0:00:59 > 0:01:03- I had to choose two - so I opted for the cello and piano.

0:01:03 > 0:01:09- I went to the Guildhall and studied - both the cello and piano.

0:01:09 > 0:01:14- How did you cope with - all the practising as a child?

0:01:25 > 0:01:28- Mami did her grade five - on the piano...

0:01:29 > 0:01:33- ..and Mam-gu played the organ - in chapel...

0:01:33 > 0:01:36- ..but Dad runs a bus company.

0:01:41 > 0:01:47- I started cello lessons in primary - school with a peripatetic teacher...

0:01:47 > 0:01:49- ..and it went from there.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51- They could see that I enjoyed it...

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- ..and they didn't have - to force me to practise.

0:02:01 > 0:02:06- It's 20 years since you came - to my studio as a school girl.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- I stopped having harp lessons - two years ago...

0:02:23 > 0:02:25- ..but I still play it a lot.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29- However, my first instruments - are the cello and piano.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35- I hope I never have to choose - as I want to study both at college.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38- It was lovely to see you there.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40- It was lovely to see you there.- - That was so funny.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- You looked very young there.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49- I think I was in the Sixth Form - at that time...

0:02:53 > 0:02:57- I won a scholarship for the cello - and the piano...

0:02:57 > 0:02:59- ..so I didn't have to choose!

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- I studied both - for the first three years...

0:03:05 > 0:03:08- ..and did my final recital - on the cello...

0:03:09 > 0:03:12- ..and advanced chamber music - on the piano.

0:03:12 > 0:03:17- I don't want to be a solo pianist - but to play in chamber groups.

0:03:18 > 0:03:23- What's the difference between - being a soloist and accompanist?

0:03:23 > 0:03:25- Are they different disciplines?

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Are they different disciplines?- - It's very lonely being a soloist.

0:03:28 > 0:03:33- It meant spending five or six hours - a day practising...

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- ..on your own in a room.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- It wasn't for me.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- I enjoy working with people...

0:03:41 > 0:03:45- ..which is why I chose to be - an accompanist on the piano.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09- After I left college, - most of my work was on the cello...

0:04:09 > 0:04:13- ..because there's more opportunities - for work.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17- Are there fewer cellists - than pianists?

0:04:17 > 0:04:23- No, because every orchestra - has eight to ten cellists.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26- You also have string quartets.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28- You also have string quartets.- - There's more opportunities.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- There's always a demand for cellists - as people do fall ill...

0:04:34 > 0:04:37- ..so it's just a case of working - with an orchestra.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42- A lot of people want string quartets - to play at their wedding...

0:04:42 > 0:04:46- ..and I've done a lot - of film sessions.
