:15:17. > :15:20.What did you make of that? Everything you expected U2 to do.

:15:20. > :15:26.They played risky tunes as well. Absolutely. A couple of surprises.

:15:26. > :15:32.For the most part, they had to play hit-heavy. A band in great form.

:15:32. > :15:40.know. I love the fact they went back so early to the stuff which we

:15:40. > :15:46.are - reminded me when I first fell in love with U2. It sounds so good.

:15:46. > :15:50.It's great. It was a stripped raw set. They they had the vanity stage

:15:50. > :15:54.up front. There wasn't a huge amount going on outside of the

:15:54. > :15:59.music. Brave for them to do. Hopefully they will come back here

:15:59. > :16:04.and tell us why they made the decision. Fingers crossed we might

:36:07. > :36:07.That

:36:07. > :36:08.That looked

:36:08. > :36:13.That looked to

:36:13. > :36:20.That looked to me like a band going,, "job done" the look between

:36:20. > :36:26.Edge and Bono, it was, "told you it would be good" Bono was like, "it

:36:26. > :36:31.was all right"? Did you enjoy it? The bottom like line is U2 will be

:36:31. > :36:35.high on that for some time to come. They look really high. Hopefully,

:36:35. > :36:39.making their way back here. We might be able to ask them how it

:36:39. > :36:45.felt. All that talk. All those years of speculation, will U2 do.

:36:45. > :36:52.It they were on the list along with Presence and Bruce SpringSteen and

:36:52. > :36:57.a lot of other headline liners who never played. As soon as they were

:36:57. > :37:01.announced the artists have kept flying. Most people realise when he

:37:01. > :37:05.hurt his back last year chances were they were going to be

:37:05. > :37:09.headlining again this year. Now it's done, now that concert is over.

:37:09. > :37:16.What did you make of it? I loved the fact that a lot of the bands I

:37:16. > :37:21.have spoken to today were going,, "I actually quite like U2" I hear

:37:21. > :37:26.people saying "I'm in the going to watch it and see it". Marcus from

:37:27. > :37:32.Mumford & Sons was going,, "of course I'm going to be there.

:37:32. > :37:36.a funny world when we live in that the most successful ongoing rock

:37:36. > :37:41.band has become a guilty pleasure. Opinions are for everybody and

:37:41. > :37:44.everyone has a different one. I'm sure everyone is talking. I loved

:37:44. > :37:50.the Coldplay. The message, who will be watching right now, then they

:37:50. > :37:54.went and did the Yellow thing. Coldplay going, we are on tomorrow,

:37:54. > :37:59.check out what we do. It hasn't been about U2 today. Now that it's

:37:59. > :38:06.said and down done it's a weekend of amazing music across many

:38:06. > :38:10.different stages at Glastonbury. Over at the other stage we have

:38:10. > :38:20.Primal Scream. Here are two songs from earlier on on the evening,

:38:20. > :38:20.

:38:20. > :43:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:43:05. > :43:15.# I believe in you Let's hear you there. Let me hear

:43:15. > :43:15.

:43:15. > :46:25.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:46:25. > :46:35.# Just what is it # I said, I'm gonna get deep down

:46:35. > :46:35.

:46:35. > :51:01.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 45 seconds

:51:01. > :51:04.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Primal Scream have been

:51:05. > :51:10.reenergiseing their masterpiece album for almost a year. I'm not

:51:10. > :51:14.sure if that was their intention when they started doing shows.

:51:14. > :51:18.exciting. On the other stage delivering it right here on your

:51:18. > :51:22.Glastonbury coverage. It's remarkable to think that a band

:51:22. > :51:26.that never looked back, always looked forward, have spent quite

:51:26. > :51:30.some time rethinking that record and play it again. It doesn't

:51:30. > :51:35.surprise thasm record has never goten tired. It's one of the most

:51:35. > :51:39.forward thinking records. Tonight was a celebration of that record

:51:39. > :51:44.and band. Bobbie Gill less pi's shirt. It was fantastic. You are

:51:44. > :51:48.right to bring up clothing. A few people have been asking ple how

:51:48. > :51:53.come I look like I've come back from the artic and you look like

:51:53. > :52:00.you have been in the Maldives. What is going on? I don't know. I'm

:52:00. > :52:05.wearing your coat. You are 3, 2, 1 I'm here and loose. Back in the

:52:05. > :52:09.game. We go to Greg now. He has been doing this trawl around the

:52:09. > :52:13.site. It's a stage crawl. He is checking out everything that is

:52:13. > :52:18.going on in the stage that is is happening. And is bringing us a

:52:18. > :52:23.flavour. Some of the bits we don't get to, Greg is doing it for us.

:52:23. > :52:28.Let's go to him on his stage crawl. Where's my coat! This is my first

:52:28. > :52:35.time doing the TV for Glastonbury. I can show you the real Glastonbury.

