0:13:35 > 0:13:39APPLAUSE
0:13:43 > 0:13:46Thank you, Foals!
0:13:46 > 0:13:51Lovely song called Inhaler from their Holy Fire LP.
0:13:51 > 0:13:55So now, one of the great, actually one of the greatest guitarists
0:13:55 > 0:13:57Britain has ever produced, a man that started off
0:13:57 > 0:13:59playing sessions for everybody
0:13:59 > 0:14:03and ended up playing for one of the most popular groups on earth.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05We welcome, Jimmy Page!
0:14:05 > 0:14:08APPLAUSE
0:14:08 > 0:14:10Very nice.
0:14:10 > 0:14:14First of all, welcome to the show. It's great to have you here. Very pleased.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16- Is that really your beer? - No, it's not my beer.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19It's not my red wine. Love the way they thought that's what we'd have.
0:14:19 > 0:14:21- It's been put there as a prop. - I see, I see.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23If you'd rather have a red wine, do.
0:14:23 > 0:14:26Now, the first thing I've got to ask you, cos you really are
0:14:26 > 0:14:29of the guitar, lots of people have copied your style.
0:14:29 > 0:14:32Lots of young guitarists have listened to you and thought,
0:14:32 > 0:14:34"That's what I want to play like."
0:14:34 > 0:14:37Who was it that wanted to play like when you first started out?
0:14:39 > 0:14:42Well, when I was a kid, when I first started playing,
0:14:42 > 0:14:46it's undeniable, Lonnie Donegan and his group was the skiffle group
0:14:46 > 0:14:49of our era that caught everybody up.
0:14:49 > 0:14:55But bit by bit, there was no doubt it was Scotty Moore with Elvis
0:14:55 > 0:15:00and that was just phenomenal, his playing and what he made,
0:15:00 > 0:15:03- his architecture behind Elvis. - Yeah, yeah.
0:15:03 > 0:15:07And then James Burton and it sort of went on from there
0:15:07 > 0:15:10into sort of Blues players.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14To be honest with you, I've just got such a whole collection of heroes
0:15:14 > 0:15:16that, you know, I owe my playing to, to be honest.
0:15:16 > 0:15:20- Do you still to listen to them now? - Yeah, to be honest with you,
0:15:20 > 0:15:22like Chuck Berry, for example, yeah.
0:15:22 > 0:15:23If I'm a little bit down,
0:15:23 > 0:15:26I just put those records on and I'm way up in the air again.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29Speaking of being way up in the air,
0:15:29 > 0:15:33you've got this DVD out of this incredible show,
0:15:33 > 0:15:35which was the Led Zeppelin reunion.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38And what was the last gig you did before this in 2007?
0:15:38 > 0:15:41With Jason, I think it was the Atlantic 40th,
0:15:41 > 0:15:46which would have been about 27 years before that, so.
0:15:46 > 0:15:47We leave it a bit between gigs.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49Exactly, you don't rush into it, exactly.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53What made you decide to reform at that point?
0:15:53 > 0:15:56Well, there was a call, you know,
0:15:56 > 0:16:01to do this date for Ahmet's charity and the foundation.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05- Ahmet Ertegun?- Ahmet Ertegun, yeah, of Atlantic Records.
0:16:05 > 0:16:09And he was such a wonderful sort of presence
0:16:09 > 0:16:14in the music industry and everyone came to this to do this.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16Originally it was said, "Do 20 minutes,"
0:16:16 > 0:16:19well there was no way we could do 20 minutes,
0:16:19 > 0:16:21so we ended up doing whatever it was -
0:16:21 > 0:16:22two hours and 20 minutes.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25- Which is fantastic.- After having not playing for so long,
0:16:25 > 0:16:29it seemed really important to go out there and show what we were about.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33- It's fantastic sounding thing. Let's have a little look.- All right.
0:16:35 > 0:16:36# Ah-ha
0:16:36 > 0:16:38- AUDIENCE:- # Ah-ha
0:16:38 > 0:16:39# Ah-ha
0:16:39 > 0:16:41# Ah-ha
0:16:41 > 0:16:42# Ah
0:16:42 > 0:16:44# Ah-ha
0:16:44 > 0:16:46# Oh
0:16:46 > 0:16:49MUSIC: "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin
0:17:13 > 0:17:16Very exciting. Very exciting.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18What a riff!
0:17:18 > 0:17:20I mean, 20 million people.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23Yes, let's just bask in that figure for a moment, shall we?
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Not 20, not 20,000, not 200,000,
0:17:26 > 0:17:29but 20 million people applied for tickets and couldn't get them.
