0:00:06 > 0:00:08and the hottest ticket for any music lover.

0:00:08 > 0:00:15This year saw the most famous music festival celebrate its 40th birthday.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19200,000 people got the chance to see world-class musicians perform.

0:00:21 > 0:00:26Since 2007, BBC Introducing has supported unsigned

0:00:26 > 0:00:30and under-the-radar musicians, giving them radio play,

0:00:30 > 0:00:35the chance to record live sessions and the opportunity to play live at Radio 1's Big Weekend,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37T In The Park and Glastonbury.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45Introducing has helped launch the careers of Florence And The Machine,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Bombay Bicycle Club and The Ting Tings.

0:00:51 > 0:00:56At this year's Glastonbury Festival, 32 new acts were selected to play the Introducing Stage.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Now it's like hit me, bang!

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Glastonbury, isn't it? It's Glastonbury.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05We followed three of them - one for each day of the festival -

0:01:05 > 0:01:08as they prepared for the gig of a lifetime.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10I want to get out there and just give it some.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15Could playing Glastonbury propel them to stardom?

0:01:15 > 0:01:19I need to stay calm, and that's my biggest thing.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21I just have to stay calm.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34For Birmingham hip-hop group Da Mighty Elementz, the journey

0:01:34 > 0:01:38began a long way from the green fields of Glastonbury.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51DME have been together for ten years and enjoyed some success locally,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54supporting the Black Eyed Peas in 2000.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Getting national recognition has been tough.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05But after uploading a track to the Introducing website in November, things started looking up.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09I get a phone call, you know, "Do you want to do Glastonbury?"

0:02:09 > 0:02:12So I'm thinking, "Well, which prat is this?"

0:02:12 > 0:02:13You know what I mean?

0:02:13 > 0:02:16"Who's winding me up now?" sort of thing.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20You know what I mean? And when she said, sort of like,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23"This isn't no joke -

0:02:23 > 0:02:25"we really want you to do it."

0:02:25 > 0:02:28I said, "Steady on, love - I need to sit down."

0:02:28 > 0:02:30So the first thing I do, I tell Rise.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33He pretty much had the same reaction, you know.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36We were talking, "We need one more set, we need one more show."

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Then, bang, out of nowhere, gives the group life.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41We were going to do Glastonbury.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44# Yo

0:02:44 > 0:02:46# I come through raging

0:02:46 > 0:02:47# With all guns blazing

0:02:47 > 0:02:50# Aiming a shot at those who underrate it

0:02:50 > 0:02:53# The flows are the rating Co-ordinating

0:02:53 > 0:02:55# You're going against nature... #

0:02:55 > 0:02:59'It's been a long time coming because, to be fair,'

0:02:59 > 0:03:02if you're an artist, you've got to believe in your stuff.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04'Not to be big-headed, but you have to feel it.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07'So it's fantastic the BBC recognise us.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10'That's why Introducing is good - it's a different route.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13'We did traditional routes - urban music stations.'

0:03:13 > 0:03:14We just couldn't get anywhere.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17We went to Introducing and they gave it the ear.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19They listened to it, and put it out.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22'They didn't have to give it to the people at Glastonbury.'

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Look where we are now - we got the show.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28But they're not living the rock and roll lifestyle just yet.

0:03:28 > 0:03:33With young families and mortgages to pay, the lads all work day jobs.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38Reuben, aka DJ Rise, spends his days installing credit-card machines.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42'Couldn't be further away from the dreams and hopes of performing'

0:03:42 > 0:03:43at places like Glastonbury,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46because this is our nine-to-five, or my nine-to-five,

0:03:46 > 0:03:49and this is what I do on a daily basis to keep me sane.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52The chances of making it big in anything is slim to none,

0:03:52 > 0:03:56so you need something to kind of like keep you on a level.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59It doesn't stop me hoping and dreaming at the same time.

0:03:59 > 0:04:00It keeps me grounded,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04because it reminds me what I have to do on a day-to-day basis.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06That's what we all aim to achieve -

0:04:06 > 0:04:10wanting to be a musician, and to be an artist full-time

0:04:10 > 0:04:14and just live the dream, basically.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16# 5,000 miles away We wind the clocks at night

0:04:16 > 0:04:17# To hear the arms in motion

0:04:17 > 0:04:19# Psychedelic, leave you hypnotised

0:04:19 > 0:04:21# We utilise, five guys Five times synchronise

0:04:21 > 0:04:24# We knew the time before sundials existed... #

0:04:24 > 0:04:25It's a bit mind-blowing.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I don't think a day don't go by where we're thinking,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31"We're actually being asked to play at Glastonbury this year."

