:47:21. > :47:25.table laid with drinks and food, we welcome David Roderick.
:47:26. > :47:29.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. And David Roderick, I have been listening to
:47:30. > :47:35.you for years because you're one of the first broadcasters who has
:47:36. > :47:40.championed and been a great lover of Jamaican music. When did you first
:47:41. > :47:46.fall in love with it? I fell in love with it in the 1960s at the age of
:47:47. > :47:51.16, I knew I was completely hooked. It was the summer of dump. It was
:47:52. > :47:56.just amazing. It was this scarlet fever that came in from Jamaica. It
:47:57. > :48:00.was the beat everyone was dancing to. We were like thousands of other
:48:01. > :48:06.people and I have been hooked ever since. I have been through the
:48:07. > :48:11.changes, roots and culture music and I have stayed with it because I have
:48:12. > :48:18.always loved it. It is one of my most favourite music styles. It is
:48:19. > :48:23.the elements, it is one of the best things. Where does the reggae music
:48:24. > :48:28.comes from? What are the elements? For me it is one of the most
:48:29. > :48:30.passionate music forms. It speaks out for impoverished people and
:48:31. > :48:36.speaks out against injustice and that is why it is revered around the
:48:37. > :48:42.world. Then you have the great love songs, the beautiful harmonies, the
:48:43. > :48:47.bands, like the whalers, we could go on. We have been talking about 50
:48:48. > :48:51.years of music, rolling back from the early 60s. In the book, you
:48:52. > :49:02.cover the history of that and your history. We have got a little bit of
:49:03. > :49:11.footage here of Burning Spear. I am a big fan of them. I remember buying
:49:12. > :49:15.the first album. It cost ?5. It was a Jamaican import and I played it in
:49:16. > :49:20.my bedsit and they knew every note of it and then in 1979 when I got a
:49:21. > :49:24.job on BBC Radio London I got the chance to go to Jamaica and my first
:49:25. > :49:30.weekend, I took a chance, there was no way of communicating, I knew that
:49:31. > :49:32.he lived in Saint Ann 's Bay and had built a community centre and I went
:49:33. > :49:45.up there and I hoped and prayed and on the Saturday morning,
:49:46. > :49:48.hanging around and waiting, he appeared. I got to interview Burning
:49:49. > :49:50.Spear. Excellent. # So do you remember the days of
:49:51. > :50:27.slavery? # So do you remember the days of
:50:28. > :50:36.slavery? APPLAUSE. Yes, Burning Spear. It is
:50:37. > :50:41.a Labour of love, this book. It is your life and the history of reggae
:50:42. > :50:46.music. What ultimately do you think it is that is special about reggae
:50:47. > :50:53.music? It touches your soul. It is as simple as that. For me, it has
:50:54. > :50:59.always touched my soul, it is passionate, it is beautifully made.
:51:00. > :51:09.It is a music to be revered. Thank you very much for joining us. His
:51:10. > :51:13.book is now out. Now, you heard her beautiful voice and one of her
:51:14. > :51:15.beautiful songs earlier, now let's hear and enjoy some more of Courtney
:51:16. > :51:32.Marie Andrews. # I just pulled
:51:33. > :51:45.into town an hour ago # I'm just waiting
:51:46. > :52:00.for the bar to open # I've been
:52:01. > :52:49.driving till I get tired # There is no telling
:52:50. > :53:04.which way this road bends # Hope you finally settle
:53:05. > :53:23.down in Washington #. # Coven up, let's be it,
:53:24. > :55:31.do it, celebrate it. # Make it burn, let's be it,
:55:32. > :55:52.do it, celebrate it. # Come on up, let's be it,
:55:53. > :56:43.do it, celebrate it. # Mirror, mirror,
:56:44. > :57:55.build the fire high. # Mirror, mirror, be
:57:56. > :58:44.the wild, the wild fire. The exquisitely talented Goldfrapp.
:58:45. > :58:53.Systemagic. Before that we enjoyed Courtney Marie Andries. And now
:58:54. > :59:07.let's round off this delightful evening and event with Kasabian.
:59:08. > :59:17.# You know my name, you know my name.
:59:18. > :59:23.# You are losing the plot. # It took you a lifetime to get
:59:24. > :59:29.where you got. If I had my way I would be king for
:59:30. > :59:38.the day. # All the while I am sorry, I am
:59:39. > :59:50.sorry it is by too late. # I heard it all before.
:59:51. > :59:52.# I don't have the time to listen to this.
:59:53. > :59:58.# I don't know what the point you have missed.
:59:59. > :00:12.Look what you have got. I don't care what they say.
:00:13. > :00:20.# We can demand, look into the world, look into the future.
:00:21. > :00:30.# Into the light, into the light. # Try tell your joke over and over.
:00:31. > :00:39.# The higher the mountain, the higher the climb.
:00:40. > :00:47.# Look what you've got. I don't care what they say.
:00:48. > :01:01.# Beat Ken for the day. # Became for the day.
:01:02. > :01:26.-- beat King for the day. # Into the light, into the light.
:01:27. > :01:40.# Free from love, free from life, free from you.
:01:41. > :01:49.# Free from evil. # I'm rising up, I'm rising up.
