0:01:14 > 0:01:17that special viewers, which you'll see, have picked.
0:01:17 > 0:01:21I'd like to start off with one of my favourite moments from this early show
0:01:21 > 0:01:23with the wonderful Johnny Cash.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:01:34 > 0:01:36# I hear the train a comin'
0:01:37 > 0:01:39# It's rollin' 'round the bend,
0:01:39 > 0:01:43# And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when
0:01:43 > 0:01:49# I'm stuck in Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on
0:01:52 > 0:01:58# But that train keeps on rollin' on down to San Antone.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04# When I was just a baby, my mama told me,
0:02:04 > 0:02:09# "Son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns."
0:02:09 > 0:02:15# But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die
0:02:18 > 0:02:24# When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry... #
0:02:24 > 0:02:26Woah!
0:02:51 > 0:02:54# I bet there's rich folks eatin'
0:02:54 > 0:02:56# In a fancy dining car
0:02:56 > 0:03:00# They're probably drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars
0:03:00 > 0:03:03# Well I know I had it comin'
0:03:03 > 0:03:06# I know I can't be free
0:03:10 > 0:03:12# But those people keep on movin'
0:03:12 > 0:03:16# And that's what tortures me
0:03:43 > 0:03:45# Well, if they freed me from this prison
0:03:45 > 0:03:47If that railroad train was mine
0:03:47 > 0:03:52# I bet I'd move it on a little further down the line
0:03:52 > 0:03:55# Far from Folsom Prison
0:03:55 > 0:03:58# That's where I want to stay
0:04:01 > 0:04:08# And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away. #
0:04:16 > 0:04:20APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:04:22 > 0:04:24On any one show, you'll get
0:04:24 > 0:04:28maybe Tom Jones and you'll get some weird punk band with their pants on
0:04:28 > 0:04:33and you'll get someone who's a Tamla Motown heroine like,
0:04:33 > 0:04:35Martha Reeves or Mary Wells, or someone like that.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39It's just such a fantastic combination.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Plus you'll get very populist performers, like
0:04:42 > 0:04:46Robbie Williams and then you'll get some act from Croatia
0:04:46 > 0:04:49that plays the suitcase, that you've never heard of before.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53I think one performance that really sticks in my head
0:04:53 > 0:04:57was Paolo Nutini, because...
0:04:57 > 0:05:00it was his first single,
0:05:00 > 0:05:02and he just seemed so young.
0:05:02 > 0:05:08And he just kind of created this magnetism around himself
0:05:08 > 0:05:10and it was weird, because he looked like a boy.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13And yet, this amazing voice came out of him.
0:05:13 > 0:05:15# ..Beside me
0:05:15 > 0:05:19# Oh... And I found
0:05:19 > 0:05:26# That I'm bound to wander down that one-way road... #
0:05:26 > 0:05:31On that same show...Gogol Bordello as well
0:05:31 > 0:05:33who I thought were a bit frightening...
0:05:33 > 0:05:38to be honest. I thought I wouldn't want to get stuck in a room with them,
0:05:38 > 0:05:42especially not a small room cos they looked out of control.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46I'm sure they're not, I'm sure they're terribly nice and polite.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49I remember seeing Radiohead as well.
0:05:49 > 0:05:55And I've always thought Thom Yorke was such a fascinating, dark character
0:05:55 > 0:05:58with quite a complicated mind.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01I wanted to get him in a room with a pad and paper,
0:06:01 > 0:06:04and ask him about his brain and how it worked.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26# Please could you stop the noise
0:06:26 > 0:06:31# I'm trying to get some rest
0:06:39 > 0:06:51# From all the unborn chicken voices in my head
0:06:51 > 0:07:01# What's there?
0:07:01 > 0:07:09# What's there?
0:07:11 > 0:07:14# When I am king
0:07:14 > 0:07:20# You will be first against the wall
0:07:29 > 0:07:40# With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
0:07:41 > 0:07:50# What's there?
0:07:50 > 0:07:59# What's there? #
0:08:11 > 0:08:14HE SCATS
0:08:21 > 0:08:24# Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
0:08:27 > 0:08:31# Kicking, squealing, gucci little piggy
0:08:31 > 0:08:34# Yeah, yeah, yeah
0:08:43 > 0:08:45# You don't remember
0:08:45 > 0:08:46# You don't remember
0:08:46 > 0:08:49# Why don't you remember my name?
0:08:49 > 0:08:52# Off with his head, man Off with his head, man
0:08:52 > 0:08:59# Why don't you remember my name? I guess he does
0:09:37 > 0:09:41# Oh-oh-oh
0:09:41 > 0:09:45# Oh-oh-oh

0:10:20 > 0:10:32# From a great height... height...
0:10:32 > 0:10:37# Rain down, rain down
0:10:37 > 0:10:47# Come on rain down on me

0:12:26 > 0:12:31I was quite nervous, to be fair. I just got on with it.
0:12:31 > 0:12:37But it was just different being in that studio with all the people surrounding you.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:15:34 > 0:15:37I always think of Later as a sort of dating agency
0:15:37 > 0:15:41for the musically desperate. It's where, as it were, meet new people.
0:15:41 > 0:15:45And... there's been a sequence of...all the way through
0:15:45 > 0:15:48just girls you see for the first time...Amy Winehouse.
0:15:48 > 0:15:51I remember a fantastic girl called Priscilla Ahn...
0:15:51 > 0:15:54And...Corinne Bailey Rae.
0:15:54 > 0:15:59Recently, last year, there was a girl called Melody Gardot who I didn't know.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02I'm completely obsessed by this bit of footage.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05There are about 9,000 hits on YouTube
0:16:05 > 0:16:08and I think I'm 8,000 of them. I send them to all of my friends in America.
0:16:08 > 0:16:14If you want to feel that sort of frisson and magic of what music can be like,
0:16:14 > 0:16:17and what girls can be like,
0:16:17 > 0:16:20all the sort of Trans-Atlantic
0:16:20 > 0:16:24sexiness and gorgeousness of a smoky room,
0:16:24 > 0:16:27then watch this extraordinary three-minute clip.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30And it's Later in its perfection.