0:04:31 > 0:04:34And all the focus is just really on that,

0:04:34 > 0:04:38but at the same time, it hasn't sunk in that we're actually playing at Glastonbury,

0:04:38 > 0:04:40which is absolutely nuts.

0:04:40 > 0:04:41# Yo! I'm on the ground like CTU

0:04:41 > 0:04:45# When your CTU want a link like a CPU... #

0:04:45 > 0:04:49As excited as the lads may be about the gig, they've also got a few reservations.

0:04:49 > 0:04:54Playing a festival is a far cry from the venues they usually play,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57and they're not exactly happy campers.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01I'm trying to get the whole concept of camping, and then performing,

0:05:01 > 0:05:02and then coming back to camping.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05- So... Yeah...it's... - It's going to be...

0:05:05 > 0:05:07It's a whole load of new...

0:05:07 > 0:05:09- It's a challenge.- It is a challenge.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13- Because we don't... Well, I'm not a camper.- Yeah, we're city boys.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17I like my creature comforts. I like electricity to be there, you know?

0:05:17 > 0:05:19TV, cooker...

0:05:19 > 0:05:21# From our tracks to our remixes

0:05:21 > 0:05:23# Give me a beat Ride it like Seabiscuit

0:05:23 > 0:05:25# I'm back now the heat is on... #

0:05:25 > 0:05:29You're trying to get some kip and you've got Worzel Gummidge falling over your tent.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34Trying to poke his dusty head through your flipping tent at half three at night.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38It's going to be a very, very shocking sort of thing. You know what I mean?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40# We got the beats, yo brothers It's moving

0:05:40 > 0:05:43# We keep it positive Smash through the negative

0:05:43 > 0:05:45# Throw your hands up Perform like you never did

0:05:45 > 0:05:47# We keep it moving We keep it grooving

0:05:47 > 0:05:49# We got the beats, yo brothers It's moving

0:05:49 > 0:05:51# We keep it positive Smash through the negative

0:05:51 > 0:05:54# Throw your hands up Perform like you never did. #

0:06:06 > 0:06:09It's Glastonbury 2010.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Despite now entering its fifth decade,

0:06:12 > 0:06:16the festival is set to be the biggest and best yet.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Festival-goers will get the chance to see hundreds of artists perform

0:06:19 > 0:06:24across the huge thousand-acre site.

0:06:24 > 0:06:25It's Thursday afternoon

0:06:25 > 0:06:29and after a gruelling seven hours, DME arrive on site.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32But it's not been the easiest of journeys.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33- BLEEP- hell, man.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Honestly, man, that's all I've got to say, man.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- So how was your journey? - Shocking. Shocking.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41- Gremlins, that's all I'm saying. - Shocking.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44What can I say, man? My car broke down, man. The alternator went.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47We ended up leaving Birmingham about 5pm.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51It was crazy. It was like we weren't meant to be here. But we're here now.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Just set up camp and get ready.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Get ready for tomorrow, really.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00But car troubles are the least of their worries.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02They seem to be one member short.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Reuben should be here tomorrow, so...

0:07:05 > 0:07:07He's had a long, stressful day

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- and now his car's playing up as well, so the curse...- Really?

0:07:10 > 0:07:12You're spreading the curse.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14He's got the suits, the hats, the equipment.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17So it's essential he comes tomorrow, and if he doesn't,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21there will be no show, literally. That's it, kaput. Job done.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25So fingers crossed, hopefully he'll be here tomorrow.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36But it's onwards and upwards, as the boys face their biggest challenge yet,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39finding their campsite and pitching their tents.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43LAUGHTER

0:07:45 > 0:07:47That's how you do it, boys!

0:07:51 > 0:07:53I'm just watching the experts.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57And then I'll sort my tent out afterwards.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00I've never slept in a tent before.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It's a learning experience for me, you know what I mean?

0:08:03 > 0:08:08Just watching them, man. I'm trying to get him to set up my tent for me.

0:08:08 > 0:08:09Josh has got the...

0:08:09 > 0:08:11He's got the skylight, man.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20An hour in and with everyone else's tent almost done,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24first-time camper Tony seems to be struggling.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28But with a little help from his friend, he finally has a bed for the night.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32However, our city boy still has his reservations.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35- I feel vulnerable, man.- I know.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37I just feel like a baby, man.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41You know? I just feel like all sensitive and stuff.

