:12:56. > :13:03.What a performance, thank you so much for that, Skepta. What a year
:13:04. > :13:10.for him. The crowd on their feet. No settling back down. Ready to move
:13:11. > :13:14.on, thank you, Skepta, and good luck with the wonderful Konnichiwa. Now,
:13:15. > :13:24.before we discover who else is vying for this your's Album of the Year
:13:25. > :13:29.let's reflect on the first 24 years of the mercury Price. It's kind of a
:13:30. > :13:32.history of three decades of British and Irish music. We thought it would
:13:33. > :13:40.be fun to do it alphabetically. Where shall we start? Over 25 years
:13:41. > :13:44.285 albums have graced the Mercury short list. And the letter A seemed
:13:45. > :13:58.advantageous. Alt-J, Antony and the Johnsons are
:13:59. > :14:02.amongst past winners. Let us go back to the Advent prize when achtung
:14:03. > :14:11.baby was one of the first nominees in 1992. All the luck was out for
:14:12. > :14:20.the Irish... The multi-million seller was beaten by primal scream's
:14:21. > :14:30.superb Aladdin Sane. Badly Drawn Boy or James Blake, or even twice
:14:31. > :14:36.nominated Guy Barker. We have gone with Britpop, which burns so
:14:37. > :14:41.brightly in the mid-19 90s Mercury land. Suede's electrifying debut
:14:42. > :14:46.stormed the charts and impress the judges but in 94 and 95, the boys
:14:47. > :14:56.and girls were nominated but missed out. But Britpop bounced back in 96
:14:57. > :15:09.when Pulp took the accolade. We are very pleased. C is all about the
:15:10. > :15:12.cash... No contactless cards here. With the traditional ?20,000 prize
:15:13. > :15:19.rising since inflation, this year the winner will pocket nearly 40
:15:20. > :15:23.grand. Is that a cheque? To celebrate the work of new artists
:15:24. > :15:28.and over the last quarter of the century, the Mercury Prize has been
:15:29. > :15:37.a debutante delight, 16 of the 23 different prizewinners have won with
:15:38. > :15:45.their debut record. E is for... Elegant Slumming was the surprise
:15:46. > :15:53.winner ahead of her. It is like a fantastic disco. And E is also for
:15:54. > :15:57.Elbow. They were equally elated as they bagged the 2008 prize. This is
:15:58. > :16:03.literally the best thing that has happened to us. In 2004, Fortune
:16:04. > :16:11.favoured the fantastic Franz Ferdinand. Although F is also for
:16:12. > :16:16.Simon Frith, the journalist and actual professor of pop has had the
:16:17. > :16:20.unenviable task of chairing those on really Mercury judges from the
:16:21. > :16:26.outset. Any stressful moments? Every year! In 2001, those cheeky cartoon
:16:27. > :16:35.apes the guerrillas... Were not happy. As they became the first act
:16:36. > :16:49.to turn down the Mercury nomination. At least Gomez were more gracious in
:16:50. > :16:54.1998. It is ridiculous to win here. What to Pulp, Dizzee Rascal, Elbow,
:16:55. > :17:03.Bat for Lashes and Coldplay have in common? Thank you very much! A
:17:04. > :17:10.hat-trick of nominations. Of the 83-time nominees, two of them are in
:17:11. > :17:16.contention this year. -- eight, three time. The first helping the
:17:17. > :17:23.alphabetical guide to the Mercury Prize. No spoilers but more coming
:17:24. > :17:26.up. Back to the task in hand, another new twist for the prize this
:17:27. > :17:31.year was to allow the public to choose one of the six finalists from
:17:32. > :17:37.the short list of 12 and I can reveal the winner of the public vote
:17:38. > :17:41.and another contender for this year's Mercury Prize, which we will
:17:42. > :17:45.discover in 40 minutes or so... Whatever happens, this band will
:17:46. > :17:50.walk away with the gong for the longest album title of the year! I
:17:51. > :17:55.Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It.
:17:56. > :17:58.This is their second number one album, performing love me, it is The

:22:00. > :22:04.And we will need to check that the next performance is long enough for
:22:05. > :22:10.me to get my dustpan and brush out! The clearing up is taken care of!
:22:11. > :22:15.Congratulations to The 1975! APPLAUSE

:22:29. > :22:36.finalists and while you ponder what Z might be for, let us pick up where
:22:37. > :22:45.we left off. Welcome back to the ages eight, I is for I Am a Bird
:22:46. > :22:49.Now, Antony and the Johnsons flew away with the award in 2005 and
:22:50. > :22:53.Anthony had a unique take on the prize. It is a contest between
:22:54. > :23:04.Orange and spaceships and a potted plant and a spoon! J is for... Jazz!
:23:05. > :23:10.Jazz has been represented in all but six of the 25 short lists. But is
:23:11. > :23:21.jazz jinxed? The judges are yet to give a jazz album the gong. K could
:23:22. > :23:25.be for Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs or KT Tunstall... But if we're talking
:23:26. > :23:36.about media moments, it can only stand for... Lauren Laverne, who

:26:15. > :26:18.are the most short listed band in Mercury Prize history. They have
:26:19. > :26:24.never won the prize so will they take gold at the fifth attempt? We
:26:25. > :26:30.will find out tonight. We will find out tonight. Now it is time to find
:26:31. > :26:35.out who will be the next of the six finalists. We have had three of them
:26:36. > :26:40.so three more yet to come. This year the world lost an irreplaceable

:26:44. > :26:48.edge of pop music throughout his extraordinary career, which spanned
:26:49. > :26:52.almost half a century. David Bowie was an endlessly surprising and
:26:53. > :26:57.inventive artist and his parting gift was no exception. Released two