0:16:30 > 0:16:35# How was I to know
0:16:35 > 0:16:45# That this was always only just a little game to you?
0:16:46 > 0:16:50# All the time I felt you gave your heart
0:16:50 > 0:16:57# I thought that I would do the same for you
0:16:57 > 0:17:09# Tell the truth I think I should have seen it coming from a mile away
0:17:09 > 0:17:14# When the words you say are,
0:17:14 > 0:17:30# "Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love"
0:17:30 > 0:17:33# If I gave a thought to fascination
0:17:33 > 0:17:38# I would know it wasn't right to care
0:17:38 > 0:17:45# Logic doesn't seem to mind that I am fascinated by a love affair
0:17:45 > 0:17:46# Oh-oh
0:17:46 > 0:17:54# Still my heart would benefit from a little tenderness from time to time
0:17:54 > 0:17:56# But never mind,
0:17:56 > 0:18:03# Cos, Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love
0:18:06 > 0:18:14# Oh-oh-oh-oh
0:18:14 > 0:18:21# Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh... #
0:18:21 > 0:18:24SHE SCATS
0:18:38 > 0:18:42# Baby, I should hold on just a moment
0:18:42 > 0:18:46# And be sure it's not for vanity
0:18:46 > 0:18:54# Oh, look me in the eye and tell me love is never based upon insanity
0:18:56 > 0:19:05# Hear the way my heart is beating Hurry up, the moment's fleeting
0:19:05 > 0:19:16# Oh-oh... Kiss me now Don't ask me how
0:19:16 > 0:19:26# Cos, Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall
0:19:26 > 0:19:30Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall
0:19:30 > 0:19:33# And I would never tell
0:19:33 > 0:19:53# If you became a fool and fell in lo-ove... #
0:20:02 > 0:20:04APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:20:04 > 0:20:09I was actually intimidated and scared the first time, cos we had to lead the riff, I think.
0:20:09 > 0:20:11You know when they start with a riff
0:20:11 > 0:20:14and James started doing Back In Black.
0:20:16 > 0:20:21I don't know. I felt... All of a sudden I felt, "I'm not a musician, I don't deserve to be here."
0:20:21 > 0:20:23I did feel quite intimidated...
0:20:23 > 0:20:29to the point that it kind of make you angry, really.
0:20:29 > 0:20:33But sometimes that can make for a better performance.
0:20:37 > 0:20:41The last time we were on when we did Peeled Apples off Journal For Plague Lovers,
0:20:41 > 0:20:46that felt really rewarding
0:20:46 > 0:20:49cos we'd never been on the show with Richey in the band.
0:20:49 > 0:20:51We'd always wanted to, but it never happened,
0:20:51 > 0:20:54so the fact we were playing his lyrics on Later...
0:20:54 > 0:20:58We did Jackie Collins and Peeled Apples ..that felt really...
0:20:58 > 0:21:03Like some kind of vindication really cos his words were, you know, as important
0:21:03 > 0:21:04if not more than the music.
0:21:04 > 0:21:07# ..Riderless horses
0:21:07 > 0:21:10# On Chomsky's Camelot... #
0:21:10 > 0:21:15It is one of those music shows that certain things just inspire you, really.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18The Libertines, really, was the big bolt from the blue.
0:21:18 > 0:21:23I fell in love with them just from the first picture, really, from the tunics,
0:21:23 > 0:21:29but James was doing Ocean Spray on there with a trumpet player, Know Your Enemy was coming out,
0:21:29 > 0:21:34and he called me up to say, "Yeah, they're the boys," you know.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38You could just feel something, some raggedness, some romance,
0:21:38 > 0:21:42some nihilism, some vanity, and that really came through on the TV as well.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09# You're walking like you never seen the light
0:22:09 > 0:22:13# You're walking like it every night
0:22:13 > 0:22:16# But I've never seen you dance and I've never heard you sing
0:22:16 > 0:22:21- # So how can it mean- a single thing
0:22:24 > 0:22:25# It's all so rudimentary
0:22:34 > 0:22:38# You're talking like you're handy in a fight
0:22:38 > 0:22:41# You talk about it every night
0:22:41 > 0:22:45# But I've never seen those flowers in the barrel of your gun
0:22:45 > 0:22:50- # All I've ever- seen you do is run

0:25:18 > 0:25:20CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:25:21 > 0:25:27The secret ingredient is probably the fact that it doesn't pander to any trends,
0:25:27 > 0:25:30it kind of transcends trends. It's nothing to do with fashion,
0:25:30 > 0:25:32so nobody's on their guard, thinking,
0:25:32 > 0:25:36"Oh, God, if I don't get this right, my career's finished."
0:25:36 > 0:25:40It really is about the music and really is about celebrating the artist.
0:25:40 > 0:25:44That must be a great feeling, to be a musician,
0:25:44 > 0:25:48and suddenly not have to think about what people think about you.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51Cos there, you're not judged on anything apart from...
0:25:51 > 0:25:54"You're good anyway, that's why you're here."
0:25:54 > 0:25:58I'm a black music fan, so Billy Preston, before he died,
0:25:58 > 0:26:03doing That's The Way God Planned It, I remember singing along and swaying along to that.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06I would have got me lighter out, but I don't smoke.
0:26:06 > 0:26:12# Why can't we be humble like the good Lord said?
0:26:12 > 0:26:17# He promised to exalt us But low is the way
0:26:18 > 0:26:21# How can men be so greedy
0:26:21 > 0:26:25# When there's so much left?