0:08:41 > 0:08:42You know what I mean?

0:08:44 > 0:08:47I mean, that's my bag in there, man, you know?

0:08:47 > 0:08:51- Leaving it, and that. - I'd like a bit more security than just a piece of canvas.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Know what I mean? I'm not saying there's anything in there, but...

0:08:54 > 0:08:56tramps and things.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00As the campfires roar across the Glastonbury site,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04DME settle in for their first night under the stars.

0:09:12 > 0:09:18It's Friday morning at Worthy Farm. The sun is shining and with people still arriving in their droves,

0:09:18 > 0:09:23the sold-out festival looks set to be a winner.

0:09:23 > 0:09:28And kicking off the 40th anniversary on the Pyramid Stage is Glastonbury veteran Rolf Harris.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30# Ooh, and it makes us wonder... #

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Master of ceremonies at the Introducing Stage

0:09:37 > 0:09:40is Radio 1's New Music DJ, Huw Stephens.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44'I think everybody makes music'

0:09:44 > 0:09:47that wants to be heard by more than just themselves,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50and BBC Introducing makes that happen,

0:09:50 > 0:09:53whether it be on the radio or on the stages here at the festivals.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56And to do it at the biggest and the best festival in the world

0:09:56 > 0:09:58is a big thing, I think.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02The Introducing Stage is opened by surprise special guests,

0:10:02 > 0:10:05and this year's hot ticket, Mumford And Sons.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07# Roll away your stone

0:10:07 > 0:10:09# I'll roll away mine

0:10:11 > 0:10:16# Together we can see what we will find

0:10:18 > 0:10:20# Don't leave me alone

0:10:20 > 0:10:22# At this time

0:10:24 > 0:10:30# For I'm afraid of what I will discover inside... #

0:10:32 > 0:10:37The Introducing Stage is just one part of Glastonbury's commitment to new music.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39It's always been about supporting new music.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42We're passionate about getting new bands on.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46Will you please give a huge Introducing welcome to Napoleon In Rags?

0:10:46 > 0:10:48CHEERING

0:10:51 > 0:10:55# Well, cold love came in on a Saturday night... #

0:10:55 > 0:10:58I think the best place to discover new music is at the festival,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01so it's like the ultimate marriage, in a way.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02# Don't let it out

0:11:02 > 0:11:03# Don't let it out... #

0:11:03 > 0:11:06'It's the best thing when people come through

0:11:06 > 0:11:09'from the smaller stages up to the headline slots.'

0:11:09 > 0:11:13It's really satisfying when you see that, and you can book a band as the headliner,

0:11:13 > 0:11:18knowing that they've come through from some of the much smaller stages supporting new music.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24The world's biggest party is now in full swing,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27as festival-goers embrace the great outdoors.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Now that they're all here, how are DME finding their festival experience?

0:11:31 > 0:11:37We thought it was going to be, like, just a bit bohemian, you know what I mean? Just a bit, like, basic.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41You get what I'm saying? We thought we were going to literally have to rough it,

0:11:41 > 0:11:47but the shower facilities and the toilets - it's not too bad, man. It's an experience, isn't it?

0:11:47 > 0:11:49You've got to take it as an experience.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52We've got, like, backstage passes as well.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54So we're just going to try and...

0:11:54 > 0:11:57You know what I mean? See what's popping off backstage.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00See what all that's about, you know what I mean?

0:12:00 > 0:12:02On a humble trip, though.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Because obviously we're bottom of the food chain,

0:12:05 > 0:12:08so we're not going to invade the place like normal Brum men do.

0:12:08 > 0:12:13# Maybe, sometimes

0:12:13 > 0:12:16# We feel afraid

0:12:16 > 0:12:20# But it's all right The more you stay... #

0:12:20 > 0:12:24With an hour to go before their Glastonbury debut, Da Mighty Elementz

0:12:24 > 0:12:26head backstage to rub shoulders with the stars,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28and pick up some last-minute tips.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31# Girl, put your records on

0:12:31 > 0:12:34# Tell me your favourite song

0:12:34 > 0:12:37# You go ahead, let your hair down

0:12:39 > 0:12:41# Sapphire and faded jeans

0:12:41 > 0:12:43# I hope you get your dreams

0:12:43 > 0:12:48# Just go ahead Let your hair down... #

0:12:48 > 0:12:53- Has it come to the point where, all your gigs, you don't get nervous?- No, I always get nervous.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58- I feel like you need it, you need that adrenalin.- Yeah, you definitely need that buzz.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01I find it hard to separate nerves from excitement, even in other things.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04"Am excited or am I nervous?" I can never tell.

