:04:29. > :04:36.Welcome to Jools Holland. And Thank you Phoenix. Entertainment
:04:36. > :04:41.and more from them later. A talent from North Carolina
:04:41. > :04:49.tonight - we will be welcoming Eric Church.
:04:49. > :04:57.We'll have Laura Marling. And in this room, one of the most legendry
:04:57. > :05:04.bands of all time - the Eagles. Another amazing legend, we have
:05:04. > :05:09.Petula Clark. From West Africa, we are thrilled
:05:09. > :05:19.to have back in the studio Rokia Traore.
:05:19. > :05:19.
:05:19. > :09:11.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:09:11. > :09:21.But now, from London AlunaGeorge. We welcome a marvellous singer. We
:09:21. > :09:23.
:09:23. > :09:33.welcome her back - she has a lovely We'll hear songs now from Rokia
:09:33. > :09:33.
:09:33. > :13:06.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:13:06. > :13:12.Rokia Traore. She will be on the Pyramid Stage later in the year at
:13:12. > :13:17.Glastonbury. Yes, Rokia Traore. Now, the next people I am toing to have
:13:17. > :13:27.some routine inquir -- going to have some routine inquiries over
:13:27. > :13:27.
:13:27. > :13:33.here with, are the most successful band - yes, they are from the
:13:33. > :13:40.Eagles. Great to have you here and you are here with the history of
:13:40. > :13:45.the Eagles is coming out on a DVD. It is an extraordinary film. It
:13:45. > :13:48.will be shown as well on BBC Two very shortly. In doing this film,
:13:48. > :13:53.it must have made you look back at everything. Have you learned things
:13:53. > :13:57.from it, do you think that you didn't realise yourself about the
:13:57. > :14:02.didn't realise yourself about the band? Well, it helped me understand
:14:02. > :14:10.some stuff that I was always scratching my head about. Hearing
:14:10. > :14:19.the other guys - their part of the journey - a couple of times I said,
:14:19. > :14:23."Oh, I see! I see." Would you say that - is that true
:14:23. > :14:27.to you? Definitely. A very interesting ride. When I came to
:14:27. > :14:33.the band I heard all these stories that you see in the film, but I
:14:33. > :14:40.didn't get a lot of the detail. The first time I saw the rough cut I
:14:40. > :14:47.actually learnt some stuff myself. I think you came in '77. Joe you
:14:47. > :14:53.were in '75. The group existed already up until then. Was it hard
:14:53. > :14:58.to come into a group where they had two strong characters in it
:14:58. > :15:05.already? There were some band dynamics going on, which I had to
:15:05. > :15:10.step in and learn and adapt to. pecking order was already in
:15:10. > :15:15.existence When you first went in and joined the Eagles, what was
:15:16. > :15:21.your perception of the band and is that how it turned out, sort of
:15:21. > :15:30.thing? All I really knew is I loved the band. I loved all their records
:15:30. > :15:36.before I joined and I thought those vocals, with some rock'n'roll and
:15:36. > :15:44.lead guitar could be very powerful, so that is how I kind of came in.
:15:44. > :15:48.We all agreed that we would try me being in the band and out of that
:15:48. > :15:56.came Hotel California. After that there was no turning back. In fact
:15:56. > :16:00.we have a clip of Hotel California, from this history of the Eagles.
:16:00. > :16:07.# There she stood in the door way # Heard the mission bell
:16:07. > :16:12.# And I was thinking to myself # This could be heaven or this
:16:12. > :16:16.could be hell # If she lit up a candle and she
:16:16. > :16:19.showed me the way # There were voices down the
:16:20. > :16:27.corridor # I thought I heard them say
:16:27. > :16:37.# Welcome to the Hotel California # Such a lovely place
:16:37. > :16:38.
:16:39. > :16:45.# Such a lovely place # Fantastic stuff!
