0:17:40 > 0:17:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:17:47 > 0:17:49James Vincent McMorrow!
0:17:51 > 0:17:54With Rising Water, from We Move.
0:17:54 > 0:17:59Now, at the table here, welcoming for a nice chat, Tom Chaplin!
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Welcome to the show.
0:18:01 > 0:18:04Good to see you here. Lovely to be here.
0:18:04 > 0:18:07There's a bit of sparkly water, and some black fluid for me. Yes.
0:18:07 > 0:18:09Sharpen our senses. No expense spent.
0:18:09 > 0:18:12It's great to have you, because oft before when you've been on
0:18:12 > 0:18:15it's been with Keane, and here you are on your own. Yes.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17I mean, is it easy being on your own,
0:18:17 > 0:18:19is it enjoyable being on your own?
0:18:19 > 0:18:21It's very enjoyable.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24I've realised what a big task it is, actually.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26I think anyone who knows Keane will know
0:18:26 > 0:18:28that obviously I was the singer in Keane,
0:18:28 > 0:18:30and Tim, who played the piano, he was the songwriter.
0:18:30 > 0:18:35So, you know, writing a record, this is the first time I've done it,
0:18:35 > 0:18:38I've discovered it's quite an undertaking.
0:18:38 > 0:18:41With Keane, you wrote a little bit...? Or was it really not you?
0:18:41 > 0:18:44At the very beginning, in the early years of Keane,
0:18:44 > 0:18:46both Tim and I wrote songs.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49And then in the two or three years leading up to our first record,
0:18:49 > 0:18:52Hopes And Fears, suddenly all these songs, like... He started writing
0:18:52 > 0:18:55all these songs like Everybody's Changing and Somewhere Only We Know.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57And I thought, "Do you know what,
0:18:57 > 0:18:59"I'm not sure I can keep up with this, you know? It's just too good."
0:18:59 > 0:19:04And so I just... I sort of retreated really, and went to just singing.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06And what made you decide you wanted to do a record on your own?
0:19:06 > 0:19:09Well, you know, I'm a creative soul.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13And I just, you know, have had this sort of burning desire
0:19:13 > 0:19:16that's grown and grown and grown over the years, you know,
0:19:16 > 0:19:20and I just felt it was time to give it a shot.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23It's quite an emotional sort of record, isn't it, would you say?
0:19:23 > 0:19:25It's an incredibly personal record.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28You know, as you may remember, from about sort of ten years ago,
0:19:28 > 0:19:31I had my kind of first problems with drug addiction.
0:19:31 > 0:19:35And that was a problem that never went away for me,
0:19:35 > 0:19:38it kept resurfacing again and again over the years.
0:19:38 > 0:19:39And of course the thing is
0:19:39 > 0:19:42that each time comes back, it's worse.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44And 2014
0:19:44 > 0:19:49when I'd sort of decided I was going to start making this solo album,
0:19:49 > 0:19:50and the same year my daughter was born,
0:19:50 > 0:19:52you know, should have been a great year.
0:19:52 > 0:19:55But unfortunately my problems kind of resurfaced in a major way.
0:19:55 > 0:19:59And, you know, I ended up nearly killing myself, basically.
0:19:59 > 0:20:03And I got to a point where I thought, "If I carry on,
0:20:03 > 0:20:05"I will be dead or certainly will lose everything."
0:20:05 > 0:20:07But you're on the right track now, thank God.
0:20:07 > 0:20:09Well, yeah, and the record
0:20:09 > 0:20:11is the story of getting well from that position.
0:20:11 > 0:20:14Well, we've got a bit of footage. We're going to go down memory lane,
0:20:14 > 0:20:15and here is This Is The Last Time,
0:20:15 > 0:20:18when you were on the show a few years ago.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21# The last time
0:20:21 > 0:20:26# You fall on me for anything you like
0:20:26 > 0:20:28# Your one last line
0:20:28 > 0:20:33# You fall on me for anything you like
0:20:33 > 0:20:36# And years make everything all right
0:20:36 > 0:20:39# You fall on me for anything you like
0:20:39 > 0:20:45# And I No, I don't mind... #
0:20:47 > 0:20:48CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:20:48 > 0:20:50Aw...!
0:20:51 > 0:20:53And that's...
0:20:53 > 0:20:56That is a hard act to follow cos it's a great band, isn't it?
0:20:56 > 0:20:59Yes. But your new band sounds great. They're wonderful, yeah.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02You're going to be going on tour, doing lots of shows.