0:13:04 > 0:13:05It's the same emotion for me.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Advice for us, how would you...

0:13:08 > 0:13:11say, like, how to deal with it? Because it's new for us.

0:13:11 > 0:13:12I guess you just sort of ride it.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16I feel like I try not to think too much about how important it is.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19You're trying to do your work and get something out of it for yourself.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22My favourite gigs are where you're in it,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24'and you get lost and forget what you were doing,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28- 'and you forget you're in front of an audience.- That's the best.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30'That's why I'm always looking for that moment.'

0:13:30 > 0:13:35- Half the time I've got my eyes closed...- I know!- I think, "There's all these people! I forgot."

0:13:35 > 0:13:39- I'll be looking out for that now. - She's got her eyes closed, and she told us that!

0:13:49 > 0:13:52On the Introducing Stage, Bristol band Out Like A Lion

0:13:52 > 0:13:55have drawn in the biggest crowd of the day so far.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57# Oh, oh, whoa

0:13:57 > 0:14:00# Oh, oh, whoa

0:14:00 > 0:14:02# You're telling me

0:14:02 > 0:14:05# Teacher's going to tell you a thing or two... #

0:14:05 > 0:14:10But backstage for a suited and booted DME, there's another problem.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13As per usual, something's gone a little bit wrong,

0:14:13 > 0:14:16so we're just waiting on the DJ now, who forgot his trousers.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19So, yeah, we're just ready to go now.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22It's just that we're waiting on a build-up.

0:14:22 > 0:14:23Just want to get out there.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Yeah, just want to get out there and just give it some.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Not a very good look, but it wouldn't be DME if everything went to plan. Really and truly.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34No dicky bow. I've got jeans on. Not a good show.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37This is the last time you'll see me before I go on stage.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Peace, everyone! Come on, let's go.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42The crowd's looking quite healthy. Better than we expected.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46The more of a crowd we've got, I think the more we'll give back to them,

0:14:46 > 0:14:48so hopefully the energy will come through.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51# When the pimp's in the crib, man

0:14:51 > 0:14:52- # Drop it like it's hot - What?

0:14:52 > 0:14:53- # Drop it like it's hot - What? #

0:14:53 > 0:14:57Wardrobe malfunctions may be the least of their worries.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51and we'll get a really nice tone for when we get on stage.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55This one I'm going to wear up on a harness so I can play it.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57It's a brand new one, actually.

0:27:27 > 0:27:32'For me, advice to other bands is really based on what I experienced,'

0:27:35 > 0:27:39"nobody likes me, everyone's going to think I'm rubbish."

0:27:39 > 0:27:43But, really, people have made an effort to come and see you,

0:27:43 > 0:27:45so they already think you're good,

0:27:45 > 0:27:49and it's just really important to connect with the audience

0:28:49 > 0:28:54And I'm not even into this music, but my hair stood on end,

0:28:57 > 0:29:00'After seeing Plan B, I'm more confident than ever.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03'I think it will be fantastic.'

0:29:03 > 0:29:07With an hour to go, Celt Islam get into the festival vibe,

0:29:07 > 0:29:10hanging out with the movers and shakers backstage.

0:29:10 > 0:29:15It's great to just the chill here and get away from the madness of what's out there, you know.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19It's great being out there, but you do need a break now and again.

0:29:19 > 0:29:22So it's nice to just chill back here and see a few interesting folk.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25I just saw Jo Whiley.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27Her arm brushed my arm.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31I was blessed by Jo Whiley. I just wanted to tell her,

0:29:31 > 0:29:35"You're responsible for my mother being completely obsessed with Coldplay."

0:29:35 > 0:29:39A huge supporter of Celt Islam's music is BBC Asian Network's

0:29:39 > 0:29:43Bobby Friction. Bobby has championed the band by giving them radio play

0:29:43 > 0:29:45on his show and nominating them for this gig.