0:17:29 > 0:17:30That's a lot of people, isn't it?
0:17:30 > 0:17:32That's more than all of these people.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34It is when you're doing one show.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37- Yes, exactly. Anyway, they couldn't get in.- No.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39So, all those people who couldn't get tickets,
0:17:39 > 0:17:41would you do any more shows for them?
0:17:42 > 0:17:46I don't... Jools, it's been five years, now, since that show.
0:17:46 > 0:17:51Come December, it's five years and there hasn't been
0:17:51 > 0:17:56any sort of whispers or hints to play all together again.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59So, you know. At least we've got this.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Exactly. Which is a lovely reminder of a great show.
0:18:01 > 0:18:04Looking back at it all, the whole of the amazing history
0:18:04 > 0:18:07of Led Zeppelin and your own musical career,
0:18:07 > 0:18:10is there anything you would have ever done differently?
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Erm... no, I don't think so.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16It's a hypothetical question, I don't really know.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18It's been pretty good.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21You know, this is pretty good too. We're still there. We're still there.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24- We're still rocking, man. - That's very good.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11And before that,
0:33:11 > 0:33:13thank you, Luisa Sobral.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:33:16 > 0:33:18Thanks for the vocalisation... harmonisation there.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21So our next guest has an extraordinary story.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24His career was struggling in the 1970s in America.
0:33:24 > 0:33:29And, unbeknown to him, he had become a huge star in South Africa.
0:33:29 > 0:33:32There's a film all about this amazing story,
0:33:32 > 0:33:33Searching For Sugar Man.
0:33:33 > 0:33:36And he is, who I welcome now, Rodriguez.
0:33:36 > 0:33:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:33:38 > 0:33:42- Welcome to our show. It's great to see you here.- Hello, hello.
0:33:42 > 0:33:47So, so you recorded two albums in the early 1970s...
0:33:47 > 0:33:50- Yes.- ..and then, you seem to sort of disappear.
0:33:50 > 0:33:52What happened? Did you stop making music?
0:33:52 > 0:33:54Well, the company went under.
0:33:54 > 0:33:59I...I recorded, in '71, my last album, Coming From Reality,
0:33:59 > 0:34:04and the company went under and, from '74 till '98, I pretty much stayed...
0:34:04 > 0:34:07Except, I stayed at others' music scene,
0:34:07 > 0:34:10- but I did do two tours of Australia. - Right.
0:34:10 > 0:34:13- So you sort of managed to stay in there a little bit.- Yes.
0:34:13 > 0:34:16But then, 30 years later,
0:34:16 > 0:34:19- you were contacted by a South African fan...- Yes.
0:34:19 > 0:34:22..who explained to you that, in South-Africa, you were more popular
0:34:22 > 0:34:24than sort of Elvis or something.
0:34:24 > 0:34:26Well, as the story goes,
0:34:26 > 0:34:31but Steven Sugarman came to my house in Detroit and he showed me CDs
0:34:31 > 0:34:34and he told me about the stories about the fanbase
0:34:34 > 0:34:36of Afrikaans in South Africa,
0:34:36 > 0:34:39and that the first time I knew about that, yes.
0:34:39 > 0:34:41And so, what did you do then, what...you know?
0:34:41 > 0:34:45Well, we planned to go there and, in '98, we did our first tour there.
0:34:45 > 0:34:49And it was pretty amazing. The turnout was like 5,000 seaters.
0:34:49 > 0:34:52- So, from nothing to that, it was pretty...- That's great.
0:34:52 > 0:34:55Late in your career as well, really, you know, that's...
0:34:55 > 0:34:58Yeah. Some have sold in the '70s and the thing is yeah, yeah,
0:34:58 > 0:35:00so for that to happen...
0:35:00 > 0:35:02So all the people there loved you and loved your music,
0:35:02 > 0:35:05- but what did they think had happened to you?- Well, the rumours were
0:35:05 > 0:35:08that I had demised different ways.
0:35:08 > 0:35:12Some thought that I had burnt myself on stage and...
0:35:12 > 0:35:14- Burnt yourself on stage? - Yeah.- That's strange.
0:35:14 > 0:35:18But how could a rumour like that start without some sort of basis?
0:35:18 > 0:35:21Well, I don't know how it started. Maybe, he went up in smoke
0:35:21 > 0:35:25or went up in a blaze of glory or he burnt out.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27So maybe that was a possible explanation.
0:35:27 > 0:35:29- So they thought you were dead?- Yes.
