:08:13. > :08:15.Jeff Lynne's wrote ELO that we're going to get to shortly but there

:08:16. > :08:20.are other legends on site, it is fair disabled. And in this space.

:11:29. > :11:38.# If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting

:11:39. > :12:11.APPLAUSE Cyndi Lauper, well done with the

:12:12. > :12:16.barrage of disco coming in! At least you know, it's not in the right key

:12:17. > :12:20.but whatever, I've got it. Your first time at Glastonbury? Yes, I'm

:12:21. > :12:25.really excited to be here. I've never been here. I really felt like

:12:26. > :12:31.I was missing out. I'm so glad, I just wish I had a glittery raincoat!

:12:32. > :12:35.I did not think to bring it! I'm trying to lip read because I can't

:12:36. > :12:43.see you now. But you are having a good time? A glittery raincoat! You

:12:44. > :12:53.could definitely get one. We will get you one. And some wings, I need

:12:54. > :12:56.wings. And some glittery teardrops. There is so much glitter on-site and

:12:57. > :13:01.so many wings but if that's what you want, job done, you are sorted.

:13:02. > :13:06.Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much, Cyndi Lauper. The time has

:13:07. > :13:09.come from one leading to another, let's get ready for ELO's

:13:10. > :13:13.performance but before we get there, we are going to catch up with a

:13:14. > :13:17.little bit of the story of how this, as Mark said, this unofficial

:13:18. > :13:20.headline spot came to be. I can't think of a better catalogue of songs

:13:21. > :13:25.to be beaten in this, as you will see, the hits keep on coming. We

:13:26. > :13:29.have had a big one from Cyndi Lauper already. And plenty more to come.

:13:30. > :13:39.This is the story of ELO's appearance at Glastonbury.

:13:40. > :13:46.Symphonic pop rockers the Electric light Orchestra are one of the most

:13:47. > :13:52.beloved British bands of all times. And that the baton of big haired

:13:53. > :13:57.Brummie, Jeff Lynne, they've used raucous riffs with footstomping

:13:58. > :14:01.strings and soundtrack the 70s. You've got your rock 'n' roll

:14:02. > :14:09.harmonies, classical bits, stick them all together and what have you

:14:10. > :14:13.got? ELO. ELO's first orchestral offering came in 1972.

:14:14. > :14:25.# Did you see your friend crying from his eyes today?

:14:26. > :14:35.Then they started his daddy 's stream of singles with Showdown.

:14:36. > :14:38.Breakthrough album A New World Record set them on the road to

:14:39. > :14:44.stardom. # It's living thing

:14:45. > :14:50.# It is a terrible thing to lose and follow-up Out Of The Blue proved the

:14:51. > :14:54.perfect blend of orchestral opulent and polished pop production.

:14:55. > :14:59.# Tell us why you had to hide away for so long

:15:00. > :15:07.# Where did we go wrong. # By the end of the 70s, ELO were the

:15:08. > :15:14.biggest band on the planet. Their record-breaking tour came complete

:15:15. > :15:18.with a giant flying saucer stage. And with a little help from Olivia

:15:19. > :15:23.Newton-John, they hit number one with Xanadu in 1980.

:15:24. > :15:28.# Xanadu. # But as 80s pop got clean cut and

:15:29. > :15:34.cosmopolitan, ELO fell out of favour and called it a day in 1986. Jeff

:15:35. > :15:39.Lynne turned producer on records for Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George

:15:40. > :15:44.Harrison. And together with Bob Dylan, they formed the most super of

:15:45. > :15:51.supergroups, The Travelling Wilburys.

:15:52. > :15:55.# Everybody's got somebody to lean on. #

:15:56. > :15:59.It was almost 30 years until Jeff dusted off the aviator sunglasses

:16:00. > :16:04.and re-formed ELO in 2014. # All over the world

:16:05. > :16:10.# Everybody get the word. # This resurrection brought ELO's

:16:11. > :16:17.galaxy of hits to a whole new generation. People are really going

:16:18. > :16:21.out of their way to be nice and say, "I love you and all your stuff".

:16:22. > :16:25.That was not happening ten years ago but it certainly is now. There is an

:16:26. > :16:33.old saying, if you hang around long enough, you will be all right in the

:16:34. > :16:38.end! And now, Jeff Lynne's ELO are ready to rock the Pyramid stage,

:16:39. > :16:41.though Don your hair helmets, set phasers to stun, and prepare for a

:16:42. > :16:55.Sunday afternoon set that promises to be out of this world.

:16:56. > :17:22.# You made a fool of me, but them broken dreams have got to end

:17:23. > :17:28.# Hey woman, you got the blues, cos you ain't got no one else to use

:17:29. > :17:33.# There's an open road that leads nowhere, so just make some miles

:17:34. > :17:41.# There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in

:17:42. > :17:55.# But you ain't got no one else to blame

:17:56. > :18:11.# Evil woman, evil woman, evil woman, evil woman

:18:12. > :18:18.# Hit some gold too hot to settle down

:18:19. > :18:23.# But a fool and his money soon go separate ways

:18:24. > :18:28.# And you found a fool lyin' in a daze

:18:29. > :18:34.# You destroyed all the virtues that the Lord gave you

:18:35. > :18:38.# It's so good that you're feeling pain

:18:39. > :18:45.# But you better get yourself on board the very next train

:18:46. > :19:53.# Evil woman, evil woman evil woman, evil woman

:19:54. > :20:00.# But now you're tryin' to wail a different song

:20:01. > :20:06.# You made the wine, now you drink the cup

:20:07. > :20:10.# I came runnin' every time you cried

:20:11. > :20:15.# Thought I saw love smilin' in your eyes

:20:16. > :20:29.# Ha ha very nice to know, that you ain't got no place left to go

:20:30. > :21:04.# Evil woman, evil woman, evil woman, evil woman #.

