it is

0:27:22 > 0:27:41- important that we are proud of the - language.- We have enjoyed hearing

0:27:41 > 0:27:49- all the stories. Thank you joining - us. And thank you for the welcome.- I

0:27:49 > 0:27:55- am glad that you have enjoyed - yourself.- As I mentioned, we are now

0:27:55 > 0:28:06- looking back at some of the - competitions of the day and next we

0:28:06 > 0:28:09- will enjoy the old songs Solo.- competitions of the day and next we

0:29:01 > 0:29:02- # Peaceful island far away

0:29:02 > 0:29:12- # Where reigns serene immortal day

0:30:06 > 0:30:14- It has been a week to remember for - you.- Yes, I have had a great week.

0:30:14 > 0:30:22- It was great to be involved in the - ceremony. It has been a great week.

0:30:22 > 0:30:28- Where do you keep all these prizes? - I am not sure. My mother will put

0:30:28 > 0:30:41- them somewhere.- Congratulations.

0:30:50 > 0:31:03- as a Welshman, not a Brit. - The first Welsh suicide bomber ever.

0:31:03 > 0:31:13- Home is the battlefield now.

0:31:26 > 0:31:32- Another successful weekly him. After - the break, we will be turning to the

0:31:32 > 0:31:35- choirs. Bah.

0:31:46 > 0:31:54- Welcome back the National - Eisteddfod. It's a wonderful

0:31:54 > 0:32:03- evening. It's been a wonderful week. - It's been a week full of

0:32:03 > 0:32:11- competitions. And we've had plenty - of winners in the main ceremonies.

0:32:11 > 0:32:15- We now continue to look back at the - competitions of the day but first I

0:32:15 > 0:32:26- have two new guests.

0:32:30 > 0:32:36- We will take a look back at this - week first of all. Is this the first

0:32:36 > 0:32:44- time you have got sit down?- It feels - like it. I have been very busy,

0:32:44 > 0:32:53- going from ceremony to ceremony. I - have popped over to the Bilic Elf.

0:33:01 > 0:33:10- The it's been very enjoyable. I've - met a lot of people. A lot of people

0:33:10 > 0:33:14- have come at me and I don't know - them and they told me how much they

0:33:14 > 0:33:18- enjoyed the National Eisteddfod. - Looking forward to next year, you've

0:33:18 > 0:33:23- been wondering around and learning a - few things, what are the impressions

0:33:23 > 0:33:32- you had of this festival?- I'd like - to congratulate Frank and the team.

0:33:32 > 0:33:36- They have been very enthusiastic and - successful. The location was

0:33:36 > 0:33:46- remarkable. The town is very close - by. That has been wonderful. There

0:33:46 > 0:33:50- has been a wonderful feeling. There - is a different feeling to every

0:33:50 > 0:33:58- Eisteddfod. I know that we will put - on a memorable one next year but

0:33:58 > 0:34:04- congratulations on this one.- We will - have plenty of time to look back and

0:34:04 > 0:34:08- look forward over the coming - minutes. Now we will look back at

0:34:08 > 0:34:12- some of the competitions of the day. - We will now enjoy the big battle

0:34:12 > 0:34:23- that was between the male voice - choirs.

0:35:34 > 0:35:49- Congratulations.- Thank you it's - wonderful. I can't put into words.

0:35:49 > 0:35:53- It's six years since we competed and - we wanted to see if it is still do

0:35:53 > 0:36:02- it. It's wonderful. Fantastic.- I was - making notes while the judges were

0:36:02 > 0:36:07- talking. They enjoyed every note. - They had learnt the script I had

0:36:07 > 0:36:15- sent them. Fair play. I appreciate - that. But thank you to everyone.

0:36:15 > 0:36:21- These are the stars today.

0:37:13 > 0:37:23- # In a milking pail. #

0:37:24 > 0:37:34- Yeah, congratulations to call karma. - A number of remarkable performances

0:37:34 > 0:37:42- this week. The choirs are especially - good. And on Sunday afternoon

0:37:42 > 0:37:48- there's a big announcement, to name - the best choir of the week. We will

0:37:48 > 0:37:55- now hear who won the prize.- So it - gives me great pleasure to announce

0:37:55 > 0:38:10- on behalf of the team that the choir - of the festival 2016 is Cordydd.

0:42:22 > 0:42:28- The judges

0:42:34 > 0:42:39- As it was very difficult.- I'm very - proud that we were able to come and

0:42:39 > 0:42:45- compete. I'm sure that is what she - would have wanted. Fair play, we are

0:42:45 > 0:42:50- here. And we've worked really hard. - So thank you so much to hew as well.

0:42:50 > 0:42:58- Congratulations and thank you for - the chat. Congratulations to them.

