:12:53. > :12:56.# So hear me out before you say the night is over

:13:34. > :13:37.# Woo, underneath the disco light, it's alright
:13:38. > :13:42.# Don't let this be our final song #.
:13:43. > :14:04.Thank you, MO, Final Song, from her album out next year. We will be
:14:05. > :14:08.hearing more songs on this show. Now we welcome from Los Angeles, their
:14:09. > :14:27.second time on the show, it is Warpaint!
:14:28. > :14:48.# That leads me, babe, to where I belong
:14:49. > :15:01.# Because of you, I know where I belong

:15:51. > :15:53.# You got the moves, you got the moves
:15:54. > :16:01.# You got the moves, you got the moves
:16:02. > :18:47.Thank you, Warpaint. That's from their album. Now, I'm going to be
:18:48. > :18:51.discussing something in the corner with an incredibly talented woman
:18:52. > :18:58.who we are so pleased to have back in the studio, Emeli Sande. Really
:18:59. > :19:02.nice to see you back here. I would like to congratulate you on a
:19:03. > :19:07.marvellous new record. It sounds wonderful. It must have been quite a
:19:08. > :19:12.lot of stress. Because your last record, which was your first,
:19:13. > :19:16.really, was such a tremendous success, not just here, but
:19:17. > :19:20.everywhere, people loved you all over the world. Every country was
:19:21. > :19:25.mad for you. Was there a lot of pressure trying to follow that up?
:19:26. > :19:32.Initially I tried not to think about it but then I found it started to
:19:33. > :19:37.interfere with making music. I saw naughty boy, a talented man, I will
:19:38. > :19:41.barge in on him later. We approached the first album with no expectation,
:19:42. > :19:46.just the love of music so I tried to get into that head frame and I hope
:19:47. > :19:52.we achieved that. Long Live The Angels. What inspired the title?
:19:53. > :19:56.From 2012 until now, the world has changed so much and I feel that
:19:57. > :20:02.Angels needing courage in. I feel I really choose my side and who I want
:20:03. > :20:04.to support. Long Live The Angels is for all the survivors out there and
:20:05. > :20:11.all the people doing great things in the world. Was there a particular
:20:12. > :20:14.moment for you when you're enormous global success, was there a minute
:20:15. > :20:21.when it suddenly became apparent to you that you were a success? Yes. I
:20:22. > :20:25.performed at the White House and at that moment I thought, wow, this has
:20:26. > :20:30.really taken me beyond any dream or expectation I had. When I was
:20:31. > :20:34.performing for the Obamas, I thought, this is a pinch me moment.
:20:35. > :20:39.When I look back on that day and that photo, I can't believe it
:20:40. > :20:43.happened to me. That is great. You are a great fan of a lot of old
:20:44. > :20:50.music as well as new music. Nina Simone is a person you like. We did
:20:51. > :20:56.one of her songs together years ago. Is she still an influence on you?
:20:57. > :21:00.Absolutely. As I grow older, I realise her depth more and more. As
:21:01. > :21:04.a musician, she took it to places a lot of people are afraid to take it.
:21:05. > :21:10.She is still an influence, and her bravery in music was the biggest
:21:11. > :21:15.thing that inspired me. She is great, a unique sounding person. The
:21:16. > :21:20.next song you are going to be doing for us, tell us what inspired that
:21:21. > :21:25.song? Shakes was one of the first songs I wrote for the album. It
:21:26. > :21:32.really set the bar. I wanted to take the truth of the music. I wrote that
:21:33. > :21:36.song with naughty boy. It isn't raw emotion and describes the depths of
:21:37. > :21:40.life and how deep you can take love, and sometimes it is ugly but it is
:21:41. > :21:49.always real. I remember in the studio session, Naughty Boy said,
:21:50. > :21:54.you can do it better. We did one take of the song and I think we
:21:55. > :22:00.captured the realness. He kept -- he pushed me. He is a great producer.
:22:01. > :22:04.He is always pushing you further. He has not laid-back, constantly
:22:05. > :22:08.pushing. He is probably one of the few people that gets me very angry
:22:09. > :22:13.but I think it works. I think it works in the studio and it gets to
:22:14. > :22:18.the depths of what I really want to save. I will challenge him to find
:22:19. > :22:24.out what he does to get you angry. Emeli Sande. How marvellous to see
:22:25. > :22:28.the huge success patch in our ears. We go from one distinctive artist to
:22:29. > :22:35.another and we welcome from New York, Regina Spektor.
