0:18:56 > 0:18:59The delicious voice, the melodies, James Blake.
0:18:59 > 0:19:00Radio Silence.
0:19:02 > 0:19:04I'm holding this record with a perfectly good reason -
0:19:04 > 0:19:06the man that's made it is sitting here.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08It is - we welcome Martin Fry!
0:19:08 > 0:19:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:19:10 > 0:19:14- Good to see you, Martin.- Hello. - To celebrate the record coming out,
0:19:14 > 0:19:17- we've laid on this huge spread for you.- Fantastic.- Just tuck in.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20- It's a beautiful place.- Yes, it is a beautiful place.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23- Now, you've brought this out.- Yes. - The Lexicon Of Love II.
0:19:23 > 0:19:28And, um, it's a sequel to the original, in 1982.
0:19:28 > 0:19:32- So, there we are, 34 years later. - Very patient fans out there.- Yes.
0:19:32 > 0:19:36- It's taken a while.- It felt right. - What made you decide to...
0:19:36 > 0:19:38Yeah, yeah. The original came out in '82, way back,
0:19:38 > 0:19:41- with The Look of Love and Poison Arrow, and all this stuff.- Yes.
0:19:41 > 0:19:44Recent years, well, 30 years has rolled by, and I kind of
0:19:44 > 0:19:47thought I'd bring some wisdom and experience to a project.
0:19:47 > 0:19:49- Were you unhappy with the original? - No, it was fantastic.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51It was a great record, wasn't it?
0:19:51 > 0:19:53- It's public property, you know. - It was a huge hit.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56But it would be nice to go back and re-inhabit some of those songs,
0:19:56 > 0:19:58I thought. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall, with Anne Dudley
0:19:58 > 0:20:01conducting the Southbank Sinfonia.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04Playing a lot of shows with orchestras, so I thought I'd make...
0:20:04 > 0:20:07Well, calling it The Lexicon of Love II gave me the excuse to make
0:20:07 > 0:20:10a big, bold, orchestral, lavish record.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13And so what's changed, and what sort of thing has changed...?
0:20:13 > 0:20:16- The world's changed, hasn't it? - The world's changed? Yeah.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18It's a wonderful place. So, I thought I'd write
0:20:18 > 0:20:21some songs and see if the world was still a very romantic place.
0:20:21 > 0:20:25- And is it?- It is for me, yeah. Very much so. After all these years.
0:20:25 > 0:20:26- In the 1980s...- I think so.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29..presumably you would have walked into the pub, you know,
0:20:29 > 0:20:32the miners' strike's going on, there's people smoking and drinking,
0:20:32 > 0:20:35and doing all the things you can't do any more,
0:20:35 > 0:20:37was it romantic then, do you think,
0:20:37 > 0:20:40or do we look back through rose-tinted spectacles at the past?
0:20:40 > 0:20:45No, I think... Well, the past's gone, all we've got is the present.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47Today, yeah. I mean, I've been married 30 years,
0:20:47 > 0:20:50and I thought to myself, "That's probably one of the most significant
0:20:50 > 0:20:53"things that's happened to me." Yeah, I feel good about that.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55- That's quite a romantic idea. - My wife's here.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Very nice to meet you. Hello!
0:20:57 > 0:20:59- Congratulations!- Thank you.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02I thought I'd go back and find some inspiration in some
0:21:02 > 0:21:03romantic songs, yeah.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05Well, um...
0:21:05 > 0:21:07what sort of things were you listening to in the 1980s?
0:21:07 > 0:21:09What was your...
0:21:09 > 0:21:12James Chance And The Contortions, do you remember those guys?
0:21:12 > 0:21:14- Not really.- Joy Division.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17- Yes, of course. Yeah, yeah.- Earth, Wind and Fire, Chic. You know,
0:21:17 > 0:21:19we were trying to combine both
0:21:19 > 0:21:23the world of disco and the world of edgy pop, I guess, back then.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27- Yeah.- Now, we've got some lovely footage here of...
0:21:27 > 0:21:31- Well, I say it's lovely... - I've got a long illustrious past.
0:21:31 > 0:21:33No, it is. I mean, this record
0:21:33 > 0:21:36was a huge and important record when this came out.
0:21:36 > 0:21:40- So, let's have a look at this now. This is 1982, Poison Arrow.- OK.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43# If I were to say to you "Can you keep a secret?"
0:21:43 > 0:21:47# Would you know just what to do or where to keep it?
0:21:47 > 0:21:51# Then I say I love you Foul the situation
0:21:51 > 0:21:55# Hey, girl, I thought we were the right combination
0:21:55 > 0:21:58# Who broke my heart? You did, you did
0:21:58 > 0:22:02# Bow to the target Blame Cupid, Cupid
0:22:02 > 0:22:06# You think you're smart Stupid, stupid
0:22:06 > 0:22:10# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
0:22:10 > 0:22:11# Shoot that poison arrow
0:22:14 > 0:22:16# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
0:22:17 > 0:22:19# Shoot that poison arrow...#
0:22:21 > 0:22:24- APPLAUSE - Thank you!
0:22:25 > 0:22:27You had to have a gold lame suit back then.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30- Have you still got that suit?- No, I do not have that suit. No, no.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33- What happened to it?- That suit went missing. I left it in Japan.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35After about six months touring,
0:22:35 > 0:22:37I kind of left it in the Keio Plaza Hotel.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40Are you saying there's a Japanese man walking around in that suit?
0:22:40 > 0:22:44- Possibly, yes.- Palming himself off as you, or just enjoying himself.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47- I think so, yeah.- Just relaxing of an evening in it.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49- Yeah, a gold suit. Elvis had one, didn't he?- Yeah.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52- Yeah, many, many have worn those suits.- You were all from Sheffield?
0:22:52 > 0:22:56- Yeah, originally.- Sheffield, early on, there were people like
0:22:56 > 0:22:59Joe Cocker, Paul Carrick, then there was Human League, all of you.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01Later, you've got Pulp, Richard Hall, Arctic Monkeys.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04it's got a big history. Why do you think that is?
0:23:04 > 0:23:07Sheffield in the early '80s was a great place to be Bohemian.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10Yeah, and have no money. It was a great place.
0:23:10 > 0:23:12You could go and see Cabaret Voltaire, or Def Leppard,
0:23:12 > 0:23:15or Pulp, Clock DVA and the Human League, yeah.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17It was very inspiring.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19But it's great, when you first start out, to have a lot of bands
0:23:19 > 0:23:21to compete against, isn't it?
0:23:21 > 0:23:24- I think that's a big part of making music.- Yeah.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26- Very inspiring.- Now, will you be out in touring shows?
0:23:26 > 0:23:29- Can we see this being performed? - Yeah.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31Playing festivals through summer,

