:01:00. > :01:05.I'm Petroc Trelawny, good morning and happy new year. You join us in

:01:06. > :01:08.the Golden Hall of the Musikverein here in Vienna, where the players of

:01:09. > :01:12.the Vienna Philharmonic are back on stage for the climax of their annual

:01:13. > :01:16.New Year's Day concert, this year directed by Daniel Barenboim. As

:01:17. > :01:19.well as the rich splendour of this ravishingly pretty concert hall,

:01:20. > :01:23.with its busts and caryatids and friezes, over the 90 minutes or so,

:01:24. > :01:25.we will be enjoying the splendours of a sumptuously restored city

:01:26. > :01:33.palace later, filled with dancers from the Vienna State Ballet. They

:01:34. > :01:37.are dressed by one of Great Britain's leading designers. And

:01:38. > :01:40.alongside the family Strauss, we'll mark the 150th birthday of a great

:01:41. > :01:50.opera composer who shared their name. Although he is unrelated, she

:01:51. > :12:09.shares their surname. Richard Strauss.

:12:10. > :12:13.APPLAUSE Daniel Barenboim conducting the

:12:14. > :12:17.Overture to Johann Strauss's operetta Waldmeister, a project that

:12:18. > :12:20.came at an opportune moment, at a time when many were writing the

:12:21. > :12:25.composer off, saying he'd run out of good ideas. The show was a huge hit,

:12:26. > :12:31.running for 88 performances. The score also included a Gallop. Part

:12:32. > :12:34.of the opera is set in a mill and the Gallop was performed by a

:12:35. > :12:38.chorus-line of apprentice millers. The tune was based on a song Strauss

:12:39. > :14:54.had written in his youth when he dated a miller's daughter.

:14:55. > :14:57.The Klipp Klapp Galop from Johann Strauss Junior's operetta

:14:58. > :15:06.Waldmeister, written by the 70-year-old composer just four years

:15:07. > :15:09.before his death. The sun has come out here in Vienna after a very

:15:10. > :15:15.misty start, very mild for the time of year, very warm inside the

:15:16. > :15:21.Musikverein. Daniel Barenboim is conducting in front of not far short

:15:22. > :15:23.of 2000 people, but that is dwarfed by the 50 million reckoned to tune

:15:24. > :15:27.in on radio and television around the world. This year, 92 countries

:15:28. > :15:30.showing the concert, Daniel Barenboim's involvement meaning for

:15:31. > :15:32.the first time it is being shown by the Palestine Broadcasting

:15:33. > :15:36.Corporation and in Argentina, where he was born. The biggest audience is

:15:37. > :15:40.in China, and this year viewers in the tiny Pacific states of Tuvalu,

:15:41. > :15:48.the Cook Islands and Nauru also join the party for the first time.

:15:49. > :15:56.We have a little less far to travel this morning, we are heading to the

:15:57. > :16:01.Vienna Woods for Tales From The Vienna Woods, dating from the 1860s.

:16:02. > :16:04.TV viewers will see the music illustrated by pictures of the

:16:05. > :16:06.Augustinian monastery at Klosterneuburg, filled with art

:16:07. > :16:11.treasures and with wonderful Gothic architecture. It celebrates its

:16:12. > :16:18.900th anniversary this year. The zither features in the school. --

:16:19. > :27:54.score. Wilfried Scharf playing the zither,

:27:55. > :27:56.delighting Daniel Barenboim in Tales From The Vienna Woods, with pictures

:27:57. > :28:03.of the 900-year-old Klosterneuburg monastery. The Vienna Woods are very

:28:04. > :28:07.rural yet just a few miles from the centre of Vienna, very popular for a

:28:08. > :28:10.weekend trip, although not with Strauss himself, who hated climbing

:28:11. > :28:14.and never went walking in the woods. He hated heights so much that he

:28:15. > :28:18.would sit on the floor of his railway carriage to avoid seeing out

:28:19. > :28:29.the window when he took the train to Linz. Is there any better place to

:28:30. > :28:32.start the New Year than in Vienna? So much happening here, the annual

:28:33. > :28:34.race around the Ringstrasse took place yesterday, annual performances

:28:35. > :28:37.of Offenbach's operetta Die Fledermaus at Vienna State Opera

:28:38. > :28:40.tonight, Beethoven Nine is performed every new year at the Konzerthaus

:28:41. > :28:43.across the road. This is principally the day of the Strauss family, but

:28:44. > :28:47.Josef Hellmesberger also features each year. He was a conductor here

:28:48. > :28:55.at the start of the 20th century. Daniel Barenboim conducts a French

:28:56. > :28:59.polka by Hellmesberger. He was. By Mahler, an affair with a dancer

:29:00. > :31:56.didn't help his case much either! -- forced out.

:31:57. > :32:07.A French polka by former Vienna Phil concertmaster Josef Hellmesberger.

