0:02:11 > 0:02:13It's really inspiring to think

0:02:13 > 0:02:15that these kids really have so much

0:02:15 > 0:02:18potential, so I'm really excited to see what they come up with.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Last time, 14-year-old singer-songwriter Hannah

0:02:27 > 0:02:31played her songs in public for the very first time and she loved it.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I am on Cloud Nine.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Hannah went down well at her debut performance,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38but it was to an older audience.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42She needs to play a crowd who will be more in tune with the pop

0:02:42 > 0:02:45culture references in the lyrics of the great songs she is writing.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47So I have an exciting plan.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49So here we are at Hannah's school.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52I'm about to surprise her, she has no idea I'm coming,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54to let her know about her next big gig.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I haven't been to school in a while, so here goes.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02MUSIC: "Mission Impossible Theme" by Lalo Schifrin

0:03:07 > 0:03:11(So I'm about to interrupt her Health and Social Care class.)

0:03:20 > 0:03:23I can't wait to tell her what her gig is.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26It's definitely going to be the biggest gig of her life.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Hello!

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Sorry to disturb your class, but I'm here to see Hannah.

0:03:36 > 0:03:41How are you? You good? Aww!

0:03:41 > 0:03:44- How are you?- I'm good, how are you doing?- Pretty good.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49I'm here to tell you about your next gig, your next big gig.

0:03:49 > 0:03:55Erm, I heard, when you played your last gig, erm, the people there were

0:03:55 > 0:03:58a little bit older, so they didn't really get, like, they didn't

0:03:58 > 0:04:02really appreciate the Harry Styles jokes and stuff like that.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04So, erm, we've gone and got you another gig,

0:04:04 > 0:04:08and it's going to be at CBBC Live

0:04:08 > 0:04:11on the Main Stage in Leeds,

0:04:11 > 0:04:15and there's going to be over 4,000 people at this event, so...

0:04:16 > 0:04:18It's a pretty big gig.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20- CHEERING AND APPLAUSE - Yeah!

0:04:22 > 0:04:26- So this is your class, yeah?- This is my Health and Social Care class.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28Brilliant. Have they heard your songs?

0:04:28 > 0:04:30- Erm...- No.- No. - Who wants to hear Hannah sing?

0:04:30 > 0:04:32CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:04:32 > 0:04:35# I, when I'm all grown up

0:04:35 > 0:04:36# I want to rock the stage

0:04:36 > 0:04:40# I want to get older but never age

0:04:40 > 0:04:42# And have a slight obsession

0:04:42 > 0:04:46# With a lazy-eyed man named Russell Howard

0:04:46 > 0:04:51# Oh, I'mma put on a show

0:04:51 > 0:04:57# To show you me

0:04:57 > 0:05:01# Let you hear my musical autobiography... #

0:05:02 > 0:05:05So you're going to be singing that in Leeds

0:05:05 > 0:05:07in front of a massive audience.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10- How are you feeling? - Really nervous already. It's like...

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Guys, do you think she can do it?

0:05:13 > 0:05:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:20 > 0:05:23All right, see you later, Hannah. See you soon.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Nice to meet you, girls. See you later.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28ALL: Bye!

0:05:28 > 0:05:30GIRLS CHEER HANNAH

0:05:30 > 0:05:32'That went down well.'

0:05:32 > 0:05:35It's actually so surreal. Like, it doesn't feel real.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38It feels like a dream.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Music dreams is what Music City is all about.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Last time, I met 13-year-old Shay.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50He is a DJ with big ambitions.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54In the future I would like to do something really big like a festival.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56More used to playing for his cousins,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59he recently upped his game and lined himself up a slot

0:05:59 > 0:06:02supporting local dance legends Japanese Popstars

0:06:02 > 0:06:04in one of Derry's leading venues.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08But only one thing was missing...

