0:19:30 > 0:19:32Thank you, Pumarosa.
0:19:32 > 0:19:36The song, Honey, from their new album Bewitched.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39Now I am delighted to welcome at the table,
0:19:39 > 0:19:41a great legend of music, art, film, the lot.
0:19:41 > 0:19:44It is a thrill, I am delighted to welcome
0:19:44 > 0:19:45to the studio, Jane Birkin.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
0:19:47 > 0:19:48Welcome to the show.
0:19:48 > 0:19:52It is so nice to have you here.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56And great to have you here and you have made this fantastic
0:19:56 > 0:19:58record, it is a lovely sounding record, orchestral record
0:19:58 > 0:20:01of Serge Gainsbourg music.
0:20:01 > 0:20:05It's music you made with Serge Gainsbourg, but orchestrated.
0:20:05 > 0:20:07But I think we should start, for some of the British
0:20:07 > 0:20:10viewers who are not sure, because he is one of the greatest
0:20:10 > 0:20:13legends of French music, how would you describe him to people
0:20:13 > 0:20:15who are not familiar with his work?
0:20:15 > 0:20:17Oh, he is probably the greatest French writer since
0:20:17 > 0:20:20Baudelaire, Apollinaire.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22I think people recognise him as being one of
0:20:22 > 0:20:25France's greatest poets.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29He was also a wonderful composer, but he used a lot of classical music
0:20:29 > 0:20:32which is why I did this with the Philharmonic.
0:20:32 > 0:20:38Because of him being inspired by Brahms, Chopin...
0:20:38 > 0:20:42He was also one of the funniest men in the world.
0:20:42 > 0:20:43Yes.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46So, you could have someone who was at the same time a clown,
0:20:46 > 0:20:51at the same time a poet, at the same time a composer,
0:20:51 > 0:20:54and of great sadness as well.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56Then you would have him.
0:20:56 > 0:20:57Yes.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59He was a great artist.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02This record is your orchestral recording of some of
0:21:02 > 0:21:05the things you had and some of his music, orchestrated.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07I noticed, Je T'aime, which was a huge hit
0:21:07 > 0:21:10here, you did not think of redoing that one.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Well, no, because he is not there, so I wouldn't have
0:21:13 > 0:21:14anyone to sing it with.
0:21:14 > 0:21:15I see.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17There is an orchestral version, which is absolutely sublime,
0:21:17 > 0:21:21which is during the concert, but, in fact, if this is a success
0:21:21 > 0:21:27I want to take the orchestral bit, which is about six minutes,
0:21:27 > 0:21:30because it is so beautiful, especially Je T'aime...
0:21:30 > 0:21:34Moi Non Plus, but if not, a lot of them were ones
0:21:34 > 0:21:38that he wrote for me but we broke up.
0:21:38 > 0:21:40Because he wrote for me from when I was 20 years old,
0:21:40 > 0:21:45until he died and so I must have been about 45.
0:21:45 > 0:21:46You were his main muse, really?
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Yes.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51We've got a little bit of footage of the making of the album
0:21:51 > 0:21:53and the lovely sound of you with the orchestra.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55Let's have a little listen to that.
0:21:55 > 0:21:56Let's have a look here.
0:22:24 > 0:22:26That is lovely sounding, really lovely.
0:22:26 > 0:22:27Very romantic sounding.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30Very romantic and there is a wonderful...
0:22:30 > 0:22:35I went to Japan after the tsunami to sing concerts for the morale
0:22:35 > 0:22:42really and I met this pianist, Nobuyuki Najakima, and I asked him
0:22:42 > 0:22:46to do all the orchestrations, which is why you do not get fed up
0:22:46 > 0:22:49during the hour and half of me singing it, because he did it
0:22:49 > 0:22:52in such a way that it is like film music.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54Very, very like film music.
0:22:54 > 0:22:55The orchestration is beautiful.
0:22:55 > 0:22:58If it was just you and a piano, I wouldn't get fed up,
0:22:58 > 0:23:01but something I was going to say is you got absorbed
0:23:01 > 0:23:05into the sort of haute cuisine of French culture,
0:23:05 > 0:23:09music, film, fashion, all of that and they're famously brilliant,
0:23:09 > 0:23:11but not particularly...
0:23:11 > 0:23:15They do not take in new people very often, especially
0:23:15 > 0:23:16if they are not French.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19Why was it that they took to you so much, do you think?