:32:08. > :33:45.Next, we are going to serenade the flowers.

:33:46. > :33:56.Josef Strauss' Bouquet Polka, and if you have been admiring the flowers,

:33:57. > :34:01.it is difficult not to. This time they are a gift from the gardeners

:34:02. > :34:03.and florists from Vienna. This year marks the 150th

:34:04. > :34:07.anniversary of Richard Strauss's birth - not related in any way to

:34:08. > :34:13.the Strauss family - but his music is often heard here in Vienna.

:34:14. > :34:22.Capriccio was his farewell to the opera stage. He started work on it

:34:23. > :38:22.in the summer of 1940. We are going to hear the Moonshine music.

:38:23. > :38:25.Daniel Barenboim conducts the Moonshine Music from Capriccio,

:38:26. > :38:34.performed when the countess is deep in thought on the terrace. Radio 3

:38:35. > :38:46.will be marking Richard Strauss' birthday by broadcasting all of his

:38:47. > :38:48.prose. Now we find the Vienna State Ballet dancers in the centre of the

:38:49. > :46:09.city. Music by Josef Lanner, the

:46:10. > :46:12.Romantics. The dancing could be considered Britain's contribution to

:46:13. > :46:15.this New Year's Day Concert. The choreography by Ashley Page, former

:46:16. > :46:18.Royal Ballet principal dancer and director of Scottish Ballet in

:46:19. > :46:21.Glasgow, and the costumes by Vivienne Westwood, who is married to

:46:22. > :46:24.an Austrian and in the past has designed for the Burgtheater here in

:46:25. > :46:27.Vienna. This is the 74th annual New Year's Day concert in Vienna. The

:46:28. > :46:31.first took place during the dark days of the Second World War.

:46:32. > :46:34.Clemens Krauss conducted. He was the first to get the Vienna Phil to

:46:35. > :46:37.regularly play music by the Strauss family. He had instigated an annual

:46:38. > :46:49.Strauss gala at the Salzburg Festival. It was broadcast for the

:46:50. > :46:52.first time on radio in 1953. A decade later it was broadcast across

:46:53. > :46:55.the continent via Eurovision, so beginning its role as a vital part

:46:56. > :46:58.of many people's New Year celebrations. Two polkas next by

:46:59. > :47:02.Josef Strauss that have never before been performed at a New Year's Day

:47:03. > :47:04.Concert. In a moment, shenanigans, but first a polka mazurka with a bit

:47:05. > :52:19.of teasing going on. The Shenanigans Polka, and before it

:52:20. > :52:26.the Teasing Polka, both by Josef Strauss, both getting their New

:52:27. > :52:27.Year's Day premieres. Clemens Hellsberg, Vienna

:52:28. > :52:30.Philharmonic president, told me yesterday that even after 74

:52:31. > :52:34.concerts they have still performed less than 50% of the published music

:52:35. > :56:14.of the Strauss family. More ballet next, music from France.

:56:15. > :56:25.The pizzicato polka from Sylvia by Delibes with dancers from Vienna

:56:26. > :56:26.State Ballet in costumes designed by Vivienne Westwood, performing at the

:56:27. > :56:38.Liechenstein family palace. If you are listening on Radio 3 this

:56:39. > :56:41.morning and want to see the dancing and the palace, don't forget

:56:42. > :56:42.extended highlights, two hours' worth, from today's concert on BBC

:56:43. > :56:53.Four at 7:00pm, now available in HD. The Musikverein was inaugurated in

:56:54. > :56:57.1870, built on a piece of land given by Emperor Franz Josef I. It's one

:56:58. > :57:00.of the world's most important concert halls, yet when you sit in

:57:01. > :57:04.it, it feels very intimate, more like a salon than a great hall. The

:57:05. > :57:07.richness of its design almost overpowering, the golden caryatids

:57:08. > :57:10.that appear to support the balcony, the fine tapestries hanging in front

:57:11. > :57:14.of the boxes, the marbling and the brilliantly bright friezes. The

:57:15. > :57:17.seating looks a bit utility, because it is designed to be moved on the

:57:18. > :57:22.two occasions each year when this place becomes a ballroom. Another

:57:23. > :57:28.reference to the great opera composer Richard Strauss next, born

:57:29. > :57:30.150 years ago this year. Josef Strauss's Dynamiden Waltz, which

:57:31. > :07:36.Richard Strauss unmistakably echoed in his masterwork Der Rosenkavalier.