0:06:09 > 0:06:11A crowd.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15I do feel a bit less excited when there's not a lot of people there.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20I'm determined Shay gets the crowd he so wants,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23so I've organised for him, in just three weeks' time,

0:06:23 > 0:06:24to play at a major festival

0:06:24 > 0:06:27supporting Radio 1 star Phil Taggart.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34I've no doubts about Shay's ability, but he's got a big challenge ahead.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37He should go straight to the top for a helping hand.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Shay is headed for London, where I've arranged for him

0:06:42 > 0:06:45to meet Radio 1's very own Scott Mills.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50A bit scary on trains.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53It's like you look at something, trees or something, just bam!

0:06:59 > 0:07:02It's the first time Shay has ever headed for the bright lights

0:07:02 > 0:07:05of the big city, which makes it an adventure in itself.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08I'm glad to be out of the tube, that was a bit scary.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15I didn't expect to see the actual red buses or the black taxis.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17I thought that was just, like, a stereotype.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Scott Mills is a DJing legend.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29He's done it all, from hosting his own Radio 1 show

0:07:29 > 0:07:33to performing to thousands at festivals all over the world.

0:07:33 > 0:07:38He's a proper DJ. Like, like, beat-matching and everything.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- Oh, no, I can't even do that. - I said that.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42LAUGHTER

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Oh, no. Need to watch my back.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Shay settles in to hear a bit of Scott's show

0:07:56 > 0:07:59before quizzing him on how to handle a festival crowd.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03How do you feel about DJing in front of a crowd? Is it scary?

0:08:03 > 0:08:06I used to really, really get scared, but, erm,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08the more you do it the less scared you become,

0:08:08 > 0:08:11and, erm, it's actually really exciting,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13because the crowd are kind of,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16if you look up for a second from the decks and actually

0:08:16 > 0:08:19look at what the crowd are doing, that's when it's, like, amazing.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21- Does it scare you?- Erm...

0:08:22 > 0:08:25- Sort of.- But I think the adrenaline of when you get out there

0:08:25 > 0:08:27and you see all those people, initially it'll be scary,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29but once you've started I think you'd be fine.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Cos they're all there to have a good time,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34so, you know, it's going to be great, it's going to be fine.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Time for Shay to start preparing his festival set.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Back in Derry, another Music City kid

0:08:51 > 0:08:53is about to start his musical journey.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Conall, come on, there's a match at the Brandywell!

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Come on, look, wait till you see what I got you.

0:08:57 > 0:08:5914-year-old Conall loves football.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Come on, the Candystripes! Come on, get it on you now.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04We'll get down to the Brandywell.

0:09:07 > 0:09:08Programmes!

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Every home game, he heads for the Brandywell Stadium

0:09:11 > 0:09:14to support his beloved Derry City with his grandad Tommy.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18He has good reason to feel a special connection to the club.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Me grandad used to be the groundsman in there,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23and he used to take me down to do a wee bit of...

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Who was driving the tractor?- Me.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28I used to drive the tractor when I was about seven.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35Another passion he shares with Tommy is Irish music.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37He bought Conall his first fiddle,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40and now he plays small events around the city.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44When he practises at home, he always has one dedicated super-fan.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48CONALL PLAYS A REEL

0:09:48 > 0:09:50HE LAUGHS

0:09:50 > 0:09:52That dog's dancing!

0:09:52 > 0:09:54CONALL PLAYS REEL

0:10:04 > 0:10:07So I'm just on my way to see Conall now.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10I'm really intrigued by his fiddle playing and his traditional

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Irish roots, so hopefully I'll get to hear some more.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18'Irish folk music is a genre I know very little about,

0:10:18 > 0:10:22'but it feels like I've come to the right place to learn.'

0:10:22 > 0:10:25- Hello.- Hi, Conall!- He-ey! - How's it going?

0:10:25 > 0:10:27THEY PLAY A JIG

0:10:40 > 0:10:42CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:10:45 > 0:10:48- That was brilliant. Thank you so much.- That was a bit of fun.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52- What's that piece called, or has it got a name?- Erm, the music?- Yeah.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56- Harvest Home.- Not like the stuff you're doing!- Yeah!

0:11:01 > 0:11:03'Conall's grandad Tommy introduced him to the fiddle

0:11:03 > 0:11:05'when he was very young.'

0:11:05 > 0:11:07I was watching the TV.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11- It was musical and I started tapping my foot.- Aww!

