:00:27. > :00:31.Hello! We are kicking off the festival season for BBC Three this
:00:31. > :00:39.summer. Along with Radio 1 we are bringing you something bigger and
:00:39. > :00:46.better than ever. It is Radio 1's Hackney Weekend. We are live from
:00:46. > :00:50.East London. Now our line-up is impressive. We have UK-based and
:00:50. > :00:57.international artists performing all day. Tonight you are going to
:00:57. > :01:02.see the whole of the headlineer set from Jay-Z. There is a lot of build
:01:02. > :01:08.up, the main stage behind us where Nicki Minaj will be. Of course,
:01:08. > :01:13.Jay-Z will be there later on. also have The Vaccines and Kasabian
:01:13. > :01:19.hitting the stage soon there. Look at the site it is huge. If you move
:01:19. > :01:27.along you can see the 1 Extra tent where will.i.am is performing and
:01:27. > :01:33.next to that, the Dance Tent where Calvin Harris is raving. It is an
:01:33. > :01:38.impressive sight, but we can't lie, the coats are on. It is an amazing
:01:38. > :01:45.sight behind us. Also, in amongst it all, somewhere, Gemma should be
:01:45. > :01:49.there. Where are you? I am here in the heart of Hackney 2012, it is
:01:49. > :01:55.amazing. So far I have caught up with the band, spoken with the
:01:55. > :02:00.lovely Emeli, but my fingers are tightly crossed to meet the Barbie
:02:00. > :02:07.herself, Nicki Minaj. I can't wait for Jay-Z's set, I have heard of
:02:07. > :02:12.something that could blow your mind, perhaps guests, who knows? Lovely,
:02:12. > :02:17.Gemma. Gemma is back stage getting all the gossip. Finding out who is
:02:17. > :02:23.hanging around and talking to who. We will catch up with her. And we
:02:23. > :02:28.would love for you to get in touch with us on the BBC Three Twitter
:02:28. > :02:33.page on: If you have questions for Ed Sheeran he will be in later. Let
:02:33. > :02:38.us know what your questions o. we should explain why in Hackney?
:02:38. > :02:44.OK, well, we are in Hackney for the Hackney Weekend. It is in East
:02:44. > :02:50.London. I have put together a package why we love Hackney so much.
:02:50. > :02:59.Personally? No, not personally, but it is good. Where is Hackney?
:02:59. > :03:06.North-east London. The heart of London, basically. You get to
:03:06. > :03:12.Hackney by the 38 bus coming from Piccadilly, or the 254 from
:03:12. > :03:16.Stamford Hill. Straight to Stratford and change. Or get in a
:03:16. > :03:22.cab and tell them to take you to Hackney. They will take you.
:03:22. > :03:28.best way to get to Hackney is in a Hackney Carriage. A little bit of
:03:28. > :03:33.history, Shakespeare's first plays were played in Shoreditch. The GP
:03:33. > :03:38.Powder plot was plotted in Hoxton. Hackney comes from the Dutch word,
:03:39. > :03:43.horse, it drew the carriages, that is where the Hackney carriages come
:03:43. > :03:53.from. There are so many parks in Hackney. Many celebrities have come
:03:53. > :03:54.
:03:54. > :03:59.out of the area. Danny Defoe... MarcBolan. And I grew up in Hackney.
:03:59. > :04:04.Throughout history it has been known for being a bit edgy. East
:04:04. > :04:10.London for me is very hard-working, very working-class. It is not the
:04:10. > :04:16.most glamorous part of the world to live in. Definitely not. It is a
:04:16. > :04:22.melting pot of all different people. Creed, colour. The key for me being
:04:22. > :04:28.about brought up in Hackney, I saw the world on my street. Cypriots,
:04:28. > :04:33.Greek, for instance, Chinese, just everything on my road. Hackney is
:04:33. > :04:38.at the epicentre of multiculturalism. One of the best
:04:38. > :04:45.things about Hackney is the pie and the marsh shop. You get any food
:04:45. > :04:51.you want and the best food. market was the first to introduce
:04:51. > :04:59.the west Indian food. There are so many foods here, Caribbean, Turkish,
:04:59. > :05:04.Indian. Hackney is up there with the food. There is definitely lingo.
:05:04. > :05:10.You do from East London first, then it travels elsewhere. What is
:05:10. > :05:18.happening? What is up? What is good? How are you doing? Leave it!
:05:18. > :05:25.Apples and pears, stairs. Bees and honey, money. It is very much on
:05:26. > :05:32.the edge of fashion and music. It has a natural vibe. There is a lot
:05:32. > :05:36.of artistic value in the area. A lot of what I talk about in Hackney
:05:36. > :05:40.are my experiences. Many people think that the heart of music is in
:05:40. > :05:47.East London. I'm sure people say the same about their area, but we
:05:48. > :05:52.knew. We had the swagger. To sum up Hackney in one word... Talent.
:05:52. > :05:59.Beautiful. Home. That is what I think of when I think of it. It is
:05:59. > :06:05.a wonderful, great place to be. Not being biased. Hackney forever,
:06:05. > :06:09.ain't it?! And that is why we love Hackney so much. There were some
:06:09. > :06:16.beautiful shots, I don't know if you saw them, helicopter shots of
:06:16. > :06:21.the whole site, look a that. That is insane. That is Tim West Wood on