:52:35. > :52:41.I mean, keep your U2's, you can keep your Coldplay's, this is the

:52:41. > :52:44.proper bit. I'm in the circus area. I will show you the theatre bit. I

:52:44. > :52:54.will show you gems you have heard about and not necessarily seen.

:52:54. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :53:05.Also, some weirdness. Let's go. I like the look of these guyss. Can

:53:05. > :53:23.

:53:23. > :53:33.you teach me some moves? The out Hey. What is this then? An after

:53:33. > :53:36.

:53:36. > :53:44.workshop. What do I do? Smile. Shake your body a bit. Ha-ha! This

:53:44. > :53:49.is a sonic forest. Can I stop you a sec. What happens in here? You run

:53:49. > :53:54.past the trees in in the forest. It make as sound. Shall we run

:53:54. > :54:00.together, hand in hand? What is the idea. The delay make it is dreamy.

:54:00. > :54:04.We play it until 4.00 am and we get wild. I'm trying to experience the

:54:04. > :54:10.festival as quickly as possible. These are clay figures people made

:54:10. > :54:15.over years. If you want to do the whole festival in a day we have it

:54:15. > :54:25.for you. Toilets, miniature Pyramid Stage. Who is headlining? The seven

:54:25. > :54:28.

:54:28. > :54:34.heads of Bono and the Edge. I love Measuring

:54:34. > :54:44.# The dark secret night # And I think to myself

:54:44. > :54:54.

:54:54. > :55:00.# What a wonderful world... # Excuse me, madam, how are you?

:55:00. > :55:07.are you? It's a beautiful machine? You get four weeks shopping in. We

:55:07. > :55:13.are Granny Terizmo. Try and get up this hill. Go on,

:55:13. > :55:16.have a go! I'm Betty. And we are the only

:55:16. > :55:21.formation shopping trolley dancing troupe in the country!

:55:21. > :55:27.You are similar to the Red Arrows? Very similar, just with more style

:55:27. > :55:32.and a bit more attitude, I think. You're not going to get blue smoke

:55:32. > :55:36.coming out your bum, are you? it depends what I've eaten the

:55:36. > :55:40.night before. Off you go!

:55:40. > :55:45.So part one of my Glastonbury crawl is done. I have had a great day so

:55:45. > :55:55.far. I made new friends as well. There is loads more to see. Find

:55:58. > :56:04.Greg James in action. Thank you to Greg. Look who we have now. We have

:56:04. > :56:14.the band who have just been on the Pyramid Stage.

:56:14. > :56:14.

:56:14. > :56:20.So was it as good... Hold on a sec. We have offerings here for you if

:56:20. > :56:30.you need a touch of whisky. Was it as good as Edge sold it to you last

:56:30. > :56:35.year. It was very, very, very, very taken aback by the warmth of the

:56:35. > :56:45.crowd to us and you know, we have not played to anything other than

:56:45. > :56:46.

:56:46. > :56:51.our own audience for 25 years. get out of here.

:56:51. > :56:54.Live Aid. No, no, no. I mean more than two

:56:54. > :56:59.songs. Oh right.

:56:59. > :57:06.When was the last festival? Someone must have tried to work it out?

:57:06. > :57:13.1985. It must have been a real real

:57:13. > :57:19.stinker if you haven't done one since. Thure rhythmics.

:57:19. > :57:26.Describe what it is like? Quite overpowering. I walked out and I

:57:26. > :57:30.didn't know it was like an ice-rink and I couldn't move. For a person

:57:30. > :57:36.like myself that likes to move about, it was interesting so I just

:57:36. > :57:41.thought just stand where you are and just sing and maybe the singing

:57:41. > :57:44.will be better for me not being able to move. If it rains in our

:57:44. > :57:48.production, we just get wet. So we were under the roof and it felt

:57:49. > :57:53.wrong because I had to go out. So you were there with the people?

:57:53. > :57:57.We were there with everyone. What did it look like? I am a man

:57:57. > :58:06.of the people. What did it look like? The flag

:58:07. > :58:11.thing, they did the flags just for us. You had all the flags. We felt

:58:11. > :58:15.very, very honoured that they would do the flags just for us.

:58:15. > :58:20.They were very nice. They were great.

:58:20. > :58:24.Did you get the tricolour and the Union Jack.

:58:24. > :58:30.Yes. As far as we can gather here

:58:30. > :58:33.everyone was gathered around the TVs and the millions of people were

:58:33. > :58:39.watching around the UK and the world, and it was beautifully

:58:40. > :58:45.directed. It looked wonderful. The songs were beautifully sung. The

:58:45. > :58:50.drums were probably the best thing. There were wonderful wide shots.