0:11:11 > 0:11:15- And he said, he thought to himself, there could be something there.- Yeah.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- So then he got me a fiddle. - What, there and then?- Aye.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22- Oh, cool.- Ever since then I was playing the fiddle.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26So now I've met Conall,

0:11:26 > 0:11:30I have definitely got a bit of a vibe for his Irish roots.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33I've had his sisters doing Irish dancing in the living room,

0:11:33 > 0:11:35him playing the fiddle for me,

0:11:35 > 0:11:38so I'm really going to have to find something with a traditional vibe

0:11:38 > 0:11:41in the city this year for him to perform at.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46While I'm having a think about what event Conall could perform at,

0:11:46 > 0:11:51Shay is gearing up for his very own DJ slot at the Glasgowbury Festival.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Details have been published in a national newspaper.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Not only will he find out what time he is on,

0:11:58 > 0:12:01he'll be able to find out just how long he's playing for.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04So I'm hoping for a half an hour shift, that would be the best.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07I don't think they'll give me anything over that.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14There you are. So I'm on for an hour

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and I'm on at half seven to half eight. So that's brilliant.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20I wasn't expecting to be that late or have that amount of time to play.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22So, that's...

0:12:22 > 0:12:25I think I'm going to enjoy that.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32Shay wastes no time in getting down to preparing his hour-long DJ set.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36It's a very skilled job.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39He chooses the tracks that he thinks will attract a crowd

0:12:39 > 0:12:41and keep them dancing.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44He has to work out what song is going to float effortlessly into

0:12:44 > 0:12:49another by matching the beats in the song, or the BPM as the DJs call it.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54A set list is completely different from a playlist on something like iTunes.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58That's what most people think it is. The music I make's very technical.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Not content with just picking the best tunes and mixing them

0:13:01 > 0:13:05into each other, Shay is able to add his own musical compositions

0:13:05 > 0:13:07which help improve his set.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10There's a lot of work that I have to do before I'm happy with it.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13If you listen to it together with everything else...

0:13:13 > 0:13:16BEATS OF MUSIC

0:13:16 > 0:13:20That's the kick into the song. That's the kick you use.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22I'm thinking about changing it.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25At the touch of a button, Shay can call upon a full orchestra of

0:13:25 > 0:13:30musical instruments to enhance the sound of the tracks he has picked.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32DRUM BEATS PLAY

0:13:32 > 0:13:37So I'm thinking this pattern, just simple. Just playing in.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Usually I just play around with the drum patterns.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44DRUM BEATS PLAY

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Just going to loop it to see if it sounds all right.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49TECHNO MUSIC PLAYS

0:13:49 > 0:13:51That sounds better, I think.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56It sounds better than just the plain four-four-kick.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Hannah too has been working on her big gig in Leeds.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04- Come on through. - Oh, my gosh.- This is the live room.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11She has written a new song especially for the show.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15Glenn has got her in the studio to work on it and record a demo.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18She has all the confidence in the world

0:14:18 > 0:14:20when she plays other people's songs,

0:14:20 > 0:14:24but when it comes to the brilliant songs she's written herself,

0:14:24 > 0:14:25it is a different story.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29# So here we are

0:14:29 > 0:14:34# Just me and my guitar like the lone park ranger

0:14:34 > 0:14:38# Writing songs for a stranger.... #

0:14:42 > 0:14:47I might change the format a wee tiny bit. Don't be worrying. For live,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49keep it the way you're doing it.

0:14:49 > 0:14:50# California girls... #

0:14:50 > 0:14:53In preparation for her Leeds concert,

0:14:53 > 0:14:57I want to convince her that she really belongs in the big time.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00I always think to play my own songs, it's a bit of a risk.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02It's always a bit of a risk,

0:15:02 > 0:15:04like, are they going to like it?

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Are they going to hate it?

0:15:06 > 0:15:11One of the headline events of City of Culture is Radio 1's

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Big Weekend and I'm sending her to soak up the atmosphere

0:15:14 > 0:15:16and meet Woody, who is the drummer

0:15:16 > 0:15:18in one of her favourite bands, Bastille.