0:35:29 > 0:35:32- And that worshiped all this music you'd made.- Yeah.
0:35:32 > 0:35:33And when they found out you were alive,
0:35:33 > 0:35:35- huge celebrations all round. - Oh, yeah.
0:35:35 > 0:35:36LAUGHTER
0:35:36 > 0:35:40I've been, I've been down there four times and it's a beautiful country,
0:35:40 > 0:35:42gorgeous people, Afrikaans.
0:35:42 > 0:35:45Well, we've got a little footage of your first concert in South Africa.
0:35:45 > 0:35:47- Oh, OK, yeah. This is from the movie, I think.- Yeah.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46And the soundtrack is out already.
0:36:46 > 0:36:48And in the film, Searching for Sugar Man,
0:36:48 > 0:36:51it shows you briefly in London in the early 1970s,
0:36:51 > 0:36:53- what was happening there?- I had...
0:36:53 > 0:36:56I came to London on the invitation of Steve Rowland,
0:36:56 > 0:36:59he was an actor turned music producer.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01And he produced my second album.
0:37:01 > 0:37:06And we did it in Lansdowne Studios, on Lansdowne Road, and it was...
0:37:06 > 0:37:09We thought it was going to happen, but it didn't happen either, so...
0:37:09 > 0:37:13- So this great success...- Yes. - ..really comes later in your career.
0:37:13 > 0:37:15Was it much sweeter, would you say, the second time around?
0:37:15 > 0:37:18I think that's one way you could put it, yes.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21And it's better late than never, you know, so...
0:37:21 > 0:37:23- Yeah, and we're delighted to have you here now.- Thank you so much.
0:37:23 > 0:37:26What are you going to be playing for us in a moment?
0:37:26 > 0:37:28I'm going to do Crucify Your Mind, if that's OK.
0:37:28 > 0:37:30We're looking forward to that very much indeed.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54# And prostitutes your loss?
0:41:54 > 0:41:57# Were you tortured by your own thirst
0:41:57 > 0:41:59# In those pleasures that you seek
0:41:59 > 0:42:02# That made you Tom the curious
0:42:02 > 0:42:05# That makes you James the weak?
0:42:15 > 0:42:18# And you claim you've got something going
0:42:21 > 0:42:23# Something you call unique
0:42:26 > 0:42:29# But I've seen your self-pity showing
0:42:31 > 0:42:34# When the tears rolled down your cheeks
0:42:44 > 0:42:46# Soon you know I'll leave you
0:42:46 > 0:42:49# And I'll never look behind
0:42:49 > 0:42:52# Cos I was born for the purpose
0:42:52 > 0:42:54# That crucifies your mind
0:42:54 > 0:42:57# So con, convince your mirror
0:42:57 > 0:42:59# As you've always done before
0:42:59 > 0:43:02# Giving substance to shadows
0:43:02 > 0:43:05# Giving substance ever more
0:43:14 > 0:43:18# But you assume you got something to offer
0:43:20 > 0:43:24# Secrets shiny and new
0:43:26 > 0:43:29# But how much of it is repetition
0:43:31 > 0:43:34# That you didn't whisper to him too. #
0:43:46 > 0:43:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:43:54 > 0:43:56Rodriguez.
0:43:56 > 0:43:59Crucify Your Mind (Searching for Sugarman).
0:43:59 > 0:44:03Before that, we enjoyed Foals.
0:44:03 > 0:44:06CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:44:06 > 0:44:10Now, let's meet one of the originators of funk music,
0:44:10 > 0:44:12the one and only Mr Larry Graham.
0:44:12 > 0:44:13Welcome to the show.
0:44:13 > 0:44:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:44:16 > 0:44:20I loved, just when you started, when you started that groove,
0:44:20 > 0:44:24at the beginning of it, suddenly I thought, "This is great."
0:44:24 > 0:44:26It's so great to have you here.
0:44:26 > 0:44:29- I'm going to go back before we go forward a little bit.- OK.
0:44:29 > 0:44:34Cos, of course, you were one of the originators and one of the key members in Sly and the Family Stone.
0:44:34 > 0:44:35Yes.
0:44:35 > 0:44:36Now that group, really, for me,
0:44:36 > 0:44:40- they're unique, there's nothing else like them.- Thank you.
0:44:40 > 0:44:41Amazing music.
0:44:41 > 0:44:44It seemed to invent a whole new style.
0:44:44 > 0:44:46What's your take on it when you look back?
0:44:46 > 0:44:49Well, it was a different band for the time.