0:26:25 > 0:26:27# All things are God-given
0:26:27 > 0:26:29# And they all have been blessed
0:26:29 > 0:26:33# That's the way God planned it
0:26:33 > 0:26:36# That's the way God wants it to be
0:26:43 > 0:26:46# That's the way God planned it
0:26:46 > 0:26:49# That's the way God wants it to be
0:26:56 > 0:26:59# Let not your heart be troubled
0:26:59 > 0:27:02# Let mourning, sobbing cease
0:27:03 > 0:27:05# Just learn how to help one another
0:27:05 > 0:27:08# And live in perfect peace
0:27:08 > 0:27:10# If we all could be humble
0:27:12 > 0:27:14# Like the good Lord said
0:27:14 > 0:27:18# He said he would exalt us all
0:27:18 > 0:27:19# But low is the way
0:27:19 > 0:27:23# That's the way God planned it
0:27:23 > 0:27:27# That's the way God wants it to be
0:27:27 > 0:27:28# Yeah
0:27:32 > 0:27:36# That's the way God planned it

0:28:29 > 0:28:31Yeah!
0:28:32 > 0:28:34# I hope you get the message

0:28:57 > 0:29:00# That's the way God planned it
0:29:00 > 0:29:04# That's the way God want it to be
0:29:04 > 0:29:06# Come on, come on
0:29:10 > 0:29:13# That's the way God planned it

0:29:17 > 0:29:20# Yeah, all right. #
0:29:23 > 0:29:25Yeah!
0:29:25 > 0:29:28CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:29:31 > 0:29:33One of the times that I remember SO clearly
0:29:33 > 0:29:36was when, I think, Datsuns were playing, also Coldplay were there,
0:29:36 > 0:29:39and Foo Fighters. It was like rock wars that night,
0:29:39 > 0:29:41everyone was trying to be really loud,
0:29:41 > 0:29:45with the exception of Coldplay, obviously, they don't do rock wars.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47They do it in their own special way.
0:29:47 > 0:29:49I remember standing really close to Foo Fighters
0:29:49 > 0:29:53when they were playing, and the volume wasn't turned up to 11,
0:29:53 > 0:29:57it was to 12, it was that loud, just being blown away by the volume.
0:29:57 > 0:30:00And it was just such an occasion, it was really exciting,
0:30:00 > 0:30:02and you can see how the bands play off each other
0:30:02 > 0:30:06and how it really, really matters to them, how they come across.
0:30:06 > 0:30:08I think that's one of my favourite moments.

0:34:43 > 0:34:48literally had 24 hours to get down from the north, down to London,

0:40:21 > 0:40:23Here's one from a recent show
0:40:23 > 0:40:26that features the wonderful Smokey Robinson
0:40:26 > 0:40:30and also a sensational guitar solo from Eric Clapton.
0:40:34 > 0:40:41# I waited till I saw the sun
0:40:41 > 0:40:48# Don't know why I didn't come
0:40:48 > 0:40:53# I left you by the house of fun
0:40:53 > 0:40:59# Don't know why I didn't come
0:40:59 > 0:41:04# I don't know why I didn't come
0:41:05 > 0:41:10# When I saw the break of day
0:41:12 > 0:41:16# I wished that I could fly away
0:41:16 > 0:41:23# Instead of kneeling in the sand
0:41:23 > 0:41:29# Catching teardrops in my hand
0:41:29 > 0:41:37# My heart is drenched in wine
0:41:40 > 0:41:52# You'll be on my mind forever
0:41:52 > 0:41:58# I would cross the angry sea
0:41:58 > 0:42:04# Die in ecstasy
0:42:04 > 0:42:10# But I'll be a bag of bones
0:42:10 > 0:42:15# Driving down the road alone
0:42:18 > 0:42:21# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
0:42:25 > 0:42:28# Play, Eric, play, Eric
0:42:30 > 0:42:32# Ooh, ooh

0:43:13 > 0:43:20# Don't know why I didn't come
0:43:20 > 0:43:26# I feel as empty as a drum
0:43:26 > 0:43:32# Don't know why I didn't come
0:43:32 > 0:43:37# I don't know why I didn't come
0:43:37 > 0:43:43# I don't know why I didn't come
0:43:43 > 0:43:58# I don't know why I didn't come. #
0:43:58 > 0:44:01CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:44:01 > 0:44:05I didn't even know what Jools Holland was, cos I didn't live here
0:44:05 > 0:44:10and also, I don't watch TV. so the whole thing was like...
0:44:10 > 0:44:14kinda surreal for me, and I didn't know none of the bands.
0:44:14 > 0:44:17And you know how they all have the stage?
0:44:17 > 0:44:22I said, "Where am I gonna be?" "Oh, they're just gonna shove you out in the middle of the floor."
0:44:22 > 0:44:26So...I thought it was gonna be a disaster, you know?
0:44:26 > 0:44:31And, er...but everyone was so nice to me there,
0:44:31 > 0:44:35and I just figured, "Oh, well, I'll play," cos I just play an old, beat-up guitar.
0:44:35 > 0:44:39So I thought, you know, if it's the end of my career,
0:44:39 > 0:44:42that don't matter cos I haven't started it yet.
0:44:42 > 0:44:45But I've watched it on the TV, you know?
0:44:45 > 0:44:49And I've caught it a couple of times where it was just so, like...
0:44:49 > 0:44:53One time, I think I turned it on and I got Elbow on there.
0:44:53 > 0:44:58And I really liked them, it was just majestic to see them on there.
0:45:16 > 0:45:19# Drinking in the morning sun
0:45:22 > 0:45:25# Blinking in the morning sun
0:45:27 > 0:45:31# Shaking off a heavy one
0:45:33 > 0:45:37# Yeah, heavy like a loaded gun
0:45:39 > 0:45:43# What made me behave that way?