0:21:02 > 0:21:04Yes, we're going out this month in fact.
0:21:04 > 0:21:06Plenty of stuff basically for the next year,
0:21:06 > 0:21:07we're going to be on the road.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10Now, last week, Wiley was on. Right.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12And I was asking him what he did to relax.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15And his chief source of relaxation
0:21:15 > 0:21:17was eating fish and chips.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20Right. I don't know, is there something you like to do to relax?
0:21:20 > 0:21:22Not eating fish - I GO fishing. Oh, really?
0:21:22 > 0:21:26Yeah, I go on these week-long trips to France, with a bunch of mates
0:21:26 > 0:21:30and sit on the bank, and I just find it a very kind of relaxing pursuit.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33It's like nothing else I do.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35Do you catch much, or is it about the time?
0:21:35 > 0:21:37No, it's about the time, really. Yeah.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39I mean, you're trying to catch these specimen fish that are sort of
0:21:39 > 0:21:4250 lbs or 60 lbs, you can barely pick them up.
0:21:42 > 0:21:43But I don't have much luck.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45And do you scoff the fish that you eat?
0:21:45 > 0:21:48No. That would be bad form, I think. Would it? OK, just checking.
0:21:48 > 0:21:49It's just about catching specimens...
0:21:49 > 0:21:52I was thinking of putting you and Wiley together,
0:21:52 > 0:21:54you know, you could catch the fish and relax together.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56Sounds like a plan.

0:39:01 > 0:39:06# That would walk you to school hand-in-hand
0:39:07 > 0:39:11# He was hard work, leather and tan
0:39:13 > 0:39:17# And he spoke with a throatful of sand
0:39:18 > 0:39:22# Me, I'd hang onto every word
0:39:24 > 0:39:28# You never know what you might learn
0:39:28 > 0:39:33# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down

0:41:46 > 0:41:50# And he smiled and said softly, "Goodbye"
0:41:52 > 0:41:55# Me, I've got two of my own
0:41:57 > 0:42:02# And a love that is solid as stone
0:42:02 > 0:42:05# Like a stone
0:42:05 > 0:42:09# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down
0:42:10 > 0:42:14# Never put a blade in the ground

0:42:23 > 0:42:28# Don't let the good life pass you by. #
0:42:40 > 0:42:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:42:47 > 0:42:48Blackberry Smoke!
0:42:50 > 0:42:52The Good Life, from their album Like An Arrow.
0:42:52 > 0:42:57Now, at the piano, I meet, briefly, the wonderful Madeleine Peyroux!
0:42:58 > 0:43:01It's great to see you and have you back on the show
0:43:01 > 0:43:04after a short period of missing you.
0:43:04 > 0:43:08You've got this record out now, Secular Hymns, great record.
0:43:08 > 0:43:12Lots of great songs on it. Where did you record this record?
0:43:12 > 0:43:16Here in England, in a little church in Great Milton, Oxfordshire.
0:43:16 > 0:43:18Right. So recorded in a church,
0:43:18 > 0:43:20but is it next to a three-star Michelin restaurant?
0:43:20 > 0:43:21Oh, yeah.
0:43:21 > 0:43:23JOOLS LAUGHS Oh, yeah.
0:43:23 > 0:43:24Cos it's very important, that -
0:43:24 > 0:43:26musicians like nice food, don't they?
0:43:26 > 0:43:29So it's very nice to sort of put the two together. Yeah.
0:43:29 > 0:43:31Well, it actually worked the other way around,
0:43:31 > 0:43:33we were invited to play there because of the restaurant.
0:43:33 > 0:43:34Oh.
0:43:34 > 0:43:37Which I... Maybe that's why it was so cool.
0:43:37 > 0:43:40And you've always found great songs,
0:43:40 > 0:43:43and you've gone to the... to the song face
0:43:43 > 0:43:45and found early wonderful songs.
0:43:45 > 0:43:47Where did you find some of the ones for this one?
0:43:47 > 0:43:48Where did you look for them?
0:43:48 > 0:43:50Oh, gosh. You know, that's a good question.
0:43:50 > 0:43:52I just know that they're...
0:43:52 > 0:43:54When I found out that they were out there,
0:43:54 > 0:43:57it was important to try and get something.
0:43:57 > 0:43:58Like, I discovered Linton Kwesi Johnson,
0:43:58 > 0:44:01who's not really well known in the States,
0:44:01 > 0:44:03via a French guy.