:16:45. > :16:51.Really, really wonderful stuff, I mean and then, I mean, in the 1970s,
:16:51. > :16:56.the group propelled, once you were all together, into earth-shattering
:16:56. > :17:03.success. Did it surprise you the success the band had? It was pretty
:17:03. > :17:08.successful by the time I joined. It continued before it actually fell
:17:08. > :17:14.apart, it went up another notch and then it kind of imploded for a
:17:14. > :17:24.while, for quite a while. Was it a champagne lifestyle all the way -
:17:24. > :17:28.one of the most successful group ever. We could do pretty much all
:17:28. > :17:32.we wanted. Everything you heard. is true. We dare not say it here on
:17:32. > :17:38.the programme. They could see a glimpse of that. Eventually after
:17:38. > :17:47.selling these millions of records, you got together in '94, but you
:17:47. > :17:52.split up. What was the reason for that? I think we achieved a success
:17:52. > :17:58.that we never dreamed. We never dreamed Hotel California would
:17:58. > :18:02.affect that many people on if planet and then it got bigger than
:18:02. > :18:10.that. Then we became financially important, and then it got bigger
:18:10. > :18:18.than that. A lot of non-musical stuff came along with the success
:18:18. > :18:26.that overshadowed the music, which is how we got there in the first.
:18:26. > :18:31.We kind of lost our perspective. Also we were workaholics. We didn't
:18:31. > :18:36.take enough breaks. Had we taken long vacations from each other, it
:18:36. > :18:43.may not have exploded like that. It came to a head and we had to stop.
:18:43. > :18:50.What is next for the band? Can we hope to see any tours or records?
:18:50. > :19:00.think so. The documentary is out and I think it is our 41st year as
:19:00. > :19:00.
:19:00. > :19:06.a band. We're going to regroup and retool and get a new show based
:19:06. > :19:11.around some of the retrospective stuff. I have heard some talk of
:19:12. > :19:20.coming over this side of the world too. We would love to see you,
:19:20. > :19:25.wouldn't we? Thank you very much for joining us. You can see the
:19:25. > :19:35.History of the Eagles next month on BBC Two and it is out on DVD. Now I
:19:35. > :19:35.
:19:35. > :22:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:22:50. > :22:56.go to this direction and welcome The wonderful Eric Church - a Drink
:22:56. > :23:01.In My Hand. Now we sweep around into the middle of the room, ing
:23:01. > :23:11.back somebody who appeared on this show at 17 - we are delighted to
:23:11. > :23:11.
:23:11. > :30:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:30:40. > :30:50.have her back now. We welcome Laura Phoenix. In a moment I will chat
:30:50. > :30:51.
:30:51. > :35:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:35:12. > :35:21.with Petula Clark. First another And now, at the piano, I am
:35:21. > :35:27.delighted to welcome somebody who come on with the big band - she is
:35:27. > :35:31.so amazing. We love her - it is Petula Clark. It is lovely to have
:35:31. > :35:39.you here. When you came on New Year's eve, you did one of the
:35:39. > :35:44.songs you did was Crazy, which is from your new album. Lots of brand
:35:44. > :35:50.new songs, some pletly brand new - what -- completely brand new - what
:35:50. > :35:56.draws you to a song? I don't know - what draws you to a song? It is
:35:56. > :36:02.music and lyrics. It is not just a great song, great lyrics - it's the
:36:02. > :36:07.combination of the two. These wonderful young songwriters were
:36:07. > :36:15.coming into the studio and I was like, yes, I want to do that. We
:36:15. > :36:21.did some covers, including Down Town, which I didn't want to do,
:36:21. > :36:28.but it is interesting. The Eagles and you have had a great success.
:36:28. > :36:34.You became a great star in France - which is unique. Do they have a
:36:34. > :36:38.different sense of music there - are they more romantic?
:36:38. > :36:44.language is more romantic. I didn't speak any French. I wanted to be
:36:44. > :36:47.with a bloke, you know. It was a love story and the career just
:36:47. > :36:56.followed. I learnt a lot about singing in a slightly different way.