0:29:45 > 0:29:49I've had bands before at the Introducing Stage.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52Great, they've totally filled what Introducing was all about.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55But with Mr Islam, with Abdullah,

0:29:55 > 0:29:59because there's that whole Sufi vibe going on and the Celtic vibe,

0:29:59 > 0:30:02I just think that's he's kind of come home, in a really weird way.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06So I am really excited. I'm not bothered if there's loads of people there

0:30:06 > 0:30:08or a couple of people there,

0:30:08 > 0:30:12cos you will have done what you were supposed to do, which is play at Glastonbury

0:30:12 > 0:30:16and bringing together the Celtic and Islamic and maybe even pagan worlds.

0:30:16 > 0:30:20# Why is your love so hard to get sometimes?

0:30:22 > 0:30:23# T-T-Tell me... #

0:30:23 > 0:30:27While Northampton five-piece NewIslands finish their set,

0:30:27 > 0:30:30Celt Islam prepare to take to the stage.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33However, the earlier bravado seems to have gone amiss.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36Have the nerves finally kicked in?

0:30:36 > 0:30:40Now, I just want to get the gig over and done with.

0:30:40 > 0:30:44I just need to focus now on performance.

0:30:44 > 0:30:50With very little time to set up, the band can't afford any hiccups.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53But, lo and behold, there seems to be a problem.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59- What's happened? - The computers went down.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01Had to go all the way back.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03See you in a minute.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise...

0:31:51 > 0:31:54The crowd are happy, but it doesn't look like Abdullah is.

0:31:57 > 0:32:02Singer Firouzeh joins the band on stage, adding a touch of glamour to the set.

0:32:04 > 0:32:05# Believe me

0:32:05 > 0:32:09# When you go, the times you feel alone

0:32:09 > 0:32:12# Waiting by the phone

0:32:13 > 0:32:16# If only

0:32:16 > 0:32:20# Circumstance allowed you by my side

0:32:20 > 0:32:23# My rollercoaster ride

0:32:25 > 0:32:28# Through the rain

0:32:28 > 0:32:30# The shining light up in the sky

0:32:30 > 0:32:34# Deep within everything I see... #

0:32:35 > 0:32:38After a few glitches and a slightly shorter set than planned,

0:32:38 > 0:32:41the gig is a huge success.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44Celt Islam go down a storm, doing Bobby Friction proud.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47HE SINGS IN HARMONY

0:33:11 > 0:33:14CHEERING

0:33:14 > 0:33:16Thanks, Glastonbury.

0:33:18 > 0:33:19'I enjoyed it.'

0:33:19 > 0:33:24This is the beauty of being a musician and a live artist at times, that things go wrong.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27- Yeah.- But, you know, laptop died.

0:33:27 > 0:33:28Luckily, I used my brains,

0:33:28 > 0:33:32I brought another laptop and got it up and running.

0:33:32 > 0:33:33I had a few monitor problems,

0:33:33 > 0:33:38so I couldn't play as much keyboards as I wanted to, but I just thought,

0:33:38 > 0:33:40"What the hell, have a good time,"

0:33:40 > 0:33:44and so, you know, I kind of did the best I could, really.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46For this opportunity to come along

0:33:46 > 0:33:51and to have the support from BBC Asian Network and Bobby Friction playing me,

0:33:51 > 0:33:54that's a great blessing and an honour and I'm glad that I came, you know.

0:33:57 > 0:34:02It's been a long day, but festivities aren't over yet.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12Sci-fi prog rockers Muse storm the Pyramid Stage,

0:34:12 > 0:34:15bringing Saturday to a super-massive finish.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27London-based singer-songwriter Lettie

0:34:27 > 0:34:31hopes playing the Introducing Stage on Sunday will be her big break.

0:34:36 > 0:34:43My name is Lettie and I create atmospheric, catchy tunes,

0:34:43 > 0:34:46mainly on guitar and keyboards.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52# I was wandering around this dark town

0:34:52 > 0:34:54# The ghost of yesterday still haunts me now... #

0:34:54 > 0:34:59I'm not a great player. I'm a kind of outsider artist when it comes to playing the instruments,

0:34:59 > 0:35:01even though I'm a trained pianist.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05So there's a sense of naivety as well, and I like that.

0:35:05 > 0:35:09I like simple and that approach which is almost childlike.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12# Don't you know

0:35:12 > 0:35:14# The key... #

0:35:14 > 0:35:17Lettie has already recorded two albums.

0:35:17 > 0:35:23But with funds lacking a little promotion, each one has gone unnoticed.