:45:33. > :45:41.young guns, just on the youngest ever nominee at 17. Dizzee Rascal is
:45:42. > :45:47.the youngest winner, Jake Bugg was 19,. Silk was also. Adele was a
:45:48. > :45:58.relative bedroom by the time she gets her first nomination. Finally,
:45:59. > :46:02.z is for zeitgeist, each year the short list represents the sound of
:46:03. > :46:06.the year in British and Irish music with some amazing records on the
:46:07. > :46:16.list, we will soon find out which will be record of the year in this
:46:17. > :46:20.25th year of the prize. What a mercurial history the Mercury Prize
:46:21. > :46:24.has had, no more so than the remarkable events of 2015 when the
:46:25. > :46:29.winner, a you face whose victory that some people speechless,
:46:30. > :46:34.including himself, invited all of his fellow short listed artists on
:46:35. > :46:39.stage to join him in memory of the victims of the Bataclan terrorist
:46:40. > :46:43.attack. While we wait with bated breath for tonight's winner to be
:46:44. > :46:48.revealed, we have a very special performance that celebrates last's
:46:49. > :46:51.winner, back with a view song, please welcome the winner of the
:46:52. > :47:08.2015 Mercury Prize, Benjamin Clementina.
:47:09. > :47:26.-- Clementine. # Somewhere beyond the iron fence.
:47:27. > :47:47.# A man must know glimpse... They say you must become the animal. #
:47:48. > :48:07.Are good, good animal, so we go to war. # I do agree. # That men are
:48:08. > :48:12.purely evil. # But whereas some are born with a spoon in their mouth,
:48:13. > :48:27.others are nurtured with a bullet in your hands. Use they say you must
:48:28. > :48:32.become an animal for the animal... The good, good animal. # And so, we
:48:33. > :48:46.go to war. # Taste fruits of fear
:48:47. > :49:17.in the depths of my own sorrow # Hasn't been near to me... Thank
:49:18. > :49:35.you. APPLAUSE
:49:36. > :49:41.Thank you very much, the spellbinding talent of Benjamin
:49:42. > :49:46.Clementine, last's winner. We're getting closer, the prize is judged
:49:47. > :49:52.by a panel of influential music industry movers and shakers, they
:49:53. > :49:55.are a motley crew of journalists, broadcasters, previous short listed
:49:56. > :49:58.artists and even a Mercury Prize winner. Since earlier this evening
:49:59. > :50:03.they have been locked in a secret room downstairs deliberating this
:50:04. > :50:11.important decision so we popped in to test the temperature just before
:50:12. > :50:15.their discussions began in earnest. In this room they will decide the
:50:16. > :50:21.winner of the Mercury Music Prize 2016. I want a voice that speaks to
:50:22. > :50:24.me and tells me something, almost like I am having a conversation, and
:50:25. > :50:32.that was a good thing this year, to listen to these records because
:50:33. > :50:38.people go on about these industries, dying or dead and we have to
:50:39. > :50:42.resuscitate it... But I got really involved with a lot of the records
:50:43. > :50:49.so I would say the art of conversation is not dead. We are all
:50:50. > :50:54.music fans and that is the most important thing, you cannot see
:50:55. > :50:58.anyone is an expert, no one can say this music is better than anything
:50:59. > :51:02.else but when you get passionate music fans you can decide on
:51:03. > :51:06.something and hold it up and say, this is great. This is the good side
:51:07. > :51:10.of democracy. They talk about it and I do not know if we will have a
:51:11. > :51:15.unanimous decision but I hope everybody will be happy. It will be
:51:16. > :51:20.an interesting discussion, I love talking about music, it is what I
:51:21. > :51:26.do, I like to sit with like-minded people and discuss music without
:51:27. > :51:31.coming to blows! I hope not, because these hands are registered lethal
:51:32. > :51:43.weapons! We shovelled on the winner... -- we shall vote. There
:51:44. > :51:48.you have it. The judges, some -- some good years in that room. We are
:51:49. > :51:51.about to discover what they concluded that firstly, we can look
:51:52. > :52:09.back at all six finalists as revealed tonight... # She flies...
:52:10. > :52:37.# I'm a black man in a white world... # Beyond me... # Beyond...
:52:38. > :52:58.# I'm a Blackstar... # I know this sounds... I love when you are
:52:59. > :53:02.lined... -- around. Using macro in a black track-side and he is shot
:53:03. > :53:13.down. There you have it, the six finalists

:53:16. > :53:22.albums and you can enjoy performances from of them on the BBC

:53:41. > :53:53.list mentions under his belt and he won this award with his band, Pulp,

:54:18. > :54:32.Hello! Come on, I have not been out for a while- hello! I have the
:54:33. > :54:38.result here. I have to tell you a little bit of a story before I can
:54:39. > :54:46.let you know who is inside. Myself and my fellow jurors, sat over
:54:47. > :54:54.there, hello, about four months ago, we started off with 223 albums. And
:54:55. > :54:59.we had to listen to those and that was whittled down to the 12 you have
:55:00. > :55:07.seen performances from tonight. In the end, the winner, who was in
:55:08. > :55:27.here, it came down to a contest between two black stars.
:55:28. > :55:43.And we decided... Are you listening? We as a jury decided... That's...
:55:44. > :55:48.Shut up! , on! We as a jury decided... That if David Bowie was
:55:49. > :55:57.looking down on the Hammersmith Apollo tonight... And let us face
:55:58. > :56:02.it, maybe he has... We have seen traces of his influence in many of
:56:03. > :56:05.the bands we have seen tonight... If he was looking down at the
:56:06. > :56:17.Hammersmith Apollo tonight... He would want the 2016 and I Mercury

:56:30. > :56:32.APPLAUSE Can't Skepta come to the stage,