:58:50. > :58:56.You don't want to get too slick. I don't mind a bit of slickness.

:58:56. > :59:02.We were all over the shop, but in a good way.

:59:02. > :59:07.I'm going to point to Larry, every time. We have got to talk about the

:59:07. > :59:10.set. It doesn't get talked about as much. But it has been 30 years

:59:10. > :59:14.since Michael Eavis said he has been trying to get you to do this

:59:14. > :59:16.festival. He is rounding it up a few? They are an extraordinary

:59:16. > :59:23.family. Look what they put on for people

:59:24. > :59:28.every year. The philosophy behind it and their

:59:28. > :59:32.generosity, not just of spirit. There is the legacy and the

:59:32. > :59:35.heritage and the songs are what are going to carry you through tonight.

:59:36. > :59:39.There wasn't the claw. There wasn't the things that you put into the

:59:39. > :59:49.production, it was about the tunes. Five songs to open.

:59:49. > :59:52.

:59:52. > :00:00.Brave. It was very brave. I didn't call even better to start.

:00:00. > :00:05.thought it was promising. Choosing the tunes is a tough one.

:00:05. > :00:11.The hope the Damien Hirst piece went out.

:00:11. > :00:17.Tell us about that. He is the greatest living artist and he did a

:00:17. > :00:22.piece of work for Even Better Than The Real Thing and no one has seen

:00:22. > :00:30.this before. This is the opening moment? All the

:00:30. > :00:39.visuals were courtesy of Hirsty and to have his genius was a great

:00:39. > :00:44.thing and he kicked it off. We went into the fly. Dead flies courtesy

:00:44. > :00:46.of Hirsty! Can you hear the rain? This is

:00:46. > :00:50.Glastonbury, this is what it is like.

:00:50. > :00:56.We just had gentle rain. It was pouring with rain when I was was

:00:56. > :01:01.introduced you. What an introduction. I love you,

:01:01. > :01:04.Larry so much. You guys were in sync. It was

:01:04. > :01:13.remarkable. I was thinking about this with the rain and what that

:01:13. > :01:17.adds to the sense of occasion and it took me back to Under A Blood

:01:17. > :01:24.Red Sky. And you didn't climb on top of the

:01:24. > :01:31.stage this time. He couldn't move! There were a few more people here

:01:31. > :01:37.tonne than at Red Rocks. Did you enjoy it? So much.

:01:37. > :01:41.That song Jerusalem, for an Irish boy to sing it, but there is a

:01:41. > :01:47.story about Glastonbury. People don't know that song is sung in,

:01:47. > :01:51.Jerusalem, is about Joseph come to go Glastonbury and the oldest

:01:51. > :02:01.Christian abbey in Northern Europe is here. Everyone talks about

:02:01. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:12.Stonehenge and all that, man. It is a real pilgrimage for me. I used

:02:12. > :02:18.some of the lyrics in Bad also. Were you comfortable with that?

:02:18. > :02:22.Larry, how was it for you? I was a little disappointed it was so wet.

:02:22. > :02:29.A little bit of rain is OK. For the crowd, they were stuck together,

:02:29. > :02:33.but one criticism, the audience are so far away and sometimes when you

:02:33. > :02:40.are struggling through it, you just love to have them a little bit

:02:40. > :02:45.closer. There is a huge gap and I'm not used to that. You shouldn't

:02:45. > :02:49.have been a drummer. You should have been the front-man. You always

:08:25. > :08:28.What was interesting, you really stepped into the hole history of

:09:27. > :09:33.for the music. I came for all the other - myself and Mike Scot.

:09:33. > :09:37.Are you heading off to the to the healing fields now. The history of

:09:37. > :09:42.Glastonbury is well documented and Neil Oliver has done a film for it.

:09:42. > :09:52.You might want to watch this. tell you? No, you can't. You have

:09:52. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:00.For the past 40 years, festival goers have been building their own

:10:00. > :10:03.mythology in the Glastonbury site. But this part of the country has

:10:03. > :10:07.been a destination for pilgrims of all kinds for over 5,000 years. In

:10:07. > :10:12.a few days time thousands of festival goers will stream down the

:10:12. > :10:15.hillsides to watch U2 make history on that stage, but how many of them

:10:15. > :10:18.will appreciate how much truly ancient history surrounds them

:10:18. > :10:24.here? The first Pyramid Stage was

:10:24. > :10:27.constructed on this spot in 1971. Made out of scaffolding and plastic

:10:27. > :10:33.sheeting, its appearance was different to the great pyramids of

:10:33. > :10:38.Egypt, but the idea behind it was much the same. Andrew Kerr wanted

:10:38. > :10:42.to use the spiritual associations of the Somerset Levels to create a

:10:42. > :10:47.free festival that was more than a gig in a field. The Pyramid Stage

:10:47. > :10:54.was to be a spiritual satellite dish able to pick up and channel

:10:55. > :10:58.the vibrations of the cosmos. Whether or not Awe awe gree with

:10:58. > :11:03.Andre's approach to stage building, this landscape is littered with

:11:03. > :11:10.ancient sites and it is full of myth and legend.

