:15:38. > :15:44.Yes, it is. What inspired you to make this record? Well, it's a time

:15:44. > :15:47.for me to make a new album, first of all, and I always like to

:15:47. > :15:52.highlight and reflect on what's going on in the world as well as my

:15:52. > :15:56.own life, what I'm doing, and that's the inspiration, just from

:15:56. > :15:59.living my life and intermingling with everyone It sounds to me like

:15:59. > :16:05.you're going back to your roots a little bit in this. Would I be

:16:05. > :16:08.right in thinking that? Yes, going back to my roots because this album

:16:08. > :16:14.is like the completion of a chapter that was incomplete, so I decided

:16:14. > :16:18.to go forward to the roots on this one. You have written some amazing

:16:18. > :16:23.songs, but you have also done some covers by people. Which are the

:16:23. > :16:29.people You have covered? Guns of Brixton by the Clash because of my

:16:29. > :16:33.connection with Joe Strummer. The last song he did was with me on my

:16:33. > :16:36.last album, so that's one of the covers I have done. He was great,

:16:36. > :16:41.wasn't he? Fantastic. Yes. And the thing is, you started very young,

:16:41. > :16:46.really, didn't you, in music? How did you get your start in

:16:46. > :16:52.music? Oh, I - you know, I have always known from a very early age

:16:52. > :16:56.singing in church and things like that that music is what I love -

:16:56. > :17:00.the arts. Actually, I like acting more, but music came easier to do,

:17:00. > :17:04.so I did that. I just pursued that, you know? When I left the country,

:17:05. > :17:09.I grew up in the country, then when I went to the city, Kingston, I

:17:09. > :17:13.just had some songs, and I found out who I could get them recorded

:17:13. > :17:19.with. Your first hit I think you had when you were 14, is that

:17:19. > :17:22.right? Yes. In 1960, so the same year as Jamaican independence. Can

:17:22. > :17:27.we have a little bit because it's just a sweet song. I used to dance

:44:58. > :45:03.last in our current series, but on to the next few weeks at the same

:45:03. > :45:06.time are some incredible films all about punk music, which was, of

:45:06. > :45:11.course, invented here in Britain and London and everything. These

:45:11. > :45:18.are amazing films, and one of the people they feature rather allot is

:45:19. > :45:26.this man here, TV Smith. Of course, we - I remember, of

:45:26. > :45:31.course, you in the adverts - this great punk band you were a part of.

:45:31. > :45:37.What was your first introduction of the world of punk? Well, we moved

:45:37. > :45:43.to London in '76 and were one of the first bands to play at the

:45:43. > :45:50.Roxie. By the beginning of '77 it was all kicking off. We played that

:45:50. > :45:55.club, and within the first week we were at 20, 30 bands. How many

:45:55. > :45:59.people played... We supported. was one of them. It was great,

:45:59. > :46:04.really good. I remember it well. What would you say, maybe a hundred

:46:04. > :46:09.people I would have thought. Yeah. I would think you were be pushed to

:46:09. > :46:13.get 70, a hundred people in there. But what do you think - what was it

:46:13. > :46:17.that created punk music? What were things like before there was punk I

:46:17. > :46:21.suppose? Well, it was a big music industry, and lots of bands were

:46:21. > :46:25.just satisfied with what they were doing. They weren't pushing against

:46:25. > :46:28.anything. The situation in the country was very bad, and the

:46:29. > :46:33.musicians were ignoring it. They were presenting the same old thing

:46:33. > :46:37.over and over again, and we needed something new, and loads of punk

:46:37. > :46:41.bands came in. They stormed in. They took over. They all did

:46:41. > :46:46.something they believed in - lots of new things happening, lots of

:46:46. > :46:49.excitement. Yes, and I should also - which you don't see so much

:46:49. > :46:53.anymore which is couldn't care less. We don't care what you think of us.

:46:53. > :46:57.This is what we do sort of thing, which is almost like a blues

:46:57. > :47:00.attitude. Definitely. There is definitely a tradition of it that

:47:00. > :47:04.musicians say we don't care about you. We're going to do what we want,

:47:04. > :47:09.and if that doesn't happen, things carry on the same way they ever do.

:47:09. > :47:13.Do you think in the punk time it was bait like in the medieval time

:47:13. > :47:18.or in the Renaissance - we look back and go, we're in the

:47:18. > :47:23.Renaissance. They didn't go, we're in the Renaissance now! But did

:47:23. > :47:27.they realise what was happening? don't think we thought about it.

:47:27. > :47:32.That's the thing in these great moments. You seize the opportunity

:47:32. > :47:37.and don't sit around thinking it's of historical significance. But we

:47:37. > :47:42.are! 35 years later, here we are. Now we've got a little bit of

:47:42. > :47:47.footage of you on Top Of The Pops, quite rare for a punk group. Punk

:47:47. > :47:53.groups weren't welcome on Top Of The Pops. Top Of The Pops was a

:47:53. > :47:58.traditional thing. They wanted nice, happy, clap-along bands, and the

:47:58. > :48:02.punk groups were popular enough to get in the chart, so they couldn't

:48:03. > :48:08.resist us. Guaranteed the stillly

:48:49. > :48:52.you mean and getting out there and looking people in the eyes and

:48:52. > :49:02.giving them what you believe is the truth. Yes, a little bit of

:49:02. > :49:05.
