0:08:34 > 0:08:36CHEERING
0:08:40 > 0:08:44Mike Denver, ladies and gentlemen. Isn't he doing a great job?
0:08:44 > 0:08:47- HE SPEAKS IN IRISH - Fantastic.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03There's lots of bands around Portumna.
0:09:03 > 0:09:08As a child growing up, I would've seen the likes of The Conquerors were a great band around here.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10I would have seen them travelling off every afternoon
0:09:10 > 0:09:12when I'd be heading home from school.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Seeing my mam heading out every night,
0:09:19 > 0:09:21that was very normal for me growing up to see.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24That would have been something that I always wanted to be doing
0:09:24 > 0:09:27and something I always wanted to be, on the road.
0:09:31 > 0:09:35When Mike was about 15 or 16, I heard him sing.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38It was around the time Garth Brooks was coming to Ireland.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41And Mike was really into Garth Brooks at the time and I went in
0:09:41 > 0:09:45and I said, "Gosh, come out here, quick. You gotta hear Mike."
0:09:45 > 0:09:48I listened outside the door, I thought it was Garth Brooks singing.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51He was lucky he got good genes from the mother!
0:09:57 > 0:09:59It was a great learning experience.
0:09:59 > 0:10:04But I had a bit of the groundwork done as I say and a little bit of the apprenticeship served.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06Mike Denver!
0:10:16 > 0:10:20# Could've been the whiskey Might've been the gin... #
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Liz came along to a gig.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33She was bringing her mam along to a gig and, as I say,
0:10:33 > 0:10:34we haven't looked back.
0:10:34 > 0:10:3810, 11, 12 years later, still happy as ever.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48It's tough when you're leaving home early in the afternoon.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51You're not home till late the next morning,
0:10:51 > 0:10:53but that two hours on stage, it just makes up for it.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08When you hop out on that stage, nerves just disappear.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11You have them for that minute walking around before you hop out,
0:11:11 > 0:11:13but I think it's like most artists...
0:11:13 > 0:11:17You have a little flutter as I say before you go out.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20You're a little bit worried, but once you get on that stage, it all
0:11:20 > 0:11:23just disappears when you see people out there enjoying themselves.
0:11:23 > 0:11:25It brings the good out in you.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27Mike, you started out in your mother's band,
0:11:27 > 0:11:31but what was it like when you went on the road yourself?
0:11:31 > 0:11:34- Was it nerve-racking being on your own?- It was frightening.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37It's one of them memories that... always in the back of my mind,
0:11:37 > 0:11:40I can remember the days coming up to putting the band on the road,
0:11:40 > 0:11:43the few days rehearsing, and practising walking out on the stage and all these things.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46They're the little things that still stick in my mind.
0:11:46 > 0:11:47The very first song I sing,
0:11:47 > 0:11:51the night we launched the band was John Denver, Country Roads.
0:11:51 > 0:11:52That was the opening number.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55I think the next number was yours, a bit of Stand Beside Me.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57So there's a couple of numbers that stick in the mind
0:11:57 > 0:12:00from the very beginning. They were some of the songs.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04Now, you're one of the younger generation of singers,
0:12:04 > 0:12:06but singing the good old country songs.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08How do you choose the songs you sing?
0:12:08 > 0:12:12A lot of the songs are chosen from people sitting in audiences at gigs
0:12:12 > 0:12:15come up at the end of the night and would suggest different songs.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19I have a great team in the office. My manager, Willie, is a great influence.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21And my mam has always been a huge influence as well,
0:12:21 > 0:12:24picking songs over the years for me.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27Now, I suppose there are always highlights in any career,
0:12:27 > 0:12:30but I would hazard a guess by saying
0:12:30 > 0:12:33recording with George Jones must have been a highlight?
0:12:33 > 0:12:36It was, definitely. A lot of things stick out in my mind.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39Without a doubt, George Jones was definitely one of the big ones
0:12:39 > 0:12:41because I grew up listening to George Jones.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44I loved George Jones and Merle Haggard and all these guys.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46There's also other ones that... Meeting different people,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49getting to tour with the likes of Charlie Pride and one of
0:12:49 > 0:12:52the very first tours we done that I got to work with Crystal Gayle.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55That was huge thing at the time for us to meet people like that
0:12:55 > 0:12:58that I would have just grown up and seen them on the television.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02To meet people even like yourself at the time, it was a huge buzz
0:13:02 > 0:13:07and a huge highlight of my career, for someone that coming from a town in Portumna, small place,
0:13:07 > 0:13:10and meeting all these people that you grew up watching on
0:13:10 > 0:13:14television and seeing and hearing on the radio, it was a huge thing.