0:23:19 > 0:23:21I was just lucky because I got there first.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24I mean, I must have turned up there at around 1968,
0:23:24 > 0:23:28when everything actually was English, fashion-wise.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31There was Jean Shrimpton, there was the Beatles,
0:23:31 > 0:23:35the Rolling Stones, photography, everything, it was a renaissance
0:23:35 > 0:23:41in England and that is when I went to France to see if I would get this
0:23:41 > 0:23:45part in a movie with Serge and I got it and then I did another film
0:23:45 > 0:23:49with Romy Schneider and Alain Delon and suddenly I was off.
0:23:49 > 0:23:54What I was was not anything that great, I just had a very short skirt
0:23:54 > 0:23:56and had a terrible accent, I had teeth with a gap
0:23:56 > 0:23:58in them and I don't know...
0:23:58 > 0:23:59But they loved you.
0:23:59 > 0:24:00They took to you.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03I was a bit funny.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06The thing is, the French films and the culture is so fantastic,
0:24:06 > 0:24:09it is unique, it is not like anything else.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11Serge Gainsbourg seems to encapsulate all of that.
0:24:11 > 0:24:12You're right, you're right.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14He does.
0:24:14 > 0:24:18He was Russian Jewish, so he has also got that
0:24:18 > 0:24:20thing of melancholy, that thing of being particularly
0:24:20 > 0:24:25brilliant in Slav.
0:24:25 > 0:24:30It is not only French, it is that wonderful mixture.
0:24:30 > 0:24:34Now, there are live shows coming up, you're at the Barbican on the 26th,
0:24:34 > 0:24:36which I am hoping to come and see and it is fantastic
0:24:36 > 0:24:38to have you here tonight.
0:24:38 > 0:24:40Thank you for joining us, Jane Birkin!
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Thank you.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44APPLAUSE.
0:24:49 > 0:24:51So, we must now move over into this corner
0:24:51 > 0:24:54here and we welcome, from New Zealand, Aldous Harding!
0:25:15 > 0:25:21# Let me put the water in the bowl for your wounds, babe
0:25:22 > 0:25:27# Let me fill you up with the fingers of love
0:25:27 > 0:25:29# You can't lose, babe
0:25:31 > 0:25:35# When you watch me play, does it feel bad, darling
0:25:35 > 0:25:38# When they choose me
0:25:41 > 0:25:46# Say again, this place
0:25:48 > 0:25:54# Say again, this place
0:25:56 > 0:26:02# I broke my neck dancing to the edge of the world, babe
0:26:07 > 0:26:10# My mouth is wet, don't you forget it
0:26:10 > 0:26:12# Don't you lose me
0:26:14 > 0:26:20# Here is your princess and here is your horizon
0:26:22 > 0:26:28# Here is your princess and here is your horizon
0:26:38 > 0:26:41# I've gotta scratch it down,
0:26:41 > 0:26:44# I never could amount, that's it, babe
0:26:46 > 0:26:53# And now the sugar's run out and I don't know what to say
0:26:57 > 0:27:02# Say again, this place
0:27:04 > 0:27:10# Say again, this place

0:39:54 > 0:39:57Now I'm so pleased to welcome to the table here,
0:39:57 > 0:40:01the incredibly talented, the brilliant, Sheryl Crow.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04Sheryl, it is great to have you here in this room.
0:40:04 > 0:40:05Thank you.
0:40:05 > 0:40:10Now, wonderful new record you've got out, Be Myself.
0:40:10 > 0:40:12Is that how you are feeling at the moment?
0:40:12 > 0:40:13Being yourself?
0:40:13 > 0:40:14It is, yeah.
0:40:14 > 0:40:15Yes.
0:40:15 > 0:40:17I love being myself right now.
0:40:17 > 0:40:20What sort of thing inspires you now then?
0:40:20 > 0:40:23This record was really the result of what was going on in America,
0:40:23 > 0:40:26which is what is still going on in America.
0:40:26 > 0:40:31I started to feel like I did not recognise my country and I felt
0:40:31 > 0:40:34like, the dialogue had become sort of vitriolic and a lot of it
0:40:34 > 0:40:38influenced the way this record sounds and feels.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40Then also, just the presence of technology and raising two
0:40:40 > 0:40:42little boys, and it's a whole different world...