0:43:55 > 0:43:56Well, for one thing...
0:43:56 > 0:43:59I mean, I had that year, or slightly more than a year,
0:43:59 > 0:44:02thinking I was going to die.
0:44:02 > 0:44:06And it's a strange kind of way,
0:44:06 > 0:44:08it gives you a different way of looking at things,
0:44:08 > 0:44:12when you think the future is a universal blank.
0:44:12 > 0:44:17And now it's fading from me like a dream, you know.
0:44:17 > 0:44:19I'm back in the world.
0:44:19 > 0:44:22I was maybe trying to capture it.
0:44:22 > 0:44:25Did you enjoy writing the book? Looking back over everything?
0:44:25 > 0:44:28Yes, I started doing it, I got into it,
0:44:28 > 0:44:31I thought, this is really good, I'm a writer!
0:44:31 > 0:44:35And then I started getting up to the sad bit,
0:44:35 > 0:44:38where my wife died,
0:44:38 > 0:44:4012 years ago now...
0:44:40 > 0:44:42In fact, it's her birthday today.
0:44:42 > 0:44:46Aw! But we were together for 40 years,
0:44:46 > 0:44:48since we were teenagers.
0:44:48 > 0:44:51She died of cancer in 2004.
0:44:51 > 0:44:53And I got up to that point,
0:44:53 > 0:44:57and I didn't feel so good writing away any more.
0:44:57 > 0:45:00I'd open up the laptop and burst into tears.
0:45:00 > 0:45:05Anyway, I thought, "Pull myself together and carry on through it."
0:45:05 > 0:45:07The other thing, of course,
0:45:07 > 0:45:09is that you talk about Dr Feelgood.
0:45:09 > 0:45:11They were a very important band, I think, you know,
0:45:11 > 0:45:13now, historically, you look back...
0:45:13 > 0:45:16Some people say they were the first British blues band,
0:45:16 > 0:45:19but they were also one of the first punk bands before there was punk,
0:45:19 > 0:45:21you know, a band that couldn't care less.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24We hadn't had one of those for a long time, you know.
0:45:24 > 0:45:25When you look back,
0:45:25 > 0:45:27is it with fondness that you look back at Dr Feelgood?
0:45:27 > 0:45:31Well, I do. I always have done.
0:45:31 > 0:45:36You know, the band ended very acrimoniously and we split up,
0:45:36 > 0:45:41and I didn't want to dwell on that,
0:45:41 > 0:45:43I just walked away and I thought,
0:45:43 > 0:45:45I just want to remember the good times.
0:45:45 > 0:45:48And, in fact, after this argument in the newspapers,
0:45:48 > 0:45:53they were blaming me and saying it was all my fault and everything.
0:45:53 > 0:45:55And now, in this book, for the first time,
0:45:55 > 0:45:58I've written out a proper account of how we bust up
0:45:58 > 0:46:00and, believe me, they done me wrong!
0:46:02 > 0:46:05Never! Don't hold a grudge, nurture it!
0:46:05 > 0:46:07LAUGHTER
0:46:07 > 0:46:08We've got a bit of film footage.
0:46:08 > 0:46:11And, of course, you then formed the Solid Senders,
0:46:11 > 0:46:12- which I nearly joined! - You did, didn't you?
0:46:12 > 0:46:15Well, I auditioned, but then I never heard anything again!
0:46:15 > 0:46:16You came along on a motorbike!
0:46:16 > 0:46:19I did. That's right. And then people had just started gobbing -
0:46:19 > 0:46:21it was those magical days!
0:46:21 > 0:46:22Let's have a look.
0:46:27 > 0:46:29# Jet plane heading for the runway Swimming like a fish
0:46:29 > 0:46:31# Through the heat haze
0:46:31 > 0:46:33# It's really getting strange
0:46:33 > 0:46:35# The way the weather change
0:46:35 > 0:46:37# Caterpillar tractor is crawling up the snow