0:35:23 > 0:35:30Lettie has enlisted the help of producer Mike Mason to record her third album.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32He will also be performing with her at Glastonbury.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41I create music using a lot of loops,

0:35:41 > 0:35:46and I love the idea of trying to create as much sound as I can.

0:35:46 > 0:35:51Our idea is to create music that's slightly out of this world, rather than in it.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53# I've got all the things

0:35:53 > 0:35:56# You desire

0:35:56 > 0:36:01# In my pocket I've got dreams for sale... #

0:36:01 > 0:36:04I have been around a long time.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07Since 2007, I've done over 100 gigs.

0:36:07 > 0:36:13There is an element of chaos and danger to our set, which we like to keep in a way.

0:36:13 > 0:36:15It is totally not put on.

0:36:15 > 0:36:19Some people say, "You should tidy it up, you should get much more slick."

0:36:19 > 0:36:23# I'll sell you a ticket or sell you a cruise... #

0:36:23 > 0:36:26People are getting a bit bored of slick and,

0:36:26 > 0:36:29you know, I could be in front of a karaoke machine if it was that slick.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32The performances we do are always different,

0:36:32 > 0:36:36and that's why it's so exciting for us to play and for people to hear,

0:36:36 > 0:36:40cos it won't be the same the next time they see us, and that's what we're trying to do,

0:36:40 > 0:36:46create a show where people will come again, because I don't want to see a band again unless it's different.

0:36:51 > 0:36:54Although Lettie's music is relatively unknown,

0:36:54 > 0:36:59she has been spotted by Squeeze's Chris Difford, who is collaborating with her on her latest track.

0:36:59 > 0:37:03# It will change

0:37:03 > 0:37:08# It doesn't have to stay the same... #

0:37:08 > 0:37:14She came very kindly to support me at a gig in London and I was thrilled to hear her stuff.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16It's the kind of music I like to listen to.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18It's very sort of soothing,

0:37:18 > 0:37:22and I feel like I'm in a bath full of lovely music. It's great.

0:37:22 > 0:37:26# It will change

0:37:26 > 0:37:31# It doesn't have to stay the same... #

0:37:31 > 0:37:35I think Glastonbury is an opportunity for everybody who plays there.

0:37:35 > 0:37:40It's a wonderful environment to captivate people. I'm envious that she's playing there.

0:37:40 > 0:37:45I might have to sort of climb in the boot of her car and find my way in.

0:37:58 > 0:38:05It's a glorious Sunday morning, and it looks like the final day of Glastonbury is going to be a corker.

0:38:05 > 0:38:13With 11 promising acts left to grace the Introducing Stage, Lettie has no shortage of competition.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16It's up to her and producer Mike to give the crowd a show to remember.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18Hiya. I'm Abdullah, Celt Islam.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21Have one of my CDs.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23- Oh, great. - I was checking you out on the net.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25I haven't brought any. I would give you one.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27No, no, it's all right, love.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31I praise God that everything goes well for you.

0:38:31 > 0:38:33Really, I do.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36You know, that's all I can say, really, on that.

0:38:36 > 0:38:38But, yeah, the stage is good.

0:38:38 > 0:38:44- There's lovely people there and anything you need, they'll help you. - That's great.

0:38:44 > 0:38:49# This is the news Something terrible is happening

0:38:49 > 0:38:55# This is the news Something terrible is happening... #

0:38:55 > 0:39:00Setting the bar high for the last day on the Introducing Stage

0:39:00 > 0:39:02are Brighton quartet End Of Level Baddie.

0:39:02 > 0:39:06# It's tragedy followed by... #

0:39:06 > 0:39:10We've got a few hours till we play.

0:39:10 > 0:39:15I think we're loading in quite soon to at least get our stuff there.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17In regards to the performance, we've been talking a bit to Abdullah.

0:39:17 > 0:39:22He's been really great, giving us a few tips.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25The one thing I'm a little bit worried about is the monitoring,

0:39:25 > 0:39:27but I think, if I make a point of that, that's OK.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30We're not too bad about it, are we?

0:39:30 > 0:39:33I've taken some more calm pills, so...

0:39:47 > 0:39:51With a few hours to go before she's due to perform,

0:39:51 > 0:39:57Lettie heads backstage to make the most of her artist's pass and do some serious star spotting.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00We've just seen Doctor Who. I'm very, very excited.

0:40:00 > 0:40:05- Mike watches Doctor Who all the time. - No, I don't.- You do!