0:40:42 > 0:40:46Two little boys are going to become people and trying to keep them
0:40:46 > 0:40:48from the fascination of everything that is coming at them
0:40:48 > 0:40:53through this thing, you know.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55Your record has got this great sort of boogie lilt to it,
0:40:55 > 0:40:59do you think that sort of thing gets better as it goes along?
0:40:59 > 0:41:01No machine can possibly capture it.
0:41:01 > 0:41:04I felt completely and totally liberated and I made the record
0:41:04 > 0:41:09during school hours, which, you know, in the old days,
0:41:09 > 0:41:12you stayed up all night and you drank and you recorded.
0:41:12 > 0:41:15It was completely different than anything I have done before
0:41:15 > 0:41:19and I felt completely liberated.
0:41:19 > 0:41:21There was so much to write about.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24Would you say that you have been in the studio and they have said,
0:41:24 > 0:41:26that was an amazing vocal, just one more take
0:41:26 > 0:41:28and you've got it.
0:41:28 > 0:41:31And you have said, I have to go and get my children now!
0:41:31 > 0:41:32I swear to God, yes.
0:41:32 > 0:41:35The whole thing about it was, we made the whole album in a month
0:41:35 > 0:41:39and the reason it went so fast was the way that Jeff Trott and I,
0:41:39 > 0:41:42old buddies, who I made a lot of the early stuff with,
0:41:42 > 0:41:45Jeff Trott, and I, he plays guitar, I played bass and we set up a mic
0:41:45 > 0:41:49and we would record as we went and it wound up being the record.
0:41:49 > 0:41:52It has got a fantastic feel to it, Gary Clark Junior is on there.
0:41:52 > 0:41:53Chad Blake.
0:41:53 > 0:41:54Yes.
0:41:54 > 0:41:56Flew in from Wales, came in, engineered,
0:41:56 > 0:41:58it was just, a total, love, joy project.
0:41:58 > 0:42:01Now then, to sort of rush back to the past, to Top of the Pops,
0:42:01 > 0:42:03which we have got some of here.
0:42:03 > 0:42:04Oh my.
0:42:04 > 0:42:07I think, when All I Wanna Do, which changed everything for you.
0:42:07 > 0:42:08It did.
0:42:08 > 0:42:09We've got some of that here.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12# The good people of the world are washing their cars.
0:42:12 > 0:42:13# On their lunch break.
0:42:13 > 0:42:15# Hosing and scrubbing as best they can.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17# In skirts and suits.
0:42:17 > 0:42:20# And they drive up in their shiny Datsuns and Buicks.
0:42:20 > 0:42:24# Back to the phone company, and record stores, too.
0:42:24 > 0:42:27# But they're nothing like Billy and me.
0:42:27 > 0:42:30# Cos all I wanna do is have some fun.
0:42:30 > 0:42:34# I've got a feeling, I'm not the only one.
0:42:34 > 0:42:38# All I wanna do is have some fun.
0:42:38 > 0:42:42# I got a feeling, I'm not the only one.
0:42:42 > 0:42:46# All I wanna do is have some fun.
0:42:46 > 0:42:54# Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard.
0:42:54 > 0:42:58Great.
0:42:58 > 0:43:00You have been doing lots of amazing things.
0:43:00 > 0:43:02Actually, your career is amazing, because you did backing vocals
0:43:02 > 0:43:04for all these people, like Stevie Wonder and
0:43:04 > 0:43:07Michael Jackson and then you get all the Grammys,
0:43:07 > 0:43:10Celine Dion is doing your songs, everybody, it is an amazing job.
0:43:10 > 0:43:14But this must have been a big step.
0:43:14 > 0:43:16That was a big one.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19Actually, that one song took us from South America to Singapore.
0:43:19 > 0:43:24We went all over the world and it changed my life, completely.
0:43:24 > 0:43:26And you know, really up until that point,
0:43:26 > 0:43:29I had been a schoolteacher and then a back-up singer and then
0:43:29 > 0:43:33I was doing commercials and I had a lot of real jobs and then the next
0:43:33 > 0:43:36thing you know, I was on the road and we have not stopped.
0:43:36 > 0:43:37It has been 24 years.
0:43:37 > 0:43:39Sounding better as it goes along.
0:43:39 > 0:43:41Are you going to be doing festivals here this summer?
0:43:41 > 0:43:42You must be doing the festivals.

0:43:46 > 0:43:49Yes, I would be the best person to see at a festival.