:06:21. > :06:25.a helicopter. I thought so. And we are so close to the Olympic scythe.
:06:25. > :06:29.There is a whole air of excitement in Hackney. And one thing I did not
:06:29. > :06:33.count on, there is a lot of wildlife. Tell everyone what
:06:34. > :06:38.happened today? On the route today, I was excited to spot a heron in
:06:38. > :06:45.one of the local streams, which I was excited about. Everyone talks
:06:45. > :06:49.about the obvious things in Hackney, herons do not get a look in. I tell
:06:49. > :06:54.you what, let's watch something that is very, very exciting. A
:06:54. > :06:58.young lady who is Hackney born and bred, who has been working with the
:06:58. > :07:08.Hackney Academy and getting excited about the weekend. It is the
:07:08. > :07:41.
:07:41. > :07:47.# Crash into me at full speed # I'll pick you up when you're down
:07:47. > :07:54.# I'm in tune with how you feel Everything about this is real
:07:54. > :08:04.# When you're in unfamiliar places Count on me through life's changes
:08:04. > :08:14.# You're all I want, yeah yeah I know you're the one, yeah
:08:14. > :08:19.
:08:19. > :08:29.# Crash into me at full speed Crash into me
:08:29. > :08:32.
:08:32. > :08:42.# We can collide, we can collide
:08:42. > :09:02.
:09:02. > :09:08.# Know that you're never alone In me you can find a home
:09:08. > :09:18.# When you're in unfamiliar places Count on me through life's changes
:09:18. > :09:19.
:09:19. > :09:28.# You're all I want, yeah Yeah
:09:28. > :09:36.# You're all I want, yeah You are the one
:09:36. > :09:46.# You're all I want, yeah You are the one
:09:46. > :09:47.
:09:47. > :09:57.# Crash into me at full speed
:09:57. > :10:04.
:10:04. > :10:12.# We can collide, we can collide
:10:12. > :10:22.# We can collide, we can collide
:10:22. > :10:26.
:10:27. > :10:28.CHEERING
:10:28. > :10:28.CHEERING AND
:10:28. > :10:31.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:10:31. > :10:37.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Lovely. Leona Lewis opening up the main
:10:37. > :10:43.stage. You can see in the shot behind the Hackney Marshes, is the
:10:43. > :10:48.Olympic site. We are a mere stone's throw away, Greg. You have joined
:10:49. > :10:55.us in the tree house, we are here with the lovely Labrinth. Hello,
:10:55. > :11:02.Labrinth! How are you doing guys? I'm sitting here like, this trying
:11:02. > :11:08.to pretend I'm not cold. I have a hot water bottle if you are cold.
:11:08. > :11:12.will sound like a woos. Now, you were delivered to us today by a
:11:12. > :11:17.helicopter from the Isle of Wight festival? I was. We had a crazy
:11:17. > :11:22.show. I did not expect that welcome from the Isles of white, but it was
:11:22. > :11:29.madness. Now, it is muddy there, but it is muddy here and you have
:11:29. > :11:35.worn white trainers! I'm sorry, why do I do this? I keep putting, when
:11:35. > :11:44.I make this mistake, I put up a picture and say, "Guys, I did it
:11:44. > :11:52.again." I'm sorry. Bad idea! I must apologise, we named you Leona Lewis.
:11:52. > :11:59.But you do look similar! obviously a Hackney boy? Yes, I am.
:11:59. > :12:03.It must be amazing to have this in your back garden? Well, I was
:12:03. > :12:07.coming in the helicopter, but Hackney has never been on the map
:12:07. > :12:12.like this. Since growing up, it has always been understated things
:12:12. > :12:20.happening in the area. The most we got was a cheap fun fair, not even
:12:20. > :12:26.with the rides. Did you visit the Marshes as a kid? I did I, but to
:12:26. > :12:30.see this is amazing. You said you are grown up now. You are an am
:12:31. > :12:37.bass -- for Hackney. What do you have to do for that? Well, of
:12:37. > :12:43.course, I have never been an embassador for anything, so to be
:12:43. > :12:49.an ambassador for Hackney it feels like wow, look how far I have come.
:12:49. > :12:54.As an artist, also as a person. To have this kind of an honour. So,
:12:54. > :13:01.yeah, I'm loving it, man. I'm happy. It is rewarding to give back to the
:13:01. > :13:06.area that you grew up, to the kids who live here now? Yes, ertime. Not
:13:06. > :13:09.too long ago we did a documentary with Plan B and Leona Lewis. We did
:13:09. > :13:14.a support programme with the young kids. They are performing here
:13:14. > :13:23.tomorrow as well. I can't wait for that. We will hear more about that.
:13:23. > :13:29.We will, and we will hear more about you, Labrinth. We have a
:13:29. > :13:34.question too, Chloe says: Would you let a fan collaborate with you?
:13:34. > :13:39.course! You would? I would love to. Without a doubt. What if they were
:13:39. > :13:44.bad? I would find a way of making it good. Labrinth, thank you very
:13:44. > :13:54.much. We look forward to you performing later for us. So, we
:13:54. > :14:00.
:14:00. > :14:05.have live music from earlier on. # Will you recognise me
:14:05. > :14:15.# Will you recognise me when I'm lying on my back?
:14:15. > :14:31.
:14:31. > :14:41.# Will you recognise me when I'm lying on my back?
:14:41. > :14:52.
:14:52. > :14:54.# Will you recognise me when I'm lying on my back?