0:46:37 > 0:46:39# I wanna bottle up and go
0:46:39 > 0:46:42# Don't want to go out and get made
0:46:42 > 0:46:44# Talk to the squares from the jet set
0:46:44 > 0:46:46# They're try to learn their line
0:46:46 > 0:46:48# Two weeks behind the time
0:46:48 > 0:46:51# Standing round lookin' like I'm really in the know
0:46:51 > 0:46:53# I wanna bottle and go Ah!
0:47:07 > 0:47:10CHEERING
0:47:12 > 0:47:13That is great.
0:47:13 > 0:47:16Was it nice being a front man after all that time?
0:47:16 > 0:47:18Erm...
0:47:18 > 0:47:20I don't know. I liked both ways.
0:47:20 > 0:47:23When I worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads,
0:47:23 > 0:47:25it was kind of fabulous being a sideman,
0:47:25 > 0:47:29particularly with that great rhythm section.
0:47:29 > 0:47:30Letting Ian stand at the front
0:47:30 > 0:47:33and get all nervous and all that, you know...
0:47:33 > 0:47:35- I like it both ways.- Yeah.
0:47:35 > 0:47:37And you've also recently - or relatively recently -
0:47:37 > 0:47:40- you were in the Game Of Thrones. - Yes, I was.
0:47:40 > 0:47:44And were playing this sort of tongueless violent mute psychopath.
0:47:44 > 0:47:48Did that open up a desire to take on more acting?
0:47:48 > 0:47:51It was the first time I've ever done any acting.
0:47:51 > 0:47:55They... I got this call to go - would I go and audition?
0:47:55 > 0:47:57They told me it was for an American television series.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59I thought it was going to be
0:47:59 > 0:48:01something like Xena the Warrior Princess.
0:48:01 > 0:48:03I thought, yeah, I'd like to do that,
0:48:03 > 0:48:06maybe I'll get a leather jacket out of it or something.
0:48:06 > 0:48:09I got there and realised, no, this is much bigger!
0:48:09 > 0:48:11It was absolutely great,
0:48:11 > 0:48:13because my character's tongue was cut out
0:48:13 > 0:48:15and I didn't have to learn any lines!
0:48:15 > 0:48:16LAUGHTER
0:48:16 > 0:48:19I just had to stand round giving people dirty looks.
0:48:19 > 0:48:20I mean, I can do that!
0:48:22 > 0:48:23Do you fancy any more acting?
0:48:23 > 0:48:27If they can find some more tongueless parts for me, yeah!
0:48:27 > 0:48:29It's always good to specialise, I think.
0:48:29 > 0:48:31It's been great having you.
0:48:31 > 0:48:34You nearly died, I'm so pleased you've come back.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37LAUGHTER What's your...
0:48:37 > 0:48:39outlook for the future now?
0:48:39 > 0:48:43Well, I suppose I'm just glad to be...
0:48:43 > 0:48:46I mean, I can't take it in. You know, I'm here,
0:48:46 > 0:48:48I'm looking around, I'm conscious, I'm not...
0:48:48 > 0:48:50I should have been two years in my grave.
0:48:50 > 0:48:53So, pretty much everything is all right, isn't it?
0:48:53 > 0:48:55It's great. Exactly. I couldn't agree more!
0:48:55 > 0:48:57You're pleased to be here, we're pleased you're here,
0:48:57 > 0:48:59everything's worked out all right!
0:48:59 > 0:49:01Thank you for joining us. Wilko Johnson!
0:49:03 > 0:49:05The marvellous Wilko Johnson. And while we're on it -
0:49:05 > 0:49:07earlier on I was just saying goodbye to Martin
0:49:07 > 0:49:09and I didn't notice he was trying to take my hand
0:49:09 > 0:49:12and I walked off, and that just isn't on.
0:49:12 > 0:49:15Great to have you here. Thank you, sir. Martin Fry.