:07:37. > :07:41.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE The Dynamiden Waltz by Josef

:07:42. > :07:49.Strauss, with the alluring subtitle Secret Powers of Attraction. Music

:07:50. > :07:58.that was much to influence Richard Strauss when he came to write his

:07:59. > :08:04.opera Der Rosenkavalier. Josef Strauss died terribly young, just

:08:05. > :08:06.before his 43rd birthday. Just before he died, he wrote a sparkling

:08:07. > :09:53.polka called Without A Care. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:09:54. > :10:00.Daniel Barenboim shouting at the end of that polka by Josef Strauss,

:10:01. > :10:07.officially marking the end of the 20 14th the Vienna Philharmonic New

:10:08. > :10:13.Year's Day concert. Though, as regular fans will know, there are a

:10:14. > :10:18.few treats ahead of us yet. Presented by a member of the

:10:19. > :10:23.orchestra with that bouquet of flowers, contributed this year by

:10:24. > :10:27.the orchestra itself, grown by gardeners and nurserymen and women

:10:28. > :10:32.of Austria. Well put together by the look of it. As he struggles to pull

:10:33. > :10:43.one out! He has failed! This, Daniel Barenboim's second

:10:44. > :10:48.appearance at the New Year's Day concert. Significance to the fact

:10:49. > :10:52.that the orchestra asked to this great peacemaker and musical

:10:53. > :11:01.diplomat to return to conduct again. He is truly a citizen of the world.

:11:02. > :11:07.Born in Argentina. Travelling on Palestinian documents as well. It is

:11:08. > :11:11.a busy time of year for the players in the orchestra. I was talking to

:11:12. > :11:15.one of those on stage today and she told me she was playing on Christmas

:11:16. > :11:20.Day in the Nutcracker at the State Opera and then again in rehearsals

:11:21. > :11:24.for this concert on Saturday and Sunday with performances in the

:11:25. > :11:29.morning and evening. Easy times. She is making her first appearance this

:11:30. > :11:34.year. One of nine women on stage this year. It may be a small

:11:35. > :11:41.percentage but it is up on a year ago. Maybe we'll be in double

:11:42. > :11:44.figures by 2015. It often causes controversy. This is the first

:11:45. > :13:58.encore. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:13:59. > :14:06.The first encore by Josef Strauss. Him showing off his love of horse

:14:07. > :14:11.riding. The name of it is the fastest speed at which a horse can

:14:12. > :14:15.be written. It had an unfortunate start in its premiere as it was the

:14:16. > :14:20.day the Austrian army had been defeated in a key battle in the

:14:21. > :14:26.Austro Prussian War. Hence the work was rather overlooked. This concert

:14:27. > :14:31.is being shown on big screens in cafes and hotels across Biela this

:14:32. > :14:37.morning. I'll imagine the waiters are casting a final eye over the

:14:38. > :14:47.arrangements of cutlery and glasses before the onslaught of concertgoers

:14:48. > :14:52.and musicians. -- across Biela. Not far for Daniel Barenboim to go after

:14:53. > :14:55.the concert. Vienna Philharmonic conductors traditionally stay in the

:14:56. > :15:06.adjacent Imperial Hotel, which has a back door opposite the Musikverein's

:15:07. > :15:14.stage door. The carpet is bearable for the maestro to cross.

:15:15. > :25:55.By The Beautiful Blue Danube, the unofficial national anthem of Vienna

:25:56. > :26:05.and Austria, played by the Vienna Philharmonic this New Year's Day.

:26:06. > :26:22.The dancers are from the Vienna State Ballet. Do you use the hashtag

:26:23. > :26:29.#prosit2014, we can all be part of the celebration.

:26:30. > :26:36.We are nearly at the end of this year's festivities, the New Year's

:26:37. > :26:45.Day concert performance by the BNL Philharmonic supported by Rolex and

:26:46. > :26:53.conducted by Daniel Barenboim. -- Vienna. He is shaking hands with

:26:54. > :26:58.members of the orchestra. This is his second appearance conducting the

:26:59. > :27:01.New Year's Day concert, what charm and a spirit he has brought to

:27:02. > :27:07.proceedings, the lighting the audience, including his wife, his

:27:08. > :27:12.violinist son Michael, and I spotted Julie Andrews as well! She presents

:27:13. > :27:15.the American television coverage of this event, broadcast to 92

:27:16. > :27:22.countries around the world this year. If you fancy being in the

:27:23. > :27:30.audience next year, for real, tickets cost between 30 and 940

:27:31. > :30:47.euros. To get then you need to register...

:30:48. > :30:53.Daniel Barenboim shaking hands with BBN Philharmonic in the Radetzky

:30:54. > :30:58.March by Strauss Senior. If you want to be here next day, you have until

:30:59. > :31:05.January the 23rd to register your details at the website. That is it

:31:06. > :31:09.for this 2014 New Year's Day concert, what a great way to

:31:10. > :31:13.celebrate the New Year here at the Musikverein in Vienna with Daniel

:31:14. > :31:19.Barenboim on the rostrum after delightfully leading us through this

:31:20. > :31:23.programme of 21 musical treats from this city and further appeal. From

:31:24. > :31:27.me, Petroc Trelawny, and all of us here in Vienna, good afternoon to

:31:28. > :31:30.you and a very happy New Year.