0:40:05 > 0:40:08You can't hear Mike at this point cos he's not miked up,

0:40:08 > 0:40:11but he does watch it all the time so he can't argue against me.

0:40:14 > 0:40:19At The Other Stage, thousands of fans wait to see Aussie band The Temper Trap perform.

0:40:19 > 0:40:24They've come a long way since they were spotted by Introducing two years ago.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27I'm a huge fan. Great to meet you.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30Hi. I'm Dougy. What's your name?

0:40:30 > 0:40:32- Lettie.- Cool.- Great to meet you.

0:40:32 > 0:40:37- Nice to meet you. Where are you from?- Have a good gig. London.

0:40:37 > 0:40:41She's also playing today, so she's going to check you out and hoping for the same success.

0:40:41 > 0:40:46- Cool. All the best. - Have we really good one.- Good luck. Thank you so much. See you.- Bye.

0:41:01 > 0:41:07Blagging her way side of stage, Lettie gets a taste of the big time with a band's-eye view of the crowd.

0:41:19 > 0:41:24Sunday's special guest on the Introducing Stage is another treat

0:41:24 > 0:41:26and one of this year's hottest artists.

0:41:26 > 0:41:30Fans crowd in to watch the performance, and Lettie gets back

0:41:30 > 0:41:33just in time to take a front row seat.

0:41:33 > 0:41:38Here at Glastonbury it is the very wonderful Laura Marling!

0:41:57 > 0:42:01# I might be a part of this Ripple on water from a lonesome drip

0:42:01 > 0:42:06# A fallen tree that witnessed me I'm alone, him and me

0:42:09 > 0:42:13# Life itself could not aspire To have someone be so admired

0:42:13 > 0:42:19# I threw creation to my king With a silence broken by a whispered wind... #

0:42:19 > 0:42:22I just saw Laura Marlin, who was just phenomenal.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25She has the most amazing, amazing voice.

0:42:25 > 0:42:32It's so pure and genuine and I said to her how wonderful it was, but, you know, she...

0:42:32 > 0:42:37Obviously it's quite hectic when you come off the stage, but I'm glad I saw her.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40Those two songs she sang are just beautiful.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44A real honour to see her perform.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46And how does that make you feel about your performance?

0:42:46 > 0:42:50It makes me feel incredibly nervous and I've only got 25 minutes to get ready,

0:42:50 > 0:42:54and I'm feeling that I need to get my skates together,

0:42:54 > 0:43:00cos I need to stay calm and that's my biggest thing - I just have to be calm.

0:43:00 > 0:43:05# I was prepared

0:43:05 > 0:43:08# To love you... #

0:43:11 > 0:43:14As London band Dry The River give a seamless performance,

0:43:14 > 0:43:19a very nervous Lettie has less than half a hour to compose herself.

0:43:21 > 0:43:26I'm feeling OK. I think seeing Laura Marling totally put fear into me.

0:43:26 > 0:43:32I think before I was a lot more confident, but I think we...

0:43:32 > 0:43:36I haven't even done my hair, but I think it's going to go fine, you know.

0:43:36 > 0:43:39I'm just going to give it my best shot.

0:43:39 > 0:43:41We've got a few things to set up.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43I've got to make sure my mic's near me.

0:43:43 > 0:43:48As long as I'm comfortable, I can do it, and the loop pedal works.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50I think it'll be fine.

0:43:50 > 0:43:54I'm excited to play. I can't wait to finish, though, I have to admit,

0:43:54 > 0:44:00so I can relax, but I'm looking forward. The adrenaline's rushing. I guess that's a good thing.

0:44:00 > 0:44:02This is the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury.

0:44:02 > 0:44:06And it's a pleasure to welcome this next band on the stage right now.

0:44:06 > 0:44:11I think you're in for a treat on a Sunday afternoon, the last day of Glastonbury.

0:44:11 > 0:44:13Please give a very warm welcome to Lettie!

0:44:19 > 0:44:22# Do you know

0:44:22 > 0:44:24# The key?

0:44:24 > 0:44:27# I've been looking

0:44:27 > 0:44:30# Everywhere

0:44:30 > 0:44:35# He'll show you the back door where they hide

0:44:35 > 0:44:40# With all the grease and all the dirt left behind

0:44:41 > 0:44:46# Mr Lighter, Mr Lighter than my soul... #

0:44:46 > 0:44:50Lettie's atmospheric sound is pulling in the Sunday crowd.

0:44:50 > 0:44:54But as the set progresses, the gremlins have returned.

