0:15:14 > 0:15:19who dwelt in a land of deep shadow a light has shone

0:15:19 > 0:15:23You have made their gladness greater, you have made their joy

0:15:23 > 0:15:29increase, they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice

0:15:29 > 0:15:37at harvest time, as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40For the yoke that was weighing on him, the bar

0:15:40 > 0:15:46across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor,

0:15:46 > 0:15:51these you break as on the day of Midian.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55For all the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood,

0:15:55 > 0:16:01is burnt and consumed by fire.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion

0:16:05 > 0:16:13is laid on his shoulders, and this is the name they give him:

0:16:13 > 0:16:21Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

0:16:21 > 0:16:27Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end,

0:16:27 > 0:16:32for the throne of David and for his royal power,

0:16:32 > 0:16:39which he establishes and makes secure in justice and integrity.

0:16:39 > 0:16:44From this time onwards and for ever, the jealous love

0:16:44 > 0:16:48of the Lord of hosts will do this.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49The word of the Lord.

0:19:05 > 0:19:14# He is Christ the Lord. #

0:19:17 > 0:19:23A reading from the letter of St Paul to Titus.

0:19:23 > 0:19:29God's grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible

0:19:30 > 0:19:37for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do

0:19:37 > 0:19:42is to give up everything that does not lead to God,

0:19:42 > 0:19:47and all our worldly ambitions We must be self-restrained and live

0:19:47 > 0:19:55good and religious lives here in this present world,

0:19:55 > 0:20:00while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come

0:20:00 > 0:20:02with the appearing of the glory of our great God

0:20:02 > 0:20:09and saviour Christ Jesus.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free

0:20:11 > 0:20:15from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his

0:20:15 > 0:20:25very own and would have no ambition except to do good.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28The Word of the Lord.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30ALL:Thanks be to God.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35# Alleluia!

0:21:37 > 0:21:39# Alleluia!

0:21:40 > 0:21:44# Alleluia!

0:21:45 > 0:21:48# Alleluia!

0:21:48 > 0:21:50# Alleluia!

0:21:50 > 0:21:55# Alleluia!

0:21:59 > 0:22:03# I bring you news of great joy.

0:22:03 > 0:22:10# Today a saviour has been born to us - Christ the Lord.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15# Alleluia!

0:22:15 > 0:22:17# Alleluia!

0:22:18 > 0:22:26# Alleluia!

0:22:28 > 0:22:29The Lord be with you.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34ALL:And with your spirit.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40ALL:Glory to you, O Lord.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census

0:23:03 > 0:23:07of the whole world to be taken.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11This census - the first - took place while Quirinius

0:23:11 > 0:23:14was governor of Syria, and everyone went to his own

0:23:14 > 0:23:17town to be registered.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee

0:23:23 > 0:23:27and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David

0:23:27 > 0:23:33called Bethlehem, since he was of David's House and line,

0:23:33 > 0:23:36in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40who was with child.

0:23:40 > 0:23:45While they were there the time came for her to have her child,

0:23:45 > 0:23:49and she gave birth to a son, her first born.

0:23:49 > 0:23:54She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger

0:23:54 > 0:24:01because there was no room for them at the inn.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03In the countryside close by there were shepherds who lived

0:24:03 > 0:24:06in the fields and took it in turns to watch their flocks

0:24:06 > 0:24:10during the night.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13The Angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory

0:24:13 > 0:24:17of the Lord shone round them.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21They were terrified, but the angel said,

0:24:21 > 0:24:27"Do not be afraid.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Listen, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared

0:24:30 > 0:24:40by the whole people.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Today, in the town of David, a saviour has been born to you,

0:24:43 > 0:24:45he is Christ the Lord.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped

0:24:48 > 0:24:51in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

0:24:51 > 0:24:56And suddenly with the angel there was a great throng

0:24:56 > 0:25:03of the heavenly host, praising God and singing:

0:25:03 > 0:25:06"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace to men

0:25:06 > 0:25:08who enjoy his favour".

0:25:08 > 0:25:11The Gospel of the Lord.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22# Alleluia!

0:25:22 > 0:25:24# Alleluia!

0:25:25 > 0:25:32# Alleluia!

0:26:37 > 0:26:42"The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light.

0:26:42 > 0:26:47"On those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone."

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Those words at the beginning of the First Reading

0:26:56 > 0:26:59from the Prophet Isaiah set the scene for our gathering

0:26:59 > 0:27:02in the darkness of this night to celebrate the birth

0:27:02 > 0:27:10of Jesus Christ.

0:27:10 > 0:27:16"A people that walked in darkness, who live in a land of deep shadow."

0:27:20 > 0:27:26When we hear those words, we imagine a people who are trying

0:27:26 > 0:27:33to find their way, to understand why and where they are.