:15:13. > :15:16.# Then I'm gone
:15:16. > :15:21.# Oh heaven, oh heaven I wake with good intentions
:15:21. > :15:28.# But the day it always lasts too long
:15:28. > :15:36.# Then I'm gone, then I'm gone Then I'm gone, then I'm gone
:15:36. > :15:44.# Then I'm gone, then I'm gone Then I'm gone, then I'm gone
:15:44. > :15:51.# Will you recognise me when I'm stealing from the poor?
:15:51. > :15:59.# You're not gonna like me I'm nothing like before

:18:43. > :18:53.the love. If you want to sing in # That's when you feel

:54:31. > :54:36.thing as I have no songs to force the floor orpbl small bumps.
:54:36. > :54:41.But the thing is that main stage is a huge stage and really tall. Did
:54:41. > :54:45.you get a sense of how many people are there? You must get to the
:54:45. > :54:49.point where you can't see the people in the back? It is a
:54:49. > :54:53.daunting thing to do, but it is an experience, but being one man with
:54:53. > :54:57.a guitar, I have not done many shows like this. So I'm still
:54:57. > :55:02.getting used to it. Do you prefer the intimate shows to

:55:06. > :55:11.intimate shows, but this is the first open-air main festival I have
:55:11. > :55:16.done. This is properly huge. Ask me next year.

:55:30. > :55:35.you can do. Getting angry, that is not going to help. I am a level guy.
:55:35. > :55:40.When it is lost it is well, that is bad. Then I was tweeting about it
:55:40. > :55:45.and they turned up. So it was OK. Being in Hackney, we have artists
:55:45. > :55:50.from the area performing. Leona Lewis, Labrinth and Plan B. What do
:55:50. > :55:53.you think it is with the area that has spawned so much talent? I think
:55:53. > :55:59.there is talent in lots of different areas. I could not tell
:55:59. > :56:03.you. There are so many areas around England that have so much talent.
:56:03. > :56:07.Today is high lighting Hackney talent, so that is good.
:56:07. > :56:11.Also, the Queen loves you? Officially, but I don't think she
:56:11. > :56:14.watched the set. Apparently she loved it.
:56:14. > :56:21.I have been told by the Queen herself.
:56:21. > :56:27.Tell Liz, thank you! Well, Ed, it has been lovely talking to you.
:56:27. > :56:32.Thank you for stopping by, your set was wonderful earlier.
