:00:24. > :00:30.This programme contains some strong language and scenes of repetitive
:00:31. > :00:53.flashing images. Good evening and welcome to
:00:54. > :00:59.Glastonbury 2014, the Friday night. We've got hours of entertainment for
:01:00. > :01:05.you. We've got some acoustic performances. Some of the highlights
:01:06. > :01:13.of the Other Stages. Metronomy, but it is about the headliners tonight
:01:14. > :01:20.on the Pyramid Stage. The headliners at Glastonbury you could almost say
:01:21. > :01:26.they don't matter, because the festival sells out before they
:01:27. > :01:35.announce the headliners. Tonight's headliner was Arcade Fire. They are
:01:36. > :01:43.a band rather like Mumford Sons whose rise seems so to have been
:01:44. > :01:52.meteoric. When they come and play they bring such a spectacle. That's
:01:53. > :01:57.what you are going to enjoy in a minute. It is like a carnival. Just
:01:58. > :02:04.let it wash over you. Their rise seems to have been speedy. Here's
:02:05. > :02:08.the story of how Arcade Fire became a headlining act.
:02:09. > :02:15.From a Canadian suburb to the heady heights of stadiums around the world
:02:16. > :02:22.Arcade Fire have been whipping crowds into a frenzy for ten years.
:02:23. > :02:27.Are the front man formed the group after moving to Montreal. They burst
:02:28. > :02:33.on to the seen with their debut album Funeral in 2004. This indie
:02:34. > :02:41.record became a smash and soon they were sharing the stage with Bowie.
:02:42. > :02:48.We come from a pretty DIY more punk background, so we don't take any of
:02:49. > :02:56.it for granted. In 2007 their Glastonbury tale begins. Bathed in
:02:57. > :03:04.neon they had a storming set on the Other Stage. When we played
:03:05. > :03:08.Glastonbury last time we flew in to the airport and hailed a cab and
:03:09. > :03:19.said Glastonbury, please. He I remember playing Wake Up at
:03:20. > :03:26.Glastonbury. It has become anthemic for people, where if something
:03:27. > :03:34.happened this their lives, and you get that energy. Their third
:03:35. > :03:41.offering a began when he saw a picture of his old neighbourhood. It
:03:42. > :03:47.ended with a number 1. Fast forward a few years and shrounded in a Vale
:03:48. > :03:52.of successy and gigs billed as the reflectors and their latest album
:03:53. > :03:55.was revealed. Hailing back to their crowd-mingling beginnings they made
:03:56. > :03:58.grand entrances to gigs sporting their now infamous bobble heads.
:03:59. > :04:03.Wearing the giant masks is terrifying. You can only see out the
:04:04. > :04:08.nostrils and you can't hear anything. It's the opposite of
:04:09. > :04:14.therapeutic. But tonight it is all about one triangle-shaped structure
:04:15. > :04:23.and one of the hottest bands in the world now. One of the rules of our
:04:24. > :04:26.band is you can't perform in wellies and you can't be wearing a festival
:04:27. > :05:35.tag when you perform. # Entre les voyants,
:05:36. > :05:59.les vivants et les morts # It's just a Reflektor

:50:34. > :50:40.have guests joining us in the tree house as well. We certainly do. I

:05:06. > :05:40.M.I.A. Puts on a brilliant show. So compelling to watch. She headlined
:05:41. > :05:45.earlier tonight. We are live from Glastonbury. It is very nice to be
:05:46. > :05:49.here. It is a great way to spend an evening. I hope you're enjoying
:05:50. > :05:55.everything. We have lots more to come, Metronomy, and now one of the
:05:56. > :06:01.great things we we do these shows is we get to capture the excitement of
:06:02. > :06:09.a band when they've finished. We should have Lauren with Arcade Fire.