:21:05. > :21:22.Thank you! Hello, Glastonbury. That's great. It's great to be here,

:21:23. > :21:23.we have never been here before. Here is our next song. It's called

:21:24. > :21:36.Showdown. # Looks like we're

:21:37. > :22:01.ridin' on the same train # Looks as through

:22:02. > :22:19.there'll be more pain # And it's rainin'

:22:20. > :22:47.# Now my heart is turned to stone again

:22:48. > :23:14.# And it's rainin' all over the world

:23:15. > :24:17.# And it's rainin' all over the world

:24:18. > :24:39.# And it's rainin' all over the world

:24:40. > :26:18.# There's gonna be a party all over the world

:26:19. > :26:24.# But where it came from, I don't really know

:26:25. > :26:33.# And I heard these voices calling all over the world

:26:34. > :26:53.# Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight

:30:21. > :30:34.# When I was a boy, I learned to play,

:30:35. > :30:40.# Far into the night and drift away

:30:41. > :30:43.# Don't want to work on the milk or the bread,

:23:57. > :24:23.So here we are, joining the man who has just been playing the lead and

:24:24. > :24:29.slot at Glastonbury Festival, minutes fresh off the stage, Mr Jeff

:24:30. > :24:32.Lynne, how are you? Not too bad. I was a bit scared before we went on

:24:33. > :24:37.because we had never done a festival before, in the thousand years we

:24:38. > :24:45.have been going. Except smaller ones. But this one was amazing to

:24:46. > :24:50.look and see that many people. Everybody tells me it went down

:24:51. > :24:57.well. So this was your festival debut? Of this size, yeah. I did

:24:58. > :25:04.Hyde Park. That was the other one. But this one is so big. Why did you

:25:05. > :25:10.do it? He made me do it. Your manager? My manager, yeah. He was

:25:11. > :25:14.going to beat me up if I didn't do it. He must have persuaded you asked

:25:15. > :25:19.why Glastonbury was important. Yes, he said it was in a really good time

:25:20. > :25:24.slot. So we might as well do it, because we had all rehearsed and

:25:25. > :25:29.been doing the tour. This is the 19th show on this tour. So it was a

:25:30. > :25:32.good reason to do it, otherwise it would have meant us practising for a

:25:33. > :25:40.month just to get it up to this level. So did you research it, have

:25:41. > :25:44.you watched Glastonbury in the past? I have seen bits of it on the telly,

:25:45. > :25:53.of course. I saw some of it last night. It makes me kind oh, shoot!

:25:54. > :25:59.That is big, isn't it? At it came out fine in the end. It was fine

:26:00. > :26:03.once I got up there. Quite incredible that someone like you,

:26:04. > :26:08.who have had a long career, would still get nervous. I always get

:26:09. > :26:13.nervous at that sort of thing. Like I say, I haven't had enough

:26:14. > :26:18.experience at those. Most people just treat it like a regular gig,

:26:19. > :26:22.but it's difficult to do that when you have only done one before. So

:26:23. > :26:25.the likes of Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie have played this slot in the

:26:26. > :26:31.past. Their reaction afterwards has been, wow, they have been blown

:26:32. > :26:36.away. Do you share that feeling? Yeah, I was knocked out with the

:26:37. > :26:42.crowd. There were so many waving and clapping and singing along. I love

:26:43. > :26:45.that. As a songwriter, that's what you love, when everybody is singing

:26:46. > :26:52.your song louder than you are singing it. And when you looked out,

:26:53. > :26:56.was there anything that stands out? At one point, I saw a dingy floating

:26:57. > :27:04.by. I saw lots of peculiar things, but I can't play them on the TV or

:27:05. > :27:06.the radio. There were certainly some characters in the front few rows,

:27:07. > :27:12.wearing this amazing stuff and nodding at me and doing little

:27:13. > :27:18.puppets at me. Pretty much only at Glastonbury. Yes! And how would you

:27:19. > :27:21.sum up your Glastonbury experience, being here with ELO? It was

:27:22. > :27:28.fantastic. I had never set foot in the place before, so it was all a

:27:29. > :27:34.shock to me. But I really enjoyed it, and the crowd were fabulous.

:27:35. > :27:39.Thank you for a much. Wellies on an sticking around for the rest of the

:27:40. > :27:45.festival? We are, unfortunately. I was going to take you to the circus

:27:46. > :27:51.field. They will not let me stay. Jeff, thank you very much.

:27:52. > :27:55.What a nice guy, and what an unarguable song catalogue, but what

:27:56. > :28:00.is it about the Midlands rockers that they are so down-to-earth? All

:28:01. > :28:03.the sabbath guys and noddy and Robert Plant, and of course, the

:28:04. > :28:09.great Roy would. Can we have Roy would next year in the legend slots?

:28:10. > :28:17.With all those great tunes? Let's have Roy. We will start making the

:28:18. > :28:22.list. This is your last show. My last link. Thank you for having me.

:28:23. > :28:27.I am still very excited to see what happens tonight on The Other Stage.

:28:28. > :28:33.Excellent line-up. I know Coldplay are the pyramid headliners, but we

:28:34. > :28:38.have LCD Sound system and back on The Other Stage. Looking forward to

:28:39. > :28:43.deck. Also on BBC Four after this, you can see Gregory Porter and Ellie

:28:44. > :28:48.Goulding, and then we are back at nine tonight here. Not you, but us.

:28:49. > :28:53.Thanks very much for having me, and don't forget, you can have a look at

:28:54. > :28:58.the live streaming on our website. We are back here later with

:28:59. > :29:00.Coldplay, on the Pyramid stage. Hopefully, the rain will keep off

:29:01. > :29:01.and