0:15:18 > 0:15:25# I was left to my own devices

0:15:25 > 0:15:27# Many days... #

0:15:29 > 0:15:32I actually do a cover of one of your songs. I do a cover of Pompeii.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Nice. Can I please hear your cover?

0:15:36 > 0:15:38- OK.- If that's all right, yeah? - OK, yes.- Let's hear it, then.

0:15:40 > 0:15:47# I was left in my own devices... #

0:15:47 > 0:15:53'I never thought like, I would be sitting here playing Pompeii with,'

0:15:53 > 0:15:55you know, one of the guys that wrote the song.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58# Eh-oh eh-oh

0:15:58 > 0:16:00# Eh-eh-oh eh-oh... #

0:16:00 > 0:16:03'While Hannah is rubbing shoulders with her favourite pop stars,

0:16:03 > 0:16:05'guess who else she bumps into?'

0:16:05 > 0:16:07So how are you feeling that you're going to be

0:16:07 > 0:16:11performing on a big stage outside like this at Radio 1?

0:16:11 > 0:16:13No words, like, I'm just...

0:16:13 > 0:16:19Even just being here today is like, "What?"

0:16:19 > 0:16:23To think that I'm going to be doing something like that

0:16:23 > 0:16:24is just...mental.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31Music City isn't just about individual performances.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34Our entire group of 13 are all working on a performance that they

0:16:34 > 0:16:39will do together. I've chosen the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43But when it was announced, it didn't go down too well.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46It always is playing when someone gets put out of the X Factor.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Everyone keeps saying that they hear it all the time

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- so it's played out.- Yeah! - So we revamp it.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56OK, guys, is it nice and warm in there?

0:16:56 > 0:17:00So I think I'll have to do something radical to get the ball rolling.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02For real.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04No!

0:17:04 > 0:17:06SHE SCREAMS

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Oh, my God!

0:17:09 > 0:17:12# My feet, feet can't touch the ground and I can't hear a sound... #

0:17:12 > 0:17:14- Don't go!- Whaaa!

0:17:14 > 0:17:17SHOUTING

0:17:17 > 0:17:18Waaaaaaah!

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Why don't we just get into practice?

0:17:23 > 0:17:26# Words don't mean a thing

0:17:26 > 0:17:27# I'm not listening

0:17:27 > 0:17:30# Keep talking all night long... #

0:17:30 > 0:17:33Next, I'm going to inject more fun into their way of thinking

0:17:33 > 0:17:34about the song.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38I'm getting them to visualise the various different parts

0:17:38 > 0:17:39by spraying them on a wall.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43OK, guys. Now we're going to try and workshop our ideas.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46We're all going to get paint and grab a colour each.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50That's going to be like your part, so this is a big blank canvas.

0:17:50 > 0:17:51This is the start of the song

0:17:51 > 0:17:53and way down there's the end of the song.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55So every person has a colour

0:17:55 > 0:17:57and the more colours we have, the more people there are.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00If there's only one colour, there will be only one thing playing.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03# All you got to do now, express yourself... #

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Do you think the piano should come in here, then?

0:18:07 > 0:18:09I could make the beats, along with the piano.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Do you want to try and maybe put in some colour?

0:18:13 > 0:18:17At the end, we should all come in together and have that really big...

0:18:19 > 0:18:23I think it really unlocked everybody's, kind of, creative side.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27- And made everybody think about each other.- Expressed themselves more.

0:18:27 > 0:18:32They've really bonded well together today. The graffiti was a great way

0:18:32 > 0:18:34to start, but I think we need to take all this

0:18:34 > 0:18:37and go back to the practice rooms and get a concrete plan.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39The group have definitely made their mark.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Let's hope this can inspire them in the practice room.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Shay's big day has arrived

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Glasgowbury is the largest independent

0:18:54 > 0:18:56festival in Northern Ireland,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59with over 5,000 people dancing to some of the biggest local acts.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Shay is there to keep the party going.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07He heads straight to the dance stage,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10to check out where he'll be taking to the decks,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13right before Radio 1's Phil Taggart plays a headline set.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18Watching the other DJs at work