0:44:49 > 0:44:52It was male and female, black and white,
0:44:52 > 0:44:58we were playing a mixture of all kinds of music and so, you know,
0:44:58 > 0:45:00we were speaking about a lot of the things
0:45:00 > 0:45:02that were relevant during the times
0:45:02 > 0:45:03and people caught on to it,
0:45:03 > 0:45:08and really after Woodstock in front of half a million people
0:45:08 > 0:45:11that just launched our career into high gear.
0:45:11 > 0:45:15Yeah, it was great, cos nothing like it had been before that band.
0:45:15 > 0:45:20Because they seemed to mash up all these different things and your own thing came out.
0:45:20 > 0:45:22One of the things, of course, is your amazing bass style
0:45:22 > 0:45:26which has been much copied by people.
0:45:26 > 0:45:27How did you develop that style?
0:45:27 > 0:45:29Well, my mother and I worked together.
0:45:29 > 0:45:32My mother played piano and singing I played guitar.
0:45:32 > 0:45:35So at this one club we worked at
0:45:35 > 0:45:39they had an organ that had bass pedals and I would play the bass pedals with my foot
0:45:39 > 0:45:41at the same time as playing the guitar,
0:45:41 > 0:45:43so we got used to having the bottom.
0:45:43 > 0:45:44And then the organ broke down
0:45:44 > 0:45:49and now we sounded empty without that bottom.
0:45:49 > 0:45:52I ran bass temporarily until the organ could be repaired.
0:45:52 > 0:45:56It turned out it couldn't be repaired so I got stuck on the bass.
0:45:56 > 0:46:01And them my mother decided, "OK, we're just going to be piano and bass, no drums."
0:46:01 > 0:46:04So now I had to make up for not having the drums
0:46:04 > 0:46:06so I would thump the strings with my thumb
0:46:06 > 0:46:10and pluck it with my fingers, thumbing and plucking. Slap bass, out of necessity.
0:46:10 > 0:46:12Trying to make up for not having drums.
0:46:12 > 0:46:15And inventing a whole new style in the process.
0:46:15 > 0:46:17So recently you were sharing the stage with Prince
0:46:17 > 0:46:19who is on your record.
0:46:19 > 0:46:20How did all that come about?
0:46:20 > 0:46:22He's my really good friend.
0:46:22 > 0:46:24We met about 14 or 15 years ago.
0:46:24 > 0:46:27He was playing the big arena in Nashville, Tennessee
0:46:27 > 0:46:29and I was playing the amphitheatre
0:46:29 > 0:46:31and he heard I was in town
0:46:31 > 0:46:35and invited me to one of his famous after shows.
0:46:35 > 0:46:39And so we went to this club and we jammed together for the first time
0:46:39 > 0:46:40and we just connected immediately
0:46:40 > 0:46:43like we had been playing together for life,
0:46:43 > 0:46:48but what I didn't know is he was raised up on my music through Graham Central Station.
0:46:48 > 0:46:52And then he went back and got into Sly and the Family Stone.
0:46:52 > 0:46:57Now you have got this great new Graham Central Station record come out,
0:46:57 > 0:46:59what can people expect to hear?
0:46:59 > 0:47:02It's lovely to have a record if I may say so.
0:47:02 > 0:47:04- Oh, I love a record.- Thank you.
0:47:04 > 0:47:07Well, three of the cuts feature Prince,
0:47:07 > 0:47:11and one cut features Raphael Saadiq,
0:47:11 > 0:47:15and there's a remake of Stevie Wonder, my good friend Stevie, Higher Ground.
0:47:15 > 0:47:23And some of the songs we will be performing at the Jazz Cafe here in London on March 5th and 6th.
0:47:23 > 0:47:26If you forget the dates, look at larrygraham.com.
0:47:26 > 0:47:27Exactly!
0:47:27 > 0:47:30I'll never forget the dates!
0:47:30 > 0:47:32What are you going to play for us next?
0:47:32 > 0:47:35We're going to do a combination.
0:47:35 > 0:47:37There's a song called Throw-N-Down The Funk,
0:47:37 > 0:47:40we're going to hit you with that,
0:47:40 > 0:47:42and then going to slip you back in time
0:47:42 > 0:47:44and hit you with a little Dance To The Music.
0:47:44 > 0:47:46Oh, yes!
0:47:49 > 0:47:51It is fantastic to have you here.
0:47:51 > 0:47:52Looking forward to more.
0:47:52 > 0:47:55Larry Graham and Graham Central Station.

0:48:02 > 0:48:04We have Band Of Horses.