0:45:45 > 0:45:48# Using words I never say
0:45:50 > 0:45:54# I can only think it must be love
0:45:56 > 0:46:00# Oh, anyway
0:46:00 > 0:46:06# It's looking like a beautiful day
0:46:09 > 0:46:12# Someone tell me how I feel
0:46:14 > 0:46:18# It's silly wrong, but vivid right
0:46:20 > 0:46:24# Oh, kiss me like a final meal
0:46:26 > 0:46:31# Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight
0:46:31 > 0:46:35# Cos holy cow, I love your eyes
0:46:38 > 0:46:41# And only now I see the light
0:46:43 > 0:46:48# Yeah, lying with you half awake
0:46:48 > 0:46:53# Well, anyway
0:46:53 > 0:47:00# It's looking like a beautiful day
0:47:07 > 0:47:10# When my face is chamois creased
0:47:13 > 0:47:16# If you think I wink, I did
0:47:19 > 0:47:22# Laugh politely at repeats
0:47:24 > 0:47:28# Oh, kiss me when my lips are thin
0:47:31 > 0:47:34# Cos holy cow, I love your eyes
0:47:36 > 0:47:40# And only now I see the light
0:47:42 > 0:47:46# Yeah, lying with me half awake
0:47:46 > 0:47:48# Stumbling over what to say
0:47:48 > 0:47:51# Well, anyway
0:47:51 > 0:47:57# It's looking like a beautiful day
0:48:05 > 0:48:11# So throw those curtains wide
0:48:11 > 0:48:17# One day like this a year would see me right
0:48:18 > 0:48:22# Throw those curtains wide
0:48:22 > 0:48:28# One day like this a year would see me right
0:48:29 > 0:48:35# Throw those curtains wide
0:48:35 > 0:48:39# One day like this a year would see me right
0:48:41 > 0:48:46# Throw those curtains wide
0:48:46 > 0:48:52# One day like this a year would see me right
0:48:53 > 0:48:56# Holy cow, I love your eyes
0:48:58 > 0:49:02# And only now I see the light
0:49:04 > 0:49:07# Holy cow, I love your eyes
0:49:10 > 0:49:15# And only now I see the light
0:49:16 > 0:49:21# Throw those curtains wide
0:49:21 > 0:49:26# One day like this a year would see me right
0:49:28 > 0:49:33# Throw those curtains wide
0:49:33 > 0:49:40# One day like this a year would see me right
0:49:40 > 0:49:45# Throw those curtains wide
0:49:45 > 0:49:52# One day like this a year would see me right. #
0:49:54 > 0:49:57CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:50:07 > 0:50:10The one performance that really sticks out for me...
0:50:10 > 0:50:12Well, one of them, cos there were loads.
0:50:12 > 0:50:14I'm going to stick to my sort of genre though.
0:50:14 > 0:50:17Which is obviously soul, R&B and hip-hop.
0:50:17 > 0:50:20It was Mary J Blige, No More Drama.
0:50:20 > 0:50:23For the casual viewer, they wouldn't really know the history of Mary J.
0:50:23 > 0:50:29She's somebody who has absolutely... all her material comes from her life,
0:50:29 > 0:50:34and a fan of Mary J would know that she's always been unhappy,
0:50:34 > 0:50:40miserable... You know! Pained. She brought the blues back into R&B,
0:50:40 > 0:50:44in a sense, in a way that no other female artist was doing at the time
0:50:44 > 0:50:48in the early '90s. Then there came a pivotal moment in her career,
0:50:48 > 0:50:52where she changed. The drugs had gone, the bad relationships,
0:50:52 > 0:50:55And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote the song for her, No More Drama.
0:50:55 > 0:50:59And it's quite worthy, you know, when I first heard it, I thought,
0:50:59 > 0:51:02"OK." I heard it on record, I thought I understood the record,
0:51:02 > 0:51:05but it means nothing on record compared to the performance.
0:51:05 > 0:51:08This woman, whenever she performs this song,
0:51:08 > 0:51:11you just watch a person feeling the music.
0:51:11 > 0:51:14Mary J took it to church on Later.
0:51:14 > 0:51:17The only thing she didn't do was break down in tears,
0:51:17 > 0:51:19she normally breaks down in tears when she does it.
0:51:19 > 0:51:23It was one of the...not pitch perfect, but most emotive performances
0:51:23 > 0:51:25I've ever seen on Jools Holland.
0:51:25 > 0:51:29And you can see the crowd are in awe at the end,
0:51:29 > 0:51:33because very rarely does an artist truly give it up
0:51:33 > 0:51:36the way she did with No More Drama. It was magnificent.
0:51:36 > 0:51:39# Whoa, whoa, whoa
0:51:41 > 0:51:44# Ooh-ooh-ooh
0:51:46 > 0:51:50# Oh yeah, no more
0:51:56 > 0:51:57# Ooh
0:52:01 > 0:52:03# Ooh-ooh-ooh
0:52:06 > 0:52:11# Oh yeah, no more
0:52:14 > 0:52:16# Broken heart again
0:52:16 > 0:52:19# Another lesson learned
0:52:19 > 0:52:21# Better know your friends
0:52:21 > 0:52:24# Or else you will get burned
0:52:24 > 0:52:26# Gotta count on me
0:52:26 > 0:52:31# Cos I can guarantee that I'll be fine
0:52:31 > 0:52:36- # (No more pain)- No more pain
0:52:36 > 0:52:42- # (No more pain)- No more pain
0:52:42 > 0:52:46- # (No drama)- No more drama in my life- (No more in my life)
0:52:46 > 0:52:50# No one's gonna make me hurt again
0:52:52 > 0:52:55# Why'd I play the fool
0:52:55 > 0:52:58# Go through ups and downs
0:52:58 > 0:53:00# Knowing all the time
0:53:00 > 0:53:03# You wouldn't be around
0:53:03 > 0:53:05# But maybe I liked the stress
0:53:05 > 0:53:08# Cos I was young and restless
0:53:08 > 0:53:10# But that was long ago
0:53:10 > 0:53:12# I don't wanna cry no more
0:53:12 > 0:53:16- # (No more pain)- No more pain, no more pain, no
0:53:16 > 0:53:21- # (No more games)- No more games, messin' with my mind