0:42:58 > 0:43:05- There are lots of high points that - we have had over the week, the.

0:43:05 > 0:43:14- Let's look at your personal - highlights?- The children's item on

0:43:14 > 0:43:21- Sunday.

0:43:21 > 0:43:30- There was not a dry eye in the - house. That was a highlight.

0:43:30 > 0:43:41- Thursday night in the Pavilion.- That - was very different.- Yes, it is great

0:43:41 > 0:43:47- to experiment.- As someone who will - be involved in the preparations for

0:43:47 > 0:43:53- next year, you mentioned every - Eisteddfod is different, what can we

0:43:53 > 0:43:58- expect in Anglesey?- Every Eisteddfod - tries to pioneer in some ways. And

0:43:58 > 0:44:07- that might was memorable. - Apparently. I'm regretting not

0:44:07 > 0:44:16- going. Over the coming months, we'll - be thinking how we can put an extra

0:44:16 > 0:44:20- spark into the Eisteddfod. There's a - great group on Anglesey, they are

0:44:20 > 0:44:28- full of ideas. Incrementing those - ideas will be the challenge now.

0:44:28 > 0:44:32- Where are we now as far as - preparations? There is a full year

0:44:32 > 0:44:44- to go.- There is not as much time - these days. It is two years, three

0:44:44 > 0:44:51- at the most. We are lucky on - Anglesey that it is easier to raise

0:44:51 > 0:44:55- money than it is in areas like this. - They have been incredibly successful

0:44:55 > 0:45:11- here. We are headed via target. Such - is the raising money, it's that we

0:45:11 > 0:45:21- need the enthusiasm and that can - really help.- You're so close of the

0:45:21 > 0:45:26- border year. You have to do a lot of - work to promote the language

0:45:26 > 0:45:31- locally. How much of a long-term - effect will be Eisteddfod have?- It

0:45:31 > 0:45:35- will have a big effort. The county - council is committed to establishing

0:45:35 > 0:45:43- a language centre. That'll be - brilliant. There is a lot of

0:45:43 > 0:45:53- interest. We must remember that all - these children I mentioned earlier

0:45:53 > 0:45:57- will remember this for generations. - It has given them a huge boost. It

0:45:57 > 0:46:03- has given us a boost as far as - confidence in the area.- Thank you

0:46:03 > 0:46:06- and congratulations on a memorable - unsuccessful Eisteddfod. We are

0:46:06 > 0:46:21- looking forward to next year. Well, - we started the week with the piece

0:46:21 > 0:46:23- by Robat Powel.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30- August they all came - Hordes of visitors

0:46:30 > 0:46:32- seeking fun and fame - The wind subsided to a peaceful

0:46:32 > 0:46:34- balm Leaving a chasm

0:46:34 > 0:46:36- On this park, so calm. - Once crammed with life

0:46:36 > 0:46:39- now solitude must - bring, a sullen silence

0:46:39 > 0:46:44- over dirt and dust. - Despite that, the barn

0:46:44 > 0:46:46- is filled tonight - With the crops of our

0:46:46 > 0:46:49- culture's delight. - Brand new odes and so many a song

0:46:49 > 0:46:52- Still echoes here, proud and strong - The memories are all stored safe

0:46:52 > 0:46:55- Against the winter's harsh embrace. - What growth is this

0:46:55 > 0:46:58- but our offspring - Chaired as bards,

0:46:58 > 0:47:06- their words we sing. - Bold sunshine and busy, busy bees No

0:47:06 > 0:47:16- sour faces from any of these.

0:47:17 > 0:47:20- a choir in full throat - Surging in their summer

0:47:20 > 0:47:22- of sweet notes. - For Elinor, there

0:47:22 > 0:47:24- was a shining crown - Her pathways gained

0:47:24 > 0:47:32- her great reknown. - A little one with head held high

0:47:32 > 0:47:35- Watched his dad win a medal nigh - And there was someone

0:47:35 > 0:47:38- by and by To reward his

0:47:38 > 0:47:39- Smiles with a kind eye. - It pulls us in and lays its snare

0:47:39 > 0:47:45- A field of great emotional fare - Tears are shed on every single day

0:47:45 > 0:47:49- We weep and weep with abandon gay - And between the youthful

0:47:49 > 0:47:51- voices came - A hundred year

0:47:51 > 0:47:53- old girl, just the same. - Above the land the sun begins

0:47:53 > 0:47:55- to set - To close the fest,

0:47:55 > 0:47:58- but as we leave I'll bet

0:47:58 > 0:48:00- The seed of song we planted here - By Abergavenny will

0:48:00 > 0:48:03- last for year on year.