:06:10. > :06:15.I'm here in the Treehouse with Arcade Fire. That was an incredible
:06:16. > :06:20.performance. I feel tired. We went back to Medieval England, saw all of
:06:21. > :06:27.humanity at the same time. It was incredible. There were people
:06:28. > :06:31.lighting signal flares. It was Medieval, old school carnival,
:06:32. > :06:37.right? It really had that feel to it. You said on stage that you've
:06:38. > :06:40.done some amazing things in this band but that was probably the best
:06:41. > :06:44.experience. Was that just you in the moment or is this a huge deal for
:06:45. > :06:51.you? We've never been in front of a crowd like that. It rel felt for a
:06:52. > :06:56.band that has never had a had a proper hit single, to have that many
:06:57. > :07:02.people singing a song that they've given to your younger brother and
:07:03. > :07:05.hearing that many people sing Wake Up, a powerful experience. And how
:07:06. > :07:10.about the prep for this? The build-up to this has been a pretty
:07:11. > :07:14.huge thing. What's the anticipation of tonight been like for you? We've
:07:15. > :07:19.been playing a lot of shows that have been really fun. And we were
:07:20. > :07:25.like, let's play another show that's really fun. Let's play the biggest
:07:26. > :07:30.party. I read a great quote recently, she said the shows aren't
:07:31. > :07:33.a recital, they are a communal experience. How does it translate
:07:34. > :07:40.with a crowd of that size? It is a vast amount of people. How do you
:07:41. > :07:47.get everybody engaged? Signal flares really help. A couple of guys at the
:07:48. > :07:53.back had signal flares and it lit up the whole area. It really gave a
:07:54. > :07:57.sense of depth and scale. Is that a thing that people normally do at
:07:58. > :08:03.Glastonbury? It is, people advise against it on
:08:04. > :08:08.health and safety basis. Last time it happened was in Scotland and
:08:09. > :08:13.security stopped it. It was dangerous. Maybe they knew something
:08:14. > :08:17.we didn't. It does do something to you standing in front of that size
:08:18. > :08:22.of a crowd. It's a really special night. How did you put this set list
:08:23. > :08:27.together? How did you decide what you are going to play tonight? I
:08:28. > :08:33.know you've been doing region-specific covers Richard was
:08:34. > :08:38.up until 4.30am doing a best of Glastonbury sound clash at the end.
:08:39. > :08:44.That was brilliant. We kind of change it from night to night and we
:08:45. > :08:49.kind of instinctively went with what's been working. Reflektor tends
:08:50. > :08:52.to work at the front. Reflektor makes people dance and it sets the
:08:53. > :08:57.tone for everything. We thought, let's start with that. That's a good
:08:58. > :09:02.party song. This has been a great year for you guys and you've done
:09:03. > :09:06.some amazing things to promote the new album, Reflektor. But it is ten
:09:07. > :09:12.years since the debut album. Does it feel like a decade? It doesn't feel
:09:13. > :09:19.like a decade, but something happened over the last ten years,
:09:20. > :09:25.because that record was not like a hit record by any Metrix, and yet to
:09:26. > :09:30.see that many people know the songs that well, like older brothers have
:09:31. > :09:34.given it to their younger brothers. To me that's the greatest compliment
:09:35. > :09:38.in the world. Just people giving each other music, sharing it with
:09:39. > :09:43.your friends. That's what it is all about. That's how I felt about the
:09:44. > :09:47.Pixies or nirvana or anything that was important to me as a kid. That's
:09:48. > :09:53.your goal when you are in a band. It is fantastic to see you guys up
:09:54. > :09:57.there with all the toys at your disposal. Having the time of your
:09:58. > :10:02.lives. Where do you go from here? What's next? Dublin. We are playing
:10:03. > :10:09.a pretty big snow in Dublin in two days. We've never been a
:10:10. > :10:14.goal-orientated band. We never had a white board that said Glastonbury,
:10:15. > :10:19.number one album, play Saturday Night Live. Our goals have always
:10:20. > :10:24.been more musical, like, write a better song, do something with
:10:25. > :10:29.production that's different. It doesn't feel that different for us.
:10:30. > :10:33.It feels like we are in control of our own destiny. We are able to
:10:34. > :10:37.chose what projects we want to do. It feels like an exciting time.
:10:38. > :10:43.There's no like, what do we do that's bigger? We don't want to be
:10:44. > :10:51.bigger or smaller. It is not about topping it that way. We haven't
:10:52. > :10:58.changed. Congratulations again on such a wonderful headline show.