0:59:25 > 0:59:28# I picked it up slow

0:59:31 > 0:59:34# I didn't want the captain's role
0:59:34 > 0:59:36# But I'll steer us over highs and lows
0:59:38 > 0:59:41# It's communal
0:59:41 > 0:59:44# But for you it's individual
0:59:44 > 0:59:47# And that makes me hysterical
0:59:48 > 0:59:51# I'm never gonna let you go
0:59:51 > 0:59:55# My body's gone cold My body's gone cold

1:00:04 > 1:00:06# I'm just an animal
1:00:06 > 1:00:10# Can you realise
1:00:10 > 1:00:13# My head's a carnival?
1:00:13 > 1:00:15# All I wanna feel's a little chemical rush
1:00:15 > 1:00:19# All I really know is that it won't take long

1:00:46 > 1:00:47# It's visceral
1:00:47 > 1:00:49# It's visceral
1:00:49 > 1:00:52- # When I hurt you I can never show - Never show
1:00:52 > 1:00:54# This has become habitual

1:01:00 > 1:01:03# My body's gone cold My body's gone cold
1:01:03 > 1:01:06# My body's gone cold And I've lost control

1:01:24 > 1:01:27# All I really know is that it won't take long
1:01:27 > 1:01:32# I'll eat you alive