0:53:21 > 0:53:25- # (No drama)- No more drama in my life- (No more in my life)
0:53:25 > 0:53:30# No one's gonna make me hurt again, no more
0:53:30 > 0:53:36- # (No more tears)- No more tears, I'm tired of crying every night
0:53:36 > 0:53:41- # (No more fears)- No more fears, I really don't wanna fight
0:53:41 > 0:53:44- # (No drama)- No more drama in my life- (No more in my life)
0:53:44 > 0:53:48# I don't ever wanna hurt again
0:53:48 > 0:53:51# Wanna speak my mind
0:53:53 > 0:53:56# Oh it feels so good
0:53:56 > 0:53:58# When you let go
0:53:58 > 0:54:01# Of all the drama in your life
0:54:01 > 0:54:03# Now you're free from all the pain
0:54:03 > 0:54:06# Free from all the games
0:54:06 > 0:54:08# Free from all the stress
0:54:08 > 0:54:11# To find your happiness
0:54:11 > 0:54:13# I don't know
0:54:13 > 0:54:18# Only God knows where the story ends for me
0:54:18 > 0:54:21# But I know where the story begins
0:54:21 > 0:54:24# It's up to us to choose
0:54:24 > 0:54:26# Whether we win or lose
0:54:26 > 0:54:29# And I choose to win
0:54:29 > 0:54:34- # (No more pain)- No more pain, no more pain, tired of hurting
0:54:34 > 0:54:39- # (No more games)- Tired of you playin' games with my mind
0:54:39 > 0:54:45- # (No drama)- No more drama in my life- (No more in my life)
0:54:45 > 0:54:47# No more, no more, no more
0:54:47 > 0:54:49# No more, no more, no more
0:54:49 > 0:54:53- # (No more tears)- No more tears, no more crying every night
0:54:53 > 0:54:57- # (No more fears)- No more waking me up in the morning
0:54:57 > 0:54:59# With your disturbing phone calls
0:54:59 > 0:55:05- # (No drama)- Leave me alone, go ahead- (No more in my life)
0:55:05 > 0:55:08# Yeah, yeah
0:55:08 > 0:55:15- # (No more pain)- No more, I'm tired - (No more game)

0:55:49 > 0:55:54- # (No more drama)- No more drama
0:55:54 > 0:55:57- # (No more drama)- No more, no more
0:55:57 > 0:56:03- # (No more drama)- No more, no more
0:56:03 > 0:56:07# No more, no more, no more
0:56:07 > 0:56:11# I need peace of mind, peace of mind
0:56:11 > 0:56:15# And I need, oh, at night to sleep
0:56:15 > 0:56:18# I need to know that we are free
0:56:18 > 0:56:22# Oh, no, oh, no, oh

0:56:37 > 0:56:40# See, I know that we all been scorned
0:56:40 > 0:56:45# But we gonna try to heal together, people
0:56:45 > 0:56:50# Come together, we need to, yeah, yeah, yeah. #
0:56:53 > 0:56:56CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:56:58 > 0:57:00Thank you.
0:57:00 > 0:57:03I don't know, how many different things have I done on there?
0:57:03 > 0:57:05I've done...started off with Blur.
0:57:05 > 0:57:07# All your life you're dreaming... #
0:57:07 > 0:57:12And then I played with Afel and Mali Music.
0:57:16 > 0:57:19And then with Kano.
0:57:19 > 0:57:21# Now sing along!
0:57:21 > 0:57:23# La la la la la
0:57:23 > 0:57:26# La la la la la
0:57:26 > 0:57:29And then with the Monkey Orchestra.
0:57:31 > 0:57:35Er... I don't know if I actually...
0:57:35 > 0:57:39I did play one song, but I spent quite a lot of the time
0:57:39 > 0:57:42sitting at the back with a giant panda.
0:57:45 > 0:57:47The Good, the Bad and the Queen as well.
0:57:50 > 0:57:53And most recently with Gorillaz. So that's quite a few things.
0:57:53 > 0:57:56And just a last question, Damon, thank you so much.
0:57:56 > 0:58:01Thank you very much for letting me play all those times.
0:58:15 > 0:58:18# Love, electricity, shock wave central
0:58:18 > 0:58:20# Power on the motherboard, yes
0:58:20 > 0:58:23# Push up the overload, legendary heavy glow

1:00:10 > 1:00:13# Night after night
1:00:15 > 1:00:18# Just to get through the week
1:00:18 > 1:00:20# Sometimes it's hard now
1:00:22 > 1:00:25- # Right now- (Right now)
1:00:25 > 1:00:30- # Mmm- (Right now)
1:00:30 > 1:00:35# Sing yourselves out of depression
1:00:35 > 1:00:37# Rise above
1:00:38 > 1:00:42# I'll be searching if I know your heart
1:00:42 > 1:00:46# Electric is the love
1:00:46 > 1:00:48# Whoo-oo-ooh
1:00:48 > 1:00:52# There's only one way
1:00:52 > 1:00:55# Let it pray a little while longer
1:00:55 > 1:00:58# (Overload, overload, overload)

1:01:01 > 1:01:03# In another world
1:01:03 > 1:01:06# In another world, in the universe
1:01:06 > 1:01:10# Aaaaoooww!

1:02:23 > 1:02:26# Work it out right now! #
1:02:26 > 1:02:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
1:02:31 > 1:02:36What makes the show work is putting together the very different groups,
1:02:36 > 1:02:42so you might have a solo woman country and western singer
1:02:42 > 1:02:46from Nashville, along with a rock'n'roll band
1:02:46 > 1:02:48or a young British band,
1:02:48 > 1:02:51and it's the combinations, I think, that work.
1:02:51 > 1:02:56And there's always the fact that you've usually got, like,
1:02:56 > 1:03:00six bands around the kind of edge of a circle,
1:03:00 > 1:03:03and they're watching the other bands, so you've got this
1:03:03 > 1:03:06kind of mutual respect going on all the time,
1:03:06 > 1:03:10so it's fascinating to see one musician applauding another musician.
1:03:10 > 1:03:14So I think that's what really makes it work, I think it's the only show
1:03:14 > 1:03:17that puts together different kinds of music,
1:03:17 > 1:03:22and that's because of Jools' general interest in music, I think.