0:27:33 > 0:27:42The "darkness" restrains the ability to move freely.

0:27:42 > 0:27:50The "deep shadow" oppresses the spirit.

0:27:53 > 0:27:58For anyone who has walked in that kind of darkness,

0:27:58 > 0:28:01there is an experience of helplessness,

0:28:01 > 0:28:04of not being in control.

0:28:06 > 0:28:10The door of life can feel locked, shut closed, a door which can only

0:28:10 > 0:28:18be opened from the outside.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21They can only hope that someone from outside that "land of deep

0:28:21 > 0:28:23shadow" will open the door, free them and bring

0:28:23 > 0:28:27them into the light.

0:28:33 > 0:28:40Those who are seriously ill or housebound understand this.

0:28:40 > 0:28:45Those trapped in poverty or destitution understand this.

0:28:47 > 0:28:53Those afflicted by conflict and war understand this.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59Prisoners understand this.

0:29:04 > 0:29:16Migrants and refugees understand this. Christians persecuted for

0:29:16 > 0:29:21their faith, all of those persecuted for their faith understand this.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23Those burdened by sickness, depression or mental

0:29:23 > 0:29:25illness understand this, and those oppressed by their own

0:29:25 > 0:29:32sinfulness understand this.

0:29:35 > 0:29:41When we experience darkness in our lives, whatever form it may take,

0:29:41 > 0:29:50we might think that the story of Christmas is a long way

0:29:50 > 0:29:56from the reality of what is happening to us.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00A long way from that darkness and deep shadow.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03Yet it is in that "land of deep shadow" that the story

0:30:03 > 0:30:08of Christmas becomes, in a very real sense,

0:30:08 > 0:30:12news of great joy - a light in the darkness.

0:30:13 > 0:30:19Christmas reminds us that the "land of deep shadow"

0:30:19 > 0:30:30is a place in which none of us is meant to live.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33Christmas reminds us that the life of each and every one

0:30:33 > 0:30:42of us has infinite value and is precious to God.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45Christmas tells us that it is for this reason that God came

0:30:45 > 0:30:53into our world as a person, in human flesh, to rescue us

0:30:53 > 0:31:01from that place of darkness and assure us we are not alone.

0:31:02 > 0:31:08For the prophet Isaiah, God's coming is like a "great light".

0:31:08 > 0:31:13It is a "child born for us, a son given to us, and dominion

0:31:13 > 0:31:17is laid upon his shoulders."

0:31:18 > 0:31:26That child is a gift from God, the gift of His Son, God-with-us,

0:31:26 > 0:31:30God present among his people.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36In the reading from St Luke's Gospel, we heard how God comes first

0:31:36 > 0:31:46and foremost to the poorest among us, to those who are suffering

0:31:53 > 0:31:57That is symbolised by the shepherds, some of the lowliest time in society

0:31:57 > 0:32:02at the time of our Lord.

0:32:02 > 0:32:05He comes to those who are suffering

0:32:05 > 0:32:08or feel oppressed, to those who walk in darkness and live in a "land

0:32:08 > 0:32:11of deep shadow", to those whose spirit is brought so low that

0:32:11 > 0:32:13at times they are unable to see any purpose or meaning

0:32:13 > 0:32:21to their life at all.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25Why is this bishop going on about darkness and deep shadow, you may

0:32:25 > 0:32:29ask, in this season of Christmas joy?

0:32:29 > 0:32:33Perhaps there are some of you here in this cathedral

0:32:33 > 0:32:37or sharing in this Mass on television at home tonight

0:32:37 > 0:32:41who are in some way or other experiencing that poverty

0:32:41 > 0:32:51or oppression of spirit in your own lives right now.

0:32:53 > 0:32:59In fact, I dared to say that all of us, at some point in our lives, have

0:32:59 > 0:33:04gone through something of that darkness and deep shadow.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07If so, then I ask you to hear again the message

0:33:07 > 0:33:12of the angels to the shepherds in the Gospel: "Do not be afraid.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Do not be afraid.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21"Listen, I bring you news of great joy.

0:33:21 > 0:33:25"Today in the town of David, a saviour has been born to you.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28"He is Christ the Lord.

0:33:28 > 0:33:32"And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped

0:33:32 > 0:33:36"in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."

0:33:38 > 0:33:42This is a message for all of us - a message of joy to be shared

0:33:42 > 0:33:47by the whole people.

0:33:47 > 0:33:51Jesus Christ wishes to share our life, to live with us,

0:33:51 > 0:33:56wishes to be close to us and bring the light of His love into any

0:33:56 > 0:34:01darkness which is in our lives.

0:34:01 > 0:34:05So, do not be afraid!

0:34:07 > 0:34:12In the times of darkness in your life, in those