:22:36. > :23:52.# Why you searched, but never found her
:23:53. > :29:58.# But you're just as smart as you're blind
:29:59. > :30:50.Wilco, Cry All Day. Wonderful. Before that, we enjoyed Regina
:30:51. > :30:57.Spektor at the piano. Now a dazzling artist who recently won a
:30:58. > :31:00.prestigious award. She is now with us, we welcome MO.
:31:01. > :31:09.# I miss... All yours
:31:10. > :31:12.# Have no cares in the world, have no fears, have no money, ah
:31:13. > :31:16.# Live the life like we're rich, super rich, and the honey, ah
:31:17. > :31:20.# What we had, was it good, I will always remember, ah
:31:21. > :31:26.# And now we're changing direction, I'll never forget ya
:31:27. > :32:10.# If you know me then I'm here if you want it, ah
:32:11. > :32:14.# Got my phone when you're low Got the pain in your stomach, ah
:32:15. > :32:18.# Cos what we had, was it good? I will always remember, ah
:32:19. > :32:22.# And now we're changing direction I'll never forget ya
:32:23. > :33:10.# No, I don't know what I really wanna nowhere
:33:11. > :33:14.# Like anyone knew real stuff that I'm gonna ey, ey, gonna ey, ey
:33:15. > :33:18.# Let my hair blow wild like it was summer, yeah, yeah
:33:19. > :33:21.# It's gonna be all right, be all right
:33:22. > :37:45.The wonderful Emeli Sande, Shakes. So now, at the table over here, I'm
:37:46. > :37:51.going to be talking to another incredibly talented woman. We
:37:52. > :37:58.welcome Anoushka Shankar. Welcome. Very good to see you. You've got
:37:59. > :38:03.Naughty Boy behind you, your producer, so watch out. -- a
:38:04. > :38:09.producer. It's great to have you on the show at last. Your sound is
:38:10. > :38:17.unique. Thank you. When did you first learn the sitar? I started
:38:18. > :38:21.learning when I was seven or eight from my father, Ravi Shankar. Even
:38:22. > :38:25.before that, I was travelling around. He was on tour and I grew up
:38:26. > :38:32.around the news it. It was in my atmosphere. ! He was one of the
:38:33. > :38:37.first people, the person, that introduced Indian classical music,
:38:38. > :38:43.all of that music to a western ear, a mainstream western ear. Is work
:38:44. > :38:48.with George Harrison, the Beatles, all of those things. Were you aware
:38:49. > :38:52.of that when you were growing up? You couldn't not be. All of those
:38:53. > :38:56.people were in our lives. You could see how people saw him. A part of
:38:57. > :39:01.growing up around him was knowing that. But it was music I loved and
:39:02. > :39:08.wanted to play. All of that is separate and outside. From him, one
:39:09. > :39:12.of the things he did that was great was mashing lots of different sorts
:39:13. > :39:18.of music up. There were not any rules. Have you learned that from
:39:19. > :39:23.him? In a way. The older he got, he was a classical musician as well.