1:03:22 > 1:03:25He has such a broad range of interests.
1:03:25 > 1:03:29And the interviews, and when he plays piano
1:03:29 > 1:03:33and someone sings a song just with him,
1:03:33 > 1:03:36and then they talk, that's always fascinating.
1:03:36 > 1:03:39- Rehab.- Yeah.- When did you write that one?- Um, I wrote that...
1:03:39 > 1:03:44in February or March, in New York, with Mark Ronson.
1:03:44 > 1:03:46And we were just walking down the street,
1:03:46 > 1:03:49and I sang the hook, and he burst out laughing. He said, "Who's that?"
1:03:49 > 1:03:53I said, "I just made it up!" And he was like, "That would be really cool."
1:03:53 > 1:03:57So I said, "Let's go to the studio now, we can knock it out in an hour."
1:03:57 > 1:04:01- You went straight there and did it, just like that?- Yeah, literally. - Your voice has become
1:04:01 > 1:04:06- more powerful, your songwriting has become stronger, do you feel that happening?- Definitely.
1:04:06 > 1:04:11I'm very proud of this record and I feel that unless I could have bettered myself, I might as well
1:04:11 > 1:04:14- give up. - And it's a different vibration,
1:04:14 > 1:04:16- it's got a sort of Motown groove. - Yes.
1:04:16 > 1:04:19What's the first music that you listened to?
1:04:19 > 1:04:21A lot of jazz, really, a lot of Sarah Vaughan,
1:04:21 > 1:04:24loads of Sarah Vaughan songs - "April In Paris",
1:04:24 > 1:04:28but I think one of my earliest memories is listening to my granddad
1:04:28 > 1:04:32play "Tenderly", my Pop Larry, God rest his soul. "Tenderly".
1:04:32 > 1:04:35Did your granddad play an instrument or did he play the record?
1:04:35 > 1:04:39- No, he'd play it off the record. - Do you know how to sing that?
1:04:39 > 1:04:43- Yes.- Would you give that a go?- Yeah! - Shall we give "Tenderly" a go?
1:04:43 > 1:04:47Well, I think we should get a tempo, hang on.
1:04:47 > 1:04:49Could you give us a bit of this?
1:04:59 > 1:05:06# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly
1:05:08 > 1:05:15# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly
1:05:15 > 1:05:23# I can't forget how two hearts met, breathlessly
1:05:23 > 1:05:26# Your arms opened wide
1:05:26 > 1:05:31# And closed me inside
1:05:31 > 1:05:38# You took my love, you took my heart so tenderly. #
1:05:43 > 1:05:46- CHEERING AND APPLAUSE - Aah, your granddad would love that.
1:05:46 > 1:05:50- We love it too. Amy Winehouse! - Thanks for having me.
1:05:50 > 1:05:53Jimmy Cliff. I saw him. I went in for his rehearsals.
1:05:53 > 1:05:55I was standing as close as what I am to you,
1:05:55 > 1:05:59watching him sing Many Rivers To Cross. That was pretty special.
1:05:59 > 1:06:03# Many rivers I've crossed
1:06:03 > 1:06:07# But just where to begin
1:06:08 > 1:06:11# Playing for time? #
1:06:11 > 1:06:15I saw Wild Beast on there. That was the first time I'd heard them.
1:06:15 > 1:06:21It was... Quite often there are new artists, which is always good.
1:06:21 > 1:06:24There is so little music TV on, as everyone knows.
1:06:24 > 1:06:28We'd really suffer without it, really.
1:06:28 > 1:06:30# Watch me, watch me
1:06:33 > 1:06:35# Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh...
1:06:35 > 1:06:39# Oh-oh-oh... #
1:06:39 > 1:06:41'92 was the first time I done it,
1:06:41 > 1:06:42when my first solo album come out.
1:06:42 > 1:06:45I pretty much did it every time I put a record out, really,
1:06:45 > 1:06:49which is quite a few times over the last 250 years, whatever it's been.
1:07:10 > 1:07:14# I don't care how long this lasts
1:07:14 > 1:07:19# We have no future Oh, we have no past
1:07:19 > 1:07:23# I write this now while I'm in control
1:07:23 > 1:07:27# I choose the words and how the melody goes
1:07:27 > 1:07:31# Along winding streets We walked hand in hand
1:07:31 > 1:07:36# How I long for the sharp wind To take my breath away again
1:07:36 > 1:07:41# I run my fingers through your hair
1:07:41 > 1:07:44# Hair like a wheat field I'd run through
1:07:44 > 1:07:47# That I'd run through
1:07:47 > 1:07:49# And, I miss you so
1:07:50 > 1:07:53# Oh, I miss you so
1:07:56 > 1:07:58# Now you're gone
1:07:58 > 1:08:00# I feel so alone
1:08:00 > 1:08:04# Ooh, said I miss you so
1:08:04 > 1:08:05# I do
1:08:14 > 1:08:18# Sent you a flower A sunflower bright
1:08:18 > 1:08:23# Cos you cloud my days Messing up my nights
1:08:23 > 1:08:27# Right the way up to the top of your head
1:08:27 > 1:08:31# Sun-shower kisses I felt we had
1:08:34 > 1:08:35# I miss you so
1:08:37 > 1:08:40# Yeah, darling, I miss you so
1:08:42 > 1:08:44# Now you're gone
1:08:44 > 1:08:47# I feel so alone
1:08:47 > 1:08:50# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so
1:09:11 > 1:09:13# Well, I miss you so
1:09:15 > 1:09:18# Oh, darling, I miss you so
1:09:20 > 1:09:22# Now you're gone
1:09:22 > 1:09:25# I feel so alone
1:09:25 > 1:09:28# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so
1:09:37 > 1:09:40# OH! All I gotta do
1:09:40 > 1:09:42# Is think of you
1:09:43 > 1:09:46Wo-oh-oh and I miss you so
1:09:47 > 1:09:49# Baby, I
1:09:49 > 1:09:51# I'm afraid to say why
1:09:52 > 1:09:55# Oh-oh-oh, that I miss you so
1:09:55 > 1:09:56# I do
1:10:05 > 1:10:06# Baby, I
1:10:06 > 1:10:09# I'm afraid to say why
1:10:10 > 1:10:12# Wo-oh-oh, that I miss you so
1:10:12 > 1:10:14# I do. #
1:10:42 > 1:10:46I think whether it's politics, sport, whatever it is, what you need
1:10:46 > 1:10:49for great communicators is a combination
1:10:49 > 1:10:51of real knowledge, proper knowledge,
1:10:51 > 1:10:55and enthusiasm. When it comes to music, no-one beats Jools Holland
1:10:55 > 1:11:01for that. He has kept really good, serious popular music,
1:11:01 > 1:11:06a big spread of different performers and bands, on our screens
1:11:06 > 1:11:08for a very long time, which nobody else has done.