:10:59. > :11:07.Pleasure. Now can I take my make-up off? Yes, somebody give him a wipe.
:11:08. > :11:15.Lauren talking to Arcade Fire without their massive paper papier
:11:16. > :11:18.mache heads. I like his fake painted on glasses.
:11:19. > :11:22.So many people saying today how fantastic everybody looks. It looks
:11:23. > :11:25.like this is the festival that everyone makes such an effort for.
:11:26. > :11:29.Beautiful make-up and clothes that people are wearing. A lot of people
:11:30. > :11:34.are commenting on it. We are going now to the band who
:11:35. > :11:36.were headlines on the Park Stage and this is Metronomy from earlier on
:11:37. > :12:56.this evening. # Love letters
:12:57. > :13:02.# # Love letters all I see

:18:14. > :19:50.This town, this town looks more like a mad professor with
:19:51. > :19:53.his massive bouffant quiff. That was Metronomy and they were on
:19:54. > :19:59.the Park Stage earlier on. Star-spotting. We should do more of
:20:00. > :20:07.that. Who've you seen? Most impressive. Noel Gallagher. I'm
:20:08. > :20:15.going to trump that, Bradley Cooper, with Metallica. Gemma Cairney loves
:20:16. > :20:20.a party. She is in an area called Block 9 and we are going over to her
:20:21. > :20:26.live right now. Hi Gemma. Wow! What can I say? The place at Glastonbury
:20:27. > :20:31.where your wildest dreams and nightmares become reality, it is
:20:32. > :20:44.pretty grey out here. Block 9 in the midst of it all a post-apocalyptic
:20:45. > :20:54.bonanza. Earlier the One Show was here. They were here with Euan
:20:55. > :21:00.Thomas and this is what happened. With all due respect, at the moment,
:21:01. > :21:07.where are we? It is bits and peepses everywhere. What is it going to be?
:21:08. > :21:15.This will be the download. Over here is the New York traffic lights with
:21:16. > :21:21.a fully operational Walk, Don't Walk signs. And the dancers. Do you think
:21:22. > :21:26.this will be done for Wednesday? It is a giant jigsaw puzzle. But in
:21:27. > :21:33.your mind it is all finished? In my mind we are downtown New York 1989.
:21:34. > :21:37.And a 50-foot high set is under construction. Dedicated to music
:21:38. > :21:42.closer to home, it is called the London Underground. That's a serious
:21:43. > :21:48.amount of scaffolding. You can't tell now but this becomes a replica
:21:49. > :21:57.of an East London tower block. And the wow factor is our Crocked tube.
:21:58. > :22:03.This one only weighs one tonne and it is made out of plywood. And this
:22:04. > :22:08.goes up there? Up to the third floor, like it's been smashed
:22:09. > :22:17.through the building. I've been training recently. Shall we do it? A
:22:18. > :22:21.0-tonne crane lifts it on to the scaffolding. Hard hat on, highs
:22:22. > :22:32.advise, gloves, but Alex has loads more kit than me. Slowly by surely
:22:33. > :22:39.the carriage rises into position. That's a tonne of Tube train hanging
:22:40. > :22:52.right there. Not exactly in my hands but I feel responsible. It's up
:22:53. > :22:57.there. It looks good? Really happy. Went very smoothly. They are
:22:58. > :23:06.securing it now. I have got a bit of a sweat on. I think you at least owe
:23:07. > :23:10.me a cup of tea. A mammoth operation takes place, with car penters and
:23:11. > :23:16.artists. The end result is breathtaking.
:23:17. > :23:20.This is amazing. Last time I was here it was a field with
:23:21. > :23:25.scaffolding. Now look at it. It looks like New York. And as for
:23:26. > :23:32.London Underground, that's genius. Am I actually in Somerset in a
:23:33. > :23:41.lovely lady offered to show me around. Welcome to the NYC Download.
:23:42. > :23:46.Are you going to show me around? Yes. You've got to teach men how to
:23:47. > :24:06.vogue. OK. It's absolutely heaving in there.
:24:07. > :24:14.It's brilliant. I'm going to check out the London Underground. This is
:24:15. > :24:27.the weirdest thing. Have a look in here. I'm inside a fridge. That was