0:44:54 > 0:44:57# ..the Yellow Brick Road

0:44:57 > 0:45:02# I'm trying to crack The Da Vinci Code

0:45:03 > 0:45:07# With wings on fire I came close to...#

0:45:07 > 0:45:10The computer and keyboards have gone down.

0:45:10 > 0:45:15As Mike frantically tries to find the source of the problem, it's up to Lettie to carry on alone.

0:45:16 > 0:45:20# Hang on, hang on in there

0:45:20 > 0:45:26# Nobody's going to find you Hang on, hang on in there... #

0:45:26 > 0:45:30After breaking a sweat and swapping various wires around, they're back up and running.

0:45:30 > 0:45:33Lettie gives it everything she's got for the last song.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35# Don't look down, don't look down

0:45:35 > 0:45:38# Take your eyes right off the ground

0:45:38 > 0:45:40# Hey

0:45:40 > 0:45:42# Hey

0:45:42 > 0:45:44# Look up now, look up now

0:45:44 > 0:45:47# Can't you see we're heading for the sundown

0:45:47 > 0:45:49# Hey

0:45:49 > 0:45:51# Hey

0:45:51 > 0:45:53# Don't look back, don't turn around

0:45:53 > 0:45:55# Take your eyes off the ground... #

0:46:02 > 0:46:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:46:05 > 0:46:08What was good was we pulled through it. I could look at the negatives,

0:46:08 > 0:46:12but I'm a bit of a trooper and things get forgotten very easily.

0:46:12 > 0:46:18And the truth is, sometimes when it's all really, really slick, there's a lot of things I am doing -

0:46:18 > 0:46:22there's a little bit of backing - but on the whole, it has that element of danger.

0:46:22 > 0:46:27And, you know, what happened today really was all technical.

0:46:27 > 0:46:33Mike's keyboard completely died on him, so it was one of those things that was totally out of our control.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36On the whole, the audience were really sweet,

0:46:36 > 0:46:43I didn't see many people walking away, and a few came in and that's the main thing, sustain the interest.

0:46:43 > 0:46:48The one thing I've always feared is being boring and I don't think as a performer I'm boring,

0:46:48 > 0:46:51and if I can achieve that, that's quite a thing for me.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53I never want to be boring.

0:47:02 > 0:47:05It's been another triumphant year for Introducing.

0:47:05 > 0:47:1032 undiscovered acts got the chance to play alongside some of the biggest bands in the world.

0:47:10 > 0:47:16Glastonbury-goers saw some special performances and discovered some amazing new artists.

0:47:16 > 0:47:20Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you so much.

0:47:20 > 0:47:22It's been a brilliant year.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25The quality's been really high. It's really exciting when a band

0:47:25 > 0:47:27plays the BBC Introducing Stage one year,

0:47:27 > 0:47:30then the following year they'll play a bigger stage.

0:47:30 > 0:47:33Sometimes the journey will end on the BBC Introducing Stage, I'll be honest.

0:47:33 > 0:47:38At a festival like Glastonbury, it might be the band's one chance at getting their music out there.

0:47:38 > 0:47:44But if things go an artist's way, they'll get a deal, they'll get a publishing deal,

0:47:44 > 0:47:49management, an agent, they'll go up a notch on the festival stages and get their music out there.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54# Happy birthday... #

0:47:54 > 0:48:00- Hey!- Glastonbury's 40th anniversary is brought to a close with a very special performance

0:48:00 > 0:48:05from Stevie Wonder and extra special guest Michael Eavis.

0:48:05 > 0:48:07# Happy birthday

0:48:07 > 0:48:11# Happy birthday... #

0:48:11 > 0:48:13Our three acts gave it all they had on the Introducing Stage,

0:48:13 > 0:48:17and each one, though not without hiccups, managed to pull it off.

0:48:17 > 0:48:21Each of their performances can be viewed online at...

0:48:24 > 0:48:26You know what the reality of it is.

0:48:26 > 0:48:33Monday morning's work, we've got to go to work, but, yes, the camping experience - it's been a bit mad.

0:48:33 > 0:48:37It's fantastic to now be able to say I've played Glastonbury.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40It's been amazing, the whole experience.

0:48:40 > 0:48:43This is something that I've dreamt of for years.

0:48:43 > 0:48:47For this opportunity to come along and to have the support from the BBC,

0:48:47 > 0:48:52that's a great blessing and an honour and I'm glad that I came.