1:11:08 > 1:11:10Lily Allen, welcome to our show!
1:11:10 > 1:11:14When I was in, Sonic Youth were on and also the great Lily Allen,
1:11:14 > 1:11:18and I got at least four or five kisses from her, which was,
1:11:18 > 1:11:21I think, my career highlight of all time. Thanks, Jools.
1:11:21 > 1:11:24# I wanna be rich and I want lots of money
1:11:24 > 1:11:28# I don't care about clever I don't care about funny
1:11:28 > 1:11:32# I want loads of clothes And fuck-loads of diamonds
1:11:32 > 1:11:35# I heard people die while they're trying to find them
1:11:35 > 1:11:39# I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
1:11:39 > 1:11:42# Cos everyone knows that's how you get famous
1:11:42 > 1:11:46# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror
1:11:46 > 1:11:49# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner
1:11:49 > 1:11:55# I don't know what's right and what's real any more
1:11:56 > 1:12:01# I don't know how I'm meant to feel
1:12:01 > 1:12:04# Any mo-o-o-o-ore
1:12:04 > 1:12:08# When do you think it will all become clear?
1:12:11 > 1:12:18# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear
1:12:24 > 1:12:29# Life's about filmstars and less about mothers
1:12:29 > 1:12:32# It's all about fast cars and cussing each other
1:12:32 > 1:12:36# But it doesn't matter cos I'm packing plastic
1:12:36 > 1:12:40# And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic
1:12:40 > 1:12:43# I am a weapon of massive consumption
1:12:43 > 1:12:46# It's not my fault It's how I'm programmed to function
1:12:46 > 1:12:50# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror
1:12:50 > 1:12:53# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner
1:12:53 > 1:13:00# I don't know what's right and what's real any more
1:13:01 > 1:13:05# I don't know how I'm meant to feel
1:13:05 > 1:13:08# Any mo-o-o-o-ore
1:13:08 > 1:13:13# When do you think it will all become clear?
1:13:15 > 1:13:22# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear
1:13:37 > 1:13:40# Forget about guns And forget ammunition
1:13:40 > 1:13:44# Cos I'm killing them all on my own little mission
1:13:44 > 1:13:47# I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner
1:13:47 > 1:13:51# And everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner
1:13:51 > 1:13:57# I don't know what's right and what's real any more
1:13:59 > 1:14:02# I don't know how I'm meant to feel
1:14:02 > 1:14:05# Any mo-o-o-o-ore
1:14:05 > 1:14:10# When do you think it will all become clear?
1:14:13 > 1:14:19# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear. #
1:14:19 > 1:14:21APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
1:14:26 > 1:14:30For me, the whole experience of watching Later is what I don't expect to see.
1:14:30 > 1:14:31That's part of why I watch it.
1:14:31 > 1:14:34I tune in to watch the bands I'm a fan of,
1:14:34 > 1:14:38cos I know they'll perform well, stakes are high on the show,
1:14:38 > 1:14:42but also I get to watch classic performances from...
1:14:42 > 1:14:44timeless musicians who've been around a long time.
1:14:44 > 1:14:49A lot of my favourite performances are strange things like Michael McDonald
1:14:49 > 1:14:53and stuff like that because I've never seen them sing before
1:14:53 > 1:14:57and watching him and Jools do a duet is something really special.
1:14:57 > 1:15:00# ..Some day, somewhere
1:15:01 > 1:15:03# She will return... #
1:15:03 > 1:15:05But for me, on a rock level,
1:15:05 > 1:15:09the one that stood out as soon as I had to think about this
1:15:09 > 1:15:11was At The Drive-In.
1:15:11 > 1:15:15They did One Arm Scissor and that was in 2000, I think,
1:15:15 > 1:15:21and that was a really game-changing moment for rock and roll.
1:15:21 > 1:15:27Because Later, then, as it is today, was established as the place to go
1:15:27 > 1:15:30and perform for bands, and to watch as a fan.
1:15:30 > 1:15:34Up to that point... We'd been coming off the back of the Britpop thing
1:15:34 > 1:15:41and we were in a pop whirlwind. It was Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Westlife and Boyzone
1:15:41 > 1:15:44and there was singer-songwriters in the form of Travis and stuff,
1:15:44 > 1:15:47but no-one was really kicking the door down.
1:15:47 > 1:15:50And when I saw that performance, and I knew the song and the band,
1:15:50 > 1:15:53but to me, it must have felt like watching MC5,
1:15:53 > 1:15:57or something, you know? It had that incredible punk rock spirit
1:15:57 > 1:16:01with this amazing tune that was rumbling underneath
1:16:01 > 1:16:05but with a total disregard to the craft of the song
1:16:05 > 1:16:07and everything thrown into the performance.
1:16:07 > 1:16:10Somehow that benefited the song.
1:16:10 > 1:16:16I don't quite know how, it's detuned everywhere and they miss cue-points, everything's shambolic,
1:16:16 > 1:16:19but the spirit of that performance stood out to me as
1:16:19 > 1:16:21one of the great Later moments.
