:49:48. > :49:54.inside the Musikverein, Daniel Barenboim conducting in in front of

:49:55. > :49:57.not far short of 2,000 people. That number dwarfed by the 50 million

:02:36. > :02:39.monastery. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra what very popular for a

:02:40. > :02:45.weekend trip, but not with Strauss, who hated climbing and never went

:02:46. > :02:51.walking there. He hated heights so much he would sit on the floor of

:02:52. > :03:01.his railway carriage and avoid looking out of the window on his

:03:02. > :03:06.trip to Linz. Capriccio was his farewell to the

:07:16. > :07:19.2014.For many one of the highlights of the New Year's concert is the

:07:20. > :07:26.moment when musicians are joined by the dancers of the State Ballet.

:07:27. > :07:27.This year they are in the Liechtenstein Palace in the centre

:07:28. > :07:43.of the city. MUSIC: "The Romantics, Waltz"

:07:44. > :14:38.by Joseph Lanner APPLAUSE

:14:39. > :14:43.Music by Josef Lanner, the waltz for the Romantics. The dancing this year

:14:44. > :14:49.could be considered Britain's contribution. The choreography is by

:14:50. > :14:55.Ashley Page, and the costumes by Vivienne Westwood, who is married to

:14:56. > :15:00.an Austrian. Two polkas next never before performed at a New Year's Day

:15:01. > :15:03.concert. In a moment Shenanigans. But first a polka with a bit of

:15:04. > :15:23.teasing going on. MUSIC: "Banter, Polka Mazur"

:15:24. > :20:17.by Josef Strauss APPLAUSE the Shenanigans polka and

:20:18. > :20:28.before that the teasing polka, both by Johann Strauss, both getting

:20:29. > :20:34.their New Year's premieres. Even after many New Year's Day concerts

:20:35. > :21:18.they've still played less than 50% of the Strauss repertoire.

:21:19. > :24:37.The Musikverein feels rather intimate when you are inside it,

:24:38. > :24:44.though the richness of the design can be overwhelming, with golden

:24:45. > :24:51.caryatids that appear to support the balcony, and fine tapestries hanging

:24:52. > :24:58.in front of the boxes. Another reference to Richard Strauss next,

:24:59. > :25:01.on his 150th anniversary, a waltz by Johann Strauss, echoed in Der

:25:02. > :27:06.Rosenkavalier. MUSIC: "Secret Attractions, Waltz"

:27:07. > :35:09.by Josef Strauss APPLAUSE

:35:10. > :35:16.the Dynamiden Waltz by Johann Strauss, with the subtitle Secret

:35:17. > :35:20.Powers of Attraction. Music much to influence Richard Strauss when he

:35:21. > :35:24.came to write his opera, Der Rosenkavalier. Johann Strauss died

:35:25. > :35:30.very young, just before his 43rd birthday. Not long before his death

:35:31. > :35:47.he wrote a sparkling polka called Without a Care.

:35:48. > :37:18.MUSIC: "Without A Care" by Josef Strauss

:37:19. > :37:23.APPLAUSE Daniel Barenboim shouting at the end

:37:24. > :37:30.of Without a Care, a quick polka by Johann Strauss. Officially marking

:37:31. > :37:33.the end of the 2014 Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra New Year's

:37:34. > :37:42.Day concert, except as regular fans know, there are a few more treats

:37:43. > :37:48.ahead of us yet. Present by a member of the orchestra, that bouquet of

:37:49. > :37:52.flowers contributed this year by the orchestra itself. Grown by the

:37:53. > :37:58.gardeners and nurserymen and women of Austria. Well put together by the

:37:59. > :38:06.look of it, as he struggles to pull one out. No, he's failed.

:38:07. > :38:11.APPLAUSE this is Daniel Barenboim's second

:38:12. > :38:17.appearance at the New Year's Day concert. Significance to the fact

:38:18. > :38:20.that the orchestra asked this great peacemaker and musical diplomat to

:38:21. > :38:26.return to conduct again. He is truly a citizen of the world. Born in

:38:27. > :38:30.Argentina, raised in Israel, travelling not just on their

:38:31. > :38:35.passports but on Palestinian and Spanish documents as well. It is a

:38:36. > :38:43.busy time of year for the players in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. I

:38:44. > :38:49.was talking to one of those on stage today, Alina Pinchas. She was

:38:50. > :38:54.playing on Christmas Day, and had a performance of the Nutcracker in the

:38:55. > :38:58.morning and the evening. This is one of nine women on stage this year. It

:38:59. > :39:05.may still be a small percentage but at least it is up on 12 months ago.

:39:06. > :39:11.Maybe we'll be in double figures by 2015. There is controversy about the

:39:12. > :39:12.dominance of male players in this orchestra.

:39:13. > :41:26.The first encore. APPLAUSE The first encore by Johann

:41:27. > :41:33.Strauss, a quick polka, Carriere. Josef showing off his love of horse

:41:34. > :41:38.riding. Carriere is the fastest gait at which a horse can be ridden. A

:41:39. > :41:43.work that had an unfortunate start. Its premiere at the Volksgarten, the

:41:44. > :41:48.day after the Austrian northern Army had been decisive battle of the

:41:49. > :41:53.Austro-Prussian war, hence the work got rather overlooked. This concert

:41:54. > :41:57.shown on big screens in cafes and hotels across Vienna this morning. I

:41:58. > :42:02.imagine the waiters in the cafes around the Musikverein casting a

:42:03. > :42:11.final eye at the arrangements of cutlery and glasses ready for an

:42:12. > :42:15.onslaught of hungry concert goers or musicians, rad for a glass of

:42:16. > :42:24.Gruener Veliner to wash it down with. The Philharmonic Orchestra

:42:25. > :42:31.stay in the Imperial Hotel, with a red carpet laid down for the maestro

:54:24. > :54:26.orchestra. This is his second appearance conducting the New Year's