:39:24. > :39:27.I've seen this example, that being a classical musician didn't have to be
:39:28. > :39:30.separate from innovative and creative. A lot of people at that
:39:31. > :39:36.time thought it had to be one or the other. He started that in our music
:39:37. > :39:39.world. He was the one to show that you could be creative, break
:39:40. > :39:43.boundaries, connect with other cultures and be a classical
:39:44. > :39:48.musician. We've got a clip of you with your father at the symphony
:39:49. > :39:54.hall in Birmingham in 1997. A happy memory? I was 15, so don't blame the
:39:55. > :40:43.outfit on my current tastes! Symphony hall in Birmingham. Can you
:40:44. > :40:47.remember that evening? Not really. I started playing with him when I was
:40:48. > :40:50.13 and I was on the road from then until when he passed away if you
:40:51. > :40:58.years ago. I was also touring separately. We did hundreds of
:40:59. > :41:03.shows. Your new record has lots of contributions from different and
:41:04. > :41:11.interesting people. We've got some amazing guest artists. MIA is there,
:41:12. > :41:16.Vanessa Redgrave as a spoken word bit on one song. Another wonderful
:41:17. > :41:21.contributor is playing with me tonight, a co-writer on lots of
:41:22. > :41:28.stuff. He plays the Hang. Music from all over the world. What are you
:41:29. > :41:34.going to play for us? We are doing a portion of a 13 minute song old
:41:35. > :41:38.Crossing The Rubicon. The Rubicon is the river that used to surround
:41:39. > :41:42.Rome. If you wanted to invade, you had to cross the river. So it is, if
:41:43. > :41:49.you have crossed, there is no going back. We will be discussing that
:41:50. > :41:54.with Naughty Boy in a moment. The fantastic Anoushka Shankar! We will
:41:55. > :42:02.be hearing from her in a moment. Seamlessly, while I was chatting in
:42:03. > :42:03.there, this has been placed there. So now we go over and welcome
:42:04. > :42:42.Warpaint. # You always seem to make my
:42:43. > :42:48.heart stop and # I can tell that there's
:42:49. > :42:56.something in your eyes # I want you now
:42:57. > :43:05.I want you all over me # Can't you tell me
:43:06. > :43:10.all your secrets? # Do you remember me
:43:11. > :44:00.the same way I do you? # Can't you tell me
:44:01. > :44:11.all your secrets? # You're good, you're
:44:12. > :45:35.good, you're good # You're good,
:45:36. > :50:39.you're good, you're good Be remarkably talented Anoushka
:50:40. > :50:46.Shankar, Crossing The Rubicon. Before that, we enjoyed Warpaint.
:50:47. > :50:54.Amazing, the way she plays. I will be passed by somebody over here.
:50:55. > :50:59.Naughty boy, great to have you. Who are you enjoying? Earlier, you said
:51:00. > :51:04.something about vibrations. Everyone in the room, but clearly, Anoushka,
:51:05. > :51:12.Regina and Emeli, I feel I am in heaven. A lot of great female
:51:13. > :51:23.vibrations. Everyone responds differently, and thank you for
:51:24. > :51:27.Shakes. I make Emeli angry sometimes but that song in particular, for me,
:51:28. > :51:31.what it represents is loving someone more than they deserve and still
:51:32. > :51:37.feeling that you are not loving them enough. We have all been there. We
:51:38. > :51:41.have been there and back! Very good to have you here, one of the great
:51:42. > :51:47.producers and writers of our day. Thanks so much. And now we welcome
:51:48. > :51:55.back the wonderful sound of Wilco. # Where you gonna go
:51:56. > :51:58.in your winter coat? # I wonder what you're hiding
:51:59. > :52:00.cos it's not too cold # Facing the blast
:52:01. > :52:35.and the moon and the math # But you still never know
:52:36. > :52:49.where your soul is attached # Now where you gonna go
:52:50. > :53:37.like a cobra coiled? # Sweating in a sweater,
:53:38. > :53:41.you got too much style # Standing strong as
:53:42. > :58:16.the waves roll over Lean On.
:58:17. > :58:20.For that we enjoyed Wilco. And now, let's enjoy Emeli Sande.
:58:21. > :58:34.# We hold the future in the palm of our hands
:58:35. > :59:16.# I'm talking 'bout the forever, baby
:59:17. > :59:37.# And we've run out of all the silver and gold
:59:38. > :59:42.# Will you still wanna be my someone to hold?
:59:43. > :59:46.# See, I would you, but you already know
:59:47. > :00:27.# It's bringing in my heart like thunder
:00:28. > :00:45.# I'll be there through the lo-lo-lo-lows
:00:46. > :01:52.Thank you, Emeli Sande. You can see more on our website. We will be back
:01:53. > :01:56.on Tuesday at 10pm. Can we get a groove going from over there,
:01:57. > :02:00.please? We have had such a lovely time with all the people this
:02:01. > :02:05.evening. Don't forget to put your clocks and watches back. Have you
:02:06. > :02:13.had fun being with us this evening? Well, in that case, let's thank our
:02:14. > :02:33.guests. Emeli Sande. Wilco. Anoushka Shankar. Naughty boy over there.
:02:34. > :02:37.Regina Spektor. Warpaint. MO. And Emeli Sande.