0:19:18 > 0:19:22and, crucially, how the crowd are reacting to the music,

0:19:22 > 0:19:23Shay makes a difficult decision.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27I was watching some of the DJs for a while and I've decided to change

0:19:27 > 0:19:30some of the tracks about. I will play the same tracks,

0:19:30 > 0:19:35but maybe start off with something, erm, something like you hear now,

0:19:35 > 0:19:37that's not too, eh, pumping.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40I'm going to be on shortly,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42so I'm heading to the back of the stage.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46Shay feels the set list he has spent so long preparing

0:19:46 > 0:19:50might not be what the crowd want to hear, so with just half an hour

0:19:50 > 0:19:53before he's due to go on, he scraps it.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57I'm happy to do it, but I don't really want to be doing it,

0:19:57 > 0:20:02because I have the set perfectly made, where I know what time

0:20:02 > 0:20:04they mix in and what time they mix out.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07And I'm going to be taking a risk, just playing a song that

0:20:07 > 0:20:10I don't know if it works and they want another song.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14The mix is going to be a bit difficult.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15HE SIGHS

0:20:15 > 0:20:19It's all part of being a DJ. You have to take risks in playing

0:20:19 > 0:20:23and just try and know what everybody wants to hear.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31Only a few months ago, Shay was playing to an empty room,

0:20:31 > 0:20:34but now he's preparing to play the biggest gig of his life.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37The question is, will he be able to step up and make it up

0:20:37 > 0:20:40as he goes along, track by track?

0:20:41 > 0:20:45- ANNOUNCER:- Ladies and gentlemen, your DJ for the evening,

0:20:45 > 0:20:48give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:20:48 > 0:20:52DANCE MUSIC PLAYS

0:20:59 > 0:21:02First track down and the crowd are still dancing.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05He's under pressure to keep his good start going.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08DANCE MUSIC PLAYS

0:21:13 > 0:21:16It seems to be working. Shay's last-minute music choices

0:21:16 > 0:21:20are bringing more and more people to the dance stage.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24It looks like he's really pulled it off. Go on, Shay!

0:21:24 > 0:21:28DANCE MUSIC PLAYS

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:21:38 > 0:21:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Only 13!

0:21:41 > 0:21:43How sick was that?!

0:21:44 > 0:21:47Give it again, give it again, give it again, give it again!

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Never had a feeling like that before. I was so happy.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54The set, they turned out perfect.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Never been this happy in my life.

0:21:57 > 0:21:58Oh...

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Having played a blinding set of brilliant dance music,

0:22:04 > 0:22:09Shay is finding out what it really feels like to be a superstar DJ.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14'When I came down, I was signing autographs,

0:22:14 > 0:22:19'getting hugs, everything. Everybody recognised me!'

0:22:19 > 0:22:22It's good to be recognised. That's what every DJ wants.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24It's what you need, just to be recognised.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28But there is one part of being a superstar DJ that Shay

0:22:28 > 0:22:30is not entirely comfortable with.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33- Give me a wee kiss. - No, you're all right.- Oh-ho!

0:22:33 > 0:22:35How mad was that?

0:22:35 > 0:22:37And that even goes for his mum!

0:22:38 > 0:22:41This was the best gig I've ever played.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Best type of day - sunny weather, outdoors -

0:22:44 > 0:22:47best reaction, best crowd - everything.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57An event to top even Glasgowbury is due in Derry

0:22:57 > 0:23:01in just three weeks - The All-Ireland Fleadh,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04the world's biggest celebration of Irish music is going to hit town

0:23:04 > 0:23:07and over 400,000 people are expected.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Thinking about Conall's talents on the fiddle,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14that is just too good an opportunity to miss.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- How are you getting on, then? - Grand.- Playing away?