:11:10. > :11:20.Andrew Kerr moved the festival from September to June conditioning the

:11:24. > :11:34.tradition of the he can of the equinox pilgrimage.

:11:34. > :11:34.

:11:34. > :11:43.The site is loafer looked by this outcrop. Glastonbury tor. The Celts

:11:56. > :12:00.Glastonburies, there is precious On a dry day, you can see the

:12:00. > :12:04.Glastonbury Festival site from here somewhere over there. Today, is not

:12:04. > :12:13.a dry day. In keeping with another Glastonbury Festival tradition, the

:12:13. > :12:19.weather has gone bad. In ancient times these Somerset levels were a

:12:19. > :12:24.shallow marshy sea. So maybe there is some truth in the legend of

:12:24. > :12:34.Avalon after all. Glastonbury's connection to Camelot

:12:34. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:45.Hello Neil. How are you doing? How long has

:12:45. > :12:55.this place been the focus of legend? This place has been legend

:12:55. > :12:59.for about 900 years. It goes back to the 12th century.

:12:59. > :13:04.What triggered legend here? One is the myth that when King Arthur was

:13:04. > :13:09.killed he was brought to the Isle of Avalon and no one knew where

:13:09. > :13:15.that was until the monks of Glastonbury started digging up the

:13:15. > :13:19.place. What they found here was the coffin of King Arthur.

:13:19. > :13:25.Do you think the legend, almost above all other legends, is the one

:13:25. > :13:29.that endures in this part of the world? Well, all nations want a

:13:29. > :13:39.great figurehead and if we look back into the Dark Ages, what we

:13:39. > :13:40.

:13:40. > :13:44.find in reality are petty chieftains. The other important

:13:44. > :13:49.thing about King Arthur is the notion he never dismt he was

:13:49. > :13:54.brought -- died. He was brought here to Avalon and perhaps he lives

:13:54. > :13:58.For many people, this landscape is charged with the energy of all

:13:58. > :14:04.those who have passed through it before them. From the ancient

:14:04. > :14:08.architects of Stonehenge, to those seeking Avalon, so perhaps it is

:14:08. > :14:18.fit that Glastonbury should inhabit this landscape now, drawing more

:14:18. > :14:22.

:14:22. > :14:29.people together and creating new I love that dude.

:14:29. > :14:39.Why do I think of Shameless when I see him? That was brilliant.

:14:40. > :14:46.We had to kick off U2. They are in good form, weren't

:14:46. > :14:49.they? They looked happy. We have interviewed a few bands and

:14:49. > :14:55.they always have that same look in their eyes, they can't comprehend

:14:55. > :15:03.what has happened? They watched the performance as they watched they

:15:03. > :15:07.are going, "Ah, no." You were going "that was good.". Except for Larry

:51:56. > :52:03.wanted to do something that was London-centric so we had New York

:52:03. > :52:08.and London on opposite sides of the field. On the build crew, there are

:52:08. > :52:11.something like 45 people. We have been helping build this

:52:11. > :52:16.marvellous structure which has been called London Underground.

:52:16. > :52:18.I painted all the balconies and all the bits on the ground and put the

:52:41. > :52:49.We all know what we have got to do so and we are all putting our time

:52:49. > :52:59.The idea behind the set was you know, I guess quite competitive,

:52:59. > :53:08.you know, we did the Downlow and it was an ambitious set and we wanted

:53:08. > :53:12.to push the boat out first. We previously crashed a taxi into

:53:12. > :53:18.the Downlow and the Tube has has derailed underground and smashed up

:53:18. > :53:21.through the tower block and caught daily life in its wheels and

:53:21. > :53:24.dragged it out through the front of the building as it crashed out

:53:46. > :53:51.Proper established clubs. They This is brilliant. The level of

:53:51. > :53:55.production is amazing. You don't often get to play inside a venue at

:54:39. > :54:44.I am always amazed at how much effort people put into putting

:54:52. > :54:54.We came down and launched the start of the Glastonbury season last

:55:57. > :56:04.Smiths. They thought it should be a hippies only festival. He embraced

:56:04. > :56:11.pop music and took Glastonbruy into a new league. I like Morrissey. At

:56:11. > :56:17.a festival he's like, "I don't know, will I enjoy myself today?" He came

:56:17. > :56:23.out. He went, "Hi, Glastonbury. How strange to see me here." OK, we're

:56:23. > :56:32.doing this then. So we thought you might enjoy a little bit of his set,