1:16:31 > 1:16:35# Yes, this is a campaign Slithered entrails in the cargo bay
1:16:40 > 1:16:44# Neutered is the vastness Hallow vacuum check the oxygen tanks
1:16:49 > 1:16:53# They hibernate But have they kissed the ground Pucker up and kiss the asphalt now
1:16:58 > 1:17:03# Tease this amputation Splintered larynx it has access
1:17:05 > 1:17:09# Cut away, cut away
1:17:09 > 1:17:12# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:17:12 > 1:17:15# Cut away, cut away
1:17:15 > 1:17:18# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:17:18 > 1:17:20# Cut away, cut away
1:17:20 > 1:17:24# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:17:24 > 1:17:26# Cut away, cut away
1:17:39 > 1:17:42# Banked on Memory
1:17:42 > 1:17:44# Mummified Circuitry
1:17:44 > 1:17:47# Skin graft Machinery
1:17:47 > 1:17:50# Sputnik sickles found in the seats
1:17:50 > 1:17:54# Self-destruct Sequence
1:17:54 > 1:17:56# This station is non-operational
1:17:56 > 1:17:59# Species Growing
1:17:59 > 1:18:02# Bubbles in an IV
1:18:15 > 1:18:17# I... I...
1:18:17 > 1:18:19# Can't get away
1:18:19 > 1:18:23# I... I...
1:18:23 > 1:18:27# Can't get away
1:18:31 > 1:18:33# Cut away
1:18:33 > 1:18:36# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:18:36 > 1:18:39# Cut away, cut away
1:18:39 > 1:18:42# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:18:42 > 1:18:44# Cut away, cut away
1:18:44 > 1:18:47# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:18:47 > 1:18:51# Cut away, cut away
1:18:57 > 1:19:00# Dissect a trillion sighs away
1:19:00 > 1:19:02# Will you get this letter?
1:19:02 > 1:19:05# Jagged pulp sliced in my veins
1:19:05 > 1:19:08# I write to remember
1:19:10 > 1:19:12# Cause I'm a million miles away
1:19:12 > 1:19:14# Will you get this letter?
1:19:14 > 1:19:17# Jagged pulp sliced in my veins
1:19:17 > 1:19:20# I write to remember
1:19:34 > 1:19:36# Cut...
1:19:40 > 1:19:43# Cut away, cut away
1:19:43 > 1:19:46# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:19:46 > 1:19:49# Cut away, cut away
1:19:49 > 1:19:52# Send transmission from the one-armed scissor
1:19:52 > 1:19:55# Cut away, cut away
1:19:58 > 1:20:01# Cut away, cut away
1:20:01 > 1:20:04# Cut away, cut away
1:20:04 > 1:20:08# Cut away, cut away... #
1:20:10 > 1:20:12APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
1:20:24 > 1:20:27PIANO PLAYS
1:20:27 > 1:20:30Can me mate have his chair back please?
1:20:30 > 1:20:33My first time on Jools Holland was in 2006
1:20:33 > 1:20:35and I'd only just been signed.
1:20:35 > 1:20:39They picked me... You know when they have the new talent?
1:20:39 > 1:20:42They did it with KT Tunstall and stuff like that.
1:20:42 > 1:20:45So I did that and it was really, really frightening.
1:20:45 > 1:20:49I think someone pulled out and it was... Oh, Bjork was on it,
1:20:49 > 1:20:53Paul McCartney was on it and it was my first time being in a TV studio,
1:20:53 > 1:20:54let alone actually being on TV.
1:20:54 > 1:20:59I have the fondest memories of that. Meeting Jools,
1:20:59 > 1:21:02the hallways, the dressing rooms, the floor,
1:21:02 > 1:21:05it was so much bigger... I always thought it was tiny
1:21:05 > 1:21:09cos everyone says studios are never as big as they look on TV and it was just massive.
1:21:09 > 1:21:12It was just amazing. It was the best night ever. When I started,
1:21:12 > 1:21:15my guitar wasn't on, so I thought I'd have to do it again,
1:21:15 > 1:21:19and everyone else got cleared and didn't have to do their performance again
1:21:19 > 1:21:23but I was frightened I'd have to sing in front of a Beatle again!
1:21:23 > 1:21:26Now, making her TV debut,
1:21:26 > 1:21:30we welcome, from Brixton, Adele.
1:21:43 > 1:21:46# Daydreamer
1:21:46 > 1:21:48# Sitting on the seat
1:21:48 > 1:21:50# Soaking up the sun
1:21:50 > 1:21:54# He is a real lover
1:21:54 > 1:21:57# Making up the past
1:21:57 > 1:22:02# And feeling up his girl like he's never felt her figure before
1:22:10 > 1:22:13# A jaw-dropper
1:22:13 > 1:22:15# Looks good when he walks
1:22:15 > 1:22:17# He's the subject of their talk
1:22:17 > 1:22:22# He would be hard to chase
1:22:22 > 1:22:25# But good to catch and he could change the world
1:22:25 > 1:22:28# With his hands behind his back, oh
1:22:38 > 1:22:42# You can find him
1:22:42 > 1:22:48# Sitting on your doorstep...
1:22:48 > 1:22:51# Wai...ting
1:22:51 > 1:22:56# Fo-o-o-o-o-o-or a surprise
1:22:57 > 1:22:59# And he will feel like
1:22:59 > 1:23:02# He's been there for
1:23:02 > 1:23:06# Hours...
1:23:06 > 1:23:10# And you can tell that he'll be there
1:23:10 > 1:23:16# For life...
1:23:24 > 1:23:27# Daydreamer
1:23:27 > 1:23:29# With eyes that make you melt
1:23:29 > 1:23:32# He lends his coat for shelter
1:23:32 > 1:23:36# Plus he's there for you when he shouldn't be
1:23:36 > 1:23:39# But he stays all the same
1:23:39 > 1:23:42# Waits for you then sees you through
