:36:57. > :37:01.The tradition began on New Year's Eve 1939,

:37:02. > :37:10.What is now an event of such a joy and celebration was an invention

:37:11. > :37:12.of the Nazi party, who saw the sweet waltzes of Strauss

:37:17. > :37:20.from the increasingly bleak state of the war.

:37:21. > :37:22.Right from the beginning, it was to reach a much wider

:37:26. > :37:29.with a live broadcast on radio frequencies across the Third Reich.

:37:30. > :37:32.That's a sober fact to remember in these days when this,

:38:21. > :38:23.Very much in the French style, Offenbach used to put can-cans

:38:24. > :38:28.in his operettas so perhaps Strauss thought he would match his

:38:29. > :40:50.the orchestra return to their seats. At The Double, by Johann Strauss.

:40:51. > :40:58.At The Double - fast polka by Johann Strauss from his operetta

:41:12. > :41:16.It's not billed in the official programme but I don't think anyone

:41:17. > :41:19.will be too surprised at what is to come.

:41:20. > :41:22.It was in 1873 that the relationship between the Vienna Philharmonic

:41:23. > :41:25.and the Strauss family began - when Strauss conducted his waltz

:41:26. > :41:28.Wiener Blut at that year's Vienna Opera Ball - held

:41:29. > :41:33.Later that year he conducted them in the Blue Danube Waltz.

:41:34. > :41:36.But there remained a certain sniffiness from the orchestra

:41:37. > :41:39.about Strauss' music - this was after all the ensemble

:41:40. > :42:10.It wasn't until Clemens Krauss began conducting an annual Strauss family

:42:11. > :53:13.The 72-year-old Latvian maestro, Mariss Jansons, conducting

:53:14. > :53:24.the Vienna Philharmonic in the Blue Danube Waltz.