0:23:17 > 0:23:20I've landed him a top spot in the programme

0:23:20 > 0:23:23and Jenny is helping me break the news.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25Cara Dillon is a wonderful Irish artist

0:23:25 > 0:23:30and she wants you to join her and her band for their big show

0:23:30 > 0:23:34on the last night of the festival. This is a massive opportunity

0:23:34 > 0:23:37and you're going to have to work really hard to be ready in time.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41This might be totally different to anything else you've ever done

0:23:41 > 0:23:45and it's going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of practice to be

0:23:45 > 0:23:46ready in time and be focused,

0:23:46 > 0:23:50but I am more than sure that you are capable of doing this.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53- Brilliant!- It's class.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56Going to be a quick turnaround. He hasn't got long to learn it.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58It's going to be hard graft. A lot of practice.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04The Fleadh is just three short weeks away

0:24:04 > 0:24:08and the family holiday in Donegal - an unmoveable annual event -

0:24:08 > 0:24:10lies smack in the middle of Conall's build-up.

0:24:19 > 0:24:23It doesn't help that Cara has given him a tough tune to learn,

0:24:23 > 0:24:26- right at the edge of his ability. - Are you worried about this new tune?

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Well, it's just the standard and the speed of it.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33The speed? The best way to learn a tune is to whistle it.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36And whistle it at the speed that it's played.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39So, that will give your wee brain a notion that, "Here, I have to

0:24:39 > 0:24:40"play this at a certain speed."

0:24:40 > 0:24:44- Would you rather be playing tunes or washing dishes?- Playing tunes.

0:24:44 > 0:24:45Would you?

0:24:45 > 0:24:48FIDDLE MUSIC PLAYS

0:24:48 > 0:24:52Rather than whistle it, Conall chooses to listen to the tune

0:24:52 > 0:24:55over and over again on his tablet.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59I have to learn it without sheet music.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04I have to learn it by ear, so it's going to be hard to learn it.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Even though his sisters and cousins are enjoying the water,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Conall gets on with the job at hand.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16It's hard to start off with. It's swing fast.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20I think I'm going to need a bit of help with this one.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25Conall still has a couple of weeks to learn Cara's tune.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30But for Hannah, her big day has arrived.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38She is in Leeds for her concert, and in just two hours,

0:25:38 > 0:25:42she will see if she can successfully complete her journey

0:25:42 > 0:25:45from bedroom songwriter to big-stage performer.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47- There's the stage, Hannah.- Ooh!

0:25:48 > 0:25:49- Big enough?- Yeah!

0:25:49 > 0:25:50HE LAUGHS

0:26:00 > 0:26:01Just 15 minutes to go

0:26:01 > 0:26:04and Hannah isn't the one who is feeling the pressure.

0:26:07 > 0:26:08I'm sick as a dog!

0:26:08 > 0:26:12I am so nervous, I am going to throw up all over the place!

0:26:13 > 0:26:16I am not coping very well with it, so.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18SHE SIGHS

0:26:18 > 0:26:20APPLAUSE

0:26:20 > 0:26:22Dick and Dom are on stage and nearly ready

0:26:22 > 0:26:24to introduce Hannah and her songs to the audience.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33- Jeepers!- Just wait here two seconds.

0:26:33 > 0:26:34CHEERING

0:26:34 > 0:26:37Argh!

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Oh, my God.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42- Relax, enjoy yourself and remember to smile.- OK.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Have a really good time. This is your moment.

0:26:45 > 0:26:50I never thought I'd get to here, where I am, ever,

0:26:50 > 0:26:52and I'm really nervous now, so don't talk to me!

0:26:52 > 0:26:55This is it. It is time for Hannah to play her new song

0:26:55 > 0:26:58to a crowd for the very first time.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01Make a big Leeds noise, and a big welcome, for Hannah!

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Hi!

0:27:03 > 0:27:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:07 > 0:27:10# I feel sorry for the girl

0:27:10 > 0:27:12# Who came before

0:27:12 > 0:27:16# Cos I don't know who you are

0:27:16 > 0:27:19# Any more

0:27:19 > 0:27:21# So here we are

0:27:21 > 0:27:24# Just me and my guitar

0:27:24 > 0:27:30# Like the lone park ranger Writing a song for a stranger

0:27:31 > 0:27:36# And I'm sorry for wasting your time

0:27:36 > 0:27:40# But in a way, you'll always be mine

0:27:42 > 0:27:44# So, here we are