:36:56. > :37:00.I saw Piaff and many other great artists. I was on tour and suddenly
:37:00. > :37:04.I saw people giving their hearts, their souls and their guts and
:37:04. > :37:10.everything in a song and I hadn't seen that before and that was quite
:37:11. > :37:16.a lesson for me. Well, it was one that went very well because you
:37:16. > :37:26.then had tremendous worldwide success. With the Tony Hatch songs
:37:26. > :37:28.
:37:28. > :37:31.- that sort of propelled.: We have # You walked out on me when we both
:37:31. > :37:41.disagree # Because to reason is not what you
:37:41. > :37:43.
:37:43. > :37:47.care for # I've heard it all a million times
:37:47. > :37:53.before # Take off your coat, my love
:37:53. > :37:57.# And close the door # Don't sleep in the subway,
:37:57. > :38:01.darling # Don't stand in the pouring rain
:38:01. > :38:05.# Don't sleep in the subway, darling
:38:06. > :38:15.# The night is long # Nothing's wrong
:38:16. > :38:24.
:38:25. > :38:29.APPLAUSE So glamorous - it seems like a
:38:29. > :38:33.glamorous time. Are things different now? I think it was from
:38:33. > :38:39.the States. It was well photographed and the songs were
:38:39. > :38:45.amazing. Tony went on writing fantastic songs. Glamorous well, I
:38:46. > :38:51.suppose I was working very hard. Seeing the guys from the Eagles - I
:38:51. > :38:58.was such a fan of all the music. American music of the '60s was
:38:58. > :39:03.amazing. It was a pretty intense time. I had two small children, I
:39:03. > :39:08.was trying to be a good wife, mother, performer and all the
:39:08. > :39:12.travelling and the stuff - you know all about that. Very busy? Yes,
:39:12. > :39:16.very busy. This new record is great. In a moment we will do the title
:39:16. > :39:20.track. Where does that one come from? Well, the hole of this record
:39:20. > :39:26.was very easy to do because it was, we weren't trying to prove anything,
:39:26. > :39:31.we were not trying to go back to the '60s and say it's time to do
:39:31. > :39:36.that again. We not do that any way. This is a totally different feel. I
:39:36. > :39:43.enjoy it immensely. Thank you very much, Petula Clark.
:39:43. > :39:49.APPLAUSE We will be hearing the wonderful
:39:49. > :39:59.Petula Clark in a moment. Now, as I said, bulging with talent, we go to
:39:59. > :39:59.
:39:59. > :46:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:46:19. > :46:29.The wonderful, the wonderful Petula Clark. Lost In You. Before that we
:46:29. > :46:29.
:46:29. > :50:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:50:18. > :50:28.heard AlunaGeorge. Now we welcome Laura Marling. Now we enjoy over
:50:28. > :50:28.
:50:28. > :53:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:53:15. > :53:25.here from North Carolina the sound # Maybe it's a suicide
:53:25. > :53:25.
:53:25. > :53:35.# I've got to get out while I'm still young
:53:35. > :53:45.
:53:45. > :53:53.# Maybe we were born to run # Oh-oh oh oh
:53:53. > :54:03.# Whoa-whoa # Yes like that
:54:03. > :54:03.
:54:03. > :59:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:59:05. > :59:15.Before that we enjoyed Eric Church. And now I am delighted have them
:59:15. > :59:15.
:59:15. > :02:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 232 seconds
:02:31. > :02:37.Thank you Phoenix. Marvellous to see them here in this
:02:37. > :02:42.room. If you have enjoyed being in this room with you, you can see us
:02:42. > :02:51.next week. As we have got to the end of this show, let's thank our
:02:51. > :02:55.guests and go back to Dave. Have you got something in the key of G?
:02:55. > :02:59.Nice! So, let's thank all our beautiful guests who have been here
:02:59. > :03:06.this evening. Let's thank the wonderful Petula Clark.
:03:06. > :03:14.APPLAUSE We were delighted to have the
:03:14. > :03:22.Eagles. APPLAUSE We loved Laura Marling. APPLAUSE.
:03:22. > :03:28.We really enjoyed much Eric Church. APPLAUSE