0:44:03 > 0:44:07And then the Tom Waits tune, I've been trying to do for 20 years.
0:44:07 > 0:44:09So it's all mixed up. Yeah.
0:44:09 > 0:44:11And then there's really old things, there's a Lil Green song,
0:44:11 > 0:44:14some Lucky Millinder, and that Sister Rosetta Tharpe song,
0:44:14 > 0:44:17and all of that, and Bill Doggett, all of these really early things...
0:44:17 > 0:44:19Yes. ..from the sort of '30s and '40s.
0:44:19 > 0:44:21And it's all, but it all sounds like one...
0:44:21 > 0:44:24When did you first start to hear that old type of music?
0:44:24 > 0:44:26Well, my dad was born in New Orleans,
0:44:26 > 0:44:30and he used to sit around the house and play, you know,
0:44:30 > 0:44:33some early blues and jazz,
0:44:33 > 0:44:35and kind of a mixture with Texarkana, too,
0:44:35 > 0:44:37cos he used to live down there.
0:44:37 > 0:44:38So it all kind of...
0:44:38 > 0:44:41Kind of mixed together, and then there was a little Ravel
0:44:41 > 0:44:44every once in a while, and Tchaikovsky, or something like that.
0:44:44 > 0:44:45But it was all over the place,
0:44:45 > 0:44:49and he would listen to records over and over and over again.
0:44:49 > 0:44:52And he wasn't a musician, so go figure. Yeah.
0:44:52 > 0:44:54And is it true that early on,
0:44:54 > 0:44:57you played as a street musician in Paris? I did. How...
0:44:57 > 0:44:59What was... What was that about? What were you doing?
0:44:59 > 0:45:03Well, you know, I guess because American jazz isn't really as
0:45:03 > 0:45:07celebrated as it could be, that's my opinion, in the United States.
0:45:07 > 0:45:11So when I moved to Paris and I had heard this music at home,
0:45:11 > 0:45:14like Fats Waller songs, and then I saw Americans,
0:45:14 > 0:45:18and maybe some Europeans, also, playing them on the street.
0:45:18 > 0:45:20Probably because there's a tourist scene,
0:45:20 > 0:45:24but there was also already a tradition of just enjoying music,
0:45:24 > 0:45:26sort of like what you do,
0:45:26 > 0:45:28before you were doing it, probably. Yeah, exactly.
0:45:28 > 0:45:31Well, somebody was doing it before... Putting a show on. Yeah.
0:45:31 > 0:45:33Exactly. Putting a show on. Making...
0:45:33 > 0:45:34Connecting that music with people.
0:45:34 > 0:45:36And what are you going to play for us next?
0:45:36 > 0:45:39Well, we're going to do a song together, right?
0:45:39 > 0:45:42The Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune? Exactly. Shout Sister...
0:45:42 > 0:45:45Which is... Lucky Millinder, the big band did it, didn't they? Yeah.
0:45:45 > 0:45:47And it's really a great piece.
0:45:47 > 0:45:51And you know, how she sort of was one of the first...
0:45:51 > 0:45:57if not THE first woman to lead her own... Playing guitar and...
0:45:57 > 0:45:59Yeah. ..you know, make a name for herself.
0:45:59 > 0:46:01And now, it's finally going to be women's time soon, right?
0:46:01 > 0:46:03Yeah, that's right. At least, in America. She did...
0:46:03 > 0:46:06Yeah, she did invent all of that. Which, I mean, invent....
0:46:06 > 0:46:07She was one of the, she was playing rock and roll
0:46:07 > 0:46:09before it was all called rock and roll and...
0:46:09 > 0:46:12I'm telling you, women are behind it, sometimes. That's right.
0:46:12 > 0:46:14They're going like this, now.
0:46:14 > 0:46:17I think it means that they all agree with us very much. OK.
0:46:17 > 0:46:19Thank you for joining us. Madeleine Peyroux!
0:46:19 > 0:46:20All right.
0:46:20 > 0:46:22We'll be seeing Madeleine in a moment.
0:46:25 > 0:46:28Now, I walk gracefully
0:46:28 > 0:46:30and carefully up to this corner,
0:46:30 > 0:46:32and welcome James Vincent McMorrow.

0:50:57 > 0:51:00# And a darn good reason that a woman starts crying
0:51:00 > 0:51:04# There's a reason for a mole and a reason for a dimple
